Buccaneers | O.J. Howard practices    Fri Jul 30, 10:13 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles') practiced for the first time Friday, July 30, since tearing his Achilles' in October.

Footballguys view: Howard wasn't placed on the PUP to open camp, so this return was expected early in camp. He might not have as large a role as he had to open last season, when he was clearly ahead of Rob Gronkowski in the target pecking order, but Howard can still be relevant in fantasy leagues because of the low bar at tight end.

Buccaneers | Justin Watson to miss months    Sat Jul 24, 06:39 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Justin Watson (knee) recently underwent a procedure on his knee and is expected to be sidelined for around four months, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Watson hasn't been able to break into a quality Bucs depth chart at wide receiver. He will likely end up on the PUP list to start the season or injured reserve.

Buccaneers | Cameron Brate, Justin Watson on PUP list    Sat Jul 24, 04:05 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate (undisclosed) and WR Justin Watson (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 24.

Footballguys view: Brate should make the team as the third tight end after reworking his deal this offseason, but Watson is on the bubble after the team drafted Jaelon Darden in the fourth round, and after it was reported that he'll be out for four months following a knee procedure, it seems likely that he'll end up on the PUP list or injured reserve to open the season.

Buccaneers | Jordan Whitehead on COVID list    Fri Jul 23, 04:01 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers S Jordan Whitehead was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, July 23.

Footballguys view: Whitehead was already coming back from February labrum surgery, so it wasn't certain he would be ready for the open of camp. The league can't comment on whether Whitehead has covid or is just unvaccinated and was a close contact with a covid positive individual. He also missed the White House visit earlier this week.

Buccaneers | Robert Hainsey puts pen to paper    Wed Jul 21, 01:16 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers third-round pick OL Robert Hainsey (Notre Dame) signed his four-year rookie contract Wednesday, July 21. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hainsey is a proven starter at right tackle from a program that has created some good pros on the offensive line. His limitations could precipitate a move inside to guard and he also flashed at guard and center at the Senior Bowl. The Bucs can afford to be patient because they have one of the deepest rosters in the league.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady injury update    Thu Jul 15, 05:46 PM

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady (knee) played on a fully torn medial collateral ligament last season and had surgery on the knee during the offseason, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Brady showed incredible toughness to make it through the year with a banged up knee. The injury was more severe than he was letting on, but he got another ring and then had surgery to repair the damage. Now healthy, Brady should be ready to roll again in 2021.

Buccaneers | Chris Godwin unable to reach deal    Thu Jul 15, 04:55 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin did not reach a long-term contract extension with the Buccaneers before the July 15 deadline and will play on a one-year franchise tag tender.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers wanted to get something done, and keeping Godwin is still a priority. Godwin will play on the franchise tag this year and the team will work diligently to get him a long-term contract before he hits the open market in 2022. This is what happened with Shaq Barrett, who played on the franchise tag in 2020 before signing his long-term deal this year.

Buccaneers | Justin Watson's spot in jeopardy    Wed Jul 14, 11:48 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Justin Watson is 'squarely on the bubble' heading into training camp, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Watson was a fifth-round pick of the Buccaneers coming out of Pennsylvania in the 2018 NFL draft. He played mostly on special teams last year and has yet done little as a receiver. Watson has a nice size/speed combination but will need to perform well in training camp and the preseason to earn a spot in a deep receiving room behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Tyler Johnson and Scotty Miller.

Buccaneers | Jaelon Darden could earn small role    Wed Jul 14, 11:27 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jaelon Darden has 'shown enough playmaking ability' to serve as the fifth or sixth receiver in the offense, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Darden can make big plays happen regularly. He's a smaller prospect (175 pounds) but has quickness and foot speed to make defenders look silly before and after the catch. The fourth-round rookie out of North Texas has speed to destroy angles and has a proven nose for the end zone with a whopping 31 touchdowns over the last two seasons. It's wise for the Buccaneers to give him some plays here and there.

Buccaneers | Chris Godwin not close to extension    Fri Jul 9, 04:12 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin is not close to a long-term contract agreement with the Buccaneers at this point, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers were able to keep everyone from the Super Bowl team so they could make another run at a championship in 2021 but it did take some salary cap gymnastics to do that. The franchise tag was thought to be a placeholder for a new deal but nothing's yet comet to fruition. Deals get done at deadlines and with July 15 coming up we'll see if there's an 11th hour deal.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady off the mark?    Wed Jun 30, 04:33 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was credited with a bad throw on 20.6 percent of his pass attempts in 2020 - the sixth-highest rate for any quarterback with at least 125 pass attempts last season - per Pro Football Reference.

Footballguys view: Brady can be off the mark all the way to the Super Bowl again. He was playing in 2020 with a knee injury that was more severe than he was letting on. Now healthy, Brady is still capable of being a QB1 for Fantasy GMs. His current ADP is QB9 (7.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady: Still much to prove    Thu Jun 24, 12:50 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady still says he has ample motivation entering his 22nd NFL season. 'It's hard to walk away from something that you still feel like you can do and you want to do,' Brady said recently on The Late Late Show with James Corden. 'So it's not about proving it to others what you can do, it's more about proving it to yourself. And I still feel like even though I'll be 44 this year, I still have a chance to still prove it to myself that I can still do it at 44, because I really worked to a point where I can still do it at this age.'

Footballguys view: Tom Brady is like Michael Jordan - he can use anything to get motivated...fiercely motivated on the field. He's proven people wrong for years and will continue to do so.

Buccaneers | Limited role for Ke'Shawn Vaughn?    Wed Jun 23, 10:11 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ke'Shawn Vaughn could spend most of his time on special teams in 2021, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'Ke'Shawn's made a nice move, but he has to be a better special teams players right now because of what's in front of him,' Arians said.

Footballguys view: Vaughn is buried on the depth chart when it comes to the running back room. The Buccaneers still have Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones ahead of him on the depth chart. This offseason they added Gio Bernard who is ahead of Vaughn on the depth chart as well. Vaughn will work as a special teams player and has to patiently work for any larger role on offense.

Buccaneers | Antonio Brown's probation ends early    Tue Jun 22, 11:36 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown's probation was completed a year early Tuesday, June 22, and the case involving a battery charge has been finalized.

Footballguys view: Brown has been through a lot of legal issues over the last few years. He won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers last year and signed an incentive laden one-year deal to stay in Tampa earlier this year. Brown is a favorite of QB Tom Brady and works as the no.3 outlet receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. With tight end O.J. Howard back healthy, Brown's role (from a fantasy perspective) is more of a WR4/deep flex option on a weekly basis.

Buccaneers | Jaelon Darden missed some practice    Mon Jun 21, 06:25 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jaelon Darden (hamstring) missed a portion of minicamp because of a hamstring injury, according to ESPN.com's Jenna Laine.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Darden shined during his college career at North Texas. Darden has insane speed and quickness. He can get to top speed in a hurry and when you think he's running as fast as he can, Darden can hit a turbo button and go even faster. Hamstring injuries can be tricky for a guy like him. He's got plenty of time to rest before the start of training camp later this summer. The wide receiver room is packed in Tampa, but we love Darden's upside and are monitoring him in dynasty formats.

Buccaneers | Chris Godwin open to long-term deal    Fri Jun 11, 03:58 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin said he is open to signing a long-term extension with the Buccaneers but will allow his agent to handle negotiations.

Footballguys view: It was a no-brainer for the Buccaneers to place the franchise tag on Godwin earlier this offseason. They'll work diligently to get something done before the July 15th deadline to sign franchise-tagged players to long-term contracts.

Buccaneers | Curtis Riley has Achilles issue    Thu Jun 10, 09:32 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers S Curtis Riley (Achilles) suffered a 'slight Achilles tear' during practice Wednesday, June 9, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Footballguys view: Riley is a journeyman who was on the roster fringe at best, so this doesn't affect the Bucs defensive outlook.

Buccaneers | Antonio Brown closer to return    Wed Jun 9, 11:27 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown (knee) is about two weeks away from returning to practice, the team announced Tuesday, June 8.

Footballguys view: That means Brown should miss mandatory minicamp, but he'll be ready for the start of training camp. With the Bucs keeping the band together, it's easy to project Brown's stats for 2021 based on him being the no.3 receiving option behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Buccaneers | Kyle Trask inks rookie deal    Tue Jun 8, 01:43 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-round pick QB Kyle Trask (Florida) signed a four-year contract Tuesday, June 8. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed, but he reportedly received a signing bonus of $1.385 million.

Footballguys view: Trask could be the quarterback of the future for the Buccaneers. He's a big bodied passer with the ability to attack a defense down the field. His mechanics and decision making skill need to be cleaned up, and learning from Tom Brady could go a long way in doing that. Trask is a player we'll monitor closely in dynasty formats.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady expected on sidelines at minicamp    Tue Jun 1, 07:44 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady (knee) isn't expected to do much throwing at mandatory minicamp while recovering from offseason knee surgery, according to head coach Bruce Arians Tuesday, June 1. 'I don't know how much I'll let him do ... with guys chasing him around,' Arians said. 'We'll see. We'll see what the doctors say. He may be doing a lot of coaching.'

Footballguys view: Brady doesn't need to do anything during OTAs and minicamp. He played through a knee injury last year that was more severe than he was letting on. The Buccaneers will be wise to ease him into action when training camp hits.

Buccaneers | Antonio Brown terms    Wed May 26, 11:21 AM

Updating previous reports, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown received a $1.1 million base salary with a $2 million signing bonus. He can earn $900,000 in per-game roster bonuses with player and team improvement attached in some stats. He'll earn $333,333 for 50 receptions, $333,334 for 70 receptions, $333,333 for 600 yards, $333,334 for 800 yards, $333,333 for five touchdowns, $333,333 for seven touchdowns and $250,000 for a Super Bowl win while active and 45 percent playing time.

Footballguys view: Brown is back with the Buccaneers as expected. It's rinse-repeat when it comes to projecting what Brown can be in Tampa's offense. He's going to work as the no.3 receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin once again this season. From a fantasy perspective, that role makes Brown more of a flex consideration on a weekly basis.

Buccaneers | Antonio Brown passes physical    Tue May 25, 10:16 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown (knee) passed his physical Tuesday, May 25, and officially signed his one-year deal.

Buccaneers | RBs expected to share load again in 2021    Sun May 23, 10:14 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette will likely split time again in 2021, according to recent comments made by head coach Bruce Arians.'They're both (going to) play. They're so talented and they both bring so much to the table. Hopefully, if they're both healthy, they are splitting time. I know fantasy doesn't like that, but those two guys ... I mean, RoJo is one of the best runners I've been around. Lenny had that great run in the playoffs. He showed what they drafted him for in the top five,' Arians said.

Footballguys view: That's the plan that worked last year and the Buccaneers kept the band together so they could do it again in 2021. From a fantasy perspective, Jones was the guy for the team during the regular season but Fournette was a "closer" when the team went on their Super Bowl run. Jones is a RB2 option and Fournette is more of a RB3/deep flex play if the regular season splits match last year.

Buccaneers | Team Excited About Trask's Potential    Sun May 23, 03:49 PM

Bucs QB Kyle Trask "impressed the coaching staff" with his knowledge of the playbook. "He was throwing to the right guy. There were some disguised coverages he saw the first day, so I was really impressed with how he processes, and he was very accurate," coach Bruce Arians said after rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Trask could be the quarterback of the future for the Buccaneers. Tom Brady is their starter for another year or two, but Trask will get a chance to learn from one of the best as a backup. Trask has no problem attacking a defense downfield. He can move around a bit, but he's at his best when he can stand in the pocket and challenge one-on-one matchups on the outside deep. His processor can be a little slow at times and he needs to clean up his footwork but Trask is a player we'll be monitoring in dynasty formats.

Buccaneers | Bruce Arians has no retirement plans    Thu May 20, 01:43 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said on the Pewter Report podcast Tuesday, May 18, that he plans to honor his current five-year contract, which runs through the 2023 season, and perhaps coach even longer. He also said his plans don't hinge on how much longer QB Tom Brady plays. 'I don't have any plans on retiring,' Arians said. 'It's just, when do I not want to go back to work? When I'm not excited about going back to work then I'm cheating somebody. I'm cheating the Glazer family, I'm cheating my players. Right now I can't wait to get back to work. I don't know when that's going to happen, but no, I'm not tied to any players.'

Footballguys view: Arians is a straight shooter, so we believe him. Byron Leftwich could get consideration for a head coaching gig next year, so that could perhaps change the calculus here if Arians stepping down would be the only way to keep Leftwich.

Buccaneers | Jaelon Darden agrees to rookie pact    Wed May 19, 01:05 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fourth-round draft pick WR Jaelon Darden (North Texas) signed a four-year contract Wednesday, May 19. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Darden is one of the most explosive receivers in this draft class and he's got a tremendous nose for the end zone. He finished third in the FBS in receiving yards (1,190) in 2020 and second in receiving touchdowns (19) only behind DeVonta Smith. He's an undersized wide receiver which leads to durability concerns, but Darden is driven and focused to make an impact. We'll be watching him in dynasty formats.

Updating an earlier report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown (knee) had successful cleanup surgery Tuesday, May 18, and he'll be ready after a few weeks of rehab.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard almost all the way back    Sat May 15, 11:47 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles) is expected to attend mandatory minicamp in early June, according to comments from head coach Bruce Arians.'Yeah, he's really close now. He looks fantastic working out every day,' Arians said.

Footballguys view: Howard gives the Buccaneers yet another weapon in the passing game. In 2020, Howard was on a career best pace over the first four games of the year. He's been on the road to recovery since last fall, and it sounds like he's progressing well. Expect the team to ease him back into action. If he gets back to where he was physically, the role is there for him to post near TE1 numbers in this offense.
