Patriots | PUP list for Stephon Gilmore    Thu Jul 22, 05:03 PM

New England Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore (quadriceps) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 22.

Footballguys view: Gilmore did report to camp, so there isn't a contract drama brewing here even though things aren't exactly peachy between him and the team. We'll be watching closely to see if he is ready to face the Dolphins Week 1.

Patriots | New England places three on NFI list    Wed Jul 21, 06:25 PM

New England Patriots S Joshuah Bledsoe (undisclosed), LB Cameron McGrone (undisclosed) and RB Rhamondre Stevenson (undisclosed) were placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 21.

Footballguys view: All three are draft picks. Stevenson's ailment is unknown, but if he's healthy in time for the preseason, he should be heavily used in exhibition games as the Patriots will want to keep Sony Michel and Damien Harris in bubble wrap until the regular season.

Patriots | Christian Barmore inks rookie pact    Wed Jul 21, 01:11 PM

New England Patriots second-round pick DT Christian Barmore (Alabama) signed his four-year rookie contract Wednesday, July 21. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Barmore could be an instant hit in defensive tackle required IDP leagues. He has a chance to play end on early downs and shift inside at times on passing downs. Bill Belichick gave up two four round picks to move up eight slots so he could take the first defensive tackle off of the board in this draft.

Patriots | Ronnie Perkins inks rookie contract    Tue Jul 20, 03:58 PM

New England Patriots third-round pick DE/LB Ronnie Perkins (Oklahoma) signed a four-year contract Tuesday, July 20. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Perkins could be an instant impact player as a situational pass rusher. He and the Patriots will open the season at home against the Dolphins.

Patriots | Chase Winovich will be ready for camp    Tue Jul 20, 11:43 AM

New England Patriots LB Chase Winovich (undisclosed) will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Winovich is an energetic edge rusher who should help in a rotation that will now feature Matt Judon.

Patriots | Jonnu Smith will be ready    Tue Jul 20, 11:41 AM

New England Patriots TE Jonnu Smith (hamstring) will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: This is good news, but it reminds us to monitor Smith's health throughout camp. There's a path for Hunter Henry to greatly exceed ADP if Smith's injury issues surface during the season. The Patriots have a plan for Smith in the passing game, but he has to stay healthy in camp for them to install it.

Patriots | Rhamondre Stevenson must prove himself    Sun Jul 18, 07:34 PM

New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson is going to have to have to earn his playing time as a rookie, according to assistant coach Ivan Fears. 'We're not just going to give him a free ride,' Fears said. 'If he doesn't earn it, he gets to watch.'

Footballguys view: Stevenson is a downhill banger in the mold of LeGarrette Blount, but the team won't need him if they keep Sony Michel to back up Damien Harris. The team also often sits their rookie backs (including Harris), so what Fears says is likely true. Don't expect Stevenson to have value in redraft leagues this year.

Patriots | Brandon Bolden in a good spot    Sun Jul 18, 07:29 PM

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden 'seems like a strong bet' to make the roster in 2021 because of his contributions on special teams, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Bolden is back after opting out, and his presence could cost one of J.J. Taylor or Sony Michel a roster spot unless the team wants to keep six running backs.

Patriots | J.J. Taylor drawing praise    Sun Jul 18, 07:22 PM

New England Patriots RB J.J. Taylor has shown himself to be an 'excellent make-you-miss type of back,' according to assistant coach Ivan Fears.

Footballguys view: Taylor will need to have a good camp to make the team. He could make it over Sony Michel if they expect fourth-round Rhamondre Stevenson to be a more effective runner than Michel, which would give the team more diversity in skillsets. Taylor could contribute in the passing game, but won't have fantasy value without multiple injuries ahead of him in the backfield. He could get snapped up and have a larger role elsewhere if the Patriots don't keep on him on their final 53.

Patriots | Jonnu Smith can do it all    Sun Jul 18, 12:09 AM

New England Patriots TE Jonnu Smith can be used in 'a gazillion different ways,' according to an NFL offensive coordinator. 'Blocking at all levels, jet sweeps, motion, and he's improved as a receiver,' the coordinator said.

Footballguys view: Smith was the first priority for Bill Belichick in free agency, so it makes sense that he'll be featured in the passing game ahead of fellow free agent pickups Hunter Henry and Nelson Agholor. He's a fine later pick in a tight end by committee approach with hope that one pick will emerge to be your clear #1.

Patriots | Hunter Henry among most reliable    Sat Jul 17, 10:39 PM

New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry had one drop on 93 targets last season.

Footballguys view: Henry will be part of a crowded pass offense in New England that should also be among the league's lowest in pass volume. He could lead the team in receiving touchdowns but still not be a consistent fantasy option. He's only worth consideration in best ball unless Jonnu Smith can't stay healthy.

Patriots | Cam Newton: Time to put up    Thu Jul 15, 02:52 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton said Thursday, July 15, that the 2021 season is 'put up or shut up' time. 'For me, the Patriots' organization has been impeccable ... my time there has been everything I could have asked for, Newton said during a radio interview. 'I guess it's now time for me to uphold my end of the bargain, through and through.'

Footballguys view: Newton is correct, this is a make-or-break season for him. The Patriots selected Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft to be their quarterback of the future. Newton and Jones will compete for the starting job in camp, and Newton's experience should help him secure that spot. However, if Newton struggles like he did last season then the Patriots will turn things over to the rookie.

Patriots | WR Harry Plans to Show Up to Camp    Wed Jul 14, 04:32 PM

Josina Anderson, from Undefined With Josina Anderson, reports the current plan is for New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry to attend training camp.

Footballguys view: Previous reports have stated that Harry has asked for a trade. The former first-round pick has been a bust for the Patriots so far in his career, mainly due to injuries and inconsistencies. A fresh start would be best for both sides, but we can't imagine any team out there willing to give up much for Harry. We'll see if he gets dealt before the start of camp or if he makes the awkward move to show up to Patriots camp.

Patriots | Damien Harris in catbird seat    Tue Jul 13, 02:14 PM

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris is 'off to a really good start in preparation for the season,' according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: There is no doubt that Harris is the lead back for the Patriots. Sure, Sony Michel can get some time here and there but Harris is the main man. Yes, James White will still get on the field as a receiving back so Harris won't get the workload that others in the league will. However, Harris has enough talent and enough of a role to at least be a flex play with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2021. His current ADP is RB31 (6.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Nelson Agholor lived off the deep ball in 2020    Mon Jul 12, 10:07 PM

New England Patriots WR Nelson Agholor's average depth of target was 15.5 yards as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 - the deepest average for any player with at least 70 targets last season.

Footballguys view: Agholor made plays last year for the Raiders and that's why the Patriots scooped him up this offseason. His eight touchdown grabs from last year will be difficult to duplicate, and consistency has never been a hallmark of his game. We see Agholor, in a run-heavy Patriots offense with Cam Newton hoping to bounce back as more of a depth receiver for your fantasy team. He's currently going off the board at WR64 (14.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | WR Meyers Most Reliable and Productive in 2021?    Fri Jul 9, 02:33 PM

Tom Curran, from NBC Sports Boston, would "put (his) cash" on Jakobi Meyers being "the most reliable and productive Patriots wideout in 2021."

Footballguys view: Meyers is what Fantasy GMs call a perfect late-round (final round?) flier. The opportunity could be there for Meyers, not only because of his natural talent but also because of the lack of talent with the other wide receivers on the depth chart. The ever inconsistent Nelson Agholor is the other starting receiver on the outside for the Patriots. They also have TEs Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry to get targets when they go through the air. Meyers could be a nice 'what the heck' flex to mix in for your fantasy team.

Patriots | Stephon Gilmore seeks top-5 pay    Fri Jul 9, 01:46 PM

New England Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore is seeking a pay increase commensurate with the top five highest-paid cornerbacks in the game.   Patriots | Shoulder injury hampered Cam Newton    Fri Jul 9, 12:23 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton said Friday, July 9, in a video posted on YouTube that his shoulder injury suffered in December 2016 affected him and his style of play for the ensuing three-plus years. He added that he began to feel fully recovered only last season.

Footballguys view: Newton had a bad 2020 season but the Patriots brought him back for another run. He's going to compete with rookie first-round pick Mac Jones for the starting job in training camp. Newton could win the job with his experience and improved play, but if he falters then the team might want to just see what they have with Jones in the lineup.

Patriots | Mac Jones gets rookie deal finalized    Tue Jul 6, 04:21 PM

New England Patriots first-round pick QB Mac Jones (Alabama) signed a four-year contract worth $15.6 million Tuesday, July 6. The deal includes a fifth-year team option.

Footballguys view: The Patriots were happy to add Jones as a potential franchise quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. He's smart, accurate and known as a great leader. Jones is not overly athletic and does not have a rocket arm, but he's a perfect fit for the Josh McDaniels system. Jones has uncanny accuracy on short-to-intermediate routes and can lead his receivers properly to maximize yards after the catch. He'll compete with Cam Newton for the starting job in training camp. If (when?) Newton struggles (if the veteran wins the job) the team should not hesitate to go to Jones.

Patriots | N'Keal Harry ready to move on    Tue Jul 6, 02:13 PM

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry and his agent formally requested a trade Tuesday, July 6.

Footballguys view: Harry was a first-round pick who just didn't work out with the Patriots. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his game, and he's not been a great fit for the scheme. We can't see the Patriots getting much in return for Harry. Perhaps some team is willing to part ways with a late-round pick to give Harry a second chance.

Patriots | Cam Newton working out with teammates    Thu Jul 1, 04:46 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton is working out with WR Jakobi Meyers and TE Jonnu Smith during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Meyers didn't get going until around Week 7 last year but once he did he was getting around seven targets per game. If Newton improves and the passing game performs better this year, Meyers would have more deep flex appeal for Fantasy GMs. Smith is going to compete with Hunter Henry for the starting tight end job with the Patriots in 2021, but expect plenty of two-TE sets.

Patriots | Damien Harris the Decisive RB1?    Wed Jun 30, 01:11 PM

In a recent interview on Sirius XM, Mike Reiss from ESPN stated that Patriots RB Damien Harris is their RB1 "and it's pretty decisive."

Footballguys view: Will we get more clarity in the Patriots backfield this year? That's the question that Fantasy GMs are pondering right with training camp about a month away. Harris should be the lead back in a RBBC for the Patriots as they'll mix in other guys like Sony Michel and James White. He does have enough fantasy value to be considered as a flex play on a weekly basis.

Patriots | Jones vs Newton a True QB Competition    Mon Jun 28, 04:01 PM

Mike Giardi, from NFL Network, reports the training camp battle between QB Cam Newton and rookie first-round pick Mac Jones will be a "true quarterback competition."

Footballguys view: We'll see how this competition shakes out in training camp. So many factors were against Newton last year (teammates opting out, COVID) and there are some who think he's in for a bounce-back season. Newton had better be on his game or the Patriots can turn to Jones who they see as a potential quarterback of the future. Jones has a much different game from Newton, so expect the offense to be tweaked depending on which quarterback is under center.

Patriots | Cam Newton most improved?    Sat Jun 26, 12:58 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton tops NFL analyst Gil Brandt's recently released list of nine players who he believes are 'guaranteed to play better' in 2021. Brandt cites Newton's full 2021 offseason with the team, his 2020 bout with COVID-19 and the Patriots' skill-position upgrades as reasons he's expecting a much better season out of Newton.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Newton plays better in the preseason and how much rookie first-round pick Mac Jones is going to push him for the starting job. Newton should be the starter for the Patriots so long as the team is in contention. Keep that in mind if selecting the veteran passer in your fantasy drafts. If things fall apart for New England, they will want to take a look at Jones as their starter. If they're pushing for the postseason then Newton is likely the guy.

Patriots | Devin Ross officially signed    Mon Jun 21, 05:58 PM

Free-agent WR Devin Ross (Patriots) signed with the New England Patriots Monday, June 21. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ross, who has been with the Patriots before, had a minicamp tryout and the team like what they saw. Undrafted out of the University of Colorado in 2018, Ross has bounced around to a few teams and spent some time on the Patriots practice squad last year. He's yet to play a regular season game and is a long shot for the 53-man roster in New England.

Patriots | Rookie QB Mac Jones to push Cam Newton?    Mon Jun 21, 03:45 PM

Albert Breer, from SI.com, reports Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones has done enough in spring practices to push Cam Newton for the starting job in training camp.

Footballguys view: Jones, a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, is smart and accurate as a passer although he is limited physically. Newton struggled last year with the Patriots and is looking for a bounce-back season in 2021. We'll see this battle shake out in camp, and we think Newton wins the job. However, if/when he struggles then the team could turn to Jones who they hope can be a franchise quarterback. This will be a situation to monitor in August.

Patriots | Coach happy with Damien Harris     Sun Jun 20, 12:24 PM

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris performed very well during offseason workouts despite being pushed hard by the coaches, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: Harris's upside will be capped if Cam Newton is the starting quarterback for most of the season because Newton will be the first option at the goal line, but if Mac Jones can overtake Newton sooner than later, Harris will have added value. Sony Michel and James White are still around make this a classic Belichick backfield, but Harris is cheap enough that he can be a good pick for teams that don't invest in running back early and do alike.

Patriots | Hunter Henry shines in minicamp    Fri Jun 18, 11:55 PM

New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry has been 'catching everything thrown his way' during minicamp, according to Mike Dussault of Patriots.com.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Henry has been a little bit banged up during the offseason but if healthy he can produce. He's always had talent and that's why the Patriots nabbed him in free agency. They also grabbed Jonnu Smith in free agency this year, so we'll have to see how the pecking order between the two is established in training camp.

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry (calf) returned to practice Wednesday, June 16, after leaving early Tuesday, June 15, because of an apparent calf injury.

Footballguys view: Harry is on the hot seat this year. The former first-round pick is no lock for the final roster and is competing for a spot on the depth chart at the end of the bench. He needs to stay healthy and impress in order to make the team.

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry (calf) suffered a calf injury during practice Tuesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: Harry, a former first-round pick, is on the roster bubble and this injury isn't going to help his chances. No word on the severity of the injury, and it's the Patriots so we probably won't know a bunch about that, but Harry needs to get healthy, stay healthy and show off in practice if he wants to make the team.

Patriots | Rhamondre Stevenson showing off hands early    Mon Jun 14, 07:25 PM

New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson has flashed more pass-catching ability than expected during the early days of the offseason, according to MassLive.com's Chris Mason.

Footballguys view: Stevenson is your classic banger as a runner. He's big, powerful and has intent with the ball between the tackles. He caught 28 passes over the last two years at Oklahoma and showed soft hands in college with the ability to adjust to passes. We'll see how the rookie works his way into the mix behind guys like Damien Harris and James White in training camp.

Patriots | Jonnu Smith leaves early    Mon Jun 14, 02:26 PM

New England Patriots TE Jonnu Smith (hamstring) left practice early Monday, June 14, after suffering an apparent hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: The Patriots added both Smith and Hunter Henry in free agency this offseason - and both players have been banged up this offseason. Henry had a leg injury and had to leave practice last week, but the injury is not considered serious. Now, Smith leaves practice with a hamstring ailment. No word on the severity yet. New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) will be a full participant at the mandatory minicamp this week despite his hand injury.

Footballguys view: Good news for Newton and the Patriots here. Newton has the most experience as a starter on the roster but the team selected Mac Jones in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft to be their quarterback of the future. He'll have to hold off Jones in training camp to secure the starting job. Newton should do that, but if he falters again this year the team could turn to Jones sometime during the regular season.

Patriots | Jakobi Meyers had strong spring    Mon Jun 14, 11:33 AM

New England Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers had a strong spring, in the opinion of beat writer Andrew Callahan.

Footballguys view: The Patriots no.1 receiver in 2020, Meyers is putting in some good work during the offseason. The Patriots have a run-heavy offense with QB Cam Newton under center, and that limits the fantasy potential of Meyers. If/when rookie QB Mac Jones takes over as the starter, then perhaps the Patriots will bring more balance to the offense. Fantasy GMs in deeper leagues can take Meyers off the board as a late-round flier.

  Patriots | N'Keal Harry not a lock    Mon Jun 14, 10:27 AM

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry could be fighting for a roster spot, in the opinion of beat writer Andrew Callahan.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The former first-round pick has not lived up to his draft status either due to poor performance or injury. Selected over A.J. Brown and Deebo Samuel in the 2019 NFL draft, Harry has played in just 20 games over two seasons hauling in 45 catches for 414 yards and four touchdowns during that time. A change of scenery might be best for him, but the trade rumors about Harry never came to fruition - likely because other teams weren't willing to give up much for him.
