Saints | Kicking battle continuing in New Orleans Wed Aug 26, 09:53 PM
New Orleans Saints PK Charlie Smyth, PK Tanner Brown and PK Daniel Carlson will all remain in a kicking competition heading into the final week of the preseason, according to head coach Kellen Moore.

New York Giants PK Dominic Zvada outkicked PK Ben Sauls during practice Wednesday, Aug. 26, and it 'would be surprising' if Zvada didn't win the starting kicking job, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com.
Link to storyNew York Jets K Jason Sanders has been named the team's kicker for Week 1, according to special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. In a corresponding move, the team waived K Cade York.
Footballguys view: According to ProFootballTalk.com, that doesn't necessarily mean Sanders will be their kicker in Week 1 -- it's possible that the Jets could acquire another kicker before the start of the regular season -- but it at least leaves Sanders as the last kicker standing for now. Reporters at Jets practice have said that both York and Sanders have been struggling, but Sanders apparently has been better. The 30-year-old Sanders, who missed all of last season with a hip injury, had played his entire career with the Dolphins until they released him in March.

Free-agent PK Daniel Carlson (Raiders) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Monday, Aug. 24.
Footballguys view: Tanner Brown and Charlie Smyth have been vying for the kicker spot in New Orleans. Brown missed a field goal in Saturday's shutout loss to the Rams, and Smyth missed one in the preseason opener. Brown was 2-of-2 on field goals in that game while Smyth made both extra points he attempted. Carlson spent the last eight seasons with the Raiders. He was 224-of-255 on field goals and 238-of-249 on extra points for the AFC West club.

Pittsburgh Steelers PK Laith Marjan was waived Sunday, Aug. 23.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts PK Spencer Shrader and PK Blake Grupe will continue their kicking competition, head coach Shane Steichen said Saturday, Aug. 22. 'I think that's ongoing, but both those guys are starting kickers in this league,' Steichen said. 'So it's going to be a big decision for us.'
Link to storyGreen Bay Packers PK Trey Smack made all four of his field goal attempts during the preseason game against the Denver Broncos Friday, Aug. 21, connecting on two from 50-plus yards, and Smack has made all seven of his field goal attempts during the preseason.

Washington Commanders PK Jake Moody was released by Commanders, according to a source on Monday, Aug. 17. PK Drew Stevens has won the kicking job for the Commanders.
Footballguys view: Moody had struggled with his consistency in training camp and booted a 29-yard attempt off the right upright that fell over the crossbar in Friday's 20-7 preseason win over Miami. Meanwhile, rookie Drew Stevens has been more consistent. Three of his five misses in training camp occurred in one day, and he made a 41-yarder down the middle vs. the Dolphins. Stevens was considered to have the stronger leg. He made eight of 13 field goal attempts from beyond 50 yards in his last two seasons at Iowa. Now he's set to open the season with sole possession of the job.

Miami Dolphins PK Zane Gonzalez (undisclosed) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Aug. 10.
Footballguys view: Gonzalez has been competing with Riley Patterson, who was excellent for the Dolphins last year, making 93% of his field goals - a franchise record. As Footballguy Sigmund Bloom noted this week, Gonzalez has been the more accurate kicker to date in camp, but there's no reason to believe the Dolphins won't be comfortable rolling with Patterson again this fall. Gonzales, meanwhile, will miss the entire season unless the Dolphins release him.

Baltimore Ravens PK Tyler Loop made all eight of his field goal attempts during practice Sunday, Aug. 9, including three kicks from 50-plus yards.
Footballguys view: As Footballguy Sigmund Bloom noted, Loop had a great rookie year after the team drafted him in the sixth round to replace longtime kicker Justin Tucker, but he missed a kick to win the AFC North and send the team to the playoffs against the Steelers. So there was some question about how he would respond in 2026. So far, so good. There are no signs that Loop's confidence has been permanently shaken.

Indianapolis Colts PK Blake Grupe has made 27 of his 30 field-goal attempts during training camp so far, while PK Spencer Shrader has misfired on 10 of his 30 tries. The two are battling in training camp and the preseason for the starting placekicker job.

Baltimore Ravens PK Tyler Loop connected on all seven of his field goal attempts during practice Thursday, Aug. 6, including kicks from 53 yards and 61 yards.
Footballguys view: Loop had a very successful rookie year after the Ravens took him in the sixth round to replace Justin Tucker, but his maiden voyage ended with a miss on an attempt that would have given the team the AFC North title and sent them to the playoffs. Instead, the rival Steelers advanced. It doesn't appear that he has any confidence issues in his second training camp after Loop made a kick at the end of a recent open practice to avert the disaster of the team having to do 50 pushups after practice. Earlier in the offseason, he also made a kick to get the team out of their last round of meetings following the end of mandatory minicamp.

Link to storyBaltimore Ravens PK Tyler Loop could still face competition for the starting kicker job, according to head coach Jesse Minter. 'He'll continue to work over the summer,' Minter said. 'He'll continue to work in training camp. But we play in September, so I think that gives us a lot of time to be able to answer questions as they may come up.'
Footballguys view: Loop's missed 44-yard kick cost Baltimore the AFC North title in a 26-24 loss at Pittsburgh. The Ravens were eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 2021, and John Harbaugh was fired as head coach after 18 seasons with the team. Loop's ability to bounce back -- and the Ravens' faith in him to do so -- is among the biggest storylines surrounding the team. This spring, Loop has been the only kicker on the Ravens' roster. We'll see if it stays that way when camp opens.

Baltimore Ravens PK Tyler Loop struggled down the stretch in 2025, but the team and new head coach Jesse Minter aren't dwelling on the past. He noted the team intentionally creates pressure situations during practice to test the kicker. 'We want to create opportunities for him to have these moments in front of people, in front of the team,' Minter said.

Free-agent PK Jason Sanders (Giants) agreed to terms with the New York Jets Wednesday, June 3, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team is also releasing PK Younghoe Koo.
Footballguys view: The Giants released Sanders, a former All-Pro, to clear a roster spot for Juju Smith-Schuster earlier this week. Sanders, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, was by far the most experienced kicker under contract with the Giants. The 30-year-old Sanders has made 84.6% of his NFL field goal attempts. That includes 90.2% in the 2024 season, when he was 12-for-14 from 50-plus yards.

Miami Dolphins PKs Zane Gonzalez and Riley Patterson are vying for the starting placekicker job.
Footballguys view: Patterson hit 93.1 percent (27-of-29) of his field-goal attempts, a new single-season franchise record. He was re-signed to the NFL minimum, and the team brought in the journeyman Gonzalez to compete. It's a battle we'll monitor through training camp.

Footballguys view: As previously reported here, the annual average of Boswell's new deal -- $6.22 million -- ranks fourth among league kickers. Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys, who signed a four-year, $28 million deal last month, has the highest annual average. Boswell ranks fifth in NFL history in field goal accuracy at 87.7 percent. He is the only kicker with more than 10 career playoff attempts to convert every one, going 19 for 19. Boswell's Footballguys projection -- PK11 -- puts him in the starting tier.
