San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones was 7-for-12 for 121 yards, three touchdowns and no INTs with a 132.3 passer rating on third down in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: To be fair, Jones was effective throughout. In particular, his ability to play the roll-out game fits well in Shanahan's system. Jones targeted the intermediate level of the field (10-19 air yards) on 35.9 percent of his attempts, his highest rate in a game since 2021. He completed 9 of 14 attempts when targeting the intermediate area for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Sunday marked only the second time in Jones' career he's thrown for 250-plus yards and three TDs (once in 2023). It wasn't all perfect, but Jones gives the 49ers a viable option when Brock Purdy can't go. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Kendrick Bourne had three receptions (on three targets) for 32 yards in a Week 2 win over the New Orleans Saints.

San Francisco 49ers RB Brian Robinson Jr. carried the ball six times for 20 yards versus the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. Robinson also had one catch for minus-one yard.
Link to storyThe 49ers still consider Brock Purdy week to week and do not yet know his status for the Week 3 game against the Cardinals. "I think there's a chance, but we've got to see how the toe goes," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's 26-21 win over the Saints, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. "It's very up to debate, so we're just taking it a day at a time."
Footballguys view: Purdy injured his left shoulder and a toe in the season opener against the Seahawks. It is the toe that kept him out against the Saints, with Mac Jones getting the start Sunday. A report indicated Purdy would miss 2-5 weeks, but the 49ers insist they haven't set a definitive timeline for his return. Jones went 26-of-39 for 279 yards and three touchdowns in Purdy's stead. We'll be following up on Purdy through the week. |
San Francisco 49ers TE Jake Tonges caught four of his five targets for 31 yards in a 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner recorded a team-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops, and added a pass defensed and a forced fumble in a 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones completed 26 of his 39 passes for 279 yards and tied a career high with three touchdown passes. He also lost a fumble.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com noted, Jones missed his first four passes, but the fifth-year pro settled in, hitting eight straight at one point and effectively running the offense. Jones put balls on the money, including hitting Jauan Jennings in stride for a 42-yard touchdown. Despite having Christian McCaffrey at full speed, the Niners called 39 passes for Jones. Sunday marked only the second time in the QB's career he's thrown for 250-plus yards and three TDs (once in 2023). While Brock Purdy isn't ruled out for Week 3, Jones showed he can keep the offense afloat as long as needed. |

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers OG Ben Bartch (ankle) will not return to the Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints due to an ankle injury he suffered in the first half.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk (concussion) suffered a concussion in the first half of the Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints, and did not return.
Footballguys view: Juszczyk added to the team's injury issues. George Kittle (hamstring) landed on injured reserve earlier this week, while Brock Purdy (toe, left shoulder) was ruled out Friday. LT Trent Williams (knee) and WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) started against the Saints despite questionable designations. With Juszczyk out, the Niners leaned on TEs Jake Tonges, Luke Farrell, and Brayden Willis to help fill the void. HC Kyle Shanahan said last week that tight end and fullback have become essentially interchangeable in his offense. We'll see if Juszczyk can return to reclaim that role against the Cardinals in Week 3. |

San Francisco 49ers OG Ben Bartch (ankle) suffered an apparent ankle injury in the first quarter of the Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he limped off to the blue medical tent. OG Connor Colby entered at left guard. Bartch is questionable to return.
Link to storyThe San Francisco 49ers have declared OT Austen Pleasants, OG Drew Moss, DT Jordan Jefferson, QB Brock Purdy, RB Jordan James, WR Jordan Watkins and LB Nick Martin inactive for Week 2.

The San Francisco 49ers are not optimistic that QB Brock Purdy (toe) will be able to return to action for Week 3's game versus the Arizona Cardinals, although it hasn't been ruled out, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers OT Trent Williams (knee) will test his knee during pregame warmups prior to Week 2's contest against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Sept. 14, to see if he can play. He had been listed as questionable on the injury report after participating in just one of the team's three practice sessions during the week on a limited basis. If Williams is unable to suit up, OT Spencer Burford would start at left tackle instead.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey had his 31st career games with 50-plus yards rushing and 50-plus yards receiving in Week 1, and only Marshall Faulk has more such games in NFL history.

San Francisco 49ers practice squad QB Adrian Martinez and TE Brayden Willis were elevated to the active roster Saturday, Sept. 13, and will be available for Week 2.

49ers OT Trent Williams (knee) and WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) returned to a limited practice on Friday and were both listed as questionable for Sunday's game at New Orleans.
Footballguys view: Williams is a grizzled vet who plays through most injuries. Expect him to go against a middling Saints defensive line. Jennings was seen dunking a ball over the goal post and appeared to be ready to play, although the 49ers signed Kendrick Bourne this week, so he should have a role. Jennings wasn't having a big impact on the game last week before his injury, so it's not clear that he's a good play this week even if he is active and starting. George Kittle being out could help concentrate targets on the wide receivers and Christian McCaffrey, although backup quarterback Mac Jones will start, which could lower the ceiling for the whole offense. |
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 12, and has been ruled out for Week 2. WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) and OT Trent Williams (knee) were limited during practice and are listed as questionable. OG Ben Bartch (elbow, knee), DE Nick Bosa (non-injury), LB Luke Gifford (knee), RB Jordan James (finger), QB Mac Jones (knee), RB Christian McCaffrey (calf), OG Dominick Puni (knee) and WR Jordan Watkins (ankle) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Free-agent QB Mike White (Bills) recently worked out for the San Francisco 49ers.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones will start Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan reportedly loved Jones coming out of college, but the front office decided to move up for Trey Lance. Now, Jones gets to prove Shanahan right as the team's starter. Purdy is week-to-week with a variation of turf toe, so Jones could be in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future. |

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (foot) has been ruled out for Week 2.
Footballguys view: 49ers GM John Lynch did say Purdy's injury is a week-to-week basis. Purdy is out in Week 2, and his status for the next month or so is up in the air. In the meantime, Mac Jones will start for the 49ers. A favorite of Kyle Shanahan when he came out of college, Jones will have an opportunity to impress in a good system. |
Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (toe) is out two to five weeks with a variant of turf toe.
Footballguys view: 49ers GM John Lynch said Purdy was going to be week-to-week with this injury. Mac Jones starts for the 49ers while Purdy misses time. |

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) appears to be a long shot to play in the Week 2 game and could be sidelined for several weeks, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: With Purdy likely out, Mac Jones should get the start for the 49ers. Much like Sam Darnold, Jones was supposedly a favorite of Shanahan coming out of college. The Shanahan system can elevate the play of the quarterback, so it will be interesting to see how Jones operates the offense. He's a low-end QB2 for Fantasy GMs who play in start-2 QB or superflex leagues. |
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) will not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers TE Brayden Willis could be elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster with TE George Kittle (hamstring) expected to miss the next month. If Willis is on the active roster, he'd be behind TEs Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges.
Link to storyBrayden Willis player page
San Francisco 49ers TE Luke Farrell totaled 44 snaps in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks after TE George Kittle (hamstring) left the game in the second quarter. It appears he'll be the starter going forward, with TE Jake Tonges as the primary backup.
Footballguys view: Farrell was signed earlier this year to a three-year contract. The former Jaguars tight end is mostly a blocker with only 36 catches over the last four years. A fifth-round pick out of Ohio State (2021), Farrell has never caught a touchdown pass in the NFL. Fantasy GMs have better options on the waiver wire if they lost Kittle for the next few weeks. |
