Vikings | Christian Darrisaw expected to practice Wed Sep 17, 02:39 PM
Minnesota Vikings OT Christian Darrisaw (knee) is expected to practice in full on Wednesday, Sept. 17, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Link to storyThe Vikings are placing starting RB Aaron Jones on injured reserve, sources tell NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Jones was ruled out of Sunday's game because of a hamstring injury. Now he's out for at least four more games. Jordan Mason has 24 carries over the first two games and now becomes RB1. The team is also bringing back Cam Akers to the practice squad. |

Free-agent RB Cam Akers (Saints) signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Footballguys view: With Aaron Jones sidelined by a hamstring injury, the Vikings are turning to a familiar face. Akers will return for a third stint with the franchise. There's no word on whether Akers will sign with the 53-man roster or the practice squad. Akers, 26, played under Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell with the Rams when O'Connell was the Los Angeles' offensive coordinator. The two won Super Bowl LVI together to cap the 2021 season. Jordan Mason is expected to handle a featured role in Jones' absence. |

Free-agent QB Desmond Ridder (Bengals) was signed by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Footballguys view: By signing Ridder to the 53-man roster, not the practice squad, the Vikings gain flexibility to potentially have an experienced starter as QB2, rather than press an undrafted rookie, Max Brosmer, into action if something happens to Carson Wentz while a high-ankle sprain sidelines J.J. McCarthy. |
Minnesota Vikings LB Andrew Van Ginkel (concussion) will return to practice on Wednesday, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell. He added that Van Ginkel remains in concussion protocol, but this is the next step towards being cleared to play in Week 3.

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is expected to miss two to four weeks with a high-ankle sprain. ESPN insider Adam Schefter suggests that the Oct. 19 home game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6 is a plausible return date.
Footballguys view: Carson Wentz is expected to start on Sunday against the Bengals. After that, the Vikings are scheduled to play against the Steelers in Dublin in Week 4. In Week 5, they face the Browns in London. One question is whether the Vikings will want McCarthy to travel overseas. As NFL Network's Tom Pelissero suggested, what you don't want to do with a high ankle sprain is get on an eight-hour flight that's going to cause swelling. So, missing the three-game stretch outlined makes a lot of sense. We'll continue to follow up. |
Minnesota Vikings EDGE Jonathan Greenard is second in the NFL with a 0.73-second average time to cross the line of scrimmage through two weeks.

Updating previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list because of his ankle injury, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: While the expectation isn't an IR stay, the team doesn't have an exact timeline for McCarthy's return yet. They'll see how he responds to treatment this week. "Hearing from our medical staff, it's one of those things that tends to be much worse today than it probably was in the moment for him, with adrenaline and everything," O'Connell said. The reported timeline is two to four weeks. Carson Wentz will start in McCarthy's absence. |
Minnesota Vikings C Ryan Kelly (head) and OT Justin Skule (head) are going through the concussion protocol, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Link to storyFollowing up on the previous item, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks with a high ankle sprain.
Footballguys view: NFL Network is reporting the same information and timeline. Again, with McCarthy out, backup Carson Wentz is now in line to start. The Vikings face the Bengals on Sunday and then head overseas for Weeks 4 and 5, playing in Dublin and London, respectively. It's an additional challenge as they try to get their QB1 healthy and ready to return. For now, however, Wentz will be the starter until further notice. |

Minnesota Vikings RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) is unlikely to play in Week 3 because of the hamstring injury he suffered during the Week 2 game, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: The Vikings operated with a tandem at running back in Week 2, with Jones drawing the start but Jordan Mason logging more offensive snaps. Assuming Jones is out on Sunday, Mason projects as the clear starter. Pro Football Focus' Nathan Jahnke notes that Mason demonstrated the ability to handle heavy workloads with the 49ers last season, topping an 80 percent snap share in some games. Similarly, the Vikings showed a willingness to give Jones 80 percent of snaps when healthy, indicating the staff is comfortable using a true workhorse when necessary. We'll continue to monitor this situation in coming days. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to play in the Week 3 game because of a sprained ankle, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: The injury is not expected to be long-term, but it means Carson Wentz is Minnesota's likely starter for Week 3 against the Bengals. McCarthy played most of Sunday's game behind a patchwork offensive line after center Ryan Kelly and left tackle Justin Skule left Sunday's game early because of concussions, so that's worth watching as well. Wentz got starts with the Rams and Chiefs in Week 18 the last two years, with starters resting. Sunday, if McCarthy is out, will be Wentz's first start with a team at full strength since 2022 with the Commanders. |
Minnesota Vikings RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) ran five times for 23 yards in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons before checking out due to a hamstring injury. He was targeted once, but he did not have a catch.
Footballguys view: Jones was initially characterized as questionable, but he did not return to the 22-6 loss. If Jones misses time going forward, Jordan Mason will go from sharing time with Jones to playing a featured role. We'll have more on him as further details come to light. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy completed 11-of-21 passes for 158 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, while running five times for 25 yards.
Footballguys view: Six days after he erased three quarters of futility with three touchdowns in one quarter to lead the Vikings past the Bears, McCarthy had nothing to offer in this one. In the first half, he fumbled twice (both recovered by Minnesota), threw an interception, was sacked five times, and was pressured 11 times. While the Vikings' protection has to improve, so too does McCarthy's decision-making, accuracy, and overall play. He had an off-target rate of 24 percent; the league average in 2024 was 15 percent. McCarthy and the Vikings will try to regroup for Sunday's game against the Bengals. |
Minnesota Vikings LB Jonathan Greenard finished with four total stops, including one of the solo variety, with one sack, a tackle for loss and two quarterback hits in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Minnesota Vikings may decide to wait at least one more week before having S Harrison Smith (illness) return to action, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Minnesota Vikings S Harrison Smith (undisclosed) said he's making progress in his recovery from a personal health issue that began last month, ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert reported on Wednesday. Smith, who is confident that he will resume playing in less than three weeks, declined to be specific about the nature of the issue other than to say it was 'physical' - as opposed to a mental health matter.

Minnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson collected three receptions for 15 yards versus the Chicago Bears in Week 1. He was targeted four times.

Minnesota Vikings WR Jalen Nailor had one reception (on three targets) for 28 yards in a Week 1 win over the Chicago Bears.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen was targeted once and did not have a reception against the Chicago Bears in Week 1. Thielen did catch a two-point conversion.

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson was targeted seven times, catching four passes for 44 yards and a touchdown during the team's Week 1 win over the Chicago Bears. Jefferson also ran once for four yards.
Footballguys view: That yardage was Jefferson's second-lowest total in a game since the start of the 2024 season. The only contest in which he was held to fewer yards was also by the Bears last year, when he was limited to 27. Jefferson averages 95.8 yards per game, the best in NFL history. Of course, all the numbers come in the context of a very slow start by JJ McCarthy. Fortunately, the second-year QB hit his stride in the second half. Even if McCarthy continues to have ups and downs, Jefferson's upside will keep him in WR1 territory for our purposes. |

Minnesota Vikings RB Aaron Jones carried the ball eight times for 23 yards in Week 1 versus the Chicago Bears. Jones added three receptions (on three targets) for a team-high 44 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Footballguys view: After a successful first season in Minnesota, Jones' role has changed this year. As NFL.com noted, Jordan Mason's arrival has bumped Jones out of the featured role and preserved him for maximum impact as a pass-catching back, a plan that worked wonderfully during Minnesota's fourth-quarter comeback when Jones ran an excellent choice fade route that gave JJ McCarthy an open target for a crucial score. Mason, meanwhile, handled the rugged responsibilities of a between-the-tackles hammer, bringing much-needed balance to the offense. Will it be a problem for Jones' investors? Early returns are good as Jones finished the week as RB12. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy completed 13 of 20 passes for 143 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a come-from-behind win over the Chicago Bears in Week 1. McCarthy also ran twice for 25 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown.
Footballguys view: For three quarters, McCarthy looked lost. As NFL.com's Nick Shook noted, Minnesota's offense was a no-show, reaching the fourth quarter with just 85 total yards. Then, a questionable pass interference penalty and some much-needed simplification sparked McCarthy, who began firing more accurate passes, including his first scoring toss through a tighter-than-usual window. The turnaround was stunning, and much of it depended on McCarthy's moxie. After three ugly quarters, the fourth showed us why Kevin O'Connell was confident that McCarthy was his man. It'll be interesting to see how McCarthy and the Vikings build on this win. |
Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason ran the ball 15 times for a game-high 68 yards against the Chicago Bears in Week 1. He added a seven-yard reception.
