Broncos | Jonah Coleman could vie for RB3 job Mon May 11, 12:05 AM
Denver Broncos RB Jonah Coleman might be in line for the No. 3 job behind RBs J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey. He was selected with the team's second pick, and he is tough, and Coleman can catch passes and pass protect, which should endear him to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: With Dobbins injured and unavailable down the stretch last year, Harvey was inefficient as the primary back. As a result, the Broncos entered the offseason looking to bolster the ground attack. That's precisely why they used their second pick on Coleman. Coleman is a tough, physical running back with three-down capabilities due to his ability to catch passes and pass protect. According to SI.com's Justin Melo, Sean Payton will immediately fall in love with his commitment and rugged approach.
Washington Commanders sixth-round draft choice RB Kaytron Allen signed a four-year contract with the Commanders Friday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Allen is already making noise in rookie minicamp and should have the edge to be the short yardage back and game finisher to begin the season, with a chance to lead the team in carries with the new under center running game that he is well-suited for. Allen is an excellent assignment sound runner, but he doesn't have an impressive burst or quickness.
Los Angeles Chargers RB Keaton Mitchell was not tendered by the Baltimore Ravens because of his salary figure, as well as his lack of flexibility. 'He was gonna make over $3 million this year based on the system, which was a restricted free agency system, the tender,' general manager Eric DeCosta said. 'Again, not a real special teams guy. A talented space runner. He's not necessarily the most dynamic pass-catching back, so then it becomes, well, would you rather have (Derrick Henry) on the field or Keaton?'

Seattle Seahawks RB Kenny McIntosh (knee) is a speedy back who has battled knee injuries in the early part of his career, including a torn ACL suffered in training camp last summer. 'He's coming along,' head coach Mike Macdonald said last month. 'It's tough to put a timetable to it. He's training his tail off. I think it's one of those deals where, 'Hey, let's just keep hitting those benchmarks until we can evaluate what it's going to look like in the fall.''

Seattle Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) continues to recover from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered during the Divisional Round of the playoffs. He is expected to return at some point this season, but head coach Mike Macdonald doesn't know exactly when Charbonnet will be back. 'I can't give you a timeline right now, but I can tell you he's killing it as we knew he would,' coach Mike Macdonald said during the draft. 'With these long-term injuries -- I say it all the time, you've just got to stack these things. You have to be able to get to the next thing and go rip it, and that's what he's doing. I'm excited for Zach.'
Footballguys view: The Seahawks can afford to be conservative with Charbonnet's return after taking Jadarian Price at the end of the first round of the draft. He isn't worth taking in typical leagues because his ceiling even when he returns isn't very high.
Zach Charbonnet player page
Seattle Seahawks RB Emanuel Wilson is a bigger back at 5-foot-10 and 226 pounds, who gives the team a power runner while RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) is on the shelf recovering from ACL surgery in February. Despite the absence of Charbonnet, likely until later in the regular season, Wilson still has to contend with top healthy holdover RB George Holani and rookie draft pick RB Jadarian Price for the top spot on the depth chart.
Footballguys view: If Price isn't ready for prime time - he was a back up in college because he played with Jeremiyah Love - then Wilson will be the primary early down and goal line back for the Seahawks. He's worth a late round pick in best ball leagues and an end of the bench spot in deep dynasty leagues.
Seattle Seahawks RB George Holani is the lone healthy holdover in the backfield, and his work catching the ball and working in pass protection makes him a strong candidate for third-down work, even when RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) is ready to return. Holani is battling free-agent addition RB Emanuel Wilson and draft pick RB Jadarian Price for a more meaningful role until Charbonnet can get back.
Footballguys view: Holani doesn't have standalone value in fantasy leagues, but he could lower Jadarian Price's ceiling if he proves to be a capable third down back. If injuries thin the backfield, he could have spot start fantasy value during the season.
Seattle Seahawks RB Jadarian Price is viewed as a replacement for RB Kenneth Walker III (Chiefs), but he isn't the clear-cut RB1 with RBs Emanuel Wilson and George Holani in the mix, and RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) expected back at some point. The team isn't asking Price to go from RB2 in college to a high-volume starter in the NFL. He averaged roughly 18.5 snaps and nearly nine touches per game over the past two seasons at Notre Dame, and he also returned kickoffs, so he could be used in that role, even with the presence of WR Rashid Shaheed.
Footballguys view: The Seahawks aren't going away from a committee backfield, but that doesn't mean that Price isn't worth a top five selection in dynasty rookie drafts. If he gets goal line work and leads the team in carries, that should be more than enough to be a fantasy RB2, with room to grow in the future because Zach Charbonnet is a free agent in 2027.

Updating previous reports, undrafted free-agent WR Caullin Lacy (Louisville), RB Sam Scott (Wyoming), WR Malik McClain (Arizona State), RB Chip Trayanum (Toledo), TE Chase Curtis (TCU) and WR DT Sheffield (Rutgers) officially signed with the New York Jets Friday, May 8. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings sixth-round draft choice RB Demond Claiborne signed a four-year contract with the Vikings Friday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Claiborne is a compact, shifty back with speed who is comparable to Devonta Freeman. The Vikings top two backs will be free agents next year, and Aaron Jones has missed at least five games in two of the last three seasons. Expect Claiborne to get a chance to show what he can do at some point this season, which could secure him a role in the Vikings backfield going forward.
Updating previous reports, undrafted free-agent QB Mark Gronowski (Iowa), RB Anthony Hankerson (Oregon State), WR Donaven McCulley (Michigan) and RB Le'Veon Moss (Texas A&M) officially signed with the Miami Dolphins Friday, May 8. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Moss is a power back and the only true pile pusher on the Dolphins roster. We'll see if he can overtake 2025 sixth round pick Ollie Gordon, who didn't make much of an impact when he got on the field as a rookie.
Updating previous reports, undrafted free-agent RB Josh Pitsenberger (Yale), WR Treyvhon Saunders (Colgate), WR Daniel Sobkowicz (Illinois State), WR Jalen Walthall (Incarnate Word) and RB Noah Whittington (Oregon) officially signed with the Houston Texans Friday, May 8. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyUpdating previous reports, undrafted free-agent RB Kentrel Bullock (South Alabama), RB Jamal Haynes (Georgia Tech), TE Josh Kattus (Kentucky) and WR Noah Thomas (Georgia) signed with the Cincinnati Bengals Friday, May 8. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Haynes is a fire hydrant with quickness and speed who could unseat 2025 sixth round pick Tahj Brooks as the third string back. Brooks failed to impress last year, so his roster spot is vulnerable.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Michael Wiley was waived Saturday, May 9.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers third-round draft choice RB Kaelon Black signed a four-year contract with the 49ers Friday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan can never have enough running backs, apparently. Black is a try hard runner who is not the most athletically gifted, but will be a dependable assignment-sound back. We'll be monitoring 49ers news to learn whether Black, 2025 fifth round pick Jordan James, or 2024 fourth round pick Isaac Guerendo is the first in line for touches if Christian McCaffrey misses time.
New England Patriots seventh-round draft choice RB Jam Miller signed a four-year contract with the Patriots Friday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: In a best case scenario, Miller could follow the career path of Benjarvus Green-Ellis, another hard-nosed runner between the tackles who carved out a role for himself in the Patriots offense after being added as an undrafted free agent.
Indianapolis Colts seventh-round draft choice RB Seth McGowan signed a four-year contract with the Colts Thursday, May 7. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyNew York Jets RB Breece Hall agreed to a three-year extension worth up to $45.75 million on Friday, May 8.
Footballguys view: Hall is now the third-highest paid running back in the NFL with an average annual salary of $15.25 million. There were rumblings last year about Hall getting traded, and even this offseason those resurfaced. Instead of moving Hall, the Jets now get a new deal done. He's an RB2 for Fantasy GMs as the Jets try to make the right improvements around him on offense.
Arizona Cardinals RB Jeremiyah Love has signed his rookie deal with the team on Friday, May 8. It is a four-year deal with $53 million guaranteed.
Footballguys view: Love has playmaker tendencies, and he's a player that can score from anywhere on the field. It's a crowded backfield in Arizona with Tyler Allgeier, James Conner, and Trey Benson, so projected Love's fantasy production in 2026 is somewhat complicated. With the right role, Love could be the Cardinals' version of Jahmyr Gibbs. Will that role materialize this year? That's yet to be determined.
Undrafted free-agent RB Rodney Hammond (Sacramento State) has been invited to participate in the Denver Broncos rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, according to sources.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs RB Kenneth Walker III said he has been spending time with QB Patrick Mahomes this offseason and believes he will be more involved in the passing game with the Chiefs.
Footballguys view: Walker has earned a reputation as a run-first back in his four NFL seasons, averaging fewer than 40 catches and 300 yards receiving per year over four seasons in Seattle. But Walker has been spending time with Patrick Mahomes this offseason trying to get ready for an expanded role as a pass-catcher -- and, over the past five years, three different KC RBs have had at least 40 receptions in a season. Two of those seasons came with OC Eric Bieniemy. The return of Bieniemy could mean more opportunities for Walker.
Seattle Seahawks first-round pick RB Jadarian Price fits the team's outside-zone running scheme as that's the system he ran in at Notre Dame. Notre Dame running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider says that system is Price's 'love language.' Seider also noted that Price's experience making an impact while sharing snaps with Jeremiyah Love will also benefit him once RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) returns.
Footballguys view: Price's 6.0 yards per rush over three seasons at Notre Dame suggest he can bring an explosive element to Seattle's offense similar to what Ken Walker III did. But will it earn a robust role? With Zach Charbonnet likely to miss much of the season, the Seahawks signed Emanuel Wilson to give them a power runner, while George Holani has a skillset that could fit a third-down role. Both will get opportunities. Still, Price's Footballguys projection works out to 16 touches per game, and the rookie could provide RB2 value.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Emmett Johnson signed a four-year deal with the team on Tuesday, May 16. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Footballguys view: As Footballguy Dave Kluge noted in the 2026 Rookie Draft Guide, Johnson could be the Chiefs' primary pass catcher. Ken Walker III hasn't displayed a consistent ability to draw targets through his career, and Andy Reid likes to have designated roles for his running backs. There's a narrow path that needs to play a valuable role. But, Kluge added, "The floor for Johnson is low. He fell to Day 3 and doesn't have the best athletic profile. In a weak rookie class overall, he's worth a late-round dart throw in deep leagues, but not without downside."
New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara said he's excited to see what he and RB Travis Etienne can do together.
Footballguys view: Kamara has made it evident that he wants to stay put with the Saints and play a role in the club's plans moving forward. During a podcast interview with former teammate Terron Armstead that was released Monday, Kamara praised QB Tyler Shough and the team's first-round draft pick, Jordyn Tyson. He was also excited about what he and RB Travis Etienne Jr. can do together. Kamara, 30, dealt with ankle and knee issues last season that limited him to 11 games. His role this year is unclear, but complementary work behind Etienne seems like a best-case outcome.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kaelon Black will probably have a chance to earn the No. 2 running back job during training camp, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
Footballguys view: According to Maiocco, a veteran beat writer who's covered the Niners for 30 years, Isaac Guerendo will be in a battle to hold onto a roster spot after losing his place on the depth chart to Jordan James last season. Maiocco added: "The 49ers really like Black, a third-round pick, which suggests he has a strong chance to emerge as Christian McCaffrey's primary backup." We'll watch for more.
San Francisco 49ers RB Kaelon Black was the sixth running back taken in the 2026 NFL Draft when he was picked in the third round. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Black was the second-best back in the draft behind No. 3 overall pick RB Jeremiyah Love, who went to the Arizona Cardinals. 'We had him as the second-rated back on the board,' Shanahan said this past week in a radio interview. 'So, that's just our evaluation, right or wrong that's our evaluation.'
Footballguys view: Somebody on this roster is going to have contingent upside if Christian McCaffrey goes down, but it's not clear Black is that guy. According to Footballguy Sigmund Bloom, Black is a high-floor try-hard back, but not clearly better than the team's current RB2, Jordan James. He is better than the next man on the depth chart, Isaac Guerendo, but Shanahan's track record on backs in the third/fourth round range of the draft should give you pause. "Let someone else take the third running back drafted on the promise of draft capital," Bloom advises.
Presbyterian RB Zach Switzer was grateful for a chance to take part in a rookie minicamp this week. The practices are not padded, and mostly about learning the playbook and going through individual drills. 'I'm super grateful, super honored, and super blessed to have the opportunity to be able to do something like this and achieve one of my dreams,' he said. 'And until [making a team], I'm just going to keep telling them I'm grateful for the opportunity.'
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers RB Jordan James is the 'current favorite' to be the backup behind RB Christian McCaffrey, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.
Footballguys view: James is the favorite for the no.2 spot...for now. He will compete with rookie Kaelon Black for that job. This is a battle that all Fantasy GMs should be dialed into when training camp and the preseason get here. Anyone wanting to handcuff a player to McCaffrey (or 'jock block' the McCaffrey owner) will want to know who is the leader in the summer.
San Francisco 49ers RB Kaelon Black can help the offense 'in a big way,' according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: Black was drafted a bit sooner than some were expecting, but John Lynch says 'forget that consensus board!' (probably). Black was selected in the third round, and he was the first player drafted in the 2026 class that wasn't invited to the Combine. He's a no-nonsense runner who is not afraid of the grind. Black is limited as a receiver out of the backfield, so perhaps the 'big way' he can help the offense is as a two-down banger to begin his career.

Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyBaltimore Ravens fifth-round draft choice RB Adam Randall signed a four-year contract with the Ravens Thursday, April 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Randall is in the mold of Antonio Gibson, a wide receiver convert to running back who has the traits, but still needs to learn the position. GM Eric DeCosta said that this pick was made by owner Steve Bisciotti. That probably happens more often than we know, but it's odd to be told so directly. Randall could be viewed as a possible replacement for Derrick Henry if he takes to the position, so he's worth taking in the later rounds of dynasty rookie drafts.
Tennessee Titans fifth-round draft choice RB Nick Singleton signed a four-year contract with the Titans Thursday, April 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Singleton is a size/speed back who "plays like a car with the brake lines cut" according to NFL.com's draft guru Lance Zierlein. Both of the Titans top two backs are free agents after the season, so Singleton is worth taking in the late rounds of dynasty rookie drafts while we wait to see if better handling is installed in his system.
Las Vegas Raiders fourth-round draft choice RB Mike Washington Jr. signed a four-year contract with the Raiders Thursday, April 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Washington had the best size/speed combination at running back in this draft class, but he still fell to the fourth round, because his vision and footwork don't really harness his energy... yet. The Raiders depth chart at running back behind Ashton Jeanty lacks proven players, so with a good summer, the rookie could be one injury away from having fantasy relevance.
Kansas City Chiefs general manager said the team signed RB Kenneth Walker III in order to 'establish the run' early on in the season.
