Texans | Deshaun Watson at practice    Wed Jul 28, 11:45 AM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is participating in practice Wednesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Watson got snaps at safety and running back...and then he got some fourth-string QB reps. Texans coach David Culley said Watson is behind because he missed offseason workouts and needs as many reps as possible. It's just another sign that Watson will never play for the Texans again (most likely) as the NFL continues the investigation into his 22 instances of sexual misconduct.

Texans | Deshaun Watson available    Mon Jul 26, 08:40 AM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson can be landed in a trade, but the asking price is at least three first-round draft picks.

Footballguys view: Things are getting more interesting in Houston with Watson reporting to camp. The team has been listening to offers for some time. Watson was respectful when he reported to camp but reiterated he didn't want to be in Houston. His legal issues will have to be resolved before he plays for another team if and when he is traded. Earlier reports have indicated that Watson is not going to settle out of court, meaning his availability for 2021 - and perhaps even 2022 - is in question. Stay tuned.

Texans | Deshaun Watson officially reports    Sun Jul 25, 04:33 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson officially reported for the start of training camp Sunday, July 25, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Watson was subject to $50,000 per day in fines if he failed to report to camp. He is still seeking a trade, but no deal is imminent at this point.

Texans | Deshaun Watson reporting to camp    Sun Jul 25, 11:57 AM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson will report to training camp Sunday, July 25, in order to avoid being fined $50,000 per day for not appearing, according to a source. However, he still wants the club to trade him.

Footballguys view: Watson is basically forcing the NFL and the Texans hand with this move. The commissioner has not placed him on the exempt list during this investigation, which would allow Watson to get paid, but not play until being reinstated from the list. That could mean that their internal investigation has found no evidence of serious wrongdoing, but the NFL also might have been waiting to make a decision on the exempt list until they had to, and now they do. If Watson reports to camp, then the assumption will be that the NFL isn't going to take any discipline against him at this time, which would open the door to him being traded, provided that the NFL basically cleared him the way they did Tyreek Hill after conducting an internal investigation into accusations of child abuse. Basically this move could speed up the timeline of resolution of this situation, which increases Watson's fantasy value, but it is unclear who is going to take the decisive step and exactly when it will happen.

Texans | Houston acquires Anthony Miller    Sat Jul 24, 09:17 PM

The Houston Texans acquired WR Anthony Miller from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a late-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Saturday, July 24, according to league sources.

Footballguys view: Miller's stock has bottomed out after the Bears moved up to take him in the second round in 2018. He will have a chance to make the Texans jumbled depth chart at wide receiver and could help his case by contributing on special teams. Sixth-round pick Dazz Newsome has a chance to start in the slot for the Bears with a good summer, but he has to be cleared to come back from a broken collarbone he had surgically repaired in early June.

Texans | Rookie WR Collins Could See Snaps Early    Wed Jul 14, 04:30 PM

Aaron Reiss, from The Athletic, reports Houston Texans rookie WR Nico Collins should have a chance to see a lot of snaps early, given he doesn't face stiff competition ahead of him on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: The Texans are a team in flux right now. The quarterback situation is unsettled, although we think Tyrod Taylor begins the season as the starter. The wide receiver position has some question marks for guys like Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb and Keke Coutee. Collins is a big-bodied rookie from Michigan the Texans picked up in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft. He's got a nice size/weight/speed combination, a nose for the end zone (13 touchdowns over the last two seasons) and can make plays 'above the rim' because of his wingspan and vertical ability. Collins is a smooth route runner who is worth monitoring in all dynasty formats. We'll see if he can work his way into the mix as a rookie as some are expecting.

Texans | Mark Ingram on outside looking in?    Wed Jul 7, 12:56 PM

Houston Texans RB Mark Ingram is in danger of not making the team after the team restructured RB David Johnson's contract and doubled his guaranteed money. Ingram will compete with RBs Phillip Lindsay and Rex Burkhead.

Footballguys view: Earlier this year, The Athletic was speculating that Lindsay would be the one on the outside looking in. Well, nobody wins when betting against Lindsay so it might be Ingram on the bubble. The lack of special teams ability from both is the reason why this is even a talking point. Watch this battle in training camp to see if one of these former 1,000-yard rushers is going to be released.

Texans | Marcus Cannon had knee surgery    Fri Jun 18, 12:47 PM

Houston Texans OT Marcus Cannon (knee) underwent minor knee surgery following the team's organized team activities, but he reportedly is feeling good and his status for training camp in July isn't expected to be affected, according to a report Friday, June 18.

Footballguys view: Cannon is in the mix to start at guard, so this will be something to monitor when training camp opens. The team also has Max Scharping, Lane Taylor, and Justin McCray to vie for a guard spot if Cannon suffers a setback in his recovery.

Texans | Phillip Lindsay, Mark Ingram not locks    Tue Jun 8, 01:46 AM

Houston Texans RBs Phillip Lindsay and Mark Ingram are likely competing for one spot on the final roster, in the opinion of The Athletic's Aaron Reiss, who points out neither player is a special teams contributor.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting position the former 1,000-yard rushers find themselves in. Lindsay is a dynamic player in space and runs with quickness and decisiveness. Ingram is a no-nonsense back who is swift to and through the hole. While Ingram is a better receiver out of the backfield, Lindsay is younger and has fresher legs. We'll see how the pecking order in the Texans backfield shakes out - and if there's room for both.

Texans | Rex Burkhead to Texans    Tue Jun 1, 11:02 AM

Free-agent RB Rex Burkhead (Patriots) signed an undisclosed deal with the Houston Texans Tuesday, June 1.

Footballguys view: The Texans backfield gets even more cramped with the addition of Burkhead. The veteran all-purpose back joins a room with guys like David Johnson, Phillip Lindsay and Mark Ingram. There's not a lot of work there for Burkhead if he makes the 53-man roster.

Texans | Davis Mills signs rookie deal    Wed May 26, 11:31 AM

Houston Texans third-round pick QB Davis Mills signed his four-year, $5,222,110 rookie contract Wednesday, May 26.

Footballguys view: Mills only had 11 career starts in college at Stanford. He's a play-action quarterback who can attack all levels of the field. The Texans could see him as a potential quarterback of the future but he's got plenty to work on - mainly staying healthy and developing his sense against the blitz. We'll see Mills work to move up the depth chart in a quarterback room with veterans Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Driskel. Who knows what's going to happen in the Deshaun Watson situation.

Texans | Ryan Finley let go    Mon May 24, 02:42 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Finley was released Monday, May 24.

Footballguys view: The Texans signed Jeff Driskel last week, further cramping their quarterback room. Finley is young and has potential but will now be on his third team in three seasons.

Texans | Deshaun Watson not at workouts    Mon May 24, 01:39 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is not attending the offseason workouts and is still seeking a trade, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Watson isn't going to show up to anything until his off-field stuff is taken care of. ESPN's Sarah Barshop reports a member of Tony Buzbee's legal team has approached Watson to discuss "working things out." We'll see if a settlement is the way things go with training camp and the regular season fast approaching. When the legal issue is resolved, Watson is still likely to be suspended by the NFL under their personal conduct policy.

Texans | Nico Collins expected to have solid role    Sat May 22, 05:39 PM

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins is expected to have a significant role in the passing game during his rookie season.

Footballguys view: Collins is competing to be third or fourth on the depth chart as a rookie. That may be a "solid" role in NFL terms but from a fantasy perspective there's not a lot there. However, if someone above him on the depth chart gets banged up - and guys like Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb and Keke Coutee have all battled injuries - then Collins could be asked to do more. Collins, a big-bodied rookie from Michigan, uses his size well for 50-50 balls and has good build up speed which makes him a nice deep threat.

Texans | Houston adds Taywan Taylor    Wed May 19, 09:33 PM

Free-agent WR Taywan Taylor (Browns) agreed to terms with the Houston Texans Wednesday, May 19. Terms off the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Taylor was once a third-round pick for the Titans back in 2017. In 2019, the Browns gave the Titans a seventh-round pick for Taylor, and that pick turned out to be quarterback Cole McDonald, who is now with the Cardinals. Taylor picked a good team to try to claw from the bottom of the depth chart into a roster spot, but he is obviously still a long shot.

Texans | Jeff Driskel signing with Houston    Wed May 19, 08:23 PM

Free-agent QB Jeff Driskel (Broncos) is signing a one-year contract with the Houston Texans, according to his agents Wednesday, May 19. The deal is worth up to $2.5 million.

Footballguys view: The Texans now have a quarterback room that includes Driskel, Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Finley, and third-round pick Davis Mills - and Deshaun Watson. It's difficult to conclude anything but the Texans expecting to be without Watson this season, and maybe beyond. Driskel is athletic but limited as a passer and best suited as an emergency backup. Taylor is certain to make the team in any event, but if Driskel beats out Finley, it will mean the team gave up a small amount of draft capital (bump from 7th to 6th round) for nothing.

Texans | Rookie Mills to Start at Some Point?    Tue May 18, 04:48 PM

Houston Texans rookie quarterback Davis Mills should start "at some point" this year according to Aaron Reiss from The Athletic.

Footballguys view: We should see Tyrod Taylor begin the season for the Texans as the starter. When the season is lost (shouldn't take that long) then the team might want to see what Mills can do. During his college career at Stanford, Mills showed like a prototypical pocket passer. He's big, has a strong arm, is not terribly mobile, makes quick decisions and can distribute the ball all over the field. With limited experience (11 games started), Mills has a lot to work on and could use the reps.

Texans | Two more Houston rookies sign    Wed May 12, 08:25 PM

Houston Texans TE Brevin Jordan and DT Roy Lopez both signed four-year rookie contracts Wednesday, May 12. Financial terms of the contracts weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jordan is an athletic tight end who can get open down the seam. He can create large windows for his quarterback and is a player we'll monitor closely as he potentially moves to the top of the Texans depth chart at the tight end position.

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins signed his four-year rookie contract with the Houston Texans Wednesday, May 12, according to his agents. Financials terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Collins is a big-bodied rookie from Michigan the Texans picked up in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft. He knows how to use his frame to box out smaller defenders and can use his build up speed to attack a defense deep. Collins will push for a job behind Brandin Cooks on the depth chart.

Undrafted free-agent WRs Marlon Williams (Central Florida) and Damon Hazelton (Missouri) agreed to terms with the Houston Texans on Sunday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Williams was an ascending talent in college at UCF, ranking 5th in the FBS in receiving yards per game (129.9) last year. He led all FBS receivers in broken tackles and has no problem running through arm tackles. Williams is not overly fast and may struggle to create separation in the NFL.

Texans | Nico Collins lands in Houston    Fri Apr 30, 11:03 PM

Michigan WR Nico Collins was selected by the Houston Texans with the 89th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Collins has a nice size/speed combination and knows how to use his frame to his advantage. He can make contested catches but scouts were concerned about how many he has to make because he lacks separation ability. We'll see if Collins can work on that skill to become a better pro.

Texans | Houston selects Davis Mills    Fri Apr 30, 09:45 PM

Stanford QB Davis Mills was selected by the Houston Texans with the 67th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Texans | GM mum on Deshaun Watson    Fri Apr 16, 12:35 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is currently facing more than 20 civil lawsuits, but general manager Nick Caserio is refusing to get into specifics on the issue, Watson's future or the team's possible contingency plans at quarterback. 'I know (owner) Cal (McNair) ... put a letter out a few weeks ago, just relative to the organizational stance, relative to where we are. So I don't have anything to add other than it's a legal process,' Caserio said Friday, April 16 in a pre-draft news conference. 'We're respectful of the legal process and where that is. So we're focused on today. We're focused on getting ready for the offseason program and getting ready for the draft. So that's where our focus is.'

Footballguys view: The Texans will trade Watson when they can. Watson's legal proceedings need to be resolved before any team out there is going to give up likely still a significant haul for the star quarterback. We may not have any clarity on this situation any time soon, so Watson may not be dealt until before the start of the regular season. With the draft less than two weeks away it seems foolish to think he can be traded by then. This could go well into the summer.
