Falcons | J'Mon Moore joins Atlanta    Fri Jul 30, 07:23 PM

Free-agent WR J'Mon Moore (Texans) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Friday, July 30. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick of the Packers in the 2018 NFL draft, Moore has bounced around to several teams since then. He's a big-bodied player who knows how to use his size but only has two pro catches in the regular season. Moore can also work on special teams, improving his chances of making the Falcons even though he's a long shot to do so.

Falcons | Matt Gono will miss some games    Thu Jul 29, 08:24 PM

Atlanta Falcons OG Matt Gono (neck) will not participate in training camp and will miss part of the regular season, according to head coach Arthur Smith. Gono has a chance to play at some point during the 2021 season.

Footballguys view: Gono was expected to be in the mix to start at left guard and he also can play tackle, so the Falcons saw him as a valuable part of their offensive line. They were willing to give 3.384 million dollars on a second-round RFA tender to protect him from other potential suitors.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley in action    Thu Jul 29, 10:53 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley (foot) returned to practice Thursday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Falcons here. Ridley had offseason foot surgery which kept him out of action during OTAs. He's back out there and should be ready to rock in Week 1. Fantasy GMs look at him as a top-5 receiver, and his current ADP is WR5 (2.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Matt Ryan unafraid to sling it deep    Mon Jul 12, 09:33 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan ranked second in the league with 5,337 intended air yards in 2021, according to Pro Football Reference.

Footballguys view: We'll see what Ryan's numbers will be like this year. New head coach Arthur Smith should craft his high-powered scheme to what Ryan does best - and that's attack down the field. Ryan and the Falcons will be working without superstar WR Julio Jones this year, but they've had to do that before when Jones was banged up. Expect Ryan to continue slinging it deep in 2021.

Falcons | Bigger role for Olamide Zaccheaus?    Wed Jul 7, 09:35 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Olamide Zaccheaus should be the 'immediate benefactor' of the trade of WR Julio Jones to the Tennessee Titans, according to Deen Worley of FalconsWire.

Footballguys view: Zaccheaus had a couple of good games in 2020, including a four-catch, 103-yard performance (with one touchdown) against the Broncos in Week 9. With Jones missing time last year, Zaccheaus got more work and looked good. Now, Jones is gone and Zaccheaus will compete for the no.3 job on the WR depth chart behind Calvin Ridley and Russell Gage. Nobody is drafting Zaccheaus but keep him on your waiver wire speed dial in deeper leagues.

Falcons | Kyle Pitts financials    Tue Jun 29, 01:31 PM

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons first-round-pick TE Kyle Pitts (Florida) signed a four-year contract worth $32.9 million on Tuesday, June 29. The deal includes a team option for the season.

Footballguys view: Pitts is one of the most exciting rookie skill position players in this draft class. With Julio Jones gone, the Falcons are going to have a revamped passing attack. Pitts is listed as a tight end but he's really a super sized wide receiver. Expect the Falcons to make him one of the featured targets in the offense this season. He should perform like a top-10 tight end this year, and if you want him you'll have to pay up to get him. Pitts has a current ADP of TE5 (5.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Kyle Pitts ready to seal the deal    Tue Jun 29, 01:08 PM

Atlanta Falcons first-round-pick TE Kyle Pitts (Florida) agreed to terms on a four-year contract that includes a team option for a fifth season on Tuesday, June 29. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Falcons | Mike Davis difficult to corral    Sun Jun 27, 11:27 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Mike Davis broke a tackle once every 7.9 rushing attempts in 2020 as a member of the Carolina Panthers - the best rate among all qualified running backs - according to Pro Football Reference.

Footballguys view: Mike Davis has always been a strong runner. Dating back to his days in college at South Carolina, Davis breaks tackles regularly. He filled in nicely for an injured Christian McCaffrey last season and gets a shot as the lead back for the Falcons this year. Davis could post career-best numbers as a rusher this season with that role, but he may not be able to match the 59 catches he had in 2020. Projecting him as a low-end RB2/flex option feels right.

Falcons | Cordarrelle Patterson to do it all?    Sat Jun 26, 10:13 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Cordarrelle Patterson will 'likely be a gadget guy' for the offense this season, according to Tori McElhaney of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Mike Davis has never been an entrenched starting running back, but he's atop the Falcons depth chart going into camp, so everyone is interested in knowing who is running behind him. Even though Patterson has some experience and success as running back, this item makes it sounds like he won't be much of a factor. Qadree Ollison had a good spring and appears to be the best candidate to have value in the Falcons backfield if Davis falters.

Falcons | Atlanta adds to front office    Thu Jun 24, 12:30 PM

Falcons | Patterson in a More Traditional Role?    Tue Jun 22, 01:49 PM

Tori McElhaney, from The Athletic, reports Atlanta Falcons running back Cordarrelle Patterson could play a more traditional role in the offense.

Footballguys view: So, which role would that be? Patterson is a converted wide receiver and should be a gadget player for the Falcons. If he's asked to do more wide receiver things that makes sense. If he's asked to do more running back things, which we guess that's what McElhaney is speculating here, then that makes sense as well. Patterson is a strong runner who can get to top speed in a hurry, plus he can change direction without losing much speed. The Falcons backfield should feature Mike Davis with Patterson getting sprinkled in here and there.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley set for heavy workload?    Sat Jun 19, 09:56 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley was targeted on 19.9 percent of his routes when Tennessee Titans WR Julio Jones was also on the field in 2020, and he was targeted on 30.8 percent of his routes when Jones wasn't on the field.

Footballguys view: Ridley is definitely in for a boost in volume, but the Falcons didn't have a player like Kyle Pitts when those stats were compiled. We also need to monitor Ridley's recovery from offseason foot surgery before fully buying in at an inflated ADP.

Falcons | Richie Grant inks rookie deal    Fri Jun 18, 12:30 PM

Atlanta Falcons S Richie Grant on Friday, July 18, signed his rookie contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Footballguys view: The Falcons lost their top three safeties to free agency this year, so Grant is going to play a big role right away in Dean Pees defense. He's more of a coverage safety than a box safety, so his IDP impact will be limited.

Falcons | Matt Gono recently had surgery    Thu Jun 17, 07:36 PM

Atlanta Falcons OG Matt Gono (undisclosed) recently had surgery to repair an undisclosed injury and should be able to play at some point this season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Gono was considered a strong option to start at left guard, and he also provides valuable depth at offensive tackle. The team liked him enough to give him a second round RFA tender, so this is a hit for their offensive line, which is already going to have a new starter at center in addition to left guard.

Falcons | Jeff Badet set to join Atlanta    Wed Jun 16, 04:49 PM

Free-agent WR Jeff Badet (Washington) reportedly agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, June 16.

Footballguys view: Badet came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma in 2018. He's bounced around to a few teams and played in the XFL as well. Badet only played three games for Washington last year and had zero targets. He's going to compete for a spot at the end of the depth chart with the Falcons.

Falcons | Atlanta wraps up four rookie deals    Tue Jun 15, 03:52 PM

Atlanta Falcons third-round pick OL Jalen Mayfield (Michigan), fifth-round pick DL Ta'Quon Graham (Texas), sixth-round pick LB Adetokunbo Ogundeji (Notre Dame) and sixth-round pick CB Avery Williams (Boise State) signed four-year contracts Tuesday, June 15. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Falcons | Frank Darby inks rookie deal    Tue Jun 15, 02:58 PM

Atlanta Falcons sixth-round pick WR Frank Darby (Arizona State) signed a four-year contract Tuesday, June 15. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Darby is a late-round pick but we love his upside in deep dynasty formats. He was a consistent playmaker each day of practice at the Senior Bowl earlier this year and Darby goes all out to make a play. The Falcons wide receiver room looks different without Julio Jones, so we'll see how Darby can work his way onto the 53-man roster in training camp.

Falcons | Russell Gage to expand role?    Fri Jun 11, 11:26 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Russell Gage Jr. has 'grown his game' and will play more than just the slot, according to head coach Arthur Smith. 'So we envision Russ playing multiple spots,' Smith said.

Footballguys view: With Julio Jones traded away, the Falcons are going to have more work for guys like Gage. He didn't do much with a larger opportunity in 2020, so we'll see if he can work better this year by playing all over the field.

Falcons | Kyle Pitts being fast tracked    Fri Jun 11, 09:42 AM

Atlanta Falcons first-round pick TE Kyle Pitts is being force-fed in practice in order to integrate him into the offense. Pitts has been moving around the formations in the open OTAs and the mandatory minicamp.

Footballguys view: Pitts could become the centerpiece of the pass offense and threaten George Kittle for TE3 status in the fantasy football ranks. His arrow is pointing way up and you probably need to reach for him to secure his services in redraft leagues. It could prove to be a brilliant move.

Falcons | Julio Jones officially gone    Wed Jun 9, 05:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones and a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft were officially dealt to the Tennessee Titans Wednesday, June 9, in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2022 draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft.

Footballguys view: The Falcons move forward with Calvin Ridley as their no.1 receiver. The addition of first-round rookie TE Kyle Pitts should help cover up the loss of a superstar like Jones.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley recovering from foot surgery    Wed Jun 9, 01:17 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley (foot) underwent 'minor' foot surgery two weeks ago to address a lingering issue from last season.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate that Ridley should be fine for the start of training camp. With Julio Jones traded to the Titans, Ridley is the no.1 receiver on the depth chart and projecting him for around 100 catches in 2021 feels right. His ADP has risen because of the Jones trade, and Ridley is going off the board as one of the first five wide receivers selected in fantasy drafts - usually at the turn or somewhere early in the second round.

Falcons | Atlanta agrees to trade Julio Jones    Sun Jun 6, 12:07 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones will be traded to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for at least a second-round draft choice, according to sources. The deal may not be official for a few days since Jones needs to take a physical.

Footballguys view: Kyle Pitts and Calvin Ridley will both have outsized opportunity in the wake of this deal, and Russell Gage should get a shot to start. The new regime should also give Olamide Zaccheaus and sixth-round pick Frank Darby a chance to win more playing time in the vacuum left by the departure of one of the true icons of the franchise.

Falcons | Hayden Hurst motivated for 2021    Fri Jun 4, 01:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Hayden Hurst will be a free agent following the 2021 season after his fifth-year option wasn't picked up, and he's aiming for a strong showing. 'It's a big year for me, now,' Hurst said Thursday, June 3. 'Obviously, being a free agent at the end of the year. I've got my priorities in line, and I know what I need to do this year.'

Footballguys view: Hurst is in a tough spot with Kyle Pitts in town, but if Julio Jones is traded, he'll be in line for more snaps and targets in a two tight end offense. Hurst's fantasy value is on life support right now, but he's right to be looking to his next team for possible growth.

Falcons | Julio Jones may look for new deal    Mon May 31, 02:18 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones may ask for a new contract if he is traded to a new team this offseason, according to a source. He currently has three years left on his contract worth $38.326 million.

Footballguys view: Any team that trades for Jones is likely going to look for a new deal to make his contract more friendly to the salary cap. Jones is currently signed through the 2023 season. His cap hit in 2021 is around $23 million and there is $40.5 million remaining in dead money.

Falcons | Big offer for Julio Jones?    Thu May 27, 10:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones has been a part of several trade offers, including at least one offer of a future first-round pick, sources told Dianna Russini of ESPN.

Footballguys view: That's not surprising. Teams like the Colts, Raiders, Chargers and Ravens should be interested in the veteran superstar. We should see Jones dealt in the near future as the Falcons go over these deals.

Falcons | Atlanta signs Tajae Sharpe    Mon May 24, 05:13 PM

Free-agent WR Tajae Sharpe (Chiefs) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, May 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Sharpe is a reserve receiver type who is going to try and earn a spot with his special teams ability. If (when?) the Falcons trade Julio Jones, that gives a guy like Sharpe a better shot to make the 53-man roster.

Falcons | Julio Jones requested trade    Mon May 24, 11:49 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones requested a trade a few months ago, according to sources, and that's when the team began listening to offers.

Footballguys view: We are unlikely to see Jones in a Falcons uniform this year. The speculation is that a second-round pick would be needed to secure the services of the superstar veteran receiver. Teams like the Ravens, Raiders, Chargers and Patriots could be interested. Earlier reports also indicated Jones may want to play with Cam Newton. Great news for the Patriots as Newton is their starter...for now. This Jones thing is far from over, so as always stay tuned.

Falcons | Matt Ryan steady    Mon May 24, 09:48 AM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has completed at least 65 percent of his passes with a 90-plus QB rating, 4,400-plus yards and 26-plus touchdown passes in each of the last three years.

Footballguys view: Ryan is steady, that's the name of his game. While he may not quite be the player he used to be (MVP level), Ryan is still one of the better starters in the league and has plenty of football left. If (when?) Julio Jones is traded away, we'll see how Ryan's game and numbers shift in 2021.

Falcons | Julio Jones for a second?    Mon May 24, 09:17 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones could be acquired for a second-round pick, in the opinion of SI.com's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. There should be several teams interested in the veteran superstar receiver. That list could include teams like the Ravens, Chargers, Raiders and Patriots. In fact, earlier reports have indicated Jones may want to go to New England to play with Cam Newton. Stay tuned.

Falcons | Julio Jones trade/restructure or Grady Jarrett extension/restructure coming    Thu May 20, 02:37 PM

Jeff Schultz, of the Athletic, reports that sources tell him that trading or restucturing the deal of Julio Jones or restructuring or extending Grady Jarrett are the only two options for the Falcons to be able to free up enough cap room to sign their draft picks. Schultz writes that the team hasn't approached Jarrett about a new deal and they prefer not to restructure Jones' contract, so a trade of Jones is "the most logical scenario". He also shared that the selection of Kyle Pitts at #4 was because the team thinks he is special and didn't believe enough in Justin Fields to take him fourth.

Footballguys view: It's time to start thinking about what the values of Calvin Ridley and Kyle Pitts will look like if Jones is traded. Obviously both will go up, although it will take the shine off of Matt Ryan's ceiling in fantasy leagues. Schultz names Baltimore, New England, Indianapolis, New England, and San Francisco as possible destinations, adding that Tennessee could show interest but is near the cap ceiling.

Falcons | Julio Jones still a trade candidate    Thu May 20, 01:25 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones remains on trading block, but the team is having trouble finding a partner. One of the primary hurdles is Jones' $15.3 million guaranteed salary in 2021, which the Falcons likely would have to pay a portion of if Jones is dealt.

Footballguys view: Of all of the options available to open up the necessary cap room to get their draft picks signed, trading Jones is the most attractive in terms of the team's future direction and goals. If they do get a trade done, the compensation will probably be less than fans of the team expect.

Falcons | Jack Batho waived    Thu May 20, 01:13 PM

Atlanta Falcons OT Jack Batho on Thursday, May 20, was waived by the team.

Footballguys view: Batho is a product of the South Dakota School of Mines so he's more of an unknown than a typical UDFA. He has battled injuries and hasn't been able to concentrate on football as much as players from the big programs have. We'll see if he gets a look elsewhere after going undrafted this year.

Falcons | William Sweet lands on his feet in Atlanta    Wed May 19, 04:40 PM

Free-agent OT William Sweet (Cowboys) was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Sweet went undrafted in 2019 and has spent some time on a few rosters before landing on the Cowboys practice squad last year. He will have trouble making the Falcons roster because they drafted Jalen Mayfield in the third round this year and he should take up any developmental roster spot for offensive line that the Falcons want to reserve for a player who may not be active on game days.
