Vikings | Desmond Ridder signed to 53-man roster Tue Sep 16, 04:02 PM
Free-agent QB Desmond Ridder (Bengals) was signed by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Footballguys view: By signing Ridder to the 53-man roster, not the practice squad, the Vikings gain flexibility to potentially have an experienced starter as QB2, rather than press an undrafted rookie, Max Brosmer, into action if something happens to Carson Wentz while a high-ankle sprain sidelines J.J. McCarthy. |
Free-agent WR Malik Cunningham (Ravens) was signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Brett Rypien was signed off the practice squad on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (turf toe) was placed on injured reserve by the team on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Footballguys view: The move was expected after the turf toe injury Burrow suffered in Sunday's win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Monday, head coach Zac Taylor confirmed that Burrow will need surgery. The expectation is that Burrow will be out for a minimum of three months. Jake Browning will move into the starting lineup to replace Burrow. Brett Rypien was elevated from the practice squad to serve as Browning's backup. The team added quarterbacks Mike White and Sean Clifford to the practice squad. |

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts' lack of running plays or zone reads has been because of game flow or because of how they were defended, according to offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. 'Don't worry, they're coming,' Patullo said.
Footballguys view: Hurts indirectly defended Patullo after the Week 2 win over the Chiefs by asking a pair of rhetorical questions: "Who knows who they are in Week 2? Who knows who they are in Week 1?" It's a fair point. We're early in the season, and Patullo is a first-year playcaller. Of course, all of this would be much less concerning to fantasy investors if Hurts weren't currently sitting as QB26. We'll continue to watch for the offense to come into focus as we get through September while acknowledging it's hard to sit Hurts as the Eagles sort through their issues. |

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is expected to miss two to four weeks with a high-ankle sprain. ESPN insider Adam Schefter suggests that the Oct. 19 home game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6 is a plausible return date.
Footballguys view: Carson Wentz is expected to start on Sunday against the Bengals. After that, the Vikings are scheduled to play against the Steelers in Dublin in Week 4. In Week 5, they face the Browns in London. One question is whether the Vikings will want McCarthy to travel overseas. As NFL Network's Tom Pelissero suggested, what you don't want to do with a high ankle sprain is get on an eight-hour flight that's going to cause swelling. So, missing the three-game stretch outlined makes a lot of sense. We'll continue to follow up. |
Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Justin Fields (concussion) would need to practice no later than Thursday, Sept. 18, in order for head coach Aaron Glenn to be comfortable starting him in Week 3.
Footballguys view: This was Fields' first documented concussion in the NFL, though he did have one at Ohio State. The NFL has a five-step protocol for concussions, and an independent neurologist must clear the player before returning to action. Tyrod Taylor, who missed the entire preseason due to arthroscopic knee surgery, has 58 career starts, but he hasn't started a game since 2023 with the New York Giants. He rode the Jets' bench last season, behind Aaron Rodgers, appearing only in mop-up situations. We'll be following Fields' progress closely in the coming days. |

Free-agent QB Mike White (Bills) and QB Sean Clifford (Packers) signed with the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Footballguys view: The moves come in the wake of Joe Burrow's turf toe injury. Burrow is expected to miss at least three months. Jake Browning will replace Burrow as the starter, while Brett Rypien, who was signed on Aug. 27, is also on Cincinnati's practice squad. The Bengals typically carry two quarterbacks on the 53-player active roster while having another quarterback on their 16-player practice squad. "To me, you have to have three guys who are healthy and available to play," offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher said Monday. Hopefully, the Bengals can avoid dipping into their newly-signed reserves. |
Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith completed 24 of 43 passes for 180 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions in a 20-9 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Smith, who was sacked three times, also ran for 20 yards on five carries.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com suggested, Smith likely played his worst game since resurrecting his career with Pete Carroll in Seattle, throwing three picks and completing 24 of 43 passes for just 180 yards and a grimacing 37.0 passer rating. According to ESPN.com's Ryan McFadden, the QB was 0-for-12 on pass attempts for 10-plus air yards. That's a big difference from his performance against the New England Patriots in the season opener, when he went 9-for-14 on attempts for more than 10 yards. Smith and the Raiders will look to get back on track against the Commanders in Week 3. |

Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert connected on 19 of his 27 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Herbert also ran nine times for a team-high 31 yards.
Footballguys view: Herbert has been excellent this season. He tossed a pair of touchdowns on Monday -- one to Keenan Allen and a 60-yarder to Quentin Johnston, for five in two games with no interceptions. Failing to salt away a win in the fourth quarter on three fruitless drives that added up to 11 plays for 29 yards and a lost fumble is troubling. Still, though, Herbert is playing arguably the best ball of his career and flourishing in a second year with offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Herbert is QB4 through two games. |

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud completed 13 of 24 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown in a Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stroud added 27 yards on four rushes.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com noted, Stroud's accuracy was unquestionably an issue Monday night, but so was his lack of time in the pocket. Too often, Tampa Bay would dial up even the simplest of blitzes and earn quick pressures. It's entirely understandable that Stroud would struggle with accuracy under consistent pressure, but the real damage is done when the quarterback begins to miss throws when free from pressure. That is what happened far too often Monday night, a concerning sign for this offense even after just two weeks. We'll look for signs of improvement against the Jaguars in Week 3. |

Updating previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list because of his ankle injury, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: While the expectation isn't an IR stay, the team doesn't have an exact timeline for McCarthy's return yet. They'll see how he responds to treatment this week. "Hearing from our medical staff, it's one of those things that tends to be much worse today than it probably was in the moment for him, with adrenaline and everything," O'Connell said. The reported timeline is two to four weeks. Carson Wentz will start in McCarthy's absence. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield completed 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns against the Houston Texans in Week 2. Mayfield, who was sacked four times, had three rushing attempts for 33 yards.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (nose) was not on the injury report Monday, Sept. 15, and will be ready to play in Week 3.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to play in the Week 3 game because of a sprained ankle, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: The injury is not expected to be long-term, but it means Carson Wentz is Minnesota's likely starter for Week 3 against the Bengals. McCarthy played most of Sunday's game behind a patchwork offensive line after center Ryan Kelly and left tackle Justin Skule left Sunday's game early because of concussions, so that's worth watching as well. Wentz got starts with the Rams and Chiefs in Week 18 the last two years, with starters resting. Sunday, if McCarthy is out, will be Wentz's first start with a team at full strength since 2022 with the Commanders. |
San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones was 7-for-12 for 121 yards, three touchdowns and no INTs with a 132.3 passer rating on third down in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: To be fair, Jones was effective throughout. In particular, his ability to play the roll-out game fits well in Shanahan's system. Jones targeted the intermediate level of the field (10-19 air yards) on 35.9 percent of his attempts, his highest rate in a game since 2021. He completed 9 of 14 attempts when targeting the intermediate area for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Sunday marked only the second time in Jones' career he's thrown for 250-plus yards and three TDs (once in 2023). It wasn't all perfect, but Jones gives the 49ers a viable option when Brock Purdy can't go. |

New York Jets QB Justin Fields (concussion) is in the concussion protocol and out of practice Monday, Sept. 15. He will have to practice in order to play in Week 3, head coach Aaron Glenn said. QB Tyrod Taylor is being prepared to start this week in case he is needed.
Footballguys view: Coach Aaron Glenn said Fields will continue to be evaluated. As previously noted, if Fields is unable to play Sunday at Tampa Bay, veteran backup Tyrod Taylor would start for New York. The Jets' next practice is Wednesday, and Glenn acknowledged Fields would need to be cleared from the concussion protocol and get in some time on the field if he's going to play against the Buccaneers. |

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (toe) will require surgery on his turf toe injury and miss a minimum of three months.
Footballguys view: Burrow was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday's 31-27 win over the Jaguars. Backup Jake Browning has proven capable in the past. On Sunday, he was 21-of-32 passing for 241 yards, with three total touchdowns (and three interceptions). Adding optimism for fantasy investors, Ja'Marr Chase came through with 14 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown, and Tee Higgins broke free on a 42-yard score in the third quarter with Browning at the helm. The hope is that Browning can continue to drive and keep their values high over the next three months, and possibly more. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy completed 11-of-21 passes for 158 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, while running five times for 25 yards.
Footballguys view: Six days after he erased three quarters of futility with three touchdowns in one quarter to lead the Vikings past the Bears, McCarthy had nothing to offer in this one. In the first half, he fumbled twice (both recovered by Minnesota), threw an interception, was sacked five times, and was pressured 11 times. While the Vikings' protection has to improve, so too does McCarthy's decision-making, accuracy, and overall play. He had an off-target rate of 24 percent; the league average in 2024 was 15 percent. McCarthy and the Vikings will try to regroup for Sunday's game against the Bengals. |
Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young completed 35-of-55 passes for a career-high 328 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. He also ran twice for two yards, while he lost a fumble.
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's David Newton notes, Young looked dreadful in the first quarter, committing two turnovers to give him five in his first five quarters this season. Then, in the second half, it all started to click. Young remained calm and steady, finishing with a career-high 328 passing yards and three touchdowns. Tetairoa McMillan posted six receptions for a game-high 100 yards, while Hunter Renfrow (2) and Chuba Hubbard had touchdown catches. The near comeback should provide some patience for Canales and Young. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones topped 300 yards passing for the first time since 2023, completing 23 of his 34 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown in a 29-28 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 2. He also ran for a touchdown.
Footballguys view: Jones' skeptics were eager to see how he might handle the test presented by the Broncos' defense after he carved up Miami's unit in Week 1, and he thrived for a second straight week. Jones operated the Colts' attack comfortably, while avoiding major mistakes. As NFL.com suggested, we're starting to see why Shane Steichen chose Jones as his starter during the preseason. Steichen kept the pressure off Jones with a balanced approach, which leaned on Jonathan Taylor and his ever-present big-play threat. If Indianapolis can maintain this level of balance throughout the season, Jones could prove to be consistently effective. |

Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. completed 13-of-21 passes for 135 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, while running once for minus-1 yard.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 16 of his 29 passes for 187 yards, a touchdown and an interception and ran seven times for 66 yards and a score in a 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray completed 17-of-25 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, while adding seven rushes for 32 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts completed 15 of his 22 passes for 101 yards and added nine carries for 15 yards and a touchdown in a 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa completed 26-of-32 passes for 315 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 2 against the New England Patriots.
Footballguys view: After an abysmal performance last week, Tagovailoa threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns and looked more in sync with receivers Tyreek Hill (six catches, 109 yards) and Jaylen Waddle (five catches, 68 yards, TD). But Tagovailoa also badly overthrew a pass to Hill on Miami's potential go-ahead drive, was sacked on third down, and threw his third interception of the season on fourth down. It was an improvement over last week, but he faces a challenge against the Bills in Week 3. |

Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix completed 22 of his 30 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, and added 20 rushing yards in a 29-28 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2. He also threw one interception.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints QB Spencer Rattler completed 25 of his 34 passes for 207 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in a 26-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2. He added 14 rushing yards.
Link to storyNew England Patriots QB Drake Maye completed 19-of-23 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins, while running 10 times for 31 yards and a score.
Footballguys view: It was the performance fantasy investors needed after a disappointing Week 1. Maye became the first Patriots quarterback with multiple passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in the same game since Tom Brady in Week 2, 2019. His 26.3 fantasy points were the third-most by a quarterback on Sunday's slate. The Patriots play the Steelers at home in Week 3. |
San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones completed 26 of his 39 passes for 279 yards and tied a career high with three touchdown passes. He also lost a fumble.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com noted, Jones missed his first four passes, but the fifth-year pro settled in, hitting eight straight at one point and effectively running the offense. Jones put balls on the money, including hitting Jauan Jennings in stride for a 42-yard touchdown. Despite having Christian McCaffrey at full speed, the Niners called 39 passes for Jones. Sunday marked only the second time in the QB's career he's thrown for 250-plus yards and three TDs (once in 2023). While Brock Purdy isn't ruled out for Week 3, Jones showed he can keep the offense afloat as long as needed. |

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (toe) is believed to have turf toe, as well as torn ligaments, a source said Sunday, Sept. 14. He is likely to miss several weeks as a result.
Footballguys view: Burrow had an MRI during the game, and while head coach Zac Taylor offered no updates, the Bengals surely know by now the extent of their quarterback's left toe injury. Reporters saw Burrow leave the locker room with a boot on his left foot and on crutches. The report adds that a multi-week absence is likely. Footballguys injury analyst Adam Hutchison added to that, suggesting a stint on IR is possible. While Burrow's injury is horrible news, having a competent backup in Jake Browning is a positive. We'll follow up as developments warrant. |

Tennessee Titans QB Cam Ward completed 19-of-33 passes for 175 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, while running four times for eight yards with one lost fumble.
Link to storyLos Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 23-of-33 passes for 298 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, and he ran twice for minus-6 yards.
Footballguys view: Stafford had a strong game even though his offensive guard duo is banged up and the Titans best defender is a defensive tackle. He got Davante Adams more involved today and showed he can be playable as a QB2/Superflex in the right matchup. Next week vs. the defending champion Eagles is probably not that matchup. |
Matthew Stafford player page
Cincinnati Bengals QB Jake Browning completed 21-of-32 passes for 241 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking over for the injured QB Joe Burrow (toe). He also ran once for a 1-yard touchdown.
Footballguys view: Browning will be a top priority on superflex waiver wires, but he's a boom/bust play in 1QB leagues, with a tough matchup against the Vikings next week. He showed he can support Ja'Marr Chase's value, but Browning also had multiple poor decisions that resulted in interceptions and will need to tighten up his play in Week 3. |

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott finished 38-of-52 for 361 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in Week 2 versus the New York Giants. Prescott also added 17 yards rushing on three attempts.
Footballguys view: Prescott didn't really start clicking with his receivers until the second quarter, but more than made up for lost time in the instant classic 40-37 overtime win. He'll face a Bears defense next week that just gave up a fiftyburger to the Lions in Week 2, so he's a solid fantasy QB1 for Week 3. |
Dak Prescott player page
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence completed 24-of-42 passes for 271 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He also ran twice for four yards while recovering his own fumble.
Footballguys view: Lawrence had a good fantasy game against the abysmal Bengals defense, but he still made mistakes and seemed out of synch with his receivers at times. He's going to face a much tougher Texans defense next week and shouldn't be in fantasy lineups. The Jaguars passing game is going to remain a work in progress. |
Trevor Lawrence player page
Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff went 23-for-28 for 334 yards and five touchdowns against the Chicago Bears in Week 2.
Footballguys view: How good is the Packers defense to shut down Goff and the Lions passing game in Week 1? The Lions didn't seem to miss Ben Johnson at all in the first game against their old offensive coordinator. Goff remains a matchup QB1 who is better indoors, but the scoring potential of next week's game against the Ravens may incline you to put him in your lineup even though the game is outdoors. |
Jared Goff player page
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson completed 19-of-29 passes for 225 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns, while adding 13 rushing yards on a pair of attempts.
Footballguys view: The Browns shut down Derrick Henry, but had no answers for Jackson and the Ravens passing game. The line gave Jackson to look downfield with patience and pick his targets, turning the passing game into an exhibition for the Ravens. Jackson will face the Lions in a potential shootout next week. |
Lamar Jackson player page
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams went 19-for-30 for 207 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Detroit Lions in Week 2. He also rushed for 27 yards on five carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Williams was a better passer than he was in Week 1, but he didn't add as much as a runner, and wasn't quite a fantasy QB1 this week. He'll face a Cowboys secondary that just gave up 450 yards to Russell Wilson - a career high - and should be a consideration as a Week 3 streamer. |
New York Giants QB Russell Wilson finished 30-of-41 for 450 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson also ran for 23 yards on three carries.
Footballguys view: Wilson had a career high in yards and beat the Cowboys on deep balls - including a long touchdown to Malik Nabers with under a minute left to take the lead. The talk of benching the veteran for Jaxson Dart should go away for at least a few weeks. He and the Giants will face a tougher defense when the Chiefs come to New Jersey next week. |
Russell Wilson player page
New York Jets QB Justin Fields (head) went 3-for-11 for 27 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 before leaving the game to be evaluated for a concussion. He also rushed for 49 yards on five carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Fields did not at all look like the more confident, aware, and resourceful passer he was in Week 1 against Pittsburgh. The injury made it sting even more if you trusted him in your lineup, but the bigger concern is that the Week 1 result was more about the Steelers pass defense than Fields turning the corner in his development. |
Justin Fields player page
New York Jets QB Tyrod Taylor went 7-for-11 for 56 yards and one touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 after replacing QB Justin Fields (head). He also rushed for 21 yards on three carries during the game.
Footballguys view: We'll see if Fields can get cleared in time to face Tampa next week. If not, Taylor will be streamable with his running ability that the likelihood that the Jets have to pass to move the ball against the Bucs stout defensive front that shut down the Falcons running game in Week 1. |
Tyrod Taylor player page
Cleveland Browns QB Dillon Gabriel completed 3-of-3 passes for 20 yards, his first NFL touchdown and no interceptions in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens in mop-up duty.
Link to storyCleveland Browns QB Joe Flacco completed 25-of-45 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, and he ran once for eight yards.
Footballguys view: Flacco's numbers took a hit from his Week 1 output vs. Cincinnati, and a good amount of it came when the game was out of hand. Dillon Gabriel replaced him in the fourth quarter. With Green Bay, Minnesota, and Detroit up the next three weeks, it's fair to wonder if Gabriel would start if the Browns fall to 0-5. |
Joe Flacco player page
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers completed 18-of-33 passes for 203 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. His TD to WR DK Metcalf was the 508th of his career, tying former teammate QB Brett Favre for fourth place all-time in the NFL in passing touchdowns.
Footballguys view: Rodgers and the Arthur Smith playbook was not working against a very good Seattle defense. The Patriots allowed Tua Tagovailoa to get right in Week 2 and that's who Pittsburgh faces in Week 3. Rodgers and the Steelers passing game has a decent chance to improve next Sunday. |
Aaron Rodgers player page
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen went 14-for-25 for 148 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions against the New York Jets in Week 2. He also rushed for 59 yards on six carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Allen suffered a bloody nose early in the game, and the Bills didn't need to take many risks with the ball in the passing game to easily beat the Jets. This week's fantasy output from Allen hurts as much as last week's massive game helps. Average them out and he's still one of the highest scoring fantasy quarterbacks so far this season. Allen will face the woeful Dolphins defense on Thursday in what should be a bounceback game for fantasy. |
