Saints | Jameis Winston struggles in Week 2    Sun Sep 19, 05:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston went 11-for-22 for 111 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions against the Carolina Panthers in Week 2. He also rushed for 19 yards and one touchdown on three carries.

Footballguys view: Taysom Hill watch is on. The Saints were without their starting center, Erik McCoy, and couldn't get anything going in either aspect of the game. Bill Belichick and the Patriots are up in an ominous sign for the Saints offense. The Packers must have really phoned it in last week.

Saints | Jameis Winston the starter    Fri Aug 27, 09:15 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston was named the starting quarterback Friday, Aug. 27.

Footballguys view: This was expected and a much better outcome for the entire passing game. Alvin Kamara teams can breathe a sigh of relief and Marquez Callaway and Michael Thomas gain some upside with Winston rising to the occasion to win the job. He's worth a late round pick in leagues of all formats.

Saints | Jameis Winston emerging    Wed Aug 25, 08:21 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston has become the favorite to start for the Saints, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Winston is competing with Taysom Hill to be the starter for the Saints. He's got the experience as a starter and Hill is more of a gadget quarterback no matter how much the Saints want him to be more. If/when Winston is named the starter, we'd imagine the team still uses Hill in a manner they did when Drew Brees was the main man. If Winston is the starter, we'll see if he can be safer with the ball and hold onto the job.

Saints | Jameis Winston to start Monday    Sat Aug 21, 12:37 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston will get the start Monday, Aug. 23, in the team' second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, head coach Sean Payton announced Friday.

Footballguys view: The Saints are going through a quarterback competition right now. Winston has much more starting experience, but he has not been named the starter yet. Having a strong performance on Monday could help make the team's decision. Payton said it's part of a planned rotation after QB Taysom Hill started the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

Saints | Mixed results for Jameis Winston    Sat Aug 14, 10:27 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston completed seven of his 12 passes for 96 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 17-14 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens Saturday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: Winston was just a little off on a throw to LilJordan Humphrey, and admitted his mistake. Taysom Hill also threw an interception, so it was a draw in the Saints quarterback battle through one week.

Saints | Drew Brees thinks NO could play both QBs    Mon Jul 19, 03:06 PM

New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will be competing for the starting quarterback job during training camp, but retired QB Drew Brees said he believes both could see playing time no matter which one is named the starter. ' Whatever happens, in terms of whoever is the starter, I do think there is a scenario where both of them are playing. If Jameis is the starter I think Taysom is seeing a lot of action at quarterback, maybe even moreso than he did with me,' Brees said.

Saints | QBs Winston/Hill Will 'Rise to the Challenge' per Payton    Mon Jul 12, 01:04 PM

In a recent interview on NFL Network's "Total Access" Saints head coach Sean Payton addressed the quarterback competition between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. "Obviously, there's a high bar for our team. ... And I think both of those guys will rise to the challenge. They both understand the importance of the reps that we're going to have in this upcoming training camp. And there is a little bit of a standard and it's kind of high, and so that's OK." Payton said.

Footballguys view: This quarterback situation is one to watch in training camp. Winston has to be the frontrunner because of his starting experience. Hill has started a handful of games, but he's not the developed passer that Winston is. Now, Winston needs to take care of the football better but we're expecting Payton to scheme something for that. If Winston wins the job, he could have a short leash if Hill impresses in camp. With Hill in the lineup as the starter, the offense would have a different look.

Saints | Jameis Winston to adjust style?    Sat Jul 3, 11:33 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston led the NFL with a 10.8 average depth of target during his five years as the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and during the same stretch, the Saints ranked dead last as a team in average depth of target.

Footballguys view: There's going to be an adjustment from Winston, but there will be an adjustment from Sean Payton. The two sides will work together to build a system that fits both Winston's style while also cutting down on the turnovers. That should come with more efficient passes, working the short-to-intermediate routes to then take some shots downfield. It will be fewer shots 20 yards or more than we're used to seeing from Winston but that's the compromise that could make Winston a strong starter for the Saints.

Saints | Tre'Quan Smith has been working out with QB    Sun Jun 20, 02:23 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Tre'Quan Smith has been working out with QB Jameis Winston on a regular basis this offseason.

Footballguys view: Smith will start and have a chance to set career highs during his contract year. If Taysom Hill wins the starting job, that's a hit for Smith's fantasy value, but most favor Winston over Hill in competition to some degree.

Saints | Jameis Winston positioned to start in 2021?    Tue Mar 23, 03:31 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston seems to 'have the leg up' over Taysom Hill to be the team's starting quarterback in 2021, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Winston may have the leg up over Hill because he's got more experience. Hill started last year when Drew Brees was banged up but is still limited as a passer. Winston went 30-for-30 in 2019 as the Buccaneers starter and obviously needs to cut down on turnovers/interceptions if he wins the starting job with the Saints.

Saints | Open QB competition with Saints    Tue Mar 16, 12:37 PM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QBs Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston will compete for the starting position in training camp, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: When Drew Brees went down with injury last year, Winston took over as the main quarterback - in that game. After that, the Saints had Hill as their starter with mixed results. Winston returns to the Saints with the chance to win the job in training camp. We think that's what happens as Hill looks better as a gadget quarterback than he does a starter.

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston was reportedly in play for the Chicago Bears before agreeing to a one-year contract with the Saints on Monday, March 15.

Impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Saints) agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $12 million to return to the New Orleans Saints on Monday, March 15.

Footballguys view: The move makes sense for both sides. With Drew Brees retiring, the Saints needed a starter and Winston was there last year learning the ropes from Brees. They still have Taysom Hill to work as a gadget quarterback from time to time but Winston should be the starter.

Saints | Jameis Winston interested in returning to NO    Sun Feb 7, 03:14 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston is interested in re-signing with the Saints this offseason. Winston likely would be the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job if he re-signs with the team.

Footballguys view: We'll see what kind of price these two sides can find. Winston could stay with the Saints to compete with Taysom Hill for the starting job in 2021. We're expected to hear that Drew Brees has officially retired in the near future.

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston will compete for the starting quarterback job next season if he re-signs with the Saints and QB Drew Brees retires, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Saints | NO hoping to retain Jameis Winston     Sat Jan 16, 01:13 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston is an unrestricted free agent after this season, but the Saints like what they've seen of him, according to a report Saturday, Jan. 16, and want to bring him back with the possibility that QB Drew Brees could retire this offseason.

Footballguys view: Winston did not start when the Saints lost Brees for a few games. Instead, Taysom Hill was the team's starter and Winston was his backup. We'll see if he wants to stay with the team or if another team gives him a clearer shot to be a starter in 2021.

One reason why the New Orleans Saints decided to have QB Taysom Hill start over QB Jameis Winston for Week 11's game against the Atlanta Falcons is that head coach Sean Payton is curious if Hill would be a viable long-term solution under center for the organization. New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton declined to announce Monday, Nov. 16, whether he intends to start Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill in place of the injured Drew Brees in Week 11 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Footballguys view: Winston was ...well, Winston-like filling in for an injured Brees in Week 10. He's got more experience and would likely be the starter with Brees out of action for the foreseeable future. However, Hill might get the shot or at least get more snaps as a quarterback with Brees out.

Saints | Taysom Hill to remain a specialist?    Sat Jun 13, 09:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will continue to play multiple position even if QB Drew Brees misses time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic, and Holder believes QB Jameis Winston will take over the traditional backup role that Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater filled last year.

Footballguys view: Hill did catch six touchdowns last year and he seems to perk up the offense when he gets on the field, so keeping him in this role is smart, but it doesn't necessarily have to preclude the team from having him serve as the backup. They would need to carry a third quarterback anyway in case Hill gets hurt, but it is surprising that a player expected to take over at quarterback next year isn't trusted to be a backup this year.

Saints | Jameis Winston the likely backup    Sat Jun 13, 09:16 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston will serve as the backup quarterback and start if QB Drew Brees were to miss time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: It continues to seem odd that the Saints would give Taysom Hill a two-year, $21 million extension and trumpet him as the quarterback of the future while not being willing to make him the backup of the present. Winston would obviously be a better option for the passing game if Brees misses time, so this is good news for Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Jared Cook, and Alvin Kamara.

Saints | Jameis Winston staying confident    Tue Jun 9, 04:22 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston said he still believes in himself after going from a starter in 2019 to competing for a backup job with the Saints in 2020. 'I know what I'm worth,' Winston said. 'And I know day in and day out, without publicly coming in and saying it, that historically I'm one of the best quarterbacks to play the game.' Winston went on to say he's eager to work his way back up to a starting role.

Footballguys view: Winston is not clearly the backup to Drew Brees. The former no.1 overall pick will have to compete in training camp with Taysom Hill to be the backup. Winston had over 5,000 yards passing last year but shouldn't see the field too much this year unless Brees gets banged up.

Saints | New Orleans to hold competition for backup job    Thu May 21, 06:40 PM

New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will have to compete and beat out the competition to back up QB Drew Brees in 2020, according to head coach Sean Payton Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: The word is Hill is going to get more playing time this year, even if that's as a gadget/third-string quarterback. Winston has all the starting experience and is the better passer, so we're expecting him to win the primary backup job behind Brees.

Saints | Jameis Winston terms    Wed Apr 29, 10:46 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston's one-year deal has a $952,000 base salary and a $148,000 signing bonus. He can earn $1.76 million in playing time incentives, $1.8 million in playoff playing time incentives and $40,000 Pro Bowl incentives. The deal is worth a base of $1.1 million with the potential for $4.7 million with incentives.

Footballguys view: Winston has one year to prove himself behind the scenes. He won't start unless there's an injury to Drew Brees. In fact, we could see Taysom Hill get more snaps than Winston in 2020. Hill was set for a larger role this season anyway, and that could include some time at quarterback.

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New Orleans on Tuesday, April 28. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: This deal was coming down for some time and now it's officially official. Winston will serve as a veteran backup behind Drew Brees who won't see the field unless there's an injury. We'll see if he can impress enough behind the scenes to earn the job as the next starter for the team when Brees retires.

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) is reportedly close to agreeing to terms with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year contract, according to Yahoo! Sports Charles Robinson.

Footballguys view: The Saints had Teddy Bridgewater as a backup to Drew Brees last year and they needed him when Brees was banged up. Winston would serve a similar role with plenty of starting experience. Taysom Hill would then continue as a gadget quarterback for the Saints in 2020.

Buccaneers | GM praises Jameis Winston    Thu Apr 9, 08:54 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Thursday, April 9, he still believes in free-agent QB Jameis Winston. 'We've got a lot of respect for him,' Licht said. 'I thought he did a lot of great things, and anybody in our office or building would say the same thing. He did some spectacular things for us. I would never say that, personally -- and I think I speak on behalf of the organization -- that he's a bust. I think he's got a bright future ahead of him.'

Footballguys view: Winston is still waiting for a shot with a new team. Several teams could be suitors but there has been little buzz about who that would actually be. Winston could compete for a starting job with a team like the Chargers, but we think it would be interesting if he became a high-value backup on a team like the Steelers. Stay tuned.

Footballguys view: Who knows what direction the Bucs will go in at the quarterback position. It seems like they may franchise tag LB Shaq Barrett and let Winston walk in free agency.   Buccaneers | Jameis Winston decision in limbo until free agency    Thu Feb 13, 05:20 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is expected to remain an option for the team for the 2020 season at least until the beginning of the legal three-day free-agent tampering period March 16-18, according to head coach Bruce Arians Thursday, Feb. 13. 'Really nothing has changed,' Arians said. 'What's Door No. 2? You know? Can we make the one we have better? All those things you go through right now. ... And then, that's the problem, you get about three days to decide. The legal tampering period. Is somebody going to get let go? What's the trade values? It's really monotonous right now because you don't have any answers.'

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers are free to negotiate with Winston right now but they are choosing not to do so. Instead, they will see what becomes realistic in free agency (Philip Rivers?) and then make a decision on Winston's future. Most have the Bucs going in a different direction at quarterback in the 2020 season.

Winston is set to be a free agent and there's no guarantee that the Bucs are going to have him back...especially with Philip Rivers available. We'll see if Winston sticks with the Bucs or goes somewhere else for the 2020 season...and we'll see if this surgery helps him throw fewer interceptions.

Buccaneers | Ex-GM: No tag for Jameis Winston     Sat Jan 25, 01:18 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is coming off an up-and-down season in which he hit career highs in yards (5,109) and touchdowns (33) but also interceptions (30), including seven pick-sixes, and former Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said it's time the Bucs and Winston part ways. 'I would be surprised if they pay him,' Dominik told PewterReport.com. 'Maybe they will. It's their decision, but I would be shocked if the Bucs franchised Winston -- or transitioned him. I think the decision they have is certainly difficult because there has been some production there, but I don't know how you could justify paying Jameis Winston more money this year than he made last year.'

Footballguys view: Winston played on the fifth-year option in 2019 and had a tumultuous season. Bucs head coach Bruce Arians has to love Winston's ability to go downfield but the turnover problem is just too much. With so many quarterback options this offseason in free agency, trades and the draft it clouds any future Winston could have in Tampa. Winston showed toughness and finished the year as the NFL's passing leader with 5,109 passing yards.
