Rams | No surgery for Matthew Stafford Mon Feb 2, 01:10 PM
Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) will not need to undergo surgery this offseason to repair a herniated disc in his back, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: Stafford entered the 2025 season with the back injury but started in all 20 games. He was also very productive. He led the NFL with 46 touchdown passes and 4,707 passing yards this year, at one point throwing a record 28 touchdown passes between interceptions. McVay told reporters during his end-of-season press conference Monday that while he hopes Stafford will return, he doesn't have an answer yet. Stafford has a $40 million salary that becomes guaranteed on the fifth day of the new league year, which puts a soft deadline around the middle of March. We'll be watching for more.

Sean McVay's future with the Rams is secure after Monday's announcement that he's signed a multi-year contract extension with the team, but quarterback Matthew Stafford's plans are less certain. On Monday, McVay said the team will give Stafford that time while making it clear that the hope is that he's running the Rams' offense again this fall. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed like you guys that he still wants to go play," McVay said, via Greg Beachem of the Associated Press.
Footballguys view: Stafford said after the Rams' loss to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game that there is a lot that goes into a decision to play an 18th NFL season and that he will "figure all that kind of stuff out with some time." As PFT notes, there's no timetable in place for Stafford to make his decision, but the sooner the Rams know whether they need to find a new quarterback, the better for their overall planning for next season.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford plans to return for his 18th NFL season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who reports that Stafford has told people close to him that he believes he has 'good football left.'
Footballguys view: Immediately after the Rams' 31-27 loss to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game, Stafford wouldn't discuss next season. "I can't generalize six months of my life 10 minutes after a loss," he said. But a return makes sense. Stafford, a finalist for this year's NFL MVP award, is coming off the best season of his career, finishing the regular season as the odds-on favorite to be named MVP after leading the league in passing yards (4,707) and passing touchdowns (46). We'll watch for more on this, but it could take some time for an official answer.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 22 of his 35 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns and gained 16 rushing yards on two carries in a 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. RB Blake Corum gained a team-high 55 rushing yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 24 yards, and RB Kyren Williams rushed 10 times for 39 yards and had two receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown. WR Puka Nacua was open early and often, catching nine passes for 165 yards and a touchdown, and WR Davante Adams hauled in four passes for 89 yards and a score. TE Colby Parkinson finished with 62 receiving yards on three receptions, and TE Tyler Higbee caught his only target for 12 yards. LB Omar Speights recorded a team-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops, and S Kamren Kinchens, DE Jared Verse and DL Braden Fiske all recorded a sack.
Footballguys view: The Rams outgained the Seahawks 479 to 396, but Seattle was 4-of-5 in the red zone and had the only takeaway. The Rams were only 1-for-8 on third down. Stafford, who is a finalist for NFL MVP, threw a 9-yard touchdown to Williams, a 2-yarder to Davante Adams, and a 34-yarder to Nacua, who was named a finalist for the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award. Beyond that, even if head coach Sean McVay loses an assistant or two in the current hiring cycle, the Rams are well-positioned for continued success in 2026.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 20 of his 42 passes for 258 yards in a 20-17 overtime win over the Chicago Bears in the Divisional Round. RB Kyren Williams rushed for a team-high 87 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and added four grabs four 30 yards. RB Blake Corum was held in check, finishing with six carries for 19 yards. WR Puka Nacua and TE Colby Parkinson tied for the team lead with 56 receiving yards. Parkinson caught three passes, and Nacua had five receptions to go along with two carries for six yards. Davante Adams was limited to two catches for 24 yards, and TE Tyler Higbee had just one catch for 27 yards. WR Jordan Whittington finished with two receptions for 35 yards. S Kamren Curl turned in a standout performance, logging a team-high 13 tackles, including seven solo stops, and an interception. LB Nathan Landman finished with 10 tackles, including five solo stops, and CB Cobie Durant had two tackles, three passes defensed and a pair of interceptions.
Footballguys view: The Rams' offense -- a unit that led the league in offensive DVOA during the regular season -- struggled for much of their 20-17 divisional-round win against the Chicago Bears. Through three quarters, the Rams had 174 yards, their fewest of the season, according to ESPN Research. But the Rams' defense stepped up when they needed to most, with safety Kam Curl intercepting a Caleb Williams pass in overtime to give Los Angeles the ball back at their 22-yard line. While not a pretty game for the Rams, it was enough to send them to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since they won Super Bowl LVI during the 2021 season. Now get ready for Rams vs. Seahawks Part III.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (finger) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 16, and is not on the injury report for the Divisional Round playoff game.
Footballguys view: Stafford picked up a sprained finger in last week's win, but he'll be a full go in a blustery road game against the Bears. His finger and the expected weather should temper expectations, but Stafford's multi-touchdown upside always makes him viable in fantasy.

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (finger) suffered a sprained finger in the Wild Card Round but will be good to go for the Divisional Round, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: Stafford had a finger on his right throwing hand bent backward late in the first half of Saturday's win over the Panthers, but he was still able to finish the game. According to USA Today, Stafford's biggest hurdle heading into this divisional game is the Chicago weather, where early forecasts call for a high of 16 degrees and a low of two degrees. The wind chill will make it feel closer to -8 degrees. We'll monitor the finger throughout the week.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (finger) sustained a minor finger injury during the Wild Card game versus the Carolina Panthers Saturday, Jan. 10, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Although Stafford's finger was bent back, it was not dislocated and X-rays came back negative.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford went 24-for-42 for 304 yards, three touchdowns and one interception against the Carolina Panthers in the Wild Card playoff game. RB Kyren Williams rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries and also caught two passes for 18 yards and one touchdown. RB Blake Corum rushed for 45 yards on 11 carries and caught two passes for 13 yards. WR Puka Nacua caught 10 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown on 18 targets. WR Davante Adams caught five passes for 72 yards on 13 targets. TE Tyler Higbee caught two passes for 45 yards on three targets, while TE Colby Parkinson caught two passes for 34 yards and one touchdown on three targets. S Kamren Curl recorded five solo tackles and 10 total tackles, while LB Nathan Landman posted four solo tackles and 10 total tackles.
Footballguys view: Stafford struggled at times, but he led the team to the win late in the fourth quarter. Nacua and Adams were stars at the wide receiver position, and guys like Higbee and Parkinson made plays when they needed to at tight end. The Rams get this tough win on the road as they continue to march towards a Super Bowl.

Matthew Stafford passed for 259 yards and threw four touchdowns as the Rams rallied to secure the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs with a 37-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Footballguys view: Stafford passed Dan Marino for seventh place on the NFL's career TD passes list while finishing his MVP-caliber season leading the NFL with 4,707 yards passing and 46 TDs -- the second most in league history by a quarterback at least 37 years old. For our purposes, Stafford, who was drafted in the double-digit rounds as QB25 this summer, finished the year as QB3 overall. It's safe to assume his price will rise in 2026.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford tossed two touchdowns in Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons, giving him 42 passing TDs for the season. That's a new franchise record, breaking the old record of 41 TD passes held by Stafford (2021) and QB Kurt Warner (1999), when the organization was located in St. Louis.

Despite being out of contention for the NFC West title, Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay said he would play his starters in Week 18 against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The move is a departure from the past two seasons, when McVay rested quarterback Matthew Stafford and many of Los Angeles' key starters in the final week of the regular season despite seeding still being in play. "Oh, we're playing," McVay said Monday night after the Rams' 27-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. "Yeah, they're playing."
Footballguys view: The Rams would be the No. 5 seed in the NFC if they beat the Cardinals next week and the Seahawks beat the 49ers. Los Angeles would be the No. 6 seed with a loss to Arizona or a San Francisco victory. When asked if he's eager to play Week 18, Stafford said, "Yeah, I love playing the game. So, yeah. I'll be ready to go." Stafford entered Monday night as the odds-on favorite to win MVP at -225, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. After the loss, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye became the favorite at -400 to Stafford at +300.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams (10-3) scored 35 unanswered points to bounce back from last week's turnover-filled loss to Carolina. Los Angeles won for the seventh time in eight games to stay tied with Seattle atop the NFC West, one game ahead of San Francisco.
| Footballguys view: There were MVP chants in the postgame locker room for Stafford, who was taken out of the game early in the fourth quarter. "It's fun," Stafford said of hearing the chants from his teammates. "I don't play the game for that, but it's cool." Stafford had his seventh game of the season with three or more passing touchdowns Sunday (most in the NFL). Stafford was QB4 with 23.2 fantasy points through Sunday's late-afternoon games. Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 18-of-28 passes for 243 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 13 against the Carolina Panthers. The interceptions, both in the first quarter, were his first since Week 3. One of the interceptions was returned for a touchdown, too, and Stafford also lost a fumble.
Footballguys view: Stafford came into the game with two interceptions this season. He threw two in the first half. Stafford was also sacked by Derrick Brown and fumbled with the game on the line late in the fourth quarter. He's still a high floor QB1 against the Cardinals next week, but this results makes you less likely to play him in the rematch with Seattle on the road in Week 16.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 25 of his 35 passes for 273 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in a Week 12 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Footballguys view: Stafford is playing at an MVP level and entered the game as a favorite to win the award for the first time in his 17-year career. On Sunday night, Stafford added to his 2025 résumé. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Stafford has thrown 27 straight passing touchdowns without an interception, the longest streak by any player since play-by-play data was first tracked in 1978. The Rams play the Panthers in Week 13.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 24-of-36 passes for 280 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, while adding three runs for minus-3 yards.
Footballguys view: Stafford is playing some of the best football of his career. On Sunday, he became the first quarterback in NFL history with four passing touchdowns and zero interceptions in three straight games. His four passing touchdowns in three consecutive games leave him tied for the third-longest streak in NFL history. He's the sixth player with a streak that long and is now two shy of Peyton Manning's record. Stafford and the Rams have plenty of momentum heading into their Week 11 game against the Seahawks.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is the fourth different quarterback in NFL history to throw 20-plus touchdowns with two or fewer interceptions through their team's first eight games.
Footballguys view: Stafford is playing like an NFL MVP, and the Rams look set to make a deep postseason run (again). He's carving up defenses on a regular basis, and Fantasy GMs are reaping the rewards. Against the 49ers on Sunday afternoon, we've got Stafford in his normal QB1 ranking for Week 10.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 24-of-32 passes for 281 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, while running four times for minus-4 yards.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com suggested, Stafford got whatever he wanted against the New Orleans defense, playing point guard with aplomb. Seven players had at least two catches and double-digit yards. Although he left early with a minor chest issue, Puka Nacua's return helped open up the offense. Whether it was short tosses to his tight ends or deep shots to Davante Adams, Stafford was on his game from the start. With Stafford and Adams vibing, the Rams' red zone offense can be deadly. Add a smothering defense and an offense in a groove, the 6-2 Rams are a force in the NFC.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford went 21-for-33 for 182 yards and five touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7.
Footballguys view: No Puka Nacua, no problem. Sean McVay took a page out of Arthur Smith's book, running numerous plays with three tight end on the field early in the game. The Rams offense has been efficient in many forms already this season, and Stafford is a big reason why. He has been an elite QB1 play three of the last four weeks, and the only down game was in the wind against the listless Ravens last week. Stafford could end up being an everyweek QB1 for fantasy, especially in 6 pt pass TD leagues. The Jaguars defense has been giving up big numbers through the air over the last month, which will surely be a point of emphasis of the work they do during the bye.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford went 17-for-26 for 181 yards and one touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6.
Footballguys view: It was a windy day in Baltimore and Puka Nacua missed some time with a lower leg injury. On top of that, the Ravens offense continued to be inept and didn't put any pressure on the Rams offense to take chances or otherwise push the envelope on offense. This was a letdown for fantasy considering the matchup, but the weather and game script conspired against fantasy teams that relied on the Rams passing game. Expect a much better performance next week at Jacksonville, where Sam Darnold just completed 16 passes for 295 yards and two scores.
Matthew Stafford player page
Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford faces the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6, and the Ravens are allowing the second-most passing yards per game and have surrendered a league-high 13 touchdown passes.
Footballguys view: As they said on Mad Men, the Ravens defense is "not great Bob!" Stafford is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL, and he's coming off two games where he nearly passed for 400 yards in each (389, 375). The Rams could and should run away with this game as the Ravens are just having a terrible season. A blowout win could mean Stafford's numbers are held in check because he won't need to fill the air with footballs. Expect him to post QB1 numbers, although not as many as he's done over the last two weeks, in Week 6.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 19-of-33 passes for 196 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Footballguys view: Stafford played well in the first half as the Rams built a 26-7, but then got little going until driving the team in position for a potential game-winning field goal... that was blocked and returned for a touchdown. Consider him a high floor/low ceiling streaming option against the Colts next week.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 23-of-33 passes for 298 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, and he ran twice for minus-6 yards.
Footballguys view: Stafford had a strong game even though his offensive guard duo is banged up and the Titans best defender is a defensive tackle. He got Davante Adams more involved today and showed he can be playable as a QB2/Superflex in the right matchup. Next week vs. the defending champion Eagles is probably not that matchup.

Los Angeles Rams WR Matthew Stafford completed 21-of-29 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, and he ran four times for minus-2 yards while recording his own fumble. Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) is expected to play in the Week 1 game, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: After practicing fully all last week without setbacks -- including participating in 11-on-11 drills -- Stafford appears on track. McVay's confidence is evident. Of course, that assurance comes with a caveat: Stafford is managing a lingering back injury, and though he's deemed "ready to play," there's widespread concern about whether he can play well when hit. We'll find out more about that Sunday, when the Rams take on a tough Texans defense.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) fully participated in practice Monday, Aug. 25. Head coach Sean McVay said Stafford is on track to play in Week 1.
Footballguys view: Stafford has been dealing with a disc injury in his back that kept him out of practice for the first few weeks of training camp. He's set to fully participate in practice this week, and McVay told reporters, "There's nothing that would leave me to believe, unless we have an unforeseen setback, that [Stafford's] not going to be ready to roll against the Texans." As long as Stafford is on the field, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams should return value for fantasy investors.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) has been a full participant during practice this week but will not travel with the final preseason game, according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: Good news for Stafford and the Rams here. Back issues are troubling, and Stafford needs a bit of time to shake off the rust. He wasn't going to play in the preseason finale even if he was healthy, so that's not really a big news item. However, it is good to see a full participation level as the team gets ready for Week 1. Stafford is a QB2 for Fantasy GMs out there.

Los Angles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) has been a full participant in practice this week and appears to showing no ill effects from the back issue that sidelined him recently, according to a report from Stu Jackson of Rams.com. 'There's no restrictions and he's playing at a really high level. ... He's looked like the stud we know,' according to head coach Sean McVay.
Footballguys view: Good news for the Rams here. Stafford has been battling back problems all summer long. It's tricky for any player, but especially for an older player like Stafford.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) practiced again Tuesday, Aug. 19. He hit the field for the first time on Monday after being sidelined for nearly a month with a back injury.
Footballguys view: Being on the field Tuesday indicates Stafford didn't have any sort of setback or aggravation after Monday's practice. Sean McVay said he wanted to see how Stafford's back would respond following his first practice, and it seems to have gone well. Not only did Stafford go through individual drills with the other quarterbacks, USA Today's Cameron DaSilva notes the QB was participating in the team portion of practice, too. The Rams are still being cautious, but as long as Stafford continues to progress, DaSilva contends the QB should reasonably be ready for Week 1.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced for the first time during training camp on Monday, with the team noting that he was a full participant in an hour-long practice. Head coach Sean McVay told reporters that Stafford looked good practicing, but added that he doesn't have any further updates. "It was good to be able to have Matthew out there. He did a good job today," McVay said. "I think there was a lot of intended information, but there are no updates. We're going to keep it a day, and really, a week at a time."
Footballguys view: McVay did not share what the rest of the week would be like when it comes to Stafford's practice schedule. McVay also would not go into a level of confidence for Stafford being ready for the opener. "I think that would be putting the cart way before the horse," McVay said, via Gary Klein of the L.A. Times. "I thought he did a good job today." Stafford, 37, had not practiced in training camp until Monday as he's been dealing with a disc issue in his back. We'll continue to follow up as developments warrant.

Footballguys view: This comes after Los Angeles did not confirm if Stafford had gone through his Saturday workout over the weekend, noting head coach Sean McVay would address the situation on Monday. While it's currently unclear how much Stafford will participate, multiple reporters on the scene note Stafford is taking snaps during individual drills. Stafford, 37 and entering his 17th pro season, has been dealing with a disc issue in his back. We'll follow up as needed.

Footballguys view: After expectations were set for a Monday return, Stafford is now officially behind schedule. The Rams' staff remains steadfast in the belief that he'll be back soon. But fantasy managers who planned to invest early picks in Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Kyren Williams wouldn't be blamed for looking elsewhere at this point.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (back) is not participating in practice Monday, Aug. 11. Head coach Sean McVay previously stated the plan was for Stafford to participate in individual drills Monday.
Footballguys view: This is becoming a discouraging pattern. The Rams could simply not set goals to get back Stafford back on the practice field and then him missing practice wouldn't seem so ominous. Still, they have one of the best backup quarterbacks in Jimmy Garoppolo and offensive-minded head coaches in Sean McVay, so there's no reason to panic about Rams players or push them significantly down your board.
