Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger suffers apparent injury    Tue Jun 15, 07:02 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (undisclosed) needed to receive some attention from the trainers during practice Tuesday, June 15, but head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that it was nothing serious.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is one tough cookie but at this age we'd like to hear about him getting through practice unscathed. Tomlin says it's nothing serious, so Roethlisberger should be out there ASAP as he prepares to make one more (final?) run in 2021.

Steelers | Dwayne Haskins receives praise    Tue Jun 1, 06:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins has looked great early in organized team activities, according to QB Ben Roethlisberger Tuesday, June 1. Roethlisberger said Haskins' throwing mechanics 'are some of the prettiest I've seen.'

Footballguys view: There was a lot to like about Haskins when he came out of Ohio State in 2019. He's got a rocket arm, and Haskins played with poise - attacking a defense deep and making high/low reads with ease. Things fell apart for him with Washington, and now he's getting a second chance with the Steelers. If he puts it all together, perhaps Haskins could be an option for the Steelers after Ben Roethlisberger is done. At this time, Pittsburgh seems to be counting on Mason Rudolph as a future starter and that's not a great plan. It's not like Haskins is a guarantee, but his upside is higher if he finally starts playing up to his potential.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger discusses elbow injury    Tue Jun 1, 01:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger disclosed to reporters Tuesday, June 1, that his offseason elbow procedure in 2020 was a 'total reconstruction' and that surgery might have had something to do with his inability to throw deep with any kind of consistency last season.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger reveals quite a bit in this report. A "total reconstruction" helps further explain why he didn't quite look like himself throwing downfield in 2020 after missing most of the 2019 season. The Steelers should be a more balanced offense (hello Najee Harris!) in 2021 and limit what Roethlisberger is asked to do as a passer in what could be his final pro season.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger sputtered to finish    Fri Apr 9, 11:26 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger ranked 31st in yards per pass attempt from Week 10 to the end of the season, and he threw at least one interception in five of his final six starts.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger looked finished near the end of the season. It happens to the best of them, and Roethlisberger is going to try and get through one more year as the starter. We're not expecting much from the veteran this year.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger contract details    Thu Mar 4, 02:25 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger signed a restructured contract Thursday, March 4.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is taking a page from other veteran quarterbacks like Peyton Manning who had to do this near the end of their careers. He agreed to reduce his pay to $14 million from $19 million in the final year of his contract and spread the cash payment through 2022, per source. The moves lowered his cap hit to $15 million in 2021, giving the team more flexibility.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger lands new deal    Thu Mar 4, 01:18 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on Thursday, March 4, signed a restructured contract with the team and will return for an 18th season. Terms of the new deal were not immediately available. 'We are excited we were able to come to an agreement with Ben Roethlisberger on a new contract for him to return to the Steelers in 2021,' general manager Kevin Colbert said in a story posted on the team's website. 'We know that Ben can still play at a high level and do special things for this team. Our goal remains the same - to put together a roster that will compete for another championship. We are happy that Ben will be one of our leaders to help us accomplish that goal.'

Footballguys view: Lots of veteran quarterbacks do this sort of move near the end of their career. Roethlisberger makes room to help the team and to ensure that he stays with the team. He looked good at times in 2020 but fell off as the season went on. The Steelers need to make plans for the future because Mason Rudolph is not the answer when Roethlisberger is done.

Steelers | PIT confident in Ben Roethlisberger     Fri Feb 26, 12:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger likely will be playing with a restructured contract in 2021, and Steelers president Art Rooney II is confident Roethlisberger can guide the franchise to success. 'We think Ben played at a high level last year,' Rooney recently told the team's website. 'We won our division and set a franchise record for most consecutive wins to open a season, so there was a lot of good stuff. Ben was as disappointed as anybody the way it ended. That last game is just hard to swallow, and I think in part Ben wants to come back and leave on a high note. We're still confident he has the ability to do that. His arm, I would say, is as strong or almost as strong as ever, so I think he's certainly capable of getting the job done. Part of the concern is putting a (competitive) team around him, and we had a good discussion about that. We know there are still a lot of pieces to the puzzle that still have to fall into place this season, and we're hard at work trying to make that happen.'

Footballguys view: Ah, the dreaded vote of confidence. Roethlisberger is near the end of his career, but the Steelers seem bound and determined to let him have one more year as the starter. We'll see if they have more balance on offense as being pass-happy with an aging quarterback like Roethlisberger is not a great plan.

Steelers | Owner confirms Big Ben returning    Wed Feb 24, 10:33 AM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will return in 2021, according to team president Art Rooney II.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is near being washed up in the NFL. It comes at you fast, and he just doesn't look like the same quarterback he used to be. If the Steelers have more balance on offense, then perhaps he could eek out one more year as the starter. Having a pass-happy system with a quarterback who is past his prime doesn't make a lot of sense.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger will return for 2021    Tue Feb 23, 06:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will return as the team's starting quarterback for the 2021 season, according to his agent, Ryan Tollner, Tuesday, Feb. 23. 'They want Ben back and will contact me soon to address his cap situation,' Tollner said.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger hurt by dropped passes    Fri Feb 19, 03:14 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had 41 of his passes dropped by his pass catchers this season. He has only 26 over the previous two seasons.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger's receivers didn't do him any favors...but his game still looks bad compared to what he used to be. Tom Brady had 45 drops by his receivers in 2020 and won the Super Bowl. We'll see if Roethlisberger sticks with the Steelers for the 2021 season and if his receivers make more plays for him.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger's status still uncertain    Wed Feb 17, 01:18 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has told the team he wants to continue playing, but general manager Kevin Colbert said the team is still evaluating the situation. Colbert said the two sides will need to figure out the finances if Roethlisberger wants to return.

Footballguys view: There are plenty of analysts coming out now to say the Steelers can move on from Roethlisberger. The problem is, Mason Rudolph is their backup and he's a backup-caliber player at best. Roethlisberger has said he'll rework his deal to stay with the team, and we'll see if the two sides can work something out and give it one more try in what could be his final pro season.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger to meet with team officials    Mon Feb 8, 02:32 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is set to meet with team officials during the upcoming week to discuss his contract situation and future with the club, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger has one year remaining on his contract, and he wants to play in 2021 even though it looks like his game is nearing the end. He's stated that he doesn't care what he makes this year from the Steelers, so expect a restructuring so the team can free up some much-needed cap space.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger open to restructure    Thu Jan 28, 05:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is not only open to restructuring his contract, but he told Ed Bouchette of The Athletic on Thursday, Jan. 28, that it was his idea 'to basically help the team however I can this year.'

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger has a cap hit of $41.2 million in 2021, and there is $22.2 million remaining in dead money. He'll have to rework that deal in some form or fashion to help out the Steelers salary cap situation for next season. It's the last year of his contract, so there are plenty of ways to make the money work.

Steelers | Pay cut ahead for Ben Roethlisberger?    Thu Jan 28, 02:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is wanted back for an 18th season, Steelers president Art Rooney II said Thursday, Jan. 28, but Rooney added that Roethlisberger and the team will have to reach an agreement over his 'significant' salary-cap hit for the 2021 season.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger expected back    Sat Jan 16, 01:02 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is eliciting optimism within the organization that he'll return for an 18th season in 2021, according to a report Saturday, Jan. 16.

Footballguys view: For years, it seemed like Roethlisberger was toying with the idea of retiring even though he still had something left in the tank. Now, when it seems like Roethlisberger is washed up, he wants to stick around. The Steelers will roll forward with Roethlisberger as their starter in 2021 but they seriously need to make a plan for life without him in the near future. Mason Rudolph is signed through the 2021 season but he's a below-average backup with no future to be a starter for the Steelers.

Steelers | 'Reasonable to assume' Ben Roethlisberger returns    Wed Jan 13, 08:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's future with the team is unknown as he heads into the final year of his contract at a cap hit of $41.25 million. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday, Jan. 13, there's a decent chance Roethlisberger is back in 2021. 'I don't have a clear assessment of the overall depth of the cap ramifications, but I think it's reasonable to assume there's a chance he'll be back, certainly,' Tomlin said. Releasing Roethlisberger would leave Pittsburgh with $22.25 million in dead cap, according to Spotrac.

Footballguys view: For years it seemed like Roethlisberger was toying around with the idea of retiring. Now that his game looks shot, Roethlisberger is excited to stick around with the Steelers. The offense must run the ball effectively and the defense must play a swarming style to win games with a nearly-washed up veteran quarterback.
