Patriots | Could pursue Patrick Ramsey    Fri Jul 1, 05:17 PM

The New England Patriots could show interest in Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Patrick Ramsey because the team likes bring in a veteran quarterback for training camp.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are looking for another camp arm, and someone who could push second-year QB Jonathan Crompton in training camp. Brian Hoyer should remain the primary backup behind superstar Tom Brady.

Vikings | Joe Webb likely will start Week 15    Thu Dec 16, 12:45 PM

Minnesota Vikings QB Joe Webb likely will start in the team's Week 15 game with QB Patrick Ramsey expected to be the primary backup quarterback, according to Jeremy Fowler, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey and Matt Waldman watched Webb up close during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL earlier this year and came away impressed by his athletic ability. Webb was practicing as a wideout then and looked raw at the position. The Vikings drafted him because of his rare athletic ability, but decided to keep him at quarterback. Webb has a strong arm and can keep a play alive with his feet, but his accuracy needs improvement and he needs to be more thorough when going through his progressions.

QB Drew Brees will be given an unspecified number of snaps before he hands over the duties to QB Patrick Ramsey.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Brees only needs a few snaps in the preseason as the Saints gear up to defend their Super Bowl title this year.

Saints | Patrick Ramsey expected to sign this week    Wed Jul 21, 11:31 AM

The New Orleans Saints are prepared to sign free-agent QB Patrick Ramsey (Lions) this week, according to Jason La Canfora, of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: The Saints currently only have Chase Daniel and rookie Sean Canfield as backup quarterbacks. Canfield could find his way to develop on the practice squad if Ramsey signs. Daniel would then battle Ramsey for the primary backup job behind Drew Brees.

Saints | Patrick Ramsey likely to sign    Mon Jun 7, 09:58 AM

The New Orleans Saints will likely sign free-agent QB Patrick Ramsey (Lions) in July, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Footballguys view: Don't assume Ramsey will be the backup. Chase Daniel has been getting great reviews in OTAs and Drew Brees has taken the pint-sized QB under his wing.

Saints | May sign QB Patrick Ramsey    Sun Jun 6, 03:57 PM

Jeff Duncan, from the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports most Saints fans assume a veteran free agent will be signed to replace Mark Brunell as Drew Brees' backup. And indeed, Saints officials have said another arm likely will be added before training camp starts next month. (Hint: Put your money on Patrick Ramsey.)

Footballguys view: The former Tulane star could go back to the bayou to compete with Chase Daniel for the backup job behind Drew Brees. Daniel has been with the team for about a year, but Ramsey has more experience in the league and may be a more capable backup at this time.

Saints | Working out McCown, Ramsey    Thu Apr 8, 05:21 PM

Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports the New Orleans Saints are working out unrestricted free-agent QB Josh McCown (Panthers) and QB Patrick Ramsey (Lions) Thursday, April 8, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mark Brunell is an unrestricted free agent so the Saints are looking at other veterans to back up Drew Brees. Chase Daniel was the third-string quarterback last year, but still needs to further develop his game and could not be counted on as the starter if Brees were to be injured.

Titans | Simms, Ramsey visit    Tue Mar 30, 05:28 PM

Bryan Mullen, of The Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans met with unrestricted free-agent QB Chris Simms (Broncos) and QB Patrick Ramsey (Lions) Tuesday, March 30.

Footballguys view: Both Simms and Ramsey have spent time with the Titans before, so this is not a surprise that they're looking for work back in Tennessee. Vince Young and Kerry Collins are currently the only quarterbacks on the Titans roster, so we expect them to add at least one more quarterback before the start of training camp.

Titans | QB Ramsey released, CB Williams signed    Sat Oct 3, 03:37 PM

The Tennessean is reporting the Titans have released quarterback Patrick Ramsey, and activated CB Cary Williams from practice squad.

Footballguys view: Before the preseason some had speculated that Patrick Ramsey was a serious threat to Vince Young's job as the Titans number two quarterback. That QB controversy never surfaced, and now Ramsey is free to sign with another team. It's likely that he could end up back with Tennessee if nobody wants to sign him.

The Tennessee Titans have declared TE Bo Scaife, CB Cary Williams, DL Jacob Ford, DL Kevin Vickerson, WR Lavelle Hawkins, QB Patrick Ramsey, DL Sen'Derrick Marks, OT Troy Kropog inactive for Week 2.

Footballguys view: Alge Crumpler is expected to get the start for Bo Scaife, but Jared Cook is active. If the ankle injury that limited Cook in practice allows, Cook could see a number of targets with Scaife down today.

Titans | Young outplays Ramsey 'by a good bit'    Fri Jul 31, 07:48 PM

Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports that QB Vince Young had a good day of practice and outperformed Patrick Ramsey "by a good bit". Kuharsky also writes that Young was generally on target whether he was in the pocket or on the move.

Footballguys view: If reports like this continue to roll in, we might even recommend trading for Young in your dynasty leagues. The competition with Ramsey could re-light the fire under Young that has been missing since 2007.

Titans | Competition for No. 2 quarterback    Mon Jul 20, 11:42 AM

Jim Wyatt, of The Tennessean, reports there will be legitimate competition between Tennessee Titans QBs Vince Young and Patrick Ramsey for the team's No. 2 quarterback job during training camp. All things equal, the Titans would love for Young to blow Ramsey - and starting QB Kerry Collins, for that matter - out of the water and succeed. However, it is uncertain whether it's ever going to work for Young in Tennessee, and there are those inside the organization who think that it won't.

Footballguys view: Young's attitude has wavered between "I'm going to shut up and play my role" to "I want to start and trade me if I can't" during the offseason. We still think he hasn't "got it" since his troubles last year and wouldn't be surprised if Ramsey beats him out to be the backup QB. Young's cap number next year is $14 million, and it looks very unlikely that he'll justify that cost.

Titans | Young, Ramsey expects to fight for backup job    Mon Jun 22, 04:42 PM

Terry McCormick, of The Nashville City Paper, reports Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young and QB Patrick Ramsey are expected to compete for primary backup quarterback job during training camp and their performance in preseason games likely will determine the winner.

Footballguys view: Patrick Ramsey backed up Jay Cutler for the past 2 seasons and had no chance of moving up the depth chart. He signed a 1-year deal with the Titans shortly after Chris Simms (who was #3 in Tennessee last year) signed with the Broncos. He is more like Kerry Collins than Vince Young, so if forced into the starting lineup the Titans wouldn't have much of a different look on offense. Add in the fact that Ramsey has played for offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger before (in 2007) and it means there won't be much of a learning curve for the former 1st rounder. If Vince Young isn't careful he could fall from starting QB to clipboard holder in only one year. This is a battle that will be decided in training camp, and the 3rd preseason game should give us an indication as to who is winning.

Titans | Any outside interest in Young?    Tue Jun 2, 10:29 AM

Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young may be overrating the outside interest in his services as it is unlikely another team would trade for Young's contract.

Footballguys view: Young would have to be released to move on, and the Titans will not make a move anytime soon. However, if Young were to struggle in the preseason, QB Patrick Ramsey could emerge as the No. 2 quarterback should he have a good preseason.
