Baltimore Ravens WR C.J. Board, WR Keenan Reynolds and RB Lorenzo Taliaferro were waived Friday, Sept. 1. The team also released RB Bobby Rainey and WR Griff Whalen.

Footballguys view: The release of Taliaferro and Rainey is a good sign that Danny Woodhead's hamstring injury is minor.

Ravens | Bobby Rainey lands in Baltimore    Wed Jul 26, 12:22 PM

Free-agent RB Bobby Rainey (Giants) signed an undisclosed contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday, July 26.

Footballguys view: Rainey is added due to Kenneth Dixon's season-ending injury. He's a compact runner with limited starting experience. The Ravens have a yawn-inducing backfield with Terrance West leading the way. We love Danny Woodhead in PPR leagues though. Expect the Ravens to look at adding another running back during camp.

Giants | Bobby Rainey to split load    Thu Sep 29, 09:08 AM

New York Giants RB Bobby Rainey is likely to split the load with RB Orleans Darkwa in Week 4 with RB Rashad Jennings (thumb) likely out.

Footballguys view: We'll pass on this as the team also faces one of the best run defenses in the NFL--the Minnesota Vikings. The new Purple People Eaters are ranked fourth against the run according to Football Outsiders' DVOA metric and are not a great matchup for this backfield.

Giants | Orleans Darkwa playing catch-up    Tue Jun 28, 10:21 PM

New York Giants RB Orleans Darkwa (leg) missed the entire spring practice sessions due to a lower leg injury, and that set him back in the pecking order among the team's tailbacks. He is expected to battle RB Andre Williams for the No. 3 job, while RB Bobby Rainey is also in the mix. The team invested a fifth round pick on RB Paul Perkins, so he is expected to make the team, too.

Footballguys view: It's likely to come down to Darkwa vs Williams for a roster spot...and we'd take Darkwa 10 times out of 10. He's a patient runner who could get on the field for the Giants they get inside the 20-yard line. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the Giants backfield as it's a bit of a mess, but make sure to keep Darkwa on the waiver-wire speed dial just in case.

Giants | Bobby Rainey to sign with NYG    Sun Apr 10, 08:43 PM

Free-agent RB Bobby Rainey (Buccaneers) announced Sunday, April 10, that he has agreed to sign with the New York Giants.

Footballguys view: He's no lock to make the final roster. The Giants could take a RB early in the draft to be their lead back. Rainey is merely a backup with change-of-pace ability.

Dolphins | Bobby Rainey visits Miami    Thu Mar 31, 05:10 PM

Free-agent RB Bobby Rainey (Buccaneers) visited the Miami Dolphins Thursday, March 31.

Footballguys view: What is this, Pokemon running backs? Gotta catch them all? The Dolphins continue to spin their wheels no matter the position. Rainey has had a little success, but right now the team seems to be interested in just adding warm bodies.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey signs tender    Fri Apr 24, 06:42 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers restricted free-agent RB Bobby Rainey signed his one-year tender offer Friday, April 24. Rainey will make $1.542 million in 2015.

Footballguys view: Rainey is a reserve runner with little dynasty value. He'll fill in once in a while as a change-of-pace back, but we've never been overly impressed with his ability to be anything more than a spot starter or backup.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin has backer in Lovie    Thu Apr 9, 08:18 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin has a supporter in head coach Lovie Smith. Smith said the team hasn't 'seen the true Doug Martin yet.' Smith also said RB Bobby Rainey is the current starting punt returner.

Footballguys view: The tenor on Martin is positive publicly, but the Bucs are rumored to love Charles Sims and were also mentioned in connection with some big RB names that were possibly available. Martin's fifth-year option decision is coming up after the draft. It's a paltry 5.621 million, so if it isn't a yes, that will be telling. Then again, the Saints declined Mark Ingram's option last year and ended up re-signing him for less on a per year basis.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey receivers tender    Tue Mar 10, 09:56 PM

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers restricted free-agent RB Bobby Rainey received a $1.54 million tender Tuesday, March 10.

Footballguys view: Rainey is a decent back to keep around, and that's what the Bucs are essentially doing here. He'll once again work as a RB3 behind Doug Martin and Charles Sims. The team now has the right to match any offer from another organization.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey out of boot    Thu Dec 4, 02:09 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey (ankle) is out of a walking boot, but he is not participating in practice Thursday, Dec. 4.

Footballguys view: We don't much like anyone here, with or without Rainey on the field. Your 'best' bet is Doug Martin and even he is only an RB4 at very best. So avoid this if you can.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey in walking boot    Wed Dec 3, 04:24 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 3, and he was seen in a boot for his injured right foot. Rainey handled punt and kickoff return duties in Week 13.

Footballguys view: This isn't a good sign for his playing status. He's behind Doug Martin and Charles Sims now anyway....fantasy owners have other options.

Buccaneers | Charles Sims emerges as lead back    Mon Nov 17, 10:17 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Charles Sims emerged with a team-high 13 carries and 36 yards rushing in Week 11. RB Bobby Rainey started the game, but Sims took over the bulk of the work after the first series. Sims caught three passes and ran in short-yardage situations as well.

Footballguys view: It wouldn't surprise us to see Sims start the next game. The rookie has a fine all-purpose skill set, but he didn't do a whole lot in Week 11 with an expanded role. In certain matchups, we'd consider him a flex play.

Buccaneers | Charles Sims' role to gradually increase    Wed Nov 12, 10:02 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Charles Sims' role is expected to gradually increase as long as fumbles don't be come an issue. RB Bobby Rainey was better at catching passes in Week 10.

Footballguys view: Sims has a skill set similar to that of a poor man's version of Matt Forte. We're intrigued by his upside, but the RB/OL situation in Tampa is pretty ugly right now. Sims is nothing but a desperation 'what the heck' flex against Washington in Week 11.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin could take backseat    Tue Nov 4, 10:35 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin could be relegated to a backup role behind a two-man committee in RBs Bobby Rainey and Charles Sims.

Footballguys view: That's where we are with the 2012 first-round pick. Fantasy owners need to respond here. Rainey and Sims are likely to split time initially, but know that Sims is the better talent and he could possibly emerge with a larger chunk of the pie. Of course, that pie is from Tampa's offense....so it might not be that tasty.

Buccaneers | Bucs have faith in Doug Martin    Wed Oct 8, 04:30 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin is averaging just 2.5 yards per carry this year, but quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo, who is acting as the interim play-caller, is happy with the play of Martin. 'I like the things Doug has done,' Arroyo said. 'Our run game has to improve, obviously, overall. We believe that as a staff that starts with us. I think wholeheartedly we need to continue to find out what exactly it takes to get us back on track in the run game. There's going to be some finer points, detail and those things execution-wise.' Arroyo doesn't mind giving RB Bobby Rainey carries, but he believes that Martin is still the team's leading running back.

Footballguys view: Martin just doesn't look the same as he did as a rookie phenom in 2012. We'll see if the team's faith will be rewarded by Martin in the near future.

Buccaneers | Nine touches for Bobby Rainey    Sun Oct 5, 11:09 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey carried six times for 21 yards and a touchdown in Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints, and he added three receptions for 21 yards.

Footballguys view: Rainey is clearly playing a backup role to Doug Martin now....but he looks more explosive as a runner. The team will likely keep him as a change-of-pace back moving forward.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin expects to play    Thu Sep 25, 02:17 PM

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (knee) said he expects to return in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. 'The knee's coming along just fine,' Martin said. 'Full go in practice, and I expect to play in this upcoming game.' RB Bobby Rainey started in the backfield for the two games that Martin missed.

Footballguys view: Rainey might have been a bigger factor but he coughed the ball up last week, so Martin will get a shot to take his job back. He has a tough matchup this week and the Bucs offense is a mess so we consider Martin as an RB3 right now until he can prove that he will overcome the issues around him as well as his own injury problems.

Buccaneers | No timetable yet on Josh McCown    Fri Sep 19, 03:15 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said it is too soon to tell how long QB Josh McCown (thumb) may be out following his thumb injury suffered Thursday, Sept. 18, in a 56-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Smith also didn't address whether or not QB Mike Glennon might get a chance to start at quarterback even if McCown is healthy.

Footballguys view: McCown has kept the Bucs offense stuck in neutral. Mike Glennon is much better suited to harness the abilities of the twin towers, Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, and if the Bucs are rational, he'll start against the Steelers in Week 4. No word yet on whether the Bucs are rational.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey productive    Fri Sep 19, 02:54 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey, starting in place of injured RB Doug Martin (knee), led the team with seven catches for 64 yards Thursday, Sept. 18, against the Atlanta Falcons. He rushed 11 times for 41 yards in a lopsided loss.

Footballguys view: Rainey had two fumbles, one particularly egregious, but he returned to the game after short benchings and still ran hard and productively. Doug Martin owners should not be breathing sighs of relief, as Rainey showed he still deserves a big part of this backfield. He might be a good flex play against the Steelers next week.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey to start    Thu Sep 18, 10:33 AM

Updating an earlier report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey will start in Week 3. The decision is not primarily because of RB Doug Martin's (knee) injury, but also because the team really likes Rainey.

Footballguys view: It's a Rainey fantasy points! Hallelujah! Reports are now indicating that Martin will not be able to play tonight against the Falcons. That makes Rainey a RB2 with upside for your fantasy team this week. There are some of you out there that can likely flex start him.

Buccaneers | Tampa to use RB committee    Thu Sep 18, 09:20 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (knee) and RB Bobby Rainey are expected to split carries in Week 3 and in the near future.

Footballguys view: This will negate some of both running back's production. This wek Martin is a mid-range RB3 while Rainey is just a little behind him. Both are OK starts but are limited because of the split.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin should play in Week 3    Mon Sep 15, 10:41 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (knee) has a good chance to play in Week 3 on Thursday Night Football. The team held him out of the Week 2 game to ensure that he would be ready for Week 3 at Atlanta. RB Bobby Rainey, who had 22 carries for 144 yards in Week 2, could be heavily involved as well.

Footballguys view: Rainey looks better than Martin. It's a tough pill to swallow for some, but that's what we've seen unfold so far in 2014. We think Rainey has played his way into a RBBC with Martin based on his solid play.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (knee) is unlikely to play Sunday, Sept. 14, in the opinion of beat writer Tom Krasniqi. RB Bobby Rainey is expected to see more action in Week 2, regardless of Martin's status.

Footballguys view: Jay Glazer of Fox now reports that Martin is indeed out. Bobby Rainey becomes a good flex play with RB2 upside.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin fine physically    Tue Sep 9, 05:38 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin's (leg) leg injury in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers wasn't the reason why he wasn't on the field during crunch time late in the game, according to head coach Lovie Smith. 'Bobby Rainey had come and had given us a little bit of life, and as I've mentioned we want to play more than one running back throughout. So it was just a perfect time to keep both of them involved,' Smith said. Martin is physically fine, despite having nine carries for just nine yards in Week 1.

Footballguys view: Um, okay--then why does he look so bad? Martin finished his rookie season (2012) as the 3rd best running back in fantasy football. His 2013 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, and he didn't look the same before the injury. This season, Martin SHOULD be able to bounce back to be at least a decent RB2. The start he had to the 2014 season does not instill confidence in his fantasy owners.

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey and Mike James likely to compete for backup job    Fri Aug 15, 04:15 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey and RB Mike James are likely to compete for the back up running back job behind Doug Martin. RB Jeff Demps may also be in the mix as a situational player.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on both guys in the preseason here. Both James and Rainey looked good in limited duty last year. James got banged up after Doug Martin went down, which opened the door for Rainey. The former Western Kentucky back looked good against bad defenses but struggled against better teams.
