Cardinals | Carson Palmer retiring    Tue Jan 2, 05:10 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer announced his retirement Tuesday, Jan. 2, after 15 seasons in the NFL.

Footballguys view: With Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians retiring, it's no surprise to see Palmer do the same thing. The no1 overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, Palmer began his career with the Bengals and had all the makings of a superstar quarterback. A devastating knee injury in a playoff game against the Steelers knocked his career off track and he was never quite the player he was pre-injury. Palmer went to the Raiders for a couple of forgettable seasons and then found a nice fit with the Cardinals and Arians. He finishes his pro career with a 62.5 completion percentage, 46,246 passing yards, 294 passing touchdowns and 187 interceptions.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer would start in 2018    Wed Dec 6, 12:11 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) will be the team's starting quarterback in 2018 if he decides to play, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals could get a top-10 pick in the 2018 NFL draft but they might be targeting offensive line help rather than a rookie quarterback. Palmer's days in the NFL are almost over, so the Cardinals should have a post-Palmer plan in place.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer prepping to return    Sat Dec 2, 09:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) is not sure if he will return this season, but he said he continues to prepare as if he will be back. 'We've got another three weeks before I think I can practice, but I feel great,' Palmer said Friday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are likely out of the playoff picture, but if they win against the Rams this week, next week brings a winnable game against the Titans, and they could still be mathematically alive going into the final weeks of the season.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer not expected back    Wed Nov 22, 03:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) has not made the progress he was expected to make in his rehabilitation and is not expected to return this season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals season is likely over with a 4-6 record. Palmer may have played the final football of his career in 2017. He's incredibly close to retirement, and we wouldn't be surprised if he called it quits. His future is certainly up in the air.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer sheds cast    Mon Nov 20, 04:19 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) recently had his cast removed from his injured arm, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: It has already been said that Palmer could return later this season, and this is a step in the right direction. The Cardinals have a 4-6 record, which likely keeps them out of the playoff picture in 2017. If they're out of it (especially with another loss), then there's no need to rush Palmer back.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer back in Week 16?    Sat Nov 11, 09:21 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) didn't rule out a Week 16 return. 'I could potentially be available the last two weeks of the season,' Palmer said.

Footballguys view: This isn't a reason to pick him up except possibly in deep 2QB/Superflex leagues. Blaine Gabbert could be starting for Arizona next week, which is not good for the chances of the Cardinals still being in playoff contention come Week 16.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer placed on IR    Thu Oct 26, 04:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, Oct. 26.

Footballguys view: Thank goodness it's a bye week for the Cardinals, as their fanbase will be spared the sight of Drew Stanton under center at least one more week. Things look grim for this offense right now, and won't look better if Stanton is yanked for Blaine Gabbert.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer having surgery    Wed Oct 25, 09:53 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) will have surgery to repair his broken arm Wednesday, Oct. 25, according to a source. He hopes to return quicker than the eight-week window.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are initially turning to Drew Stanton as their starter. Don't be surprised if he eventually see Blaine Gabbert at the top of the depth chart if (when?) Stanton struggles. Palmer's injury is to his non-throwing arm, so perhaps that increases his chances of returning sooner than the eight-week timetable.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer thinks he can return    Mon Oct 23, 05:16 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) believes he may be able to return in four to six weeks, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: That is an optimistic timetable compared to the eight-week window that was initially predicted. Arians said the team will wait to see what the doctors say but that Palmer could be designated to return if he is placed on the Reserve/Injured list. The Cardinals will move forward with Drew Stanton as their quarterback...but if he struggles they could eventually turn to Blaine Gabbert while Palmer is out.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer breaks arm    Sun Oct 22, 04:05 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) suffered a broken left arm during the team's Week 7 game and will need to undergo surgery, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Palmer will miss at least eight weeks and could miss the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are going into their bye without a starting quarterback. Drew Stanton was horrendous and the team could look to Blaine Gabbert with a week to ponder their options, or maybe eventually if Stanton doesn't improve.

Cardinals | Arm injury for Carson Palmer     Sun Oct 22, 02:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (arm) suffered a left arm injury in Week 7 and is considered questionable to return.

Footballguys view: Drew Stanton is in at quarterback. The Cardinals had been warming up and moving back into contention, but that won't last long if Palmer is out. At least Arizona's bye is next week.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer has solid performance    Sun Oct 8, 05:06 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer went 28-for-44 for 291 yards and one touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5.

Footballguys view: Palmer was only useful for fantasy leagues because the Cardinals fell so far behind. They have no running game to speak of and will likely rely on Palmer to move the offense all year, keeping him as a starting fantasy quarterback consideration against the Bucs next week.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer throws for 357 yards    Sun Oct 1, 11:20 PM

Cardinals | Carson Palmer working deep    Thu Sep 28, 02:15 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has 25 completions of more than 15 yards this season, including a league-high 10 in Week 3. For the season, only New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (30) has more.

Footballguys view: Man, that Brady always has to one-up everyone. Let old man Palmer have his moment in the sun! Palmer has a solid matchup against San Francisco this week, and the only thing which will probably take him out of the QB1 conversation this week is that the Cardinals could get up early and settle in to run the ball and preserve their old quarterback.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer on track to play    Sat Sep 23, 05:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (non-injury) fully participated in practice Saturday, Sept. 23, and is not on the injury report for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners who stream QBs are not really thrilled if Palmer is their option this week. It's a Monday night game against the Cowboys that gave up four TD passes to Trevor Siemian (Broncos) last week. The Cardinals offense has gotten off to a slow start in 2017, and they are hoping to get things revved up faster in Week 3.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer rebounds in Week 2    Sun Sep 17, 05:59 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer threw for 332 yards on 19-for-36 passing, with one touchdown and one interception, in a 16-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Footballguys view: Palmer kept plugging and posted a decent fantasy line, but he failed on fourth and goal and threw a red zone interception. This is about as easy as it will get for Palmer this year, so if this is all he can muster, he's not going to be of much use to us this year.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer expects different offense    Thu Sep 14, 10:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he expects the offense to change 'drastically' without RB David Johnson (wrist).

Cardinals | Carson Palmer tosses three INTs    Sun Sep 10, 07:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer completed 27 of his 48 pass attempts for 269 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Week 1 at Detroit.

Footballguys view: Palmer was a mess and only semi-garbage time helped him avoid being a complete loss for fantasy. His weak early season schedule brings Indy next week, but it might be hard to start him if he cost you your matchup this week.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer takes part in practice    Thu Sep 7, 05:23 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (non-injury) fully participated in practice Thursday, Sept. 7.

Footballguys view: Palmer got the day off on Wednesday just to rest. He's a QB2 for fantasy owners in 2017, and this week against the Lions you likely have a better option than Palmer at quarterback.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer rests up before opener    Wed Sep 6, 06:00 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (rest) did not practice on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer solid in dress rehearsal    Sat Aug 26, 09:47 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer completed eight of his 13 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Palmer starts out the year with four weak defenses and he's a worthy QB1 for the month of September for quarterback streamers.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer to see more time in preseason    Sun Jul 23, 05:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer will receive more playing snaps this preseason than he did in 2016, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Palmer apparently suffered a "dead arm" last year, so this could help get him warmed up before the season. It doesn't appear to be strictly about Palmer, as Arians said all of the starters will get more work than last year.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer will not play in HOF game    Sat Jul 22, 06:06 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer will be held out of the Hall-of-Fame game on Thursday, August 3, against the Dallas Cowboys in Canton, Ohio.

Footballguys view: Palmer is the key to the Cardinals season, so there's no reason to take any unnecessary risks with him in the preseason opener, which is an extra game. Even when starters do take the field in the hall of fame game, they play one series at the most.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer threw too much last offseason    Thu Jul 20, 09:45 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer wore his arm out from throwing too much last offseason, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians said they've found a good routine for Palmer.

Footballguys view: The guy is 400 years old in football years, so making sure he doesn't overdo it is a good idea for a team with - at minimum - playoff aspirations. Without Palmer, the Cardinals have serious problems at quarterback so no Palmer probably equals no playoff success. While we think a healthy Palmer with a healthy receiving corps could make for a solid QB2, his ADP is showing that Fantasy GMs are skittish. Right now it hovers at 135 overall and Palmer is the 20th quarterback off the board making him a potential value at the moment.

Cardinals | Retirement decision coming for Carson Palmer after 2017    Wed Jun 28, 08:21 PM

Kyle Odegard, from AZCardinals.com, reports Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is still invested in playing football. In a recent interview, Palmer revealed that he's not going to make any retirement decision until after the 2017 season. "I love every facet of it," Palmer said. "I don't want to stop. But I'll have to wait and make that decision after the season."

Footballguys view: Palmer isn't done just yet, and 2017 may not be his final year in the league...but it does look that way right now. The Cardinals are trying to make one more run with Palmer at the helm, and they'll be in the mix for the playoffs in 2017. They need Palmer to get off to a better start than he did last year if they want to secure themselves a postseason berth.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer unsure about future    Tue Jun 27, 07:12 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he is not ready to say how much longer he will play football.

Footballguys view: This may be the last hurrah for Palmer in 2017. The Cardinals don't really have a quarterback of the future on the roster as only Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert are on the depth chart behind Palmer. We did see Palmer play better as the 2016 wore on after getting off to a poor start. It will be interesting to see what kind of start he gets off to in 2017.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer noncommittal on future    Tue May 16, 02:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he has no idea if 2017 will be his last year in the NFL. He will evaluate himself when the season is over as he does every year.

Footballguys view: Palmer's time as a starter in the NFL is winding down as he's got a year or two left in our eyes. In 2016, Palmer passed for 4233 yards but his passing touchdown total dropped from 35 to 26. Last year, Palmer finished as the No. 16 fantasy quarterback in standard-scoring leagues. This year, fantasy owners are drafting Palmer at QB21 (13.10) and that should be fairly accurate as a projection of where he'll finish. Palmer is now more of a QB2 than he is a QB1 in fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer to rest this offseason    Fri May 12, 07:01 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer likely will not throw until the end of offseason workouts, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians said the team wants to keep Palmer fresh for the regular season.

Footballguys view: That's just good sense when the backup is Blaine Gabbert. If Palmer goes down early the Cardinals are cooked so they have to keep him fresh.

Cardinals | Arizona wants long-term quarterback    Mon Feb 13, 04:53 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is returning for a 14th NFL season, but general manager Steve Keim admits that he wants to find a quarterback for the Cardinals long-term future. 'You're not a GM for long if you don't find [a quarterback],' Keim said. 'I have to do a better job with my staff and the coaching staff, we have to identify the right guy and put this organization in position to have success for years to come.

Footballguys view: Keim is right, and the Cardinals need to find a quarterback of the future ASAP. Palmer doesn't have much time left, and his effectiveness as a starter has been waning in recent years. This isn't a great class for quarterbacks, but the Cardinals may select a player at the position in the 2017 NFL draft.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer will play in 2017    Thu Feb 9, 03:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has announced that he will play in 2017 after considering retirement.

Footballguys view: If they can get an offensive line in front of him, Palmer could help them make a serious run towards the playoffs. However, if the line plays like it did last season, Palmer is likely to have a repeat of his disappointing 2016.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer decision coming soon?    Wed Feb 1, 10:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is reportedly 'tied to the hip' with WR Larry Fitzgerald in terms of their playing futures. Fitzgerald announced Wednesday, Feb. 1, he will return for another season, suggesting it is a 'good sign' Palmer will do the same.

Footballguys view: Palmer's fantasy stock fell greatly in 2016 and it might not bounce back this year, assuming he returns, but it is looking highly likely that he does return for next season. The Cardinals can't afford to lose him if they want to contend for the playoffs. This is good news for the value of Fitzgerald, John Brown, David Johnson, and JJ Nelson.

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer sent a text message to The Arizona Republic writer Kent Somers to dispel rumors, stating Palmer's Arizona home is not on the market.

Footballguys view: Palmer's report should be heartening for the team as they wait to see who their quarterback will be next season. He appears to want to keep the perception that he will be with the team in 2017.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians expects stars back in '17    Tue Jan 31, 09:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians expects both QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald to return in 2017. He feels 'comfortable with where they're at' and added, 'I think when the juices start flowing and the injuries go away, they'll both be back. But there's nothing to confirm yet.'

Footballguys view: The Cardinals team structure is hanging in the balance on Palmer's decision. Drew Stanton would be the starter if Palmer doesn't return, which would likely relegate the Cardinals to being a bottom tier team. The wide receiver corps isn't nearly as strong as it looked a year ago with Michael Floyd gone and John Brown's health a big question. Even if Palmer and Fitzgerald return, the Cardinals will soon be at a crossroads.

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has yet to confirm whether he intends to return for another season or retire. At least one prominent general manager and two coaches around the league believe Palmer has played his last down.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals don't have an heir apparent behind Palmer, but that could change quickly if he returns for another season in 2017. The draft isn't great for quarterbacks, but perhaps the Cardinals can locate a potential starter at some point in the process.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said QB Carson Palmer has not told him if he will continue his playing career but he believes Palmer will play in 2017.

Footballguys view: Palmer should return in 2017, but the veteran is clearly not the same player he used to be. The Cardinals have nobody of note behind him, and they should do their best to find Palmer's heir apparent at quarterback through the 2017 NFL Draft.

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is under contract through 2018, but head coach Bruce Arians said in his postseason news conference that the team needs to find a successor for Palmer.

Footballguys view: Arians is right as Palmer is nearing the end of the line. They don't have a successor on the roster, so looking for that player is a must. The draft isn't a great class of QBs this year, but we expect three to go off the board in the first round. Arizona has the 13th-overall pick, and a passer like DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame) could be their selection.
