NFL | Cam Newton not ready to retire    Wed Sep 8, 12:51 PM

Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Patriots) said on Instagram Wednesday, Sept. 8, that he has a lot of football left and isn't ready to retire.

Footballguys view: Newton doesn't have a new team yet, but it shouldn't be too long before some squad out there picks him up. Most thought the Cowboys would go after Newton when he was released by the Patriots but that hasn't happened. Instead, they picked up Will Grier off waivers and Newton is left to wait. He's not retiring but there's no telling where Newton will land. Stay tuned.

Cowboys | Dallas passing on Cam Newton    Thu Sep 2, 01:25 PM

Free agent QB Cam Newton (Patriots) 'has a ton of football left,' in the opinion of Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarhy, but McCarthy added that 'we're very excited about the (QB) group we have.'

Footballguys view: The Cowboys were considered the favorite to land Newton after the Patriots released him a few days ago. Now, it seems like they'll be comfortable with Cooper Rush and Will Grier as the backups to Dak Prescott in 2021.

Football Team | Washington not interested in Cam Newton    Wed Sep 1, 11:07 AM

Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Patriots) will not have interest from the Washington Football Team, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: With Rivera and Newton's previous working history with the Panthers, some were making the connection. Washington moves forward with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter and Taylor Heinicke could get some starts this year as well. Newton may land in the NFC East, but not with Washington but instead in Dallas. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Cam Newton's vax status not an issue    Wed Sep 1, 09:22 AM

Updating a previous report, former New England Patriots QB Cam Newton's vaccination status had no bearing on the team's decision to release him.

Footballguys view: Newton had a misunderstanding with COVID testing and had to miss around a week of practice. Bill Belichick said he did nothing wrong, then he decided to release Newton. We'll see Newton have a choice of a few teams to sign with.

Patriots | Cam Newton released    Tue Aug 31, 10:02 AM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton was released Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Footballguys view: The Patriots send shock-waves around the league with this news. Newton had looked good in camp, although he did miss a week of practice this month due to a COVID test misunderstanding. He's not the same player he used to be, but Newton was looking for a bounce-back season after a subpar 2020 in New England. Reports and speculation are already swirling about a landing spot - perhaps with the Cowboys. Newton won't stay jobless for long, so stay tuned.

Patriots | Cam Newton in driver's seat?    Mon Aug 30, 01:05 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton played a few snaps with the starters Sunday, Aug. 29, before QB Mac Jones entered with the backups in what could have been an indication that Newton is in the lead in the competition. Head coach Bill Belichick refused to name a starter.

Footballguys view: The Patriots will keep everyone guessing for the time being. We always expected Newton to begin the season and then for Jones to take over at some point during the year. Jones has looked great and is in the perfect system for his skill set. Newton is trying to show he can bounce back after a poor performance as the Patriots starter in 2020. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Cam Newton back at practice    Thu Aug 26, 09:23 AM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton is back at practice Thursday, Aug. 26, after his five-day cadence due to COVID-19 protocols.

Footballguys view: There was a misunderstanding about policy which led to Newton's five-day absence. Now, he's back and going to showcase his skill further as he tries to win the starting job. Rookie Mac Jones is the future of the team but the Patriots may go with Newton to begin the regular season.

Patriots | Mac Jones makes his case for QB1    Wed Aug 25, 04:57 PM

New England Patriots QB Mac Jones has shown the 'week-to-week, day-to-day, play-to-play competency' to win the starting job over Cam Newton, according to Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston.'There's no on-field reason for Cam Newton to ever take a meaningful, regular-season snap for the Patriots while Mac Jones is upright and able,' according to Curran.

Patriots | Cam Newton away from team    Mon Aug 23, 11:31 AM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton will be away from the team for five days due to a misunderstanding of COVID-19 tests conducted away from NFL facilities.

Footballguys view: As required by the NFL-NFLPA protocols, he will be subject to the five-day entry cadence process before returning to the facility. This means rookie QB Mac Jones will get more work with the first-team offense while Newton is away. Most think Newton will begin the season as the starter but Jones will be ready to take over in the near future.

Patriots | Cam Newton sharp in preseason win    Thu Aug 19, 10:25 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton completed eight of his nine passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in a 35-0 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Aug. 19.

Footballguys view: Newton had a good performance which is important because Mac Jones is putting pressure on him for the starting job. It's still a wide open battle heading into Week 3 of the preseason.

Patriots | Pats QBs to play in preseason opener    Thu Aug 12, 09:51 AM

New England Patriots QBs Cam Newton and Mac Jones will both play in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 12. Head coach Bill Belichick has previously said that Newton is the team's starting quarterback, so Newton would be expected to take initial snaps.

Footballguys view: How long does Newton stay the starter? That's the main question for Patriots fans and Fantasy GMs this year. Newton looked bad as the starter last year, and the team selected Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft to be a potential franchise quarterback. Jones fits what OC Josh McDaniels wants to do and it seems like only a matter of time before the rookie takes over.

Patriots | Cam Newton: Time to put up    Thu Jul 15, 02:52 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton said Thursday, July 15, that the 2021 season is 'put up or shut up' time. 'For me, the Patriots' organization has been impeccable ... my time there has been everything I could have asked for, Newton said during a radio interview. 'I guess it's now time for me to uphold my end of the bargain, through and through.'

Footballguys view: Newton is correct, this is a make-or-break season for him. The Patriots selected Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft to be their quarterback of the future. Newton and Jones will compete for the starting job in camp, and Newton's experience should help him secure that spot. However, if Newton struggles like he did last season then the Patriots will turn things over to the rookie.

Patriots | Shoulder injury hampered Cam Newton    Fri Jul 9, 12:23 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton said Friday, July 9, in a video posted on YouTube that his shoulder injury suffered in December 2016 affected him and his style of play for the ensuing three-plus years. He added that he began to feel fully recovered only last season.

Footballguys view: Newton had a bad 2020 season but the Patriots brought him back for another run. He's going to compete with rookie first-round pick Mac Jones for the starting job in training camp. Newton could win the job with his experience and improved play, but if he falters then the team might want to just see what they have with Jones in the lineup.

Patriots | Cam Newton working out with teammates    Thu Jul 1, 04:46 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton is working out with WR Jakobi Meyers and TE Jonnu Smith during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Meyers didn't get going until around Week 7 last year but once he did he was getting around seven targets per game. If Newton improves and the passing game performs better this year, Meyers would have more deep flex appeal for Fantasy GMs. Smith is going to compete with Hunter Henry for the starting tight end job with the Patriots in 2021, but expect plenty of two-TE sets.

Patriots | Cam Newton most improved?    Sat Jun 26, 12:58 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton tops NFL analyst Gil Brandt's recently released list of nine players who he believes are 'guaranteed to play better' in 2021. Brandt cites Newton's full 2021 offseason with the team, his 2020 bout with COVID-19 and the Patriots' skill-position upgrades as reasons he's expecting a much better season out of Newton.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Newton plays better in the preseason and how much rookie first-round pick Mac Jones is going to push him for the starting job. Newton should be the starter for the Patriots so long as the team is in contention. Keep that in mind if selecting the veteran passer in your fantasy drafts. If things fall apart for New England, they will want to take a look at Jones as their starter. If they're pushing for the postseason then Newton is likely the guy.

Patriots | Cam Newton ready for minicamp    Mon Jun 14, 02:04 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) will be a full participant at the mandatory minicamp this week despite his hand injury.

Footballguys view: Good news for Newton and the Patriots here. Newton has the most experience as a starter on the roster but the team selected Mac Jones in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft to be their quarterback of the future. He'll have to hold off Jones in training camp to secure the starting job. Newton should do that, but if he falters again this year the team could turn to Jones sometime during the regular season.

Patriots | Cam Newton make take part in minicamp    Sun Jun 13, 12:11 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) made some throws during practice Friday, June 11, and may participate in the mandatory minicamp this week.

Footballguys view: It doesn't sound like his hand injury is more than a typical bump/bruise. The more we hear out of the New England, the more we believe Newton will play most if not all of the season.

Patriots | Cam Newton misses practice    Thu Jun 10, 01:05 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) did not participate in practice Thursday, June 10, but should be fine, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: As always, news and information about injured Patriots players is a bit hazy. Newton will miss OTAs and is expected to miss mandatory minicamp next week as well. His status for the start of training camp is unknown. If he's going to be fine then perhaps he'll be ready in late July. In the meantime, rookie first-round pick Mac Jones gets a larger opportunity to showcase his talent in practice.

Patriots | Cam Newton injury update    Fri Jun 4, 07:58 PM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) has been diagnosed with a slight bone bruise in his hand after hitting the hand on a helmet during practice Friday, June 4, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The painful injury is not considered serious. Newton should miss the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp but most expect him to be 100 percent for training camp. While he's out, rookie first-round QB Mac Jones will get an opportunity to shine with the starters.

Patriots | No broken bones for Cam Newton    Fri Jun 4, 04:07 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) does not have any broken bones in his hand but is scheduled to undergo more tests, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Good news for Newton and the Patriots here. Newton is expected to be 100 percent by the start of training camp, but he'll likely miss the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp. That means rookie first-round pick QB Mac Jones will get a chance to impress in practice. Most believe that Newton is the starter for Week 1, but Jones will start if Newton struggles again this year (if the rookie is ready).

Patriots | Cam Newton sidelined at OTAs    Fri Jun 4, 01:05 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (wrist) appeared to injure his right wrist or hand an hour into the team's OTA practice session Friday, June 4, and didn't return. He was seen flexing his wrist and simulating a throw follow-through afterward.

Footballguys view: Newton isn't in an official quarterback battle with first round pick Mac Jones, but if Jones impresses while Newton possibly misses time, that could change. Damien Harris' ADP would spike if Newton ends up losing out to Jones because Newton is the first option at the goal line - that would open up a big touchdown opportunity for Harris.

Patriots | Cam Newton has better understanding    Thu Jun 3, 12:54 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton understands the offense much better in his second season, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Thursday, June 3. 'He came back this year at a much different position,' McDaniels said of Newton. 'He has a different grasp of the offense, a different understanding of the terminology. Now we're working on refining the precision, the details.'

Footballguys view: Newton was bad last year for the Patriots but he's back this year to prove that he can thrive in this system. He's the starter for now, but rookie first-round pick Mac Jones will push him for that spot when he's ready. Newton is going off the board at QB25 (13.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Cam Newton working on technique    Sun May 23, 12:09 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton has been working with a throwing coach this offseason to improve his technique, and several of his teammates noticed a difference during offseason workouts last week.

Footballguys view: Newton is getting more nuanced as a passer, and that work in the offseason should show up on the field. He's the starter for now but rookie first-round pick Mac Jones is the future at the position. Newton should begin the season as the starter but he may not finish the season at the top of the depth chart. If the team falters or if Jones takes a big step during the year, the Patriots will make a move.

Patriots | Cam Newton the starter?    Fri Apr 30, 12:36 AM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton is the starter until QB Jarrett Stidham or QB Mac Jones is 'ready to compete' for the job, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: Newton is the starter for now, but Jones will develop as a quarterback of the future. It's a great fit for the Patriots as Jones is hyper accurate on short-to-intermediate routes. We'll see how much time it takes for Jones to get up to speed in the NFL. There's a chance that Newton begins the season as the starter but does not end the season atop the depth chart.

Patriots | Robert Kraft wants QB addressed    Wed Mar 31, 06:13 PM

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said about the team's 2021 quarterback Wednesday, March 31, 'one way or another, we have to get that position solidified.' Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham are currently the top QBs on the Patriots' depth chart.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need to find a quarterback of the future. Newton is there to start for this season but after that things are wide open. If a player like Mac Jones (Alabama) fell to them in the first round then that would make a lot of sense. We'll see when they address the position, but it sounds like they will at some point in the 2021 NFL draft.

Patriots | Cam Newton re-signs with Pats    Fri Mar 12, 09:24 AM

Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Patriots) agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots Friday, March 12. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Newton is the most likely Week 1 starter for the Patriots now, but not guaranteed the spot. This probably does take Marcus Mariota out of the running unless the Raiders release him, but Washington will also be motivated to sign him in that event. Newton could help with free agent recruiting and mentoring a quarterback that they take in the draft. He looked spent by the end of the season, but covid was a factor and the Patriots gave him very little to work with at wide receiver and tight end, which should improve this year. He'll still be a fringe rosterable player in 1QB leagues, but his value is back up in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

Patriots | Cam Newton a handful inside the 20    Mon Mar 1, 08:14 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton scored 12 rushing touchdowns inside the red zone in 2020 - the most in the league by a quarterback - according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: We'll see where Newton lands for the 2021 season, but expect this to be a big part of his game no matter who he is playing for. Newton's size and nose for the end zone have always been a hallmark to what he does on the football field.

Patriots | Cam Newton open to short-term deal with NE    Mon Feb 22, 05:22 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Cam Newton said he would be open to signing a one-year contract with the Patriots this offseason.

Footballguys view: Newton is set to hit the open market when the new league year begins. The Patriots are in need of quarterback help, and they may be considering a rookie like Mac Jones (Alabama) in the 2021 NFL draft. They could bring in Newton to start while the rookie gets up to speed. Newton was 'meh' as the starter in 2020 but perhaps the team thinks he deserves one more year as a starting option.

Football Team | Washington would consider Cam Newton    Wed Feb 3, 08:51 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton could garner interest from the Washington Football Team this offseason, if he reaches free agency, according to Washington head coach Ron Rivera Wednesday, Feb. 3. 'I think the biggest thing we can say, guys, is that we're exploring all of our options,' Rivera said when asked about Newton. 'Nothing is off the table. ... we're going to do what we believe is best for us.'

Footballguys view: The move makes sense for a ton of reasons. Washington is looking for quarterback help and Newton could come in and give them that. His history with Rivera means they could pick up where they left off, and Newton could thrive with a strong rushing attack and weapons in the passing game.

Patriots | Cam Newton leads Pats in the finale    Sun Jan 3, 05:34 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton completed 21-of-30 passes for 242 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the New York Jets while running for a game-high 79 yards on 11 totes, including a game-best 49-yard scamper. WR Jakobi Meyers also hit Newton on a 19-yard pass for touchdown. RB Sony Michel rushed 16 times for 76 yards, and he added three grabs for 60 yards and a score. Meyers also posted a team-high 68 receiving yards while running for seven yards, TE Devin Asiasi had two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown, while RB James White ended up with a touchdown grab and 31 yards. WR N'Keal Harry finished with two grabs for 17 yards, while DE Chase Winovich led the way on defense with six total stops, two sacks, two tackles for loss, a pass defensed and three quarterback hits.

Footballguys view: Newton had his best fantasy game of the year in the last game of the year. He could re-sign with the Patriots, but there will be a better market for him in this free agent market even though it wasn't a great season for him and New England. Jakobi Meyers has secured a long term role in the offense with his performance this season.

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton completed 17-of-27 passes for 209 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 15 against the Miami Dolphins and he ran for 38 yards on nine attempts.

Footballguys view: Newton has faded as the season has gone on and the Patriots have as much incentive to try to keep him as their starter next year as fantasy teams that have been consistently underwhelmed do. The Patriots are eliminated from the playoff hunt, so we could see Jarrett Stidham against Buffalo next week.
