Panthers | Jordan Gross sets franchise record Sun Oct 28, 12:47 PM
Carolina Panthers OT Jordan Gross made his 142nd start in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears, setting the franchise record. He passes former S Mike Minter (1997-2006) and WR Muhsin Muhammad (1996-2004, 08-09).

Unrestricted free-agent WR Muhsin Muhammad (Panthers) will announce his retirement from professional football Thursday, June 10, reports Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald.
Footballguys view: From 1996 until now Muhammad was one of the hardest working wide receivers in the NFL. Fantasy owners will remember he was the #1 wideout in fantasy football back in 2004 when he and Steve Smith were racking up big yards in the passing game. We wish Muhammad the best of luck in the future, as he was one of our favorite players to cheer for in the NFL. |

Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports the Carolina Panthers will not re-sign unrestricted free-agent WR Muhsin Muhammad this offseason, according to a source close to Muhammad.
Footballguys view: The Panthers are looking for more youth in their WR corps and should select a WR in the 2010 NFL Draft. Muhammad isn't the same player he used to be, but should catch on with another team (St. Louis) looking for a veteran leader. |

Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox said he is unsure if the team will re-sign free-agent WR Muhsin Muhammad. 'As free agency moves forward, it stays fluid,' Fox said. 'Moose has been great for this organization. I've always appreciated him as a player, as a guy in that locker room. It would be hard for me to predict how that's going to turn out.'
Footballguys view: The Panthers are definitely in the market for a wide receiver opposite of Steve Smith. Former USC WR Dwayne Jarrett has not reached his full potential and likely never will, and Muhammad is no spring chicken. The 2010 NFL Draft class is chock full of potentially great #2 wide receivers, and Carolina should have a lot of value when their first pick in the second-round comes up. |

Charles Chandler, of The Charlotte Observer, reports there has been no indication the Carolina Panthers plan to re-sign free-agent WR Muhsin Muhammad. Muhammad, an unrestricted free agent, turns 36 in May.
Footballguys view: The Panthers need to upgrade the depth at the WR position, and get a playmaking threat opposite Steve Smith. |

Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com, reports Carolina Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad's time with the Panthers may be running short. He is not under contract next year. Despite Muhammad, 36, being reasonably productive this year, the Panthers are painfully aware they must upgrade their receiver position to take pressure off of WR Steve Smith. If Muhammad is willing to play for a low salary and accept a backup role, the Panthers may keep him around as a third or fourth receiver.

Muhammad said, "I think I still have some good, good years of football in me. You get what you get with me. I'm going to be a great blocker. I'm going to catch some tough balls. I'm going to make some big plays here and there, and just go out and play with a lot of fun and enthusiasm." Muhammad said he plans to continue playing "until the wheels fall off." He added, "I'll just let my body and probably management or teams tell me when it's time to quit. If you can do it, do it. If not, then it's time to hang it up."

I still need to get out and get another day of work in and make sure it's healing up right."

Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports that Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad has a sprained MCL in his knee. Muhammad is not sure when he will return, but Reed points out that teammates Thomas Davis and Jon Beason took four weeks and about 20 days to return from their MCL injuries, respectively. "The knee will tell me when it's ready," Muhammad said.
Footballguys view: You can rule him out for this week and pencil Dwayne Jarrett into the lineup. He caught a few passes in the first half last week, including a third-and-long conversion, but he wasn't a big part of the game plan after the Panthers opened up a lead and abandoned the pass. |

Footballguys view: Dwayne Jarrett, the Panthers second-round pick from USC in 2007, could start as the No. 2 receiver in Week 8, while cornerback Sherrod Martin will likely start at free safety. Gary Barnidge, a deep play threat at tight end, could see increased playing time in place of Dante Rosario. |

Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad said he believes the offense is somehow indicating to defenses when the Panthers are going to pass. 'From what I've been seeing defenses are dropping a lot more guys into coverage and, I don't know if it's based on our formations, or the quarterback's drop or what kind of keys they're getting, but the safeties have typically been reading and then trying to drop back into coverage and reading pass. Something is giving them a pass key and they are just double-teaming the pass. It doesn't always start off like Cover 2, but it winds up in Cover 2 or some sort of man with Cover 2, that kind of thing,' Muhammad said.
Footballguys view: The Panthers want to pound the ball on the ground, but have to go to the air from time to time. Steve Smith has been a big disappointment for his fantasy owners, but the Panthers need to get him back on track if they want to stay competitive the rest of the year. |

Footballguys view: The Carolina passing game is stalling right now, but things could get on track quickly. Tight end Dante Rosario could help open things up for both Smith and Muhammad - as long as Jake Delhomme doesn't throw ill-advised passes. |

The Charlotte Observer reports Muhsin Muhammad showed no signs in the preseason that he has fallen off from last season and remains an amazing specimen for a man in his 14th pro season.
Footballguys view: Fantasy owners shouldn't forget about the old man Muhsin Muhammad. The Panthers have no experienced or reliable targets in the passing game outside of Steve Smith and Muhammad. With most defenses focused on stopping Smith and that ground game, Muhammad should be able to take advantage of 1-on-1 coverage. |

The Associated Press reports the NFLPA has informed players that they should save money in case of a lengthy lockout in 2011. 'I think it's very important that we show some restraint on spending a lot of money and being frivolous,' Carolina Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad said. 'I think young players need to worry about necessities, because after two years nothing is guaranteed.' Tennessee Titans DL Kyle Vanden Bosch added, 'From our standpoint right now, you not only prepare for the worst, that seems like the direction it's headed. If players aren't prepared, if guys are in bad financial situations, it hurts our leverage as players.'
