San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (calf) made it through the Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks without any setbacks, but he played 76 percent of the offensive snaps, as opposed to 85 percent of the snaps in the Week 1 game in 2023, which was a lopsided win. RB Brian Robinson Jr. spelled him frequently.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 22 times for 69 yards and caught nine of his 10 targets for 73 yards in a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.
Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan did his best to get McCaffrey the ball, despite the questionable designation the running back carried into the game after suffering a calf injury in Thursday's practice. His 142 scrimmage yards were evidence of that. McCaffrey had his 31st career game with 50-plus rushing and 50-plus receiving yards, the second-most such games in NFL history (behind Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk: 41). No other player has 25-plus such games in his career. Even if the Niners go easy on him in practice this week, expect CMC to play a prominent role against the Saints in Week 2. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (calf) appears to have a good chance play in the Week 1 despite his calf injury, according to sources.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey first was added to the injury report on Thursday as a limited participant. On Friday, McCaffrey was officially a DNP. Now here we are on Saturday, and reports indicate he's going to play. Fantasy GMs need to be cautious here, but that's the way most of us already are approaching McCaffrey at this point in his career. He's an RB1 when healthy, and if Brian Robinson (his primary backup) has to play he's an RB2/flex play. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Jordan James (finger) and WR Jordan Watkins (ankle) were limited in practice all week and are listed as doubtful for Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers are listing RB Christian McCaffrey as limited at today's practice due to a calf issue.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey, who practiced fully on Wednesday, is a newcomer to this week's injury report. According to Bay Area News Group beat writer Cam Inman, McCaffrey initially warmed up as usual. Of course, we thought a year ago McCaffrey was fine for Week 1, then missed two months with Achilles tendinitis and wound up appearing in just four games. We'll obviously be watching this one closely over the next 24 hours -- and perhaps beyond. The 49ers play the Seahawks Sunday in a late-afternoon kickoff. The newly-acquired Brian Robinson Jr. is the next man up at the position. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is healthy for the start of training camp but his workload will be managed as camp goes on, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner previously reported, McCaffrey not only participated in every phase of organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp but was one of the few Niners stars to take reps in team drills. He has made it through well, a good sign for the Niners, given his importance to their success. McCaffrey has quietly crept back into the tail end of the first round of drafts. He's going as RB5 with the ninth pick overall. As we all know, a healthy McCaffrey is capable of outperforming that spot. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey 'looks incredible ... and so explosive,' according to FB Kyle Juszczyk.
Footballguys view: It's a small quote, and these are the type of things often heard in the offseason. "Player A" in the best shape of his life! "Player B" going to be better than ever! That's all nice and well, but with McCaffrey everyone already knows how talented he is at full strength. Fantasy GMs who are taking McCaffrey near the end of the first round (current ADP of RB5) will have to have a plan in place if he misses more time. Isaac Guerendo is in line to be McCaffrey's primary backup in 2025. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) participated in every phase of voluntary OTAs and the mandatory minicamp, and he even took reps during team drills, which was rare among the team's established stars, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Footballguys view: Good news for the 49ers here. Everyone knows McCaffrey is a stud who can be the best back in the league when healthy. It's that staying healthy part that is unknown. McCaffrey says he feels 'great' after being dogged by injuries in 2024. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) 'looked electric' during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey is as â€"healthy as can be†and that the team must â€"protect him from himself.†Everyone knows McCaffrey is an elite playmaker when healthy, but it's been the staying healthy part that has been a problem in recent years. McCaffrey has injury risk, but is seen as a low-end RB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2025. Isaac Guerendo could get more work to keep McCaffrey fresh as the year goes on. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is 'doing great' and will be able to participate in 'at least parts' of the offseason program, according to general manager John Lynch.'We will be judicious and follow the medical folks' advice on that. Christian has done a great job doing the rehab. He's tireless - if anything, you always have to say 'Woah' to Christian. As my friend, (Pittsburgh Steelers head coach) Mike Tomlin (says), 'It's a lot better to have to say 'Woah' than it is to say 'Sic 'em.' Christian is a 'Woah' guy because he's going to do everything possible to give himself a chance,' Lynch said.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (knee) said he is nearly fully recovered from his knee injury and believes he would have been available for the playoffs if the 49ers clinched a spot. He said he will be able to participate in organized team activities.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey appeared in only four games this season. He missed the first eight due to Achilles tendinitis and the last five after a PCL injury. McCaffrey expects to be ready for next season and is eager to return to his NFL Offensive Player of the Year form. When asked about his initial Achilles injury and if it has calmed down enough to no longer be a concern for the 2025 season, McCaffrey responded, "Yeah, a hundred percent." He isn't sure what triggered the initial injury but downplayed speculation that he overworked himself last offseason. Tweaking his offseason workout regimen remains a work in progress, as he hopes to avoid a recurrence this year. McCaffrey admitted that the second injury, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season, was "incredibly hard" to handle. Fantasy managers who invested their first pick overall in the star running back feel the same. We'll be monitoring McCaffrey's progress all offseason. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (knee) was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey is not going to have surgery, but he is going to be out of action for around six weeks. That means his season is done unless the 49ers make a run at the postseason. With Jordan Mason on IR as well, the 49ers turn to Issac Guerendo as their lead back. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (knee) suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury during the Week 13 game and will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. McCaffrey is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.
Footballguys view: Shanahan added that McCaffrey's injury won't require surgery. Of course, that offers little solace to fantasy managers who invested their first overall pick in the veteran running back. Last season's NFL Offensive Player of the Year, McCaffrey did not play in his first game this season until Week 10 after he was placed on injured reserve in September due to calf and Achilles injuries. Now, he has a knee injury to come back from leaving San Francisco concerned about their star tailback's future. In four games, McCaffrey recorded 348 scrimmage yards and had zero touchdowns. Barring a playoff appearance without the star running back, McCaffrey will return in 2025 at 29 years old with $16.2 million due on his salary. With fellow running back Jordan Mason (ankle) also going on IR, Isaac Guerendo is next man up in the Niners backfield and should be a prime waiver-wire pickup in all formats. The team has another back on the practice squad, Patrick Taylor Jr. Expect him to join the active roster soon. The 49ers play the Bears in Week 14. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills and may be done for the rest of 2024.
Footballguys view: Following the 35-10 loss to the Bills, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters in his postgame press conference that McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury that could be season-ending. If so, it will end one of the most disappointing fantasy campaigns for a No. 1 overall pick in recent memory. McCaffrey, playing in his fourth game of the season after missing the first eight with Achilles and calf injuries, will finish with 348 yards from scrimmage, zero touchdowns, and two significant injuries. On top of that, McCaffrey is due $16.2 million in 2025, when he'll be 29 years old. We'll follow up as further details come to light. In the meantime, those who held on to Jordan Mason could get some payback for that. If he was released in your league, make him a waiver-wire priority. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (non-injury) fully participated in practice Thursday, Nov. 28.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey returned in Week 10, and he doesn't look quite like himself. Part of that may be the 49ers quarterback situation with Brandon Allen filling in for an injured Brock Purdy. Against the Bills on Sunday night, we like McCaffrey as a low-end RB1. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 15, and is not on the injury report for Week 11.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey wasn't eased into action in his return from Achilles tendinitis. He had 13 of the team's 15 running back carries. While the Buccaneers' defense held him in check on the ground, McCaffrey put together an RB1 outing thanks to his receiving production. He finished with 107 scrimmage yards and should improve as the season progresses. The next step is Sunday's game against the division-rival Seahawks in Seattle. While the 49ers did try to give him some rest in the first half last Sunday, with Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo combining for a handful of snaps, expect McCaffrey to handle his usual high-volume role going forward. He is the consensus RB1 overall on the Footballguys Week 11 Rankings. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 13 times for 39 yards in Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his season debut. He added six receptions for 68 yards on seven targets.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey wasn't eased into action in his first game back after missing the first eight weeks of the season with Achilles tendinitis. He had 13 of the team's 15 running back carries. While the Buccaneers' defense held him in check on the ground, McCaffrey put together an RB1 outing thanks to his receiving production. He finished with 107 scrimmage yards and should get better as the season progresses. At 5-4, the 49ers remain in the mix in the NFC West, but the next three games -- against Seattle, Green Bay, and Buffalo -- will likely determine if there's any hope for one final playoff push. Either way, expect McCaffrey to handle his usual high-volume role going forward. |

The 49ers opened the practice window for Christian McCaffrey on Monday, increasing the possibility that the running back hits his target return date of Week 10. General Manager John Lynch expressed optimism about McCaffrey's availability for Sunday's game against the Bucs. "Christian's passed every part of the test in our plan," Lynch said via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. "Over the bye week, he stayed here with our trainers. How do you come to work on the bye week? You come when you've got guys like him working out, and you want to see it. I sat up in my office and watched from afar. He looks great. He's responded well."
Footballguys view: McCaffrey has not played this season, going on injured reserve Sept. 14 with bilateral Achilles tendinitis. McCaffrey's four practices this week will ultimately determine his readiness for game action. His last game was the Super Bowl in February. We'll continue to follow his progress closely. |
