Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield, TB 'on collision course for franchise tag'    Tue Aug 4, 04:26 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers are on a 'collision course for franchise tag' which would pay him at least $47 million in 2027, in the opinion of ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: The past three Bucs who received the tag -- Antoine Winfield Jr., Chris Godwin Jr., and Shaquil Barrett -- all got long-term deals eventually. Mayfield knows this is a possibility and isn't afraid of it. Fowler notes the tag could also be a way for the Bucs to facilitate a trade to a QB-needy team, acquiring draft capital to select the quarterback of the future. Until then, the Bucs know Mayfield has been at his best when slighted, highly motivated, and riled up. It's worked for them in the past, and Mayfield definitely has something to prove this year.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield disappointed with offer    Thu Jul 30, 01:48 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield said he is disappointed that the Buccaneers only offered him a two-year contract extension and that the team did not offer anything close to the $50 million per season he was looking for in the negotiations.

Footballguys view: Mayfield is coming off a down season, and without a new contract he's got a chance to break the bank with a bounce-back year. The Buccaneers were unwilling to commit to Mayfield in terms of annual salary and contract length. Anything is possible, but it seems like this could be Mayfield's final year with the Buccaneers. Mayfield has a current ADP of QB18 (11.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield done negotiating extension for '26    Wed Jul 29, 12:41 AM

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield and the team have not come to an agreement on a contract extension, according to a Tuesday, July 28 report. The sides are done negotiating and Mayfield will play this season under his current contract.

Footballguys view: Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times and Greg Auman of FOX Sports both report that the talks have finished with the quarterback reporting to training camp on Tuesday. Mayfield will now have a cap number of $39.975 million in 2026 on the last year of his deal. Depending on how the season goes, the Buccaneers could franchise tag Mayfield in the 2027 offseason. That would put Mayfield in a position to earn $47.97 million on the one-year franchise tender. Whatever the case, Mayfield is once again betting on himself, a tactic that's worked well for him in the past.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield talks not close    Tue Jul 28, 11:43 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield and the team haven't made significant progress on a contract extension as his self-imposed deadline nears Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Mayfield, who is set to report to training camp on Tuesday without a new contract, has publicly stated that he does not want to continue negotiations past the start of camp. After signing a three-year, $100 million deal during the 2024 offseason, there's one year left on his current contract. It was recently reported that Mayfield would be willing to play under the franchise tag in 2027, which would be a one-year deal worth $47.97 million. But that, of course, depends on the Buccaneers electing to tag him. We'll continue to monitor, but there's no immediate fantasy impact.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield hoping to sign extension    Sun Jul 26, 11:33 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield would like to have a contract extension finalized by the time veterans report to training camp Tuesday, July 28, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. However, Fowler believes this is an 'artificial deadline' and that intensified negotiations could continue beyond this point if necessary. Mayfield is entering the final season of a three-year, $100 million deal.

Footballguys view: Most expect a deal to get done, but we shouldn't interpret a lack of a deal before camp opens as a bad sign for his future with the team. Mayfield has already had to bet on himself many times in his career and would probably look at going into the season without an extension as an opportunity to make even more on his eventual new deal with the team.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield says he played hurt from Week 2 on last year    Mon Jul 13, 02:39 PM

Via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Baker Mayfield reveals in the upcoming season of Quarterback that, in 2025, he played with a sprained MCL and PCL in his knee from Week 2 on. Mayfield also had a "bad biceps contusion" in his throwing arm, and he injured the shoulder of his non-throwing arm.

Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com notes, if Mayfield had a knee injury for that much of the season, it didn't show up in the injury reports. "Knee" wasn't listed at all until Week 8. It underscores the fact that the NFL's injury-reporting rules don't contain nearly enough information. Sometimes, players don't tell the team about their injuries. Sometimes, players get treatment away from the team's facility. Whatever the case, Mayfield finished last year as QB12 -- although his points per game ranked 19th. Mayfield is being drafted as QB20.

Buccaneers | No rush on a new contract for Baker Mayfield    Tue Jul 7, 12:38 PM

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield said early last month that he and the team were not close to an agreement on a new contract and that "we're not doing contract stuff" after the start of training camp. The Bucs report to camp on July 28, and there doesn't appear to be much change in where things stand for Mayfield. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that "a lot of work needs to be done" before any agreement is reached with the quarterback.

Footballguys view: That is also reportedly the case for defensive tackle Vita Vea. Mayfield is in the third year of a three-year, $100 million deal, while Vea is set to make $17 million during the 2026 season. Garafolo adds that the Bucs feel "no rush" to wrap up negotiations with either player at the moment. That urgency could grow with the window before camp getting shorter, but it remains to be seen if all involved will find the middle ground needed to reach the finish line. Meanwhile, based on his QB20 ADP, fantasy investors are also lukewarm on Mayfield.

Buccaneers | Coach endorses Baker Mayfield    Sun Jun 14, 06:11 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield has been 'all business' amid contract extension talks, according to head coach Todd Bowles, and Bowles said there is 'absolutely no question' that he wants Mayfield to stay with the Buccaneers long term.

Footballguys view: This is a story worth monitoring because Mayfield has been good as a Buc, but $50+ million a year good? Mayfield is 31 and if his play is declining (he had a rough second half of the season, but the whole offense did, including with his and other key players suffering injuries), then committing to him long term would be a mistake. The Bucs don't have a quarterback they have bene developing on the roster, but they did sign UDFA Jalon Daniels, who is a favorite of NFL Films legend Greg Cosell.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield unlikely to hold out    Sat Jun 6, 10:53 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield is not likely to stage a holdout from mandatory minicamp, which begins on June 16, even though the two sides are not believed to be close to finalizing a contract extension. According to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler, discussions are in the early stages but Mayfield will not negotiate a long-term deal once training camp has started.

Footballguys view: The two sides are not close on a contract agreement, and Mayfield seems to have a self-imposed deadline for negotiations to be done before training camp. With the deadline closer to August, there's no need for Mayfield to hold out during mandatory minicamp. While he may not be quite what he used to be, Mayfield is still an above-average starter, and he should get compensated as such.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield not close on contract    Fri Jun 5, 11:07 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield said he and the team aren't close in contract negotiations, and talks will end once the season begins.

Footballguys view: In the final year of his deal, Mayfield is looking for a new long-term contract. Mayfield is entering this season without WR Mike Evans, and he's coming off a season where he had 3,693 yards passing with 26 passing touchdowns. He may never get back to the 40-plus touchdown guy he was a couple of years ago, but Mayfield is a solid starter who should be able to get appropriate compensation.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jalon Daniels, an undrafted free agent, has turned head in the team's offseason program.   Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield has issues with fumbles    Sun Jan 25, 06:43 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield fumbled 11 times during the 2025 regular season, which was tied for the most in the NFL.

Footballguys view: In the first half of the 2025 season in 2025, Mayfield looked like an MVP candidate. But he was hampered by left and right shoulder injuries and a knee injury down the stretch. The Bucs' playcalling also took a step backward in 2025, with Josh Grizzard not able to fill the void left by Liam Coen. The hope is that new OC Zach Robinson, who was serving as passing game coordinator and QB coach for the Rams when Mayfield arrived in Los Angeles late in the 2022 season -- when Mayfield had instant success -- will change things for the better.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield limited in practice    Tue Dec 30, 04:00 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield (knee, shoulder) was limited in practice on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: Mayfield has been dealing with a left (non-throwing) shoulder injury since earlier in the season. At this point, Mayfield doesn't appear to be at risk of missing Saturday's game against the Panthers, which may determine the winner of the NFC South. Mayfield has completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 3,490 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions so far in 2025. He's rushed for 351 yards with a TD as well. Mayfield is QB12 on the season, but his 16.3 points per game rank 18th at the position.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield throw for 145 yards, TD    Sun Dec 21, 07:07 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield completed 18-of-26 passes for 145 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers. He ran four times for 49 yards, too.

Footballguys view: The Panthers defense was in Mayfield's face all day and rarely let him get clean looks or time to throw downfield. He wasn't a good play this week but will be a great play against Miami next week for teams that don't have a clearcut QB1. The Bucs can still make the playoffs with wins over the Dolphins and Panthers in the last two games.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes expected to have surgery in coming days    Mon Dec 15, 02:21 AM

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee in the closing minutes of Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Chargers, a result that ended Kansas City's playoff hopes. Mahomes is expected to have surgery in the coming days. He will miss the team's offseason program, and his availability for the start of next season is now in question.

Footballguys view: Mahomes underwent an MRI after the game that confirmed the injury. "Don't know why this had to happen," Mahomes wrote on social media. "And not going to lie, [it] hurts. But all we can do now is [trust] in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you, Chiefs kingdom, for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I [will] be back stronger than ever." Mahomes, 30, has managed to stay free of long-term injuries during his NFL career. Gardner Minshew will take over as the Chiefs starting quarterback.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield getting better    Sat Dec 6, 03:13 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield (shoulder) said that his shoulder is getting better. '(It is) still one of those things that's going to take time, so hopefully I can put two of those in a row together,' Mayfield said Friday, Dec. 5.

Footballguys view: The shoulder injury comes down to pain tolerance, and Mayfield is one of the toughest quarterbacks in the league. He's been limited in practice this week, but he's going to play through the injury just like he did last week. The Buccaneers are going to be without Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan, but we still like Mayfield as a low-end QB1 against the Saints in Week 14.

Hopefully by Week 15, Mayfield will have his full complement of receivers back, helping him regain the upside that made him a plug-and-play QB1 last year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield completed 18 of his 28 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown and rushed six times for 27 yards in a 20-17 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 13.

Footballguys view: Any concerns about Mayfield's sprained AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder were minimized. It wasn't a huge passing day, but Mayfield made plays with his legs, didn't turn the ball over, and was particularly effective throwing on the move. It was an encouraging performance given the circumstances. We'll be expecting a healthier Mayfield to turn it up a notch against the Saints in Week 14.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield questionable    Fri Nov 28, 04:11 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield (shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 28, but is listed as questionable for Week 13.

Footballguys view: A DNP to LP to FP is the progression we want to see from a questionable player, and most signs indicate he's trending toward playing. Mayfield has proven tough as nails throughout his career. He left last week's game after attempting a deep heave before halftime, but has since logged a couple of practices and hopes to suit up. The efficiency that fueled his strong fantasy finish last season has unfortunately cratered. He's still worth a look in two-quarterback and superflex leagues, but in single-quarterback formats, he's just a back-end streamer for now.

Buccaneers | Baker Mayfield's status uncertain for Week 13    Tue Nov 25, 12:39 AM

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield's (shoulder) MRI only showed an AC joint sprain, but his status for Week 13 is still uncertain.

Footballguys view: While Mayfield's status for Sunday's game against the Cardinals remains uncertain, there are no long-term injury concerns. Bowles said earlier Monday that losing Mayfield would be a "big loss." Teddy Bridgewater is standing by, but the sprain is said to be low-grade and Mayfield has never missed a start in his three seasons with the Bucs, starting all 45 regular-season games thus far. The last time he missed a game due to injury was with the Carolina Panthers in 2022, when he suffered a high ankle sprain. We'll be watching for more.

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield did not play the second half of Sunday night's loss to the Rams with a left shoulder injury. Head coach Todd Bowles had a minor update on Mayfield in his postgame press conference. "Right now he has a shoulder sprain," Bowles said. "He'll get an MRI tomorrow."

Footballguys view: Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater came in and played the second half in relief of Mayfield. He threw his first regular-season passes since the 2022 season. If Mayfield is sidelined for a while, Bowles feels comfortable with Bridgewater behind center. "Very confident in what Teddy can do with a full week of practice," Bowles said, "Taking every snap and every play. We think he'll be fine." The Buccaneers host the Cardinals on Sunday in Week 13.
