Giants | Eli Manning not on retired list    Thu Jan 23, 12:27 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is retiring, but he won't be eligible to be placed on the reserve/retired list due to his expiring contract this offseason.

Footballguys view: That means Manning will be eligible to sign and play for the Giants or any other team in 2020, free of restriction and/or having to go through waivers. Keep this in mind if some team needs QB help down the 2020 stretch.

Giants | Eli Manning could call it quits    Fri Dec 27, 08:54 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning will 'most likely' retire after this season, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

Footballguys view: Manning doesn't want to be a backup quarterback. There's no team out there likely to pick him up as a starter...even as a 'bridge' quarterback to a younger player. He could retire as a two-time Super Bowl champion with only one team in his career.

Giants | Eli Manning returning as starter    Sat Dec 7, 12:47 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning will get the start in Week 14 on Monday, Dec. 9, against the the Philadelphia Eagles with QB Daniel Jones ruled out with an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: We are interested to see Manning back out there for the Giants...although Giants fans may not be as excited. It could be a train wreck for the Giants offense against the Eagles on Monday night. Manning hasn't played since Week 2 and he wasn't good to start the season. We just want to see if there's any sort of spark from Manning upon his return.

Giants | Eli Manning expected to start on MNF    Thu Dec 5, 02:48 AM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is 'very likely' to start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, Dec. 9, according to head coach Pat Shurmur.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Manning's return makes the Monday night game a little more interesting. Sure, he's not the player he used to be but the Giants may want to 'win one for Eli' and turn in a spirited performance (or it could be a dumpster fire). Checking down to Saquon Barkley is going to be a thing again, so adjust all expectations for the Giants offense accordingly.

Giants | Eli Manning benched    Tue Sep 17, 10:19 AM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning was benched in favor of rookie QB Daniel Jones for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Manning doesn't have anyone to blame but himself. He's clearly not the same player he used to be and now has to transition into a backup role behind the rookie Jones. We expect Manning to be a good teammate and a good mentor for the young quarterback. Even if Jones struggles, the Giants should stick with him as the starter since he's clearly their franchise quarterback of the future...and the future starts now.

Giants | NYG won't commit to Eli Manning in Week 3    Mon Sep 16, 12:33 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning was not immediately named the starter for Week 3 by head coach Pat Shurmur while meeting with reporters Monday, Sept. 16.

Footballguys view: Manning's days are numbered as the Giants starter. They'll eventually turn things over to rookie Daniel Jones and it could be sooner rather than later. Stay tuned.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning went 26-for-45 for 250 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.

Giants | Eli Manning to start while team is in contention    Sat Sep 7, 06:28 AM

Multiple New York Giants officials have said that QB Eli Manning will remain the starter as long as the team is in the playoff race.

Footballguys view: That may not be that long. The Giants have to get off to a winning start and stay on that track if Manning is going to stay the starter. We just don't see that happening for them, especially with their current roster construct and the division they play in. Rookie first-round pick Daniel Jones should be starting around the midway point of the season if not sooner.

Giants | Eli Manning worked with pitching coach    Tue Jul 30, 08:49 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning worked with a private pitching coach this offseason at the suggestion of former MLB All-Star Al Leiter. 'I feel like it's paid off,' Manning said. 'I'm throwing the ball well, and arm is staying strong and I'm not losing anything. In training camp, sometimes you'd have four practices in a row, and you're not used to that; you can see your arm getting tired. But still feeling strong.'

Footballguys view: Manning is trying to hold off rookie Daniel Jones for the starting quarterback job. He should be able to begin the season as the starter but if the Giants falter or struggle then we will see them turn to the future at the position in Jones.

Giants | Eli Manning not in QB competition    Mon Jul 22, 03:07 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is not competing with rookie first-round QB Daniel Jones for the starting job during training camp, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Footballguys view: This after a lot of buzz that Jones looked better than Manning - or at least more promising - in OTAs. Manning might be the starter Week 1, but it seems clear that he will sit if the season is lost, and it's possible that he declines enough to force the team's hand before that. This will still be a situation to watch this summer to presage in-season developments.

Giants | Eli Manning in no rush to retire    Mon Jul 8, 02:06 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning turned 38 in January, making him the third-oldest quarterback in the league. However, he appears to have no designs on retiring anytime soon.'You take it year by year. I've been blessed going into my 16th year. That's been a blessing in itself. I love what I'm doing. I love the work that goes into it. You never know when it's going to be your last year or when it's going to be the end for you, so you try to take advantage of the years you're here and enjoy every moment. ... I'm not rushing into retirement. ... I still love being around the guys and the teammates and playing this game. I'm going to play it for as long as I think I can hang with these guys,' Manning said.

Footballguys view: Manning perhaps has one more year left as the Giants starter. Daniel Jones was a top-10 pick in the 2019 NFL draft, and he is clearly the quarterback of the future. Manning is in the final year of his contract and is likely to have to move on if he wants to keep starting in 2020.

Giants | Eli Manning dismisses QB competition    Fri Jun 28, 06:35 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning said he does not believes he is in a competition with QB Daniel Jones for the starting job. 'I mean no, I don't feel like it's a competition,' Manning said. 'I feel like I've got to do my job and I've got to compete every day and try to get better every day. That's the way it's been my whole life and that's just the way I've always approached practice every day to improve, to earn my place on the team, to earn the respect of the teammates and do it each year.' Manning said he has no problem helping Jones improve.

Footballguys view: Manning has gotten a lot of deference from the current Giants regime, but observers said Jones looked better than him in the spring and he'll be on the spot to reverse that momentum in camp. Either way, the Giants will be one of the bottom ten teams in quarterback play this year.

Giants | NYG could carry two QBs on roster    Sun Jun 16, 11:16 AM

The New York Giants may decide to carry only two quarterbacks on their 2019 roster if the coaching staff is convinced that QB Daniel Jones would be able to capably fill in for QB Eli Manning when called upon. Previously, it had been believed that Kyle Lauletta and Alex Tanney would be fighting for the No. 3 quarterback spot on the roster but there's a possibility that neither player will make the team. If the Giants opt to keep three QBs, Tanney is believed to have a slight edge over Lauletta.

Giants | Open QB competition with Giants?    Tue Jun 11, 12:45 PM

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said Tuesday, June 11, that rookie QB Daniel Jones is very much in contention to start Week 1 and is 'constantly' weighing scenarios. 'We're gonna play the very best player. I know we're dancing around the words here, but right now Eli (Manning) is getting ready to have a great year and Daniel is getting ready to play.' Shurmur said. 'We'll just see what happens.'

Footballguys view: The word out of Giants camp is that Manning looks like he's done. Jones may not be a world-beater at this point in his career, but he may be a better option than a fading Manning. We'll see if Jones can overtake Manning during training camp and the preseason.

Giants | Daniel Jones already making push to start?    Fri Jun 7, 02:38 PM

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones reportedly outplayed Eli Manning during the team's recent minicamp, and it wasn't really close, in the opinion of Bleacher Report's Mike Tanier, who stated Jones was 'sharper, more accurate and more willing and able to challenge the defense with difficult downfield throws.'

Footballguys view: The Giants are irrationally committed to Manning, but once Jones superior play, even at this early point in his career, becomes apparent, they might have to make the rational move. Jones starting won't be great for the Giants fantasy prospects, but it will still likely be better than Manning taking the field.

Giants | Eli Manning should remain the starter    Fri Apr 26, 01:11 AM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is expected to be the team's starter entering the 2019 season, an arrangement that head coach Pat Shurmur indicated was the goal with Manning's job being to win enough games to keep rookie QB Daniel Jones off the field.

Footballguys view: Dave Gettleman said Eli could play for three more years. The reality is that is probably better for the Giants to let Jones sit for a year, even if the team is losing. He needs his processor to speed up to make it in the NFL and time to prep on the sidelines watching what he is in for would be helpful.

Giants | 2 more seasons for Eli Manning?    Sun Mar 31, 12:21 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is heading into the final season of his contract in 2019 but could remain with the team through 2020, a possibility that Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch recently said they were open to.

Footballguys view: This sentiment could lean the Giants away from any of the quarterbacks available in the 2019 NFL draft. They could wait on taking a quarterback this year, extend Manning for one more season then draft their heir apparent in a much better 2020 crop.

Giants | Pat Shurmur says Eli Manning will return    Wed Feb 27, 01:36 PM

Updating ongoing reports, New York Giants QB Eli Manning will return to the franchise in 2019, head coach Pat Shurmur said Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the NFL Scouting Combine. 'Well, I think Eli can help us win games, and he proved when the players around him starting playing better that he can play at a very high level and help us win games, so at this point I want Eli back,' Shurmur said. 'He's back.'

Footballguys view: The Giants just aren't letting go of Manning. Perhaps they still take a quarterback, like Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins, at no.6 overall in the 2019 NFL draft but Manning should still begin the season as the starter.

Giants | Eli Manning could help groom successor    Sun Jan 27, 12:35 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is likely to return for another season and help groom his successor, likely a high-round rookie draft pick.

Footballguys view: The Giants started prepping us for the return of Eli with many reports that he could stick around. They may not draft a quarterback at six, which is more ammo for the keep Eli movement, even though it would doom the team to another mediocre season.

Giants | Eli Manning may be on his way out    Thu Jan 24, 03:23 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning's agent has already said he expects Manning to return to the Giant in 2019, but Spotrac considers it a 'longshot.'

Footballguys view: We'd be surprised if Manning stayed with the Giants in 2019. He'll cost the Giants $11.2 million in dead cap at 38 years old. Expect the Giants to look at a quarterback (Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins?) with their first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

Giants | Agent expects Eli Manning back with Giants    Mon Jan 21, 07:21 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is expected to return to the Giants next season, according to his agent Tom Condon.

Footballguys view: That's nice and all but we don't know how the Giants stick with Manning...especially since most expect them to select a quarterback in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. Condon said he has not had any talks with the Giants about the possibility of them releasing Manning.

Giants | Eli Manning may not start    Wed Jan 2, 01:27 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning's future with the Giants is cloudy as general manager Dave Gettleman was noncommittal on Manning being the starter in 2019. 'I'm committed to making the best decision in the interest of the Giants. We're in the evaluation process,' Gettleman said.

Footballguys view: Gettleman is being brutally honest about the situation. The Giants passed on taking a quarterback last year in the first round, instead opting for star RB Saquon Barkley. This year with the 6th overall pick, they may choose to go with a rookie quarterback. Manning's time as the Giants starter is coming to a close.

Giants | Eli Manning set to start Week 17    Mon Dec 24, 12:42 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning will make the start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17, according to head coach Pat Shurmur.

Footballguys view: The Giants don't have any other choice really. Rookie Kyle Lauletta has been inactive the last couple of weeks and they're not going to be in a trick shot competition ...as that's the only way backup Alex Tanney would be viable as a starter (seriously, look up his trick shots on YouTube).

New York Giants QB Eli Manning completed 25 of his 33 passes for 309 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16. He also added a rushing score.

Giants | Eli Manning to make another start    Mon Dec 17, 01:08 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning will remain in the starting lineup in Week 16 versus the Indianapolis Colts, according to head coach Pat Shurmur.

Footballguys view: Shurmur believes that Manning gives them the best chance to win. The Giants had rookie QB Kyle Lauletta as a healthy scratch on Sunday and it doesn't seem like they'll turn to him at any point this season. Shurmur also said that Manning has 'years' left as a starter in the league. That's nice he said that, but we still expect the Giants to upgrade the quarterback position this offseason.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning completed 14 of his 22 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-16 win over the Washington Redskins in Week 14.

Footballguys view: Everything came easy for the Giants in this game, but it was so easy that Manning's attempts stayed low and ceiling was low with that number. Even without Odell Beckham, Manning was a plus for anyone that used him as a QB2/Superflex. If Beckham can play, we'll consider him in that role next week against the Titans.

Giants | Eli Manning to remain the starter for now    Mon Dec 3, 12:44 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning will start again in Week 14 versus the Washington Redskins, according to head coach Pat Shurmur, who added there is a 'good chance' Kyle Lauletta will be his backup again this week.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning went 30-for-47 for 316 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Washington Redskins in Week 8.

Footballguys view: The touchdown was meaningless and came at the very end of the loss. Manning is lower tier streamer as long as he starts and only because of the quality of his weapons.

Giants | Co-owner: Eli Manning decision up to coaches    Tue Oct 16, 12:20 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning was the subject of a question posed Tuesday, Oct. 16, to team owner John Mara at the league's fall meetings. 'When you're 1-5, it generally means everybody has to play better,' Mara told NFL Network. Mara added, though, that he will leave it up to the team's coaches as to whether a quarterback change is needed.

Footballguys view: Manning has become 'Captain Checkdown' this season for the Giants. They could turn to rookie Kyle Lauletta eventually but for now they stick with the two-time Super Bowl Champion. Against a bad Falcons defense on Monday night in Week 7, Manning could look better than he has in most other games this year.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning completed 24 of his 43 passes for 281 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in a 34-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6. He was also sacked four times.
