Colts | Daniel Jones in the lead Tue Jun 24, 11:20 AM
Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones has built a significant lead over QB Anthony Richardson for the starting quarterback job, according to The Athletic's James Boyd.
Footballguys view: Considering Richardson has been missing time with a shoulder injury, this shouldn't come as a huge shock. Jones has his flaws, but he's at least proven capable of keeping a team afloat and providing his pass catchers with enough volume to be relevant in fantasy. Richardson has not. While Richardson would be the more exciting quarterback, Jones might be the one we want to see if we're investing in Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, and Tyler Warren. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones has performed well during the mandatory minicamp this week and has picked up the offense very well, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: Don't scoff at the possibility of Jones having fantasy value this year. He was QB10 a few years back with the Giants on the strength of his running ability, and he'll have a lot better receivers than he had back then. Jones might have also benefitted from a few months to learn from QB guru Kevin O'Connell when he was with the Vikings. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones has an 'ideal opportunity' to show the team he can be the starting quarterback during this week's mandatory minicamp, in the opinion of ESPN's Stephen Holder, who notes it 'offers a chance to build some continuity with his receivers and offensive linemen in full-squad workouts.' Jones is set to compete with QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder), who will miss the entire camp due to a shoulder injury, for the starting job, but Jones should be in line to get most, if not all, of the first-team reps here.
Footballguys view: The Colts wanted a quarterback competition this offseason, but Richardson's aggravated shoulder injury likely ended hopes of that at minicamp. That injury has already given Jones an edge in the QB battle. This week offers a chance to build some continuity with his receivers and offensive linemen in full-squad workouts, as Jones won't be sharing first-team snaps as planned. |

Indianapolis Colts QBs Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones are engaging in an 'open competition' where both players will split reps during organized team activities, according to head coach Shane Steichen.'We're breaking down the reps. They are both getting one reps. They're both getting two reps. I think through OTAs, we've got nine good practices. They'll both get about 170 reps a piece with those guys, with the ones and twos, and we'll flip-flop them. You guys were out there today. You saw how it worked, and that's how it's going to go. ... We have like first- (and) second-down day, then we have a third-down day. So we don't want one guy getting all the third-down reps with the ones. So, we're going to flip it that way, and then we go to a red zone day. It's the same reason,' Steichen said.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Colts have been saying for some time that both quarterbacks are going to have a chance at the starting job. Richardson is their former first-round pick, and he still has incredible upside because of his physical tools. Jones, a former first-round pick of the Giants, has athleticism too and more starting experience. We'll see this battle shake out in training camp. |

The Minnesota Vikings are exploring alternate options for acquiring a veteran quarterback, since it now appears unlikely that QB Sam Darnold will return to the club for the 2025 season, according to multiple sources. One such possibility is re-signing impending free-agent QB Daniel Jones, who is also receiving interest from other NFL teams.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins and Minnesota Vikings QB Daniel Jones could be options for the Cleveland Browns this offseason if they look to add a veteran quarterback, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: The Browns wanted to add a quarterback to compete with Deshaun Watson for the starting job in 2025. But after Waston re-tore his Achilles and underwent a second surgery, the Browns need a starter. Cousins and Jones are just two of the players likely to be available. Cousins remains under contract with the Falcons, but most observers expect them to move on from the veteran this offseason. |

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB Daniel Jones signed a one-year deal that will pay him $375,000 for the rest of the season, per source on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Footballguys view: Jones will begin his football rehab under the guidance of Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell. He will be a primary backup for Sam Darnold as the Vikings make what they hope is a deep postseason push. |

Free-agent QB Daniel Jones (Giants) is expected to sign with the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Jones failed as the starter for the Giants, and now he gets a chance with a Super Bowl contender as a backup. He begins his time with Minnesota on the practice squad, but we imagine Jones will soon be the primary backup to Sam Darnold. |

Free-agent QB Daniel Jones (Giants) has eliminated the Las Vegas Raiders from his consideration, per sources on Monday, Nov. 25.
Footballguys view: The Giants released Jones last week, and he cleared waivers on Monday, officially becoming a free agent. NFL insider Ian Rapoport named the Vikings a "team to watch" to add him to their roster. Rapoport named the Vikings, Raiders, 49ers, and Ravens as possible teams to watch out for, although this report by Schultz cuts that list down. In addition, Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell downplayed his team's interest. Nonetheless, based on Rapoport's outlook, Jones will want to sign with a contender sooner rather than later. |

Former Giants QB Daniel Jones has cleared waivers, sources tell NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. He's now free to sign elsewhere.
Footballguys view: Reports on Sunday suggested up to 10 teams had an interest in Jones, who was waived by the Giants on Saturday. The list reportedly included at least one team that would consider starting him immediately -- with some speculating the Raiders might fit that bill. Jones, meanwhile, is reportedly interested in signing with a playoff contender -- with Minnesota and Baltimore mentioned as possibilties, so a starting role might not be his priority. We'll continue to monitor. |

The Dallas Cowboys are not interested in signing free-agent QB Daniel Jones (Giants), according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys are trudging through the rest of the 2024 season with Cooper Rush and Trey Lance. For the time being, the Cowboys are focused on winning games and Jerry Jones believes Rush gives them the best chance to do that. If that changes and they want to evaluate a young quarterback, then Lance may get a chance to start later in the year. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones requested and was granted his release Friday, Nov. 22.
Footballguys view: Jones could choose to sign somewhere he has a chance to start like Dallas, or he could try to catch on as a backup on a likely playoff team. He's still rosterable in superflex/2QB leagues on this news. The Giants weren't going to let him do anything to protect from an injury guarantee from kicking in, so this makes sense from Jones perspective. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones is expected to be replaced by QB Tommy DeVito in Week 12.
Footballguys view: The benching of Jones starts the process of the last-place Giants moving on from the quarterback they signed to a four-year, $160 million deal less than two years ago. DeVito will start in Jones' place beginning Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium. The Giants (2-8) are coming off their bye week and have veteran Drew Lock, who has served as Jones' backup for every game this season. DeVito averaged 25 pass attempts in six starts last season, and Darius Slayton led the team with 15 receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown over that span. We'll have more on this as the week progresses. |

The New York Giants have benched the struggling Daniel Jones and are expected to name Tommy DeVito as their new starting quarterback, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: The benching of Jones starts the process of the last-place Giants moving on from the quarterback they signed to a four-year, $160 million deal less than two years ago. Jones has struggled since winning a playoff game after the 2022 season and signing his contract in March 2023, with the Giants going 3-13 in his 16 starts over the past two seasons. He has 10 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, including two costly picks deep in Carolina territory during New York's 20-17 overtime loss in Germany. Jones, 27, has thrown two touchdown passes and four interceptions in his past five games. He also failed to connect with open wide receivers on a flea-flicker against the Panthers, sending head coach Brian Daboll into a visible tizzy. He went down the sideline yelling, and his arms flailing in disgust. The Giants, 32nd in the NFL in scoring at 15.6 points per game, are in line for one of the top picks in next year's draft, which presumably will go toward a quarterback. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones may keep the starting job for a few more weeks, per sources on Friday, Nov. 15.

Brian Daboll was noncommittal on Daniel Jones and whether he is the starting quarterback post-bye. The coach said they'll be evaluating the team on the bye week.
Footballguys view: The Giants are 2-8 for the second season with five straight losses. As ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan suggests, a change at quarterback is the obvious choice, especially after Daboll benched Jones four weeks ago. Jones has an injury guarantee in his contract that must be a factor down the stretch, and he's not playing well. He missed a wide-open Malik Nabers on the opening drive and threw two costly interceptions deep in Carolina territory in Sunday's loss. Raanan added: "It seems to be over after six years as the starter." Drew Lock would be the starter if a change is made. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones went 22-for-37 with 190 yards and two interceptions in Week 10's game against the Carolina Panthers. He also had 26 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown on seven carries.
Footballguys view: Jones was terrible in the first half, including missing two open receivers on a flea flicker. He was bad enough that some wondered if he would get benched at halftime. Jones bounced back to lead a long drive late to send the game to overtime. He was still a poor play against the worst defense in the league. We might have seen his last start as a Giant as the team heads into their bye pondering their options. |
Daniel Jones player page
Daniel Jones remains the starting QB for Sunday's game against the Panthers in Germany, head coach Brian Daboll said. Daboll added he won't change anything with the practice reps at the position.
Footballguys view: Sunday's performance was most notable for Jones being the first starting quarterback since at least 1991 to have zero or fewer pass yards and a passing touchdown in the first half of a game. Jones was better in the second half, going 16-of-20 for 174 yards with passing and rushing touchdowns, but his play has been far from ideal. Drew Lock is Jones' backup. Remember, the team has a Week 11 bye, so they can hope for improvement against league's worst defense in Carolina this weekend and if they don't get it, they can use the next two weeks, including the off week, to adjust their offense. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones went 20-for-26 for 174 yards and two touchdowns against the Washington Commanders in Week 9. He also rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown on seven carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Jones had his first home touchdown pass or run in his last seven games, and actually ended up accounting for three touchdowns in his best fantasy showing of the season. It remains to be seen how long the Giants will continue to start him with a 2025 injury guarantee on the line, but at least this week's result makes him a viable QB2/Superflex or spot start in 1QB leagues against the Panthers next week. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones will remain the starting quarterback, head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Monday, Oct. 21.
Footballguys view: After reviewing the film of Sunday's loss to the Eagles, Daboll reiterated what he said immediately after the game. The coach believes Jones gives the Giants their best chance to win, and the issues in Sunday's loss were collective, not solely on Jones. The Giants will play on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers next Monday night. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed 14-of-21 passes for 99 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and he ran five time for just 20 yards, and he was sacked seven times. QB Drew Lock came on to finish up the blowout loss, completing 3-of-8 passes for six yards.
Footballguys view: Jones was impotent despite the return of Malik Nabers. His line was getting beaten all day and leaving Jones hung out to dry for sacks. The Giants offense is unpredictable week-to-week, but it seems likely that they won't have much success against the Steelers next week. Jones is tough to trust in 1QB leagues even if you are desperate. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones connected on 29 of his 40 passing attempts for 281 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception in a five-point loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4. In addition, Jones ran the ball four times for three yards.
Footballguys view: Jones was efficient and accurate on short passes, but consistently underthrew receivers open deep, which led to the loss and underwhelming fantasy output. He's not in danger of losing his job, but this performance makes you wonder if Drew Lock can hit on some of the passes than Jones is missing. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed 24-of-34 passes for 236 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, while running eight times for 20 yards.
Footballguys view: The Browns vaunted defense was very beatable with Myles Garrett playing on two bum wheels and leaving the game due to injury twice. Jones has played well in each of the last two weeks, and he has some value in superflex leagues. Thursday, he'll face a Cowboys defense that has only looked good against Deshaun Watson. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed 22-of-42 passes for 186 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions, including a pick-six, in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings. He also added six rushes for 15 yards.
Footballguys view: Jones' showing was poor enough that head coach Brian Daboll was asked after the game if he's thinking about a quarterback change. He's not there yet. "We're gonna watch everything. That's not in my mind," Daboll said at his press conference. As Profootballtalk.com notes, the Giants are in Washington next weekend, and another bad outing against a divisional foe won't do anything to sell the idea that Jones will wind up as the right answer for the offense. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones did not have any limitations in the team's joint practice with the Detroit Lions on Monday, Aug. 5.
Footballguys view: Jones was feeling good enough to incite a scuffle during Monday's session. Now Jones is ready to put his surgically repaired ACL through a final test if the Giants want. After Monday's session, Jones was asked if he would like to play in Thursday's preseason opener to test his knee against a live pass rush. "Yeah, I'd like to play," Jones said. "At the end of the day, that's coach's decision and I'll do whatever [Brian Daboll] thinks." Daboll deferred the decision until later in the week. |

According to ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan, Giants quarterback Caniel Jones is not expected to start on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The Giants veterans report to training camp on Tuesday (July 23). Their first practice is scheduled for Wednesday (July 24). Asked by Raanan on Sunday if he was fully cleared for practice, Jones expressed optimism. "Yeah, should be ready to go," he said.
Footballguys view: Jones expects to be full-go this week. He underwent surgery on a torn ACL in November and wasn't fully cleared in the spring, but Raanan reports Jones did not suffer any setbacks that would keep him from being ready for Day 1 of training camp. Whatever the case, the Giants have been adamant that Jones will be their starter Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium (barring any setbacks). Drew Lock, signed as a free agent this offseason, is standing by if not. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (knee) is not expected to be placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list when training camp begins.
Footballguys view: Good news for Jones here. He's said in a recent interview that he has had a "pretty smooth process" with "no real setbacks" returning from a torn ACL. If he's healthy, Jones is in line to start for the Giants. We'll see if Drew Lock can do anything to change the team's mind before the start of the regular season. We'll also see just how healthy Jones is returning from his knee injury. |

Daniel Jones is almost at the finish line for restarting his career. Jones said during an appearance on â€"Simms Complete†on the Bleav Podcast Network that he has had a â€"pretty smooth process†with â€"no real setbacks†returning from a torn ACL. â€"At this point,†Jones told father-son co-hosts Phil and Matt Simms, â€"I'm doing pretty much everything -- running, cutting, everything I need to do.â€
Footballguys view: Jones underwent surgery Nov. 22 to repair that torn ACL. Jones was a limited participant in the team's offseason program, and the Giants will likely be deliberate in handling his return to team drills at training camp. Once he is medically cleared for contact and can rejoin 11-on-11 drills, Jones will be playing to stake his claim to the job beyond 2024 and avoid becoming a cap casualty with two years remaining on his four-year, $160 million contract. The Giants are eight days from the first practice of training camp. We'll be following up as needed. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones is working out with several of the team's wide receivers this week.
Footballguys view: Jones is a forgotten man in fantasy circles after there was some optimism about his value going into last season. After some speculation that the Giants would start Drew Lock to avoid risking Jones getting hurt and locking in a big injury guarantee for 2025, it looks like this is Jones' offense. He did gain a true #1 receiver in Malik Nabers, but lost Saquon Barkley and Darren Waller in the offseason. Jones is going late enough in best ball drafts to be a viable upside QB3, and he could still have bye/injury backup value in redraft leagues. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones said he expects to be the starting quarterback for the Giants this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: Okay, that's great, but when is that going to happen? Jones may be replaced by Drew Lock at least to begin the 2024 season as he continues to recover from the knee injury that shortened his 2023 season. His ACL injury was last November, so being ready for Week 1 might be a stretch. We'll see what Jones can do (and can't do) in training camp. |

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (knee) expects to be ready for Week 1, he told reporters Thursday, May 23.
Footballguys view: Whether he will start Week 1 is yet to be seen. The team would have to pay out a hefty $23 million injury guarantee if Jones goes down with a serious injury. Drew Lock is a reasonable alternative and could beat Jones out in a camp/preseason competition. Even if Jones does start Week 1, there's a strong incentive for the team to bench him if they eventually fall out of playoff contention. |
