Texans | Jonathan Grimes has strong game    Mon Dec 30, 06:09 AM

Making his first-ever NFL start while filling in for Dennis Johnson, Houston Texans RB Jonathan Grimes rolled off team highs in rushing (50) and receiving yards (76). The 5-foot-10, 209-pound back from William & Mary also recorded the Texans' lone touchdown, via a 3-yard score with 9 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter. "I usually just hand the ball to the (referee). I told him ... 'I want to keep this one,' " said Grimes, who rushed 16 times and caught all six of his targeted passes. "It was my first one and I wanted to bring that home to my pops."

The Houston Texans have declared OG Alex Kupper, QB Case Keenum, OG Cody White, RB Dennis Johnson, WR DeVier Posey, LB Joe Mays, FB Toben Opurum inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Matt Schaub gets the start in what is surely his last game with the Texans. Jonathan Grimes will get a chance to show his wares for teams with Johnson and Deji Karim out this week.

Texans | Dennis Johnson questionable    Fri Dec 27, 07:03 PM

Houston Texans RB Dennis Johnson (hip) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 27, and is listed as questionable for Week 17.

Footballguys view: We're likely to see Jonathan Grimes in at starting running back for the Texans. Ray Graham is likely to be his primary backup.

Texans | Dennis Johnson sits out    Thu Dec 26, 06:50 PM

Houston Texans RB Dennis Johnson (hip) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 26.

Footballguys view: We're looking at Jonathan Grimes here, a guy to watch for in terms of deep dynasty leagues.

Texans | Dennis Johnson considered questionable    Mon Dec 23, 04:45 PM

Houston Texans RB Dennis Johnson (hip) is considered questionable for Week 17 because of a hip injury.

Footballguys view: Johnson wasn't impressive against the Broncos in Week 16. He's quick and agile, but gets swallowed up too easily because of his lack of size and tackle-breaking ability.

Texans | Ben Tate has another cracked rib    Wed Dec 18, 03:01 PM

Houston Texans RB Ben Tate (ribs) was put on the Injured Reserve Wednesday, Dec. 18, after suffering his fifth cracked rib. However, Tate tweeted that he doesn't have a cracked rib but instead re-injured his other ribs that hadn't healed. RB Dennis Johnson will start in Tate's place with RB Deji Karim serving as his backup.

Footballguys view: This explains the sudden move to Injured Reserve. Dennis Johnson definitely gets the start but remains a RB3, no more. His reps could be limited if Denver gets too far out in front.

Texans | Ben Tate placed on IR    Wed Dec 18, 01:57 PM

The Houston Texans have placed Ben Tate (ribs) on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: This is a stunner though with the season lost, it's not really surprising, just sudden. Time to break the glass on Dennis Johnson though he is no more than a RB3 against a Denver team which will decimate the Houston defense. He may not get a ton of opportunities.

Texans | Ben Tate still starter    Mon Nov 25, 06:52 PM

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said RB Ben Tate (ribs) will remain the team's starting running back even though RB Dennis Johnson rushed for more yards in the team's Week 12 game. Tate rushed for one yard on seven carries while Johnson rushed for 74 yards on 13 carries.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners have to drop expectations for Tate after his poor game against the Jaguars in Week 12. Johnson gets a slight bump in expectations going forward. We like Tate as a RB3/flex option for your fantasy team in Week 13 against the Patriots.

Texans | Dennis Johnson sees more work    Mon Nov 25, 08:05 AM

Houston Texans RB Dennis Johnson rushed 13 times for a season-high 74 yards in Week 12. RB Ben Tate had just seven carries for one yard, and the team liked the way Johnson looked running the ball. 'We had planned on playing DJ (Johnson) some, but when he went in and he just looked so good running the ball so we played him a little bit more,' head coach Gary Kubiak said.

Texans | Ben Tate probable    Fri Nov 8, 05:18 PM

Houston Texans RB Ben Tate (ribs) was limited during practice Friday, Nov. 8, and is listed as probable for Week 8.

Footballguys view: Consider Tate a decent RB2 going forward with Arian Foster's 2013 now in uncertain territory. As Tate's ribs heal and he gets more accustomed to playing with the injury, his value could go up against a schedule that includes two matchups against Jacksonville.

Texans | Arian Foster dealing with disc injury    Fri Nov 8, 02:56 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (back, hamstring) is reportedly dealing with a disc problem in his back. He'll receive treatment from a specialist in hopes of avoiding season-ending surgery.

Footballguys view: Ben Tate's value just took a leap, and Dennis Johnson should be owned in all deep leagues.

Texans | Arian Foster ruled out    Fri Nov 8, 02:19 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (back, hamstring) missed his third straight practice Friday, Nov. 8, and has been ruled out for Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals. Interim head coach Wade Phillips said Foster has seen multiple specialists for his back injury, but there is no timetable for his recovery. RB Ben Tate will start and is expected to see the bulk of the workload. RB Dennis Johnson is expected to spell Tate, and Houston is leaning toward using RB Deji Karim as the third running back.

Footballguys view: We might not see Foster again this year. With the Texans on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs are concerned, they are likely to err on the side of shutting Foster down.

Texans | Dennis Johnson could have bigger role    Thu Nov 7, 10:08 PM

Houston Texans RB Dennis Johnson could have a bigger role in the offense if RBs Arian Foster (back) and Ben Tate (ribs) are limited or miss the game.

Footballguys view: Johnson was competent hitting the hole hard in the zone blocking running game and he is also a good receiver out of the backfield. The Texans have two matchups with the Jaguars down the stretch, so he could be a good stash to hold in case he inherits the starting job by injury.

Texans | Ben Tate limited    Thu Nov 7, 06:09 PM

Houston Texans RB Ben Tate (ribs) was limited during practice Thursday, Nov. 7.

Footballguys view: Tate is very tough, already playing through four broken ribs. He should play but be careful about how much you expect from him--he looks like a decent flex play at most. Also Dennis Johnson is a decent stash for your bench in case Tate goes down due to the ribs.

Texans | Arian Foster misses practice    Wed Nov 6, 02:22 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (back) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 6, because of a back injury. Interim head coach Wade Phillips said Foster is meeting with doctors to have the injury diagnosed.

Footballguys view: This sounds like something that could be more than a one-week injury. Ben Tate's value is on the rise, and Dennis Johnson should be on your waiver wire speed dial if Tate goes down. Don't expect to have Foster this weekend, and if he does play, last week should remind you of the downside.

Texans | Four players signed    Mon Oct 28, 01:56 PM

The Houston Texans have signed free-agent LB Tavares Gooden (49ers) and LB Jeff Tarpinian (Panthers). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also signed RB Dennis Johnson off the Cleveland Browns' practice squad and practice squad RB Ray Graham to their active roster.

Footballguys view: Graham gets called up to the active roster due to the injuries to Arian Foster (hamstring) and Ben Tate (ribs). There's no word on how severe either injury is, but the team needs to be ready in case they miss playing time. We like Graham's balance, burst and natural instincts as a runner.

Texans | Dennis Johnson to be added    Sun Oct 27, 06:42 PM

The Houston Texans plan to sign RB Dennis Johnson off the practice squad roster of the Cleveland Browns Monday, Oct. 28.

Footballguys view: The Texans are adding multiple running backs, which is a bad sign for the Texans' confidence in Arian Foster and Ben Tate next week, and maybe even longer. Deji Karim is the most experienced back they've added, so he'd probably be the best waiver target in deep leagues.

Browns | Dennis Johnson let go    Sat Sep 7, 12:36 PM

The Cleveland Browns have released RB Dennis Johnson.

Footballguys view: That didn't last long. Johnson was picked up by the Browns after the Texans let him go. The Browns are going with Chris Ogbonnaya and Bobby Rainey as the primary backups behind Trent Richardson.

Browns | Three cut, six claimed    Mon Sep 2, 04:10 AM

The Cleveland Browns continued to overhaul their roster on Sunday, Sept. 1, releasing OL Caylin Hauptmann, OL Jarrod Shaw and FB Brad Smelley. The team also claimed TE's MarQueis Gray and Keavon Milton, RB's Dennis Johnson and Bobby Rainey, OL Patrick Lewis and LB Brandon Magee off waivers.

Texans | Dennis Johnson edged out    Fri Aug 30, 02:09 PM

The Houston Texans cut RB Dennis Johnson Friday, Aug. 30, losing a spirited battle to RB Cierre Wood. Johnson had an issue fumbling during the preseason, and ultimately that is what cost him a potential job.

Footballguys view: Former Jacksonville Jaguar Deji Karim is still in the mix for the #3 running back job. With Arian Foster having injury questions coming into the year, and Ben Tate having injury questions throughout his career, you'll want to know the name of the third back in Houston. It might be Wood.

Texans | Three RBs expected to compete for roster spot    Mon Jun 24, 03:16 PM

Houston Texans RBs Cierre Wood, Deji Karim and Dennis Johnson are expected to compete for one roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: Wood is an interesting option here and one to keep an eye on in deep dynasty leagues. He's a good all-around runner with vision to find cutback lanes and the foot frequency to make cuts at speed.

Texans | Several expected to compete for No. 3 RB job    Wed May 15, 03:45 PM

Houston Texans RBs Deji Karim, Cierre Wood, Dennis Johnson and Ray Graham are expected to compete for the No. 3 running back job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: We like Graham in this race to be RB3. The PITT runner looked like he was back to full speed at the Shrine Game earlier this year. He's a natural runner who can make defenders miss in the open field. Wood is also an intriguing option because he's a versatile player.

Texans | Several UDFAs added    Sun Apr 28, 10:22 PM

The Houston Texans agreed to terms with undrafted free agents CB Johnny Adams, CB A.J. Bouye, WR Marlon Brown, G Bryan Collins, WR Andy Cruse, LB Ja'Gared Davis, LB Evan Frierson, RB Dennis Johnson, S Orhian Johnson, G Alex Kupper, WR Alec Lemon, WR Uzoma Nwachukwu, OT Dann O'Neill, P Andre Shapiro, WR Michael X. Smith, S Jawanza Starling, LB Justin Tuggle and RB George Winn Sunday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Texans added some quality players here. Nwachukwu and Lemon are both WRs to keep an eye on in super deep dynasty leagues. Johnson is a powerful runner who is a great fit in the zone blocking system. These players may begin their NFL careers on the practice squad but could develop in the future.

NFL | Dennis Johnson receiving interest    Sat Apr 20, 04:33 PM

University of Arkansas RB Dennis Johnson has met with the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers. Johnson also has worked out privately for the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Johnson doesn't get the same attention his former college teammate Knile Davis does. He's looking like a priority free agent but there may be a team willing to take him in the last round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Johnson is a good all-purpose weapon who can be used effectively as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.
