Seahawks | Seattle has reached out to Tarvaris Jackson    Tue Sep 13, 12:27 PM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) and the Seattle Seahawks 'have kept in direct contact', according to the Sporting News' Alex Marvez. Although the two sides have been in contact, it doesn't appear a signing is imminent, according to a source. Jackson believes he has been cleared from his suspension for violating the NFL's domestic violence policy, but the Seahawks have not confirmed his status with league headquarters.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised with this news. Jackson could step in and immediately be the primary backup to Russell Wilson. Right now, undrafted rookie Trevone Boykin is the no.2 QB in Seattle.

Seahawks | Tarvaris Jackson unlikely to return    Tue Jun 28, 10:23 PM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) is not expected to re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks after serving as the backup there for the past three years. The team has QBs Trevone Boykin and Jake Heaps on the roster as backups to starting QB Russell Wilson.

Footballguys view: Jackson is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening his wife with a gun. He's not going to get a look from any team until this serious matter is cleared up. Jackson is likely done playing in the NFL.

NFL | Tarvaris Jackson arrested    Sat Jun 25, 08:58 AM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) was arrested Friday, June 24, and has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly pulled a gun on his wife.

Footballguys view: Jackson was still seen as a possible signing for the Seahawks, since rookie UDFA Trevone Boykin is currently the backup quarterback. Boykin has been impressing, and the Seahawks wouldn't be the first contender to have a rookie UDFA as a backup. The Patriots had Brian Hoyer as the backup after they traded Matt Cassel in 2009. This arrest could nudge the Seahawks to go with Boykin.

Seahawks | Trevone Boykin continues to rise    Fri Jun 3, 11:33 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Trevone Boykin appears to be the backup to QB Russell Wilson right now ahead of QB Jake Heaps. The Seahawks' confidence in Boykin continues to grow during offseason workouts. There remains a chance that the Seahawks wind up re-signing QB Tarvaris Jackson, though.

Footballguys view: Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has been impressed by Boykin. He was a star QB at TCU but fell undrafted this year. The Seahawks scooped him up because he has a similar skill set to that of Wilson. Boykin is an athletic passer with a good arm, and he put up astronomical numbers at TCU (over 10,000 yards passing, 2,000-plus rushing yards, 114 TDs). We're watching him in all dynasty formats.

Seahawks | Hope to re-sign Tarvaris Jackson    Sun Mar 27, 02:45 PM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) recently drew praise from Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, and Carroll said Seattle would like to bring Jackson back.

Footballguys view: We can't see another team being wild about adding Jackson. He's a good backup, and he fits what the Seahawks do. We think the two sides find a way to get something done.

Seahawks | Tarvaris Jackson to miss time    Mon Aug 17, 04:41 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (ankle) will be sidelined for at least two weeks because of a high ankle sprain.

Footballguys view: Without Jackson in the lineup, we'll see more from R.J. Archer as the backup behind Russell Wilson. The Seahawks could grab a camp arm from the available free agents on the market.

Seahawks | Tarvaris Jackson agrees to terms    Wed Jun 10, 12:35 PM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks Tuesday, June 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The biggest no-brainer decision in the history of the planet here. Okay, maybe it wasn't THAT obvious, but with only R.J. Archer as the backup behind Russell Wilson, the Seahawks had to do something. Jackson knows the system like the back of his hand and should have no problem winning the QB2 job for Seattle.

Seahawks | Tarvaris Jackson could be an option    Fri Jun 5, 06:22 PM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) could be an option for the Seattle Seahawks if they decide to sign another quarterback this offseason.

Footballguys view: It's surprising the Seahawks only have two quarterbacks (Russell Wilson, R.J. Archer) currently on the roster. During the offseason, most teams regularly carry four quarterbacks and one of those is at least a "camp arm." Jackson is a seasoned pro who doesn't need a ton of reps since he knows the system. The team could bring him in if they feel like Archer isn't getting it done as Wilson's backup.

Seahawks | Want to keep Tarvaris Jackson    Mon May 11, 02:17 AM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) may be brought back by the team in 2015. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters the team wants to bring Jackson back and is interested in continuing negotiations.

Footballguys view: Jackson should be brought back to give the team valuable depth behind Russell Wilson. He knows the offense like the back of his hand, and Jackson is a good backup quarterback.

Seahawks | Looking elsewhere for backup QB?    Mon Apr 13, 06:53 AM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) and the Seattle Seahawks have had discussions about a new contract to back up QB Russell Wilson, but there has been difficulty determining Jackson's value. It is possible the team could look elsewhere for a backup.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Seattle moves on to a different free agent quarterback or if they select a backup quarterback in the 2015 NFL draft. This isn't a great group of quarterbacks entering the draft, but this was also a poor group of free agent quarterbacks too. Jackson's probably the best they can do.

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks) and C J.D. Walton (Giants) are scheduled to meet with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Walton would be an interesting pickup, though he was shaky for the Giants last season. Jackson is no more than a third-string backup at best and maybe not even that.

Seahawks | Pete Carroll talks about backup QB job    Tue Aug 12, 09:33 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson and QB Terrelle Pryor both earned praise from head coach Pete Carroll. 'Tarvaris has been steady as can be for quite some time and he's off to another good start here,' Carroll said. 'We have a lot more to learn about Terrelle, but he's a fantastic athlete and he competes so hard to try to win this job.'

Footballguys view: We'll see if Jackson can hold off Pryor to be the primary backup behind Russell Wilson. In super deep dynasty leagues go ahead and buy low on Pryor just in case. He's got incredible physical gifts, but has yet to put it all together as a pro.

  NFL | Veteran-heavy 2015 UFA QB class    Sun Jun 15, 12:26 PM

The NFL's scheduled unrestricted free-agent quarterback class for 2015 features 14 players who will be at least 30 years of age, including Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck (39), St. Louis Rams QB Shaun Hill (35), Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (35), New York Jets QB Michael Vick (34), Cincinnati Bengals QB Jason Campbell (33), New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown (33), Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (32), Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (31), Oakland Raiders QB Trent Edwards (31), Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer (31), Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky (31), Cleveland Browns QB Tyler Thigpen (31) and Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore (30). Estranged Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton (32) is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, although he is reportedly leaning toward retirement.

Footballguys view: Any team looking for a solid veteran backup will have plenty to choose from. The only one of this list who could still be an effective starter is Carson Palmer. We'll see if Arizona tries to sign him to a new deal if he impresses in 2014.

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms on a one-year contract to re-sign unrestricted free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seahawks). The deal's financial terms were undisclosed.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson has big game    Mon Sep 23, 12:41 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson threw for four touchdowns in the team's Week 3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, and QB Tarvaris Jackson also threw for a touchdown and ran one in. Both quarterbacks combined for 331 yards and five touchdown passes and completed 21 of 29 throws. TE Zach Miller and WR Sidney Rice had two touchdowns each.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Seahawks were going to roll the Jaguars and could have done it on the ground or through the air. Jackson had a better fantasy day than some starters in Week 3.

Seahawks | Salary unlikely to be factor in backup QB competition    Sat Jul 13, 11:32 AM

The Seattle Seahawks likely will not use salaries to determine if QB Tarvaris Jackson or QB Brady Quinn wins the No. 2 quarterback job because Jackson is scheduled to make $840,000 while Quinn is scheduled to make $715,000.

Footballguys view: Jackson is a better fit as the backup QB behind Russell Wilson. He knows the Darrell Bevell offense from his days in Minnesota and Seattle. Quinn is more of a traditional pocket passer but lacks the confidence to be effective if filling in as a starter.

Seahawks | Tarvaris Jackson may have edge for No. 2 QB job    Sat Jul 13, 11:28 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson could have an edge over QB Brady Quinn for the No. 2 quarterback job because he knows the system and appears to be a better fit for the direction the offense appears to be going.

Footballguys view: We agree with this report. Jackson worked with OC Darrell Bevell in both Minnesota and Seattle. He is also more athletic than Quinn and Jackson's skill set more closely resembles that of starter Russell Wilson.

Seahawks | Two to compete for No. 2 QB job    Thu Jun 13, 08:14 PM

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said QB Tarvaris Jackson and Brady Quinn will compete for the backup quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We're expecting Jackson to win this job. He's simply a better fit for the offense and knows Darrell Bevell's system since he worked under him in both Seattle and Minnesota. Quinn is a nice third-string QB who gives the team veteran insurance. They would be in trouble if he was thrust into the starting lineup. Quinn may have difficulty beating out Jerrod Johnson for the QB3 spot.

Seahawks | Sign Tarvaris Jackson    Thu Jun 13, 07:40 PM

The Seattle Seahawks signed QB Tarvaris Jackson to a one-year deal after he passed his physical.

Seahawks | Bringing back Tarvaris Jackson?    Tue Jun 11, 11:15 PM

Free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson (Bills) is expected to visit the Seattle Seahawks in the next day or two to possibly sign a contract with the team, two sources said Tuesday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Jackson was the team's starting quarterback in 2011, but lost his job last summer to QB Russell Wilson. After that he was traded to the Buffalo Bills. QB Brady Quinn was added this offseason to be a backup for the Seahawks. Jackson is likely to beat out Quinn for the primary backup job behind Wilson.

Bills | Release Tarvaris Jackson    Mon Jun 10, 07:04 PM

Bills | Doug Marrone praises EJ Manuel    Fri May 31, 02:26 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone has praised rookie QB EJ Manuel during organized team activities. 'From my standpoint ... EJ Manuel has done better (as a rookie) than any of the other organizations I've been a part of,' Marrone said.

Footballguys view: Good news for the rookie here. Manuel is competing with veteran Kevin Kolb to be the team's starter in 2013. He has a long way to go and may not begin the season as the starter. However, he's the franchise QB of the future and may take over at some point during this season.

Buffalo Bills QBs Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson are splitting reps with the first team in OTAs, and QB EJ Manuel is working as the third-stringer.

Footballguys view: The starting job is up for grabs and it's clear the team is going to make Manuel earn the job. Manuel is their franchise QB but there's no guarantee he'll begin the season as the starter. We'll see how this battle works out in training camp.

Bills | EJ Manuel likes new offense    Mon May 20, 01:14 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said it has been easy to pick up the team's offense, which he said is less complicated than the system he learned at Florida State. 'The funny thing is it's easier to learn than the offense I had at Florida State,' he said. 'It's a true West Coast-type progression offense. That's really what I wanted when I was coming through the pre-draft process. I wanted something that I could just go in and say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, check it down and run it. That's it, it's that simple. I love it.' Manuel has spent extensive time working with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Footballguys view: Manuel fits the design of the Marrone offense perfectly. It's an aggressive design featuring downfield passing and some option plays for an athletic quarterback. Manuel is competing with Kevin Kolb to be the team's starter this year.

Bills | Tarvaris Jackson first up in QB rotation    Mon May 13, 04:22 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tarvaris Jackson received the first snaps during organized team activities Monday, May 13. He was followed by QB Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel.

Footballguys view: Don't read too much into this. New Bills head coach Doug Marrone said we should expect the rotation to change daily. We'll be surprised if Jackson ends up the starter at the beginning of the regular season. Rookie E.J. Manuel is considered the favorite to win that job.

Bills | Expected to rotate QBs during workouts    Wed May 1, 12:31 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone indicated QBs EJ Manuel, Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson will split reps with the first-team offense once offseason workouts begin.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked if Manuel doesn't win the starting job outright in camp. He's more athletic and has a stronger arm than Kolb does. Manuel will be able to run the Marrone because of his natural skill set. He'll only have to get used to the speed of the game and start making quicker reads as a passer.

Bills | Kevin Kolb, Tarvaris Jackson may compete for one spot    Mon Apr 1, 02:17 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson may compete for one roster spot during training camp if the team drafts a quarterback that they believe can be their franchise quarterback.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. In fact, we expect the Bills to add a potential franchise QB via the 2013 NFL Draft. A guy like Geno Smith (West Virginia) could be an option in the first-round, while a player like Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) may be a better fit in the second-round.

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb likely will have an edge over QB Tarvaris Jackson for the starting quarterback job because his contract is expected to be worth as much as $13 million.

Footballguys view: If the Bills don't add any other QBs this offseason then Kolb should win the starting job. He's kind of an odd fit for the Doug Marrone system and we expect the team to add a QB like Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Jets | Could look into several cost-effective QB options    Mon Feb 4, 03:18 PM

The New York Jets could show interest in Buffalo Bills impending free-agent QB Tarvaris Jackson, Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Flynn and Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Matt Moore as cost-effective quarterbacks that could compete with QB Mark Sanchez during training camp next season. The team could also show interest in San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith but he may be too expensive for the team.

Footballguys view: In other words the Jets are likely to start Sanchez for most of the 2013 season. They need a true franchise QB but this free agent and draft class are poor at the position.
