Saints | Drew Brees thinks NO could play both QBs    Mon Jul 19, 03:06 PM

New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will be competing for the starting quarterback job during training camp, but retired QB Drew Brees said he believes both could see playing time no matter which one is named the starter. ' Whatever happens, in terms of whoever is the starter, I do think there is a scenario where both of them are playing. If Jameis is the starter I think Taysom is seeing a lot of action at quarterback, maybe even moreso than he did with me,' Brees said.

Saints | Taysom Hill to start opener?    Sun Jul 18, 01:03 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill may be the leading candidate to open the season as the starter because of his ability to produce as a runner and passer, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This is counter to most reports coming out of New Orleans, but underscores that this is still an open competition. Jameis Winston's pocket passing would allow for more continuity from the Drew Brees offense game plan, but Hill can still outright win the job by showing marked improvement in that part of his game. Hill would be an instant top 10-12 fantasy quarterback if he comes out on top.

Saints | QBs Winston/Hill Will 'Rise to the Challenge' per Payton    Mon Jul 12, 01:04 PM

In a recent interview on NFL Network's "Total Access" Saints head coach Sean Payton addressed the quarterback competition between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. "Obviously, there's a high bar for our team. ... And I think both of those guys will rise to the challenge. They both understand the importance of the reps that we're going to have in this upcoming training camp. And there is a little bit of a standard and it's kind of high, and so that's OK." Payton said.

Footballguys view: This quarterback situation is one to watch in training camp. Winston has to be the frontrunner because of his starting experience. Hill has started a handful of games, but he's not the developed passer that Winston is. Now, Winston needs to take care of the football better but we're expecting Payton to scheme something for that. If Winston wins the job, he could have a short leash if Hill impresses in camp. With Hill in the lineup as the starter, the offense would have a different look.

Saints | Taysom Hill giving up versatility?    Tue Apr 20, 06:59 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill is training exclusively as a quarterback this offseason after previously coming to camp prepared to play multiple positions.

Footballguys view: Hill doesn't need to work on other positions, he needs to be a better passer. That comes from work in the offseason, so that's what he's doing. It's not like he's going to lose his athleticism, and Hill will still be a dual-threat quarterback if he's the starter or not.

Saints | Jameis Winston positioned to start in 2021?    Tue Mar 23, 03:31 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston seems to 'have the leg up' over Taysom Hill to be the team's starting quarterback in 2021, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Winston may have the leg up over Hill because he's got more experience. Hill started last year when Drew Brees was banged up but is still limited as a passer. Winston went 30-for-30 in 2019 as the Buccaneers starter and obviously needs to cut down on turnovers/interceptions if he wins the starting job with the Saints.

Saints | Open QB competition with Saints    Tue Mar 16, 12:37 PM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QBs Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston will compete for the starting position in training camp, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: When Drew Brees went down with injury last year, Winston took over as the main quarterback - in that game. After that, the Saints had Hill as their starter with mixed results. Winston returns to the Saints with the chance to win the job in training camp. We think that's what happens as Hill looks better as a gadget quarterback than he does a starter.

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill signed a four-year contract extension with the Saints Sunday, March 14, worth $140 million but all four years of the contract are voidable, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Some much-needed room for the Saints is created with this transaction. The move creates over $7.5 million in salary cap space for the Saints in 2021.

Saints | New Orleans picks up road rout in Week 17    Sun Jan 3, 07:20 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 22-of-32 passes for 201 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers. RB Ty Montgomery filled in for the missing RB Alvin Kamara (illness), going for a season-high 105 yards on 18 carries, while QB Taysom Hill rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter. WR Emmanuel Sanders posted nine grabs for 63 yards and a touchdown, while TE Jared Cook ended with four catches, 43 yards and a touchdown on five targets. WR Austin Carr posted an 11-yard touchdown on his only grab, while DE Carl Granderson had two solo tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits.

Footballguys view: Brees was solid as the Saints also benefited from some Teddy Bridgewater mistakes. Emmanuel Sanders got a 500,000 dollar incentive with his eighth catch of the night and Ty Montgomery showed he can still contribute on an NFL field. The Saints will host the Bears next week.

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill went 27-for-37 for 232 yards and two touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13. He also rushed for 83 yards on 14 carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Hill showed he can be a credible passing quarterback against the Falcons for the second time in three weeks. He should get the start against the Eagles and be a solid QB1 option, but it looks like Drew Brees will return for the Week 15 matchup against Kansas City.

Footballguys view: The Saints made an effort to keep Hill in the pocket as a passer and after a slow start, he had a solid second half. His two rushing scores made him a huge fantasy hit and he'll be starting QB1 consideration against the Broncos next week. He should be a waiver wire pickup if he wasn't already.

Saints | Taysom Hill could be long-term solution at QB    Sun Nov 22, 12:10 PM

One reason why the New Orleans Saints decided to have QB Taysom Hill start over QB Jameis Winston for Week 11's game against the Atlanta Falcons is that head coach Sean Payton is curious if Hill would be a viable long-term solution under center for the organization. New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton declined to announce Monday, Nov. 16, whether he intends to start Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill in place of the injured Drew Brees in Week 11 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Footballguys view: Winston was ...well, Winston-like filling in for an injured Brees in Week 10. He's got more experience and would likely be the starter with Brees out of action for the foreseeable future. However, Hill might get the shot or at least get more snaps as a quarterback with Brees out.

Saints | Taysom Hill to remain a specialist?    Sat Jun 13, 09:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will continue to play multiple position even if QB Drew Brees misses time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic, and Holder believes QB Jameis Winston will take over the traditional backup role that Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater filled last year.

Footballguys view: Hill did catch six touchdowns last year and he seems to perk up the offense when he gets on the field, so keeping him in this role is smart, but it doesn't necessarily have to preclude the team from having him serve as the backup. They would need to carry a third quarterback anyway in case Hill gets hurt, but it is surprising that a player expected to take over at quarterback next year isn't trusted to be a backup this year.

Saints | Taysom Hill next in line?    Fri May 22, 09:35 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will 'be the guy' when QB Drew Brees retires, according to Jay Glazer of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: That's been 'the word' for some time, so nothing really new here. Hill may actually get more work behind Brees this year, not just as a gadget quarterback. Of course, Hill will have to beat out free agent addition Jameis Winston to win the primary backup job behind Brees in 2020.

New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will have to compete and beat out the competition to back up QB Drew Brees in 2020, according to head coach Sean Payton Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: The word is Hill is going to get more playing time this year, even if that's as a gadget/third-string quarterback. Winston has all the starting experience and is the better passer, so we're expecting him to win the primary backup job behind Brees.

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill received a one-year extension on top of the one-year, $4.6 million tender he received in March, according to a source. His deal now runs through the 2021 season.

Footballguys view: Yahoo's Charles Robinson reports the deal includes $16 million guaranteed. Hill should see an expanded role in 2020 with this hefty price tag for a 'third-string' quarterback. The Saints are expected to sign Jameis Winston to a one-year deal in order to back up Drew Brees.

Updating a previous report, restricted free-agent QB Taysom Hill (Saints) received a first-round tender from the New Orleans Saints on Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: The Saints are trying to keep Hill around as the heir apparent to Drew Brees. This first-round tender should keep him with the Saints and deter any other team from making a run at him. Hill might get onto the field a bit more in 2020 as the team tries to keep Brees fresh.

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent QB Taysom Hill is a player the Saints expect to sign to a new contract before the start of free agency.

Footballguys view: They have a first-round tender on Hill and most speculate that the team thinks he's the quarterback of the future. Drew Brees is coming back for one more season in 2020, but Hill could play more this year and then take over as the starter in 2021.

Saints | Taysom Hill open to leaving New Orleans    Mon Feb 10, 05:03 PM

Impending free-agent QB Taysom Hill told 97.5 The Fanatic's Rob Maaddi during Super Bowl week that he views himself as a franchise quarterback and is open to leaving the New Orleans Saints if they don't share that view. However, he also emphasized he 'loves' playing with QB Drew Brees and hopes to continue doing so.

Footballguys view: Hill is a restricted free agent and we'll see what kind of tender the Saints put hon him. The rest of the league is trying to find a quarterback like Hill who can work as a gadget player to be featured as a runner, passer or receiver. We think he stays with the Saints...but we'll see if Brees returns for another season ahead of him on the depth chart.

Saints | Taysom Hill may receive top tender    Sun Feb 2, 02:58 PM

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent QB Taysom Hill may receive the first-round tender offer this offseason.

Footballguys view: It seems like the Saints are pretty intent on keeping Hill around as a gadget player and change-of-pace quarterback. Drew Brees and Teddy Bridgewater are also set to be free agents this offseason, so the Saints have some interesting decisions to make at the position. First things first, Brees has to announce that he's going to keep playing and not retire.

Footballguys view: Brees, Hill and Teddy Bridgewater are all free agents this offseason. The Saints have some big decisions to make, provided that Brees does not retire. They won't be able to keep all three quarterbacks, but re-signing Brees and Hill might be the way they go.

Saints | Sean Payton expects QB change    Thu Jan 30, 01:14 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said Thursday, Jan. 30, that he doesn't expect QBs/pending free agents Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill will all be back with the Saints next season. To have all three of those guys back is probably very unlikely,' Payton said. 'You really appreciate the season you had when you had all three of them.'

Footballguys view: Change is part of the game, and getting all three quarterbacks back in 2020 just isn't going to happen. Brees could remain as the starter if he decides he wants to keep playing and can come to an agreement with the Saints. Bridgewater was incredibly effective as the starter while Brees was out in 2019, and he could be the heir apparent to Brees. Hill is a great part-time player and will have a market for his services because of his versatility as a passer, runner and receiver.

Saints | New Orleans loses Wild Card game    Sun Jan 5, 04:38 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees went 26-for-33 for 208 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card playoff game. QB Taysom Hill completed a 50-yard pass, rushed for 50 yards on four carries and caught two passes for 25 yards and one touchdown during the game. RB Alvin Kamara rushed for 21 yards and one touchdown on seven carries and caught eight passes for 34 yards. RB Latavius Murray rushed for 21 yards on five carries. WR Michael Thomas caught seven passes for 70 yards on eight targets. TE Jared Cook caught five passes for 54 yards on five targets, while WR Ted Ginn Jr. caught one pass for 18 yards on two targets.

Footballguys view: The Saints just couldn't stop the Vikings offense down the stretch. There was a potential non-call on Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph when he pushed off to score a touchdown in overtime, but so many other opportunities slipped through the Saints fingers on Sunday. It's another disappointing end for the Saints in the postseason. The Saints are now the first team in NFL history to have six straight playoff eliminations by one score and the second team since the Packers from 2013-15 to be eliminated in three straight postseasons on the final play of the game.

Saints | Week 17 final stats for Saints    Sun Dec 29, 04:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees wrapped up the regular season with 19-of-30 passing for 253 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers. RB Latavius Murray led the team with 61 rushing yards on 17 attempts, while RB Alvin Kamara posted eight runs for 39 yards and two touchdowns while hauling in two grabs for 18 yards. WR Tre'Quan Smith led the way with five grabs for 56 yards and a score, and QB Taysom Hill had a 45-yard touchdown on his only grab while running for four yards. WR Michael Thomas was held to just 37 yards on four grabs across nine targets. TE Jared Cook also contributed two catches for 44 yards and a TD. LB A.J. Klein also added a 14-yard interception for touchdown.

Footballguys view: Brees had an easy day in the tune up for a possible game next week against Minnesota if the 49ers beat the Seahawks and a bye and #2 seed if the Seahawks win at home. He may retire after this season, but appears to be in better form than fellow aging quarterbacks Philip Rivers, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers.
