Panthers | Stephen Hill let go    Sun Aug 28, 01:20 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill was released Sunday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: Hill was knocking on the door of a roster spot before tearing his ACL last year. He wasn't able to make a serious run at a spot this year, but with his size and speed, he should remain on the NFL's radar as long as he works to get his physical gifts all the way back.

Panthers | Several Carolina WRs fighting for jobs    Fri Jul 22, 08:13 PM

Carolina Panthers WRs Corey Brown, Stephen Hill, Brenton Bersin, Kevin Norwood and Damiere Byrd will compete for two roster spots during training camp.

Footballguys view: Brown has some experience, but he plays a similar role to fellow Ohio State speedster Ted Ginn. Hill has the highest ceiling, but he is coming back from a torn ACL. Byrd has gotten some buzz and the team added Norwood during the season last year, so this is really a wide open competition.

Panthers | Stephen Hill putting in the work    Wed Jul 20, 01:57 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill is looking to resurrect his career, and wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl has raved about his work ethic so far this summer.

Footballguys view: Hill has always been naturally talented, but injuries and inconsistencies knocked his pro career off track. He's a long-shot to ever pay off for dynasty owners, but in super deep leagues Hill is worth keeping track of.

Panthers | Stephen Hill still recovering    Sat May 28, 04:31 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill (knee) only participated in some individual drills last week when the Panthers began organized team activities. Hill is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last season. He doesn't want to rush his recovery, but Hill said he also wants to take his time. 'I'm just trying to do all I can with what they've given me to do, and then I'll just go from there.

Footballguys view: The story with Hill will likely always be "what might have been." Following in a line of Georgia Tech WRs that include Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas, Hill has seen his pro career set back by injury and inconsistency. It would be a great story if Hill was able to turn things around, stay healthy and play up to his potential. It's a story we're not counting on being written.

Panthers | Stephen Hill goes to IR    Mon Aug 3, 05:43 PM

Free-agent WR Stephen Hill (knee) was placed on Reserve/Injured Monday, Aug. 3, after being waived/injured Sunday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: Hill's going to miss this season after spending all of last season on the Panthers' practice squad. He was trying to make a comeback this year after his career got off track with the Jets. The former second-round pick may see opportunities difficult to come by after this.

Panthers | Carolina waives Stephen Hill    Sun Aug 2, 07:53 PM

The Carolina Panthers waived WR Stephen Hill (knee) after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament Sunday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: Hill was trying to make a comeback in the NFL after disappointing with the Jets and spending last year on the Panthers practice squad. The 2012 second-round pick might get another chance in the NFL, but it's also possible that his days as a pro are done.

Panthers | Stephen Hill has ACL injury    Sun Aug 2, 11:52 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill (knee) has an ACL injury, according to assistant head coach Steve Wilks Sunday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: Bad news for a wide receiver trying to make a comeback of sorts in the NFL. Hill spent last year on the Panthers practice squad after washing out with the Jets. A second-round pick in 2012, Hill has a nice size/speed combination but he's never been able to put it together.

Panthers | Paul Browning signs    Sun Aug 2, 10:06 AM

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent WR Paul Browning Sunday, Aug. 2. Browning is expected to take WR Stephen Hill's roster spot.

Footballguys view: Hill's injury could be the end of a story that held a lot of promise and delivered few shining moments. Hill is poised to be the most prominent exhibit in the case against looking at measureables without context of football skills as the key to deciphering a player's future.

Panthers | Stephen Hill impresses coach    Wed Jun 17, 12:24 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill has been one of the standout performers during offseason workouts, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Hill followed in the footsteps of greats like Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas at Georgia Tech. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his career to this point, but it sounds like he may be turning things around. A second-round pick of the Jets in 2012, Hill was on the Panthers practice squad last year. In super deep dynasty leagues we'd go ahead and buy low just out of curiosity.

Panthers | Stephen Hill may be an option    Fri Mar 27, 11:33 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill may be an option in 2015, and head coach Ron Rivera said he's excited to see Hill in camp. 'With his size (6-4, 215) and speed and his ability to get vertical, if he can assimilate to what we do - and I think he will,' Rivera said. 'He seems to be a very smart man - he might be a guy that has an opportunity to contribute for us.'

Footballguys view: Following in the footsteps of former Georgia Tech WRs Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas, Hill has been a colossal bust. If the Panthers add him, it will only be as a reserve receiver.

Panthers | Stephen Hill signs Futures deal    Wed Jan 14, 05:17 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill signed a Reserve/Future contract Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Footballguys view: Hill has a Calvin Johnson-esque set of physical tools, but the comparison stops there. Still, Carolina is a wide open situation for reps at wide receiver in 2015, and Hill could make his way onto the opening day roster. We'll be monitoring his development this offseason.

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill might be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster to be used as the No. 4 receiver if WR Philly Brown cannot play in the NFC divisional playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks Saturday, Jan. 10.

Panthers | Stephen Hill signed to practice squad    Tue Sep 2, 05:08 PM

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent WR Stephen Hill (Jets) to their practice squad Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Hill just needed a fresh start after flaming out with the Jets. He has a fantastic size/speed combination, but injuries and bad hands have held him back as a pro. The Panthers are incredibly thin at the wide receiver position, so this signing is good for them too.

Panthers | Stephen Hill to work out    Mon Sep 1, 12:36 PM

Free-agent WR Stephen Hill (Jets) is scheduled to work out for the Carolina Panthers Monday, Sept. 1, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are desperate for wide receiver help. Even though Hill was a bust with the Jets, he's still only 23-years old and has a great size/speed combination. He'll get a fresh start somewhere else, probably in some place like Carolina or Cleveland.

Jets | Team unfair to Stephen Hill?    Sat Aug 30, 08:44 PM

Free-agent WR Stephen Hill's agent, Alan Herman, said that Hill never had a chance to succeed with the New York Jets. 'He didn't have a chance that first year with that whole Tim Tebow-Mark Sanchez fiasco,' Herman said. 'His second year, Geno Smith was learning how to play quarterback. So they never threw the ball deep because they wanted to simplify things for Geno.'

Footballguys view: This may have an element of truth, but Herman comes off as a bit of a whiner here. Demaryius Thomas worked with Tebow too, and he's turned into a superstar in the NFL. Herman makes no mention of Hill's inability to stay healthy or consistently catch the football.

Browns | Connection with Stephen Hill?     Sat Aug 30, 08:30 PM

Free-agent WR Stephen Hill's agent believes the Cleveland Browns will put in a claim for Hill. 'I would think the Browns would put in a claim,' the agent said. '(Head coach Mike) Pettine knows him and they need receivers and Stephen can stretch the field.'

Footballguys view: The Browns need all the help they can get at the wide receiver position. Adding Hill would make a lot of sense. If healthy, he could play the Josh Gordon-like role for the offense. Hill needs a fresh start, and still has a nice size/speed combination.

NFL | Stephen Hill receiving interest    Sat Aug 30, 01:45 PM

Free-agent WR Stephen Hill (Jets) has received interest from three teams including a team in the AFC North, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Of course he is. Hill is only 23-years old, and he's got an intriguing size/speed combination. Following the footsteps of Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas at Georgia Tech, Hill has struggled with drops and knee issues as a pro.

Jets | Stephen Hill cut    Sat Aug 30, 12:39 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill has been released.

Footballguys view: The once promising wideout has not lived up to his potential. After following Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas at Georgia Tech, some felt Hill had tremendous upside because of his size/speed combination. At only 23 years old, there will be plenty of teams interested in Hill. He needs to get over his concentration problems if he wants to get his career jump-started.

Jets | Stephen Hill sick    Sun Aug 24, 03:22 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill (illness) did not practice because of an illness Sunday, Aug. 24.

Footballguys view: Hill is looking to have a bounce-back season in 2014. He's been a major disappointment after following in the footsteps of Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas at Georgia Tech. Hill has little fantasy value unless he does a 180 turn this year.

Jets | Stephen Hill still behind    Wed Aug 20, 11:08 AM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill has only one reception and 17 yards this preseason and has been targeted only twice. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal have worked with Hill on his route running, including shortening his stride lengths to add fluidity and efficiency, but Hill hasn't shown much progress.

Footballguys view: Hill is a bona fide bust despite having measureables that are on a par with Calvin Johnson. It's time to let him go in dynasty leagues.

Jets | Stephen Hill working to improve health, speed    Mon Jun 30, 03:25 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill's (knee) No. 1 priority this offseason is staying healthy. Hill said he doesn't have to be at full-speed all the time. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal have worked with Hill on controlling strides and changing direction in order to better control his speed.

Footballguys view: It's a make-or-break year for Hill. He's big and fast, but Hill is constantly banged up and has been a career underachiever to this point. Hill has missed nine full games over the last two years, and he's missed parts of others due to injury. He should start on the outside opposite Eric Decker this year, but we're likely to see slot receiver Jeremy Kerley produce more in 2014. The Jets won't have a robust passing game regardless if Geno Smith or Michael Vick starts for them at quarterback.

Jets | Stephen Hill impressing     Fri Jun 20, 10:58 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill had a solid minicamp, moving well and catching the passes thrown his way.

Footballguys view: Hill is in a make-or-break season. He's failed to live up to expectations so far as a pro. He's failed to stay healthy and when he's been on the field he looks lethargic in and out of his breaks. The team could sure use some help at the wide receiver position.

Jets | Receiving corps is deep    Wed Jun 18, 04:17 PM

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg believes the team's receiving corps is extremely deep and has more than a handful of guys who can play at a real high level.

Footballguys view: Mornhinweg is putting lipstick on a pig here, as the Jets have a #2 cast as a #1 (Eric Decker) and a mishmash of slot receivers and inconsistency (David Nelson, Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, Greg Salas, Clyde Gates) after that. Rookie TE Jace Amaro could see a lot of targets early in his career.

Jets | Nothing guaranteed for Stephen Hill    Tue Jun 17, 06:00 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill's roster spot is on the line this summer after two lackluster seasons and knee problems. Hill worked with QB Geno Smith in the offseason in order to improve their chemistry, and Hill has been receiving first-ream repetitions in minicamp. He didn't have surgery on his knees in the offseason but spent his time strengthening the muscles in his knees. "My knee actually feels better than it did last year," Hill said. "Because last year I didn't take a lot of OTA reps and I went all through OTAs and now minicamp, so right now I feel strictly 100 percent." The Jets have plenty of options at wide receiver if Hill doesn't work out. He caught 24 balls for 342 yards and a touchdown last season.

Jets | Stephen Hill stands out    Tue Jun 17, 01:07 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill has been the best wide receiver at the team's minicamp so far, in the opinion of Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Footballguys view: Hill has outstanding natural size, speed, and athleticism, so he should shine in a practice setting. Still, those tools give him considerable upside if he does get his game together, so it's worth watching to see if he can carry this over to camp and the preseason and win the #2 wide receiver job for the Jets. He would be worth a very late round pick if he can do that.

Jets | Stephen Hill could start    Fri Jun 13, 01:39 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill could start opposite WR Eric Decker in 2014, in the opinion of Rich Cimini of ESPN New York. The battle for the No. 2 wide receiver could come down to Hill and WR David Nelson.

Footballguys view: That's not a great sign for the Jets. They're essentially without a true WR1 on the roster, and Decker's numbers should suffer now that he's not with the Broncos. Hill has been a disappointment to this point in his career. Injuries and inconsistencies have kept him from playing up to his potential as a pro. He still has a fantastic size/speed combination, but we'd have to see him flash in training camp and the preseason before we got even a little bit excited about his prospects in 2014.

Jets | Coach not giving up on Stephen Hill    Thu Jun 12, 09:43 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill still has a chance to become a consistent part of the team's offense, according to receivers coach Sanjay Lal. Hill has battled injuries in each of his first two seasons, and Lal believes the injuries are a big reason why he has struggled to make an impact. 'If he can maintain his health, I can see him becoming consistent,' Lal said. 'Because to become consistent, you have to practice. And you have to practice without thinking about, 'Am I going to get hurt?' or 'Is this hurting?''

Footballguys view: It's a make-or-break season for Hill. The big wide receiver has struggled to stay healthy and impress during his time with the Jets. If he doesn't get it done this year, we could see the Jets move on.

Jets | Geno Smith working out with receivers    Thu May 22, 06:21 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is working out in Florida with Jets WRs Jeremy Kerley, Jacoby Ford, Stephen Hill and Greg Salas.

Footballguys view: Smith needs to get on the same page as these guys and, frankly, Stephen Hill desperately needs the practice as well. Kerley was the only reliable guy (when healthy) so it's good to see an attempt to keep up that chemistry. Salas and Ford are both guys who aren't guaranteed a roster spot so the extra work will do them good. We're cautiously optimistic about the Jets offense, if not sold on the overall fantasy value of most of its members.

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill's spot on the roster is not a guarantee, in the opinion of Rich Cimini of ESPN New York. Hill has ended the last two seasons on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: Good news for Hill here. We'll see if he can get healthy and start playing up to his potential. 2013 was pretty much a lost season for Hill as he struggled to make an impact. Buy low in deep dynasty leagues just on the chance he could turn things around.

We'll see,' Ryan said about Hill's season being over. 'Obviously we'd like to get him out here if he can play and can be effective. That would the best-case scenario for us. We'll see how it progresses.'

Footballguys view: Hill's season has been a wash. He looked decent earlier this season, but things quickly fell apart after that. Let's see if he can look better next year after spending the offseason getting completely healthy. We'll see if the Jets upgrade their QB position this offseson too.
