The Green Bay Packers signed free-agent DL Phillip Merling (Dolphins) to an undisclosed deal Wednesday, May 23, and released TE Cameron Ford and QB Nick Hill.
| Footballguys view: Merling's not the same player he used to be after suffering an Achilles' injury in 2010. However, he's worth taking a shot on as the team looks for better depth on the D-Line. |

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said the team will not be looking to sign a veteran quarterback to backup QB Aaron Rodgers. McCarthy said QBs Graham Harrell, Nick Hill and B.J. Coleman likely will be competing for two jobs.
| Footballguys view: We love the addition of Coleman in the seventh-round. He's big, tall, has a strong arm, and sets up quickly in the pocket. Coleman looks like Peyton Manning when he runs a play fake but needs to work on his accuracy and consistency. |

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he is fine with having QBs Graham Harrell and Nick Hill as the backup quarterbacks on the roster.
| Footballguys view: We feel this is a very dangerous situation for the Packers. In previous years they've had one of the best backup situations in the league with Matt Flynn behind Aaron Rodgers. Harrell is not Flynn and would struggle if forced into the starting lineup. Don't be surprised if the Packers address the backup QB position in the 2012 NFL Draft. |

The Green Bay Packers have signed street free-agent QB Nick Hill. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Hill played for the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League this season.
