Bears | Mike Furrey hired    Sat Jan 13, 09:55 AM

The Chicago Bears hired former NFL WR Mike Furrey to be their new wide receivers coach Friday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: Furrey played both wide receiver and safety during his NFL career with teams like the Rams, Lions and Browns. He was most recently the head coach at Limestone College for the last two seasons. Furrey is part of Matt Nagy's new staff, and Furrey will be working to get better production from the position for young QB Mitchell Trubisky.

Redskins | Unrestricted free agents     Wed Jul 27, 12:28 AM

The Washington Redskins have the following unrestricted free agents to consider re-signing for the 2011 season: LB H.B. Blades, OT Jammal Brown, CB Phillip Buchanon, S Reed Doughty, WR Mike Furrey, DE Kedric Golston, QB Rex Grossman, OT Stephon Heyer, LB Rocky McIntosh, CB Carlos Rogers and LB Chris Wilson.

Footballguys view: With McNabb perhaps moving on via trade to the Vikings the team will need to add at least one more QB to the roster. Re-signing Grossman makes the most sense as he knows the team, and knows the system.

Redskins | Furrey finding success quickly    Sun Jun 20, 04:18 PM

CBSSports.com reports Redskins WR Mike Furrey has been working under a self-imposed deadline of having learned the playbook in a week's time so he could make more significant contributions during the team's current minicamp, and he has succeeded. Furrey is battling for a roster spot with the Redskins this summer. "It's nice to be out there in an actual huddle and go out and play and not think so much, so I feel a lot more comfortable now," Furrey said.

Footballguys view: The Redskins roster has a cluster of veteran receivers who will compete for a roster spot behind Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, and Malcolm Kelly. Furrey was the last one to sign, but could beat out Joey Galloway, Bobby Wade, and Roydell Williams for what could be the fifth and final spot in the WR corps.

Browns | Cribbs as #2 wide receiver not an experiment    Fri Sep 25, 02:18 PM

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports that Browns head coach Eric Mangini dispelled the idea that Josh Cribbs as the #2 wide receiver is an experiment. "I wouldn't classify it as an experiment by any stretch," Mangini said. "It's something that he's committed to and we're committed to. And I think he's done some good things. He's gotten open. Obviously [there were] a few balls he would have liked to convert on. But he's made a lot of progress. I think he'll continue to make progress as he works at it."

Footballguys view: Cribbs is worth rostering in leagues that give you credit for special teams TDs and return yards, and he should improve as a wide receiver as the season goes on. He should be rostered in all deep dynasty leagues.

Browns | Mangini suggests rotation at #2 wide receiver    Wed Sep 2, 09:00 PM

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports that the Browns may not have a true #2 wide receiver. "I don't know if it has to necessarily be 'this is number two, this is number three, this is number four,'" said Mangini. "Sometimes, you rotate guys through and depending on roles on special teams, depending on matchups, you could have all different starters throughout the course of the year."

Footballguys view: You shouldn't be looking for fantasy value because the Browns offense doesn't look promising, but this especially puts the kibosh on any fantasy threat emerging opposite Braylon Edwards.

Browns | Furrey to be the 3rd down target?    Mon Aug 24, 05:42 PM

The Akron Beacon-Journal notes Mike Furrey looks like he might become the third-down target the Browns haven't had since Joe Jurevicius in 2007.

Footballguys view: The Browns are looking for consistent receivers, and Furrey so far has 5 receptions this preseason. It looks like he's earned the trust of both quarterbacks, and could have a couple of good games this year. Fantasy wise there is no need to pick up Mike Furrey on your roster.

Browns | Top three receivers evident     Tue Aug 18, 06:16 PM

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports it is evident Cleveland Browns WRs Braylon Edwards, Mike Furrey and Josh Cribbs are the team's top three wide receivers at this point.

Footballguys view: Rookies Brian Robiskie and Mohammed Massaquoi are going to have to earn a starting job, as the Browns are not handing them anything. Cribbs continues to develop as a wide receiver, and the team has been pleasantly surprised by veteran Mike Furrey - who hasn't been that productive since he was with Mike Martz in Detroit.

Browns | Furrey listed as starter    Tue Aug 11, 03:44 PM

Zac Jackson, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports Cleveland Browns WR Mike Furrey is listed as a starter on the team's depth chart. Head coach Eric Mangini said the depth chart is very unofficial.

Footballguys view: Mangini once published a first depth chart in alphabetical order. We wouldn't put much stock in what his depth chart says now.

Browns | Furrey has impressed this offseason    Mon Jul 20, 10:37 AM

Terry Pluto, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns liked what they saw from WR Mike Furrey during offseason minicamps. The team thinks Furrey can be an effective slot receiver this season.

Footballguys view: We have no doubt Furrey can be a dependable slot receiver, but he'll never again have the fantasy value he had under Mike Martz in Detroit. He is not worth rostering except in ridiculously deep PPR leagues.

Browns | Patten and Furrey near the top of the preliminary depth chart?    Thu Jul 16, 11:34 AM

Zac Jackson, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports Cleveland Browns WRs David Patten and Mike Furrey will be near the front of the line for wide receiver drills when training camp opens. However, it will be up to them to stay there by holding off the younger wide receivers behind them looking for playing time.

Footballguys view: Patten and Furrey may be near the top of the depth chart - for now, but by the time training camp is over they could be near the bottom (or off) of the list. The Browns have several young receivers that could get into the lineup before this veteran duo. We anticipate rookie WR Brian Robiskie being named the starter opposite of Braylon Edwards.

Browns | Furrey signed    Tue May 5, 07:11 PM

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Cleveland Browns have signed unrestricted free-agent WR Mike Furrey (Lions). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Mike Furrey was a big part of the Mike Martz offense in 2006 & 2007 when he caught 159 passes and seven touchdowns. His reception total dropped to 18 in 2008 and his season ended with a concussion. We'll see if he can beat out Syndric Steptoe or David Patten in training camp.
