Commanders | Austin Ekeler placed on IR Mon Sep 15, 03:28 PM
Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (Achilles) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Sept. 15.
Footballguys view: No surprise there. Ekeler suffered a season-ending (and possibly career-ending) torn Achilles tendon in Green Bay last Thursday night. Ekeler was a critical piece to the Commanders' offensive success last season, with 733 total yards and four touchdowns, and looked to be just as impactful in 2025 before his injury. With Ekeler out, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr. are the remaining backs on the active roster. Croskey-Merritt is expected to be the starter. The team also added former Cardinal and Buccaneers RB Chase Edmonds to their practice squad. |

Updating previous reports, an MRI exam for Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (Achilles) confirmed that he has suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the 2025 season.

Updating an earlier report, Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (Achilles) is believed to have suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon during the team's Week 2 matchup with the Green Bay Packers. He will undergo imaging to confirm the injury on Friday, Sept. 12. Prior to departing, Ekeler carried the ball eight times for 17 yards to go along with two receptions for seven yards.
Footballguys view: Ekeler had been showing his signature burst and creativity from the Chargers days as a Commander even though they didn't give him a large enough role to flourish in fantasy leagues. Washington's offense will miss him more than fantasy teams. If this is it for Ekeler, he will go down as one of the best UDFA backs in NFL history, and an inspiration to small school college players and undrafted players everywhere. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler could be a cut candidate after the team selected RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round. The team would gain over $3.4 million in cap savings with a $1.5 million hit in dead money by releasing Ekeler.
Footballguys view: Ekeler was decent as a pass catcher last year. And no other running back on the depth chart specializes in that role the way he does. While this would come as a bit of a surprise, there are a lot of RB-needy teams out there who would be quick to sign Ekeler. |

The Washington Commanders were eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 26. QB Jayden Daniels completed 29-of-48 passes for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing six times for a team-high 48 yards with a score. RB Brian Robinson Jr. struggled with 11 runs for just 36 yards, while RB Austin Ekeler was bottled up for just 15 yards on eight carries, while contributing five receptions for 17 yards while losing a fumble. TE Zach Ertz posted game highs with 11 receptions, 104 yards and 16 targets, while WR Terry McLaurin had three grabs for 51 yard and a TD on seven targets. WR Dyami Brown posted three receptions for 42 yards on five targets with a fumble lost. WR Olamide Zaccheaus added four catches for 26 yards on five targets, while TE Ben Sinnott had a 23-yard catch on his only target, with WR Jamison Crowder adding a 4-yard catch on three targets. CB Jeremy Chinn and LB Bobby Wagner each totaled team bests with nine stops.
Footballguys view: The Commanders offense fumbled the ball away or settled for field goals too many times to hang with the Eagles. Brown's fumble slows down the momentum he had built in the playoffs as he heads to free agency, while Ertz had a great game against the team he won a ring with in 2018. Washington exceeded any reasomable expectations this year and they will be the standard for stunning one-year turnarounds for the foreseeable future. |

Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels completed 22 of his 31 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran 16 times for 51 yards in a 45-31 win over the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round. RB Brian Robinson Jr. had 15 carries for 77 yards and two scores, and RB Austin Ekeler finished with 47 rushing yards on six carries to go with 41 receiving yards. WR Terry McLaurin caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, and WR Dyami Brown had six grabs for a team-high 98 yards. TE Zach Ertz ended with five catches for 28 yards and a score. S Jeremy Chinn led the defense with a team-high 12 tackles, and DE Dorance Armstrong logged a pair of sacks.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com notes, Daniels has impressed all season, but Saturday's win over Detroit. Daniels was excellent in last week's wild-card win over Tampa Bay, but he was sensational in this contest. The rookie signal-caller didn't turn the ball over and never really seemed fazed by the stage he was playing on. Washington head coach Dan Quinn trusted his young quarterback so much that he went for it four times on fourth down. Daniels helped the Commanders convert three of those. They also scored four touchdowns on four trips inside the red zone. Washington seemed like a fun story when the postseason began, as the upstart team shocked everyone with its immediate success. Now, the Commanders are playing in their first NFC Championship Game in 33 years, and they have a realistic shot of winning that game. |

Commanders running back Austin Ekeler has not played since Week 12, when he was diagnosed with a concussion. It was his second concussion of the season. Coach Dan Quinn said Tuesday, via Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com, that Ekeler is "trending" the right way, and a return is "absolutely possible."
Footballguys view: This is the final required week of Ekeler's injured reserve stint, but Quinn offered no timeline for Ekeler. Ekeler has two other known concussions in his eight-year career. In 11 games this season, he has 355 rushing yards, 346 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. share snaps behind Brian Robinson Jr. in Ekeler's absence. |

Footballguys view: Ekeler will remain on IR until Week 18 at the earliest. The Commanders are pushing for the postseason, but we're not sure if Ekeler would get back out there for them in the playoffs. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (concussion) is in the league's concussion protocol, head coach Dan Quinn said Monday, Nov. 25.
Footballguys view: Ekeler, who appeared to be unconscious before getting up and being helped from the field in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys, must clear the protocol to play against the Titans on Sunday. With Ekeler's status in serious question and Brian Robinson Jr. also uncertain with an ankle injury, the Commanders might have to rely on Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr., currently on the practice squad, this weekend. We'll continue to watch for more. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (concussion) suffered a concussion during the Week 12 game, according to head coach Dan Quinn.
Footballguys view: Ekeler was back to receive the final kickoff of the game, with the Commanders down by eight in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. He took a massive hit from the Cowboys' kick return team, and his teammates immediately gestured to the training staff when the play ended. Ekeler initially appeared to be unconscious but eventually made his way off with assistance. A team spokesperson informed reporters the running back had been taken to the hospital to be extra careful. If Ekeler is forced to miss time, Brian Robinson Jr. will remain the starting back, with Jeremy McNichols likely seeing more work. Washington plays the Titans in Week 13. In 10 games this season, Ekeler has had 65 rushes for 333 yards and four touchdowns. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler ran 13 times for a team-high 44 yards and two touchdowns in Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, while adding a single 7-yard reception on two targets.
Footballguys view: Ekeler came through for fantasy investors in his second-straight start with Brian Robinson Jr. sidelined by a hamstring injury. While he didn't get the volume we'd like as a receiver, his role as the goal-line back paid off. As CBSSports.com suggested, the receiving role could return if Robinson can re-take the field in Week 11 against the Eagles, pushing Ekeler back into a complementary role. Remember, the Commanders and Eagles play on Thursday this week. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler rushed for 42 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries against the New York Giants in Week 9. He also caught three passes for 41 yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Chris Rodriguez closed out the win with tough running, but Ekeler did more than enough as the lead back early to feel good about playing him if you plugged him in after Brian Robinson was announced as inactive with a hamstring issue. Ekeler will be at least a flex play if Robinson can't go next week. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler rushed for 21 yards on nine carries against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. He also caught four passes for 47 yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Ekeler wasn't a bust as a what-the-heck RB2/Flex this week, but he wasn't able to get traction against a tough Ravens run defense as the clear lead back with Brian Robinson Jr. sitting out because of a knee injury. The Bucs backfield committee will try to get something going against the Ravens on the ground next week, while Ekeler has a much better matchup against the Panthers. He'll be worth playing if Robinson is out again. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler ended up with six runs for 67 yards in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns, while adding a pair of receptions for 30 yards on his two targets.
Footballguys view: Ekeler hasn't put up a big fantasy day yet, but he has his old burst and he is very dangerous as a receiver. The Washington offense is peaking, so it's only a matter of time before Ekeler posts a week winning stat line. He's worth a flex play against Baltimore next week. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (concussion) is trending in the right direction to play in Week 5, head coach Dan Quinn said on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Footballguys view: Let's see how Ekeler looks as he comes back from this concussion. Ekeler has looked like the old Ekeler (which is a good thing) this season when healthy. Brian Robinson is still going to do his thing as the lead back, but Ekeler's return gives Jayden Daniels another weapon to use. When Ekeler is back, Fantasy GMs can use him as a flex play with upside. |
