Seahawks | Sam Darnold getting used to new offense Sat Jun 21, 10:39 AM
Seattle Seahawks QB Sam Darnold said that he has learned a lot from offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak this offseason, even though many concepts are similar to the ones used when both of them were with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, where Kubiak had served as the passing game coordinator. Although the two offenses are not identical, having the opportunity to work with him again was one of the factors that led to Darnold signing with Seattle as a free agent.
Footballguys view: It's a Kubiak offense, and that's from the Shanahan tree (Bill Walsh if you really go back). That's the same tree that Sean McVay's offense comes from which is where Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell cut his teeth in the coaching world. Darnold is a seasoned veteran who should be able to pick up things quickly. In a Kubiak offense, the language is the most complicated thing to learn. The concepts should be quite similar to what Darnold ran in Minnesota. |

If there was any lingering notion that a healthy Sam Darnold could be beat out for the Seattle Seahawks' starting quarterback job, coach Mike Macdonald put it to rest in decisive fashion Tuesday.Asked whether anything other than an injury between now and the start of the season could lead the Seahawks to go with another quarterback, Macdonald replied: "No, you guys are crazy . . . It's just not going to happen. Sam's our starting quarterback. We love him. He's doing a tremendous job."
Footballguys view: The question came a day after Darnold delivered an up-and-down performance -- including two interceptions across three plays during red-zone drills -- in the Seahawks' fourth day of OTAs, the first that was open to reporters. Macdonald emphasized that it's still early in the offseason program and that some mistakes are expected to happen. The Seahawks signed Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract after trading Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders. Rookie Jalen Milroe and veteran backup Drew Lock are the other options here. |

Seattle Seahawks third-round draft choice QB Jalen Milroe is expected to see 'a small handful of plays a game,' according to ESPN.com's Brady Henderson. Head coach Mike Macdonald made it clear that Sam Darnold will likely take over 90% of the snaps in regular-season games this season if things go according to plan. However Jalen ... earns the right to go out there, then we'll do that, if it's going to help the team, if it's best for us to move the ball and give these defensive coordinators some headaches. I'm really happy it's not going to be us,' Macdonald said.
Footballguys view: While getting the super-athletic Milroe, who has high-end playmaking ability as a runner, into the mix immediately makes sense, fantasy managers should be looking at the long term here. As Sigmund Bloom wrote in his Post-Draft Bloom 100, Milroe landed on a team that could give him a chance to start in 2026. Sam Darnold's deal is basically year-to-year after 2025, and if you think Darnold bombs outside of Minnesota, then Milroe's immense fantasy upside could be unlocked. Bloom added, "[Milroe is] still a viable late first-round pick in superflex leagues and has as much upside as anyone going outside of the first in 1QB leagues." |

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold is unlikely to receive the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on SportsCenter. 'I'm told that the Minnesota Vikings are open to doing a deal with Sam Darnold,' Fowler said. 'People I've talked to around the league believe that the franchise tag is not the likeliest path that Minnesota would take. That's a high number of around $40 million. So, Minnesota's stance seems to be that they're not going to mortgage the future for Sam Darnold,'

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a candidate for the franchise tag if the two sides are not able to work out an agreement before the tag deadline, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com notes, with two bad games to wrap the season â€" one with the No. 1 seed on the line and one in the Wild Card round â€" the Vikings seem to be more content to move forward with 2024 first-rounder J.J. McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season after injuring his knee in the preseason opener against the Raiders. Still, it's not outside the realm of possibility the team could keep both. If they do, it would require franchising Darnold. If that's not how it plays out, the veteran will have plenty of suitors, with the Raiders possibly among the most interested. |

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a target for the Las Vegas Raiders during free agency, in the opinion of ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: Many of the teams that will be looking at the top two draft quarterbacks will also be looking at Darnold, so we should get a slight narrowing of the field of possible teams for Colorado's Shadeur Sanders or Miami's Cam Ward. Darnold landing with new Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly would be a bit of a wild card as Kelly's offensive approach has changed a lot since he was with the Eagles as a head coach and then went back to the college level. |

The Tennessee Titans have so many holes in the roster the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft could be available for trade, according to sources. Tennessee's brass appears open to giving QB Will Levis another shot or adding a quarterback via free agency, with names like Sam Darnold (Vikings) and Justin Fields (Steelers) on the team's radar in March's free agency. ESPN's Dan Graziano speculates the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets all being potential suitors for the No. 1 pick.
Footballguys view: The Titans are more than just a player away, so getting a haul for the no.1 overall pick would make sense. Now, they need a quarterback and there are two in consideration for that pick. As the pre-draft process continues, we'll see if the Titans show greater interest in Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) or Cam Ward (Miami). If that's the case, then they could stay at no.1 and take one of those potential franchise quarterbacks. |

Minnesota Viking impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold has 'earned the right to be a free agent,' although head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters recently that the team will 'continue to have ongoing dialogue and discussions' with him.
Footballguys view: It sounds like O'Connell is preparing the Vikings fanbase for Darnold's departure in free agency. There was a report that O'Connell said "Our goal is to win a championship and Sam Darnold is going to be a huge part of it when we do it", but O'Connell said that report was not "100% accurate". It's not clear if the team would get much in a tag and trade deal with teams knowing that they are very high on 2024 first round pick JJ McCarthy and comfortable turning the offense over to him in his second year despite his going down for the season with a knee injury in August last year. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold averaged 2.6 seconds in pocket time during the 2024 season, according to Pro Football Reference.
Footballguys view: If the Vikings don't tag or re-sign Darnold, pay close attention to quality of his offensive line. He has a tendency to "see ghosts" and was exposed by the Lions and Rams pressure-heavy defensive game plans to end the season. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold completed 33 of his 43 passes for a career-high 377 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in a 27-25 win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 17.
Footballguys view: As NFL.com's Kevin Patra reported, Minnesota got up big as Darnold calmly picked apart the Green Bay secondary, getting to his second and third options with aplomb. Provided excellent protection by his offensive line most of the game, Darnold got everyone involved. When Justin Jefferson (eight receptions for 92 yards) was blanketed, Darnold found Jalen Nailor (5/81/1), Jordan Addison (6/69/1), or T.J. Hockenson (5/68). After a first-drive punt and a missed long field goal, the Vikings scorched Green Bay, scoring 20 unanswered to open a big lead. After the Packers cut the once-big lead to two points, Darnold made plays to clinch the game, hitting three passes to salt away time. Instead of attempting to run out the clock on the ground where they'd struggled, Kevin O'Connell trusted his QB to make plays. Darnold came through. The victory sets up a showdown next week for the NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in Week 18 against the Lions. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold went 22-for-28 for 347 yards and five touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14. He also rushed for seven yards on four carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Darnold was outstanding against a revived Falcons pass rush. He was able to find Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson open downfield with regularity as the Vikings pass offense looks as dangerous as it has all year. The Vikings will face a weary Bears defense next week and Darnold deserves to be in consideration as your fantasy playoffs QB1 unless you have an elite option and he's your backup. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold completed 22-of-34 passes for 330 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears, while running twice for minus-1 yard.
Footballguys view: As ESPN's Kevin Seifert suggested, Darnold showed his toughness, and he might have had his best stretch as an NFL player in overtime. He left Sunday's game for two plays in the fourth quarter because of what appeared to be an ankle injury. But he returned and completed all six of his pass attempts in overtime to salvage the game. Darnold delivered repeatedly in the clutch for his team, leading the Vikings to a dramatic 30-27 win in overtime at Soldier Field. We'll monitor his status heading into a Week 13 game against the Cardinals. |

Minnesota Vikings TE Josh Oliver (wrist, ankle) did not practice all week and has been ruled out for Week 12 versus the Chicago Bears. CB Stephon Gilmore (rest) and S Harrison Smith (rest) did not practice on Friday, Nov. 22, but are expected to play. DL Jonathan Bullard (toe), LB Gabriel Murphy (knee), TE Nick Muse (hand), QB Sam Darnold (foot) and RB Aaron Jones (ribs) practiced in full on Friday and have been removed from the injury report.
Footballguys view: Oliver being ruled out could help T.J. Hockenson, although he hasn't been over 50% of snaps yet in his first three games back. It's possible that the team just uses Johnny Mundt more and Hockenson is still in a limited role. Consider Hockenson's ceiling higher on this news, but he might still have a very low floor. |

Footballguys view: Darnold got bailed out by a few defensive penalties or it wouldn't have been as big of a fantasy day for him. He'll face a tough Bears defense next week and shouldn't be your QB1 unless you are covering a Joe Burrow bye. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold completed 24-of-38 passes for 241 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, while running seven times for 28 yards.
Footballguys view: Darnold had two red zone interceptions and a third that was returned 50+ yards before Ronald Darby fumbled it back to the Vikings. The Vikings didn't score an offensive touchdown. Give some credit to the Jaguars defense, but it does seem like the Darnold magic is wearing off. Next week's game against Tennessee should be easy, but this one was supposed to be easy too. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold completed 18 of 25 passes for 240 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, Oct. 24. He also ran three times for six yards.
Footballguys view: Darnold was highly efficient, but the Vikings comeback effort ended on a play that was ruled a safety but should have been called a facemask penalty in the end zone. He's still a high floor QB1 against the Colts next week with the likely return of TJ Hockenson. The Vikings should warm back up over the next three weeks against AFC South opponents. |
