Falcons | Kirk Cousins felt misled    Tue Jul 8, 10:20 AM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins said he felt a little 'misled' when the Falcons took QB Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, in the first episode of Netflix's 'Quarterback.' Cousins said he was aware the Falcons might draft a quarterback, but definitely not that high. He wasn't informed about the Penix pick until a phone call by offensive coordinator Zac Robinson while Atlanta was on the clock. 'Certainly, if I had the information around free agency, it certainly would've affected my decision,' Cousins said on the first episode of the season. 'I had no reason to leave Minnesota with how much we loved it there if both teams are going to be drafting a quarterback high. But I've also learned in 12 years in this league that you're not entitled to anything. It's all about being able to earn your spot and prove yourself.'

Footballguys view: Cousins led the Falcons to a 6-3 start last season before taking a hard hit to his right arm in Week 10. The Falcons' season took a sharp downward turn beginning with that game. They eventually benched Cousins in Week 16. Penix took over and played solidly, though the team went 1-2 in those games and missed the playoffs. For now, Cousins will serve as the backup to Penix. But Atlanta would surely listen to trade offers if they're out there, with the hope that a team is willing to take on a chunk of his guaranteed $27.5  million salary.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins attends minicamp    Tue Jun 10, 02:26 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins reported for mandatory minicamp Tuesday, June 10, according to The Insiders. 'We're moving forward and it's about how we as a team and as a quarterback room can be the best we can be in 2025,' Cousins said.

Footballguys view: While Atlanta has turned the page to second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the club is set to keep Cousins as a backup for 2025. Cousins would like to be a starter, but absent an injury, it appears starting slots for the coming season have been filled. Cousins will make $27.5 million in base salary for the 2025 season on the four-year contract he signed as a free agent last offseason. Though he had attended some of the Falcons' voluntary workouts, it's unclear what level of participation Cousins will have with the club this week.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins expected to be at minicamp on Tuesday    Mon Jun 9, 03:59 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is expected to show up for mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, June 10. Cousins attended team workouts in April but was not present for voluntary OTAs in May.

Footballguys view: Cousins signed a four-year deal with Atlanta last March, but the Falcons later used a first-round pick on Michael Penix Jr., and Penix replaced Cousins as the team's starter during the 2024 season. Cousins is guaranteed $27.5 million in salary this season, and the Falcons have said that they are comfortable keeping him on the roster as a backup to Penix. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, Cousins has been less enthusiastic about the prospect of staying with the team, but no trade has materialized, and moving him may take an injury somewhere else at some point in the summer or fall.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins likely to remain in Atlanta?    Wed May 28, 12:21 AM

Updating an earlier report, Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is expected to remain the backup for the Falcons this season, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who notes there's no financial incentive to release Cousins, whose contract contained $100 million in guarantees. Cousins, who Rapoport noted would prefer to be released, did not report for the start of Atlanta's organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, May 27.

Footballguys view: The Falcons are moving forward with Michael Penix Jr. as the starting quarterback, so having Cousins around could be awkward, but it's not the end of the world. That said, Cousins wants to move on. But at this point, he's largely out of options. Unless Aaron Rodgers doesn't sign with the Steelers, there's no current destination. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, "The best play is to wait" for a trade opportunity to emerge. If it doesn't, Rapoport's expectation would become the likely outcome.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins absent from OTAs    Tue May 27, 01:54 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins was not at organized team activities Tuesday, May 27, according to head coach Raheem Morris. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Cousins has made it clear he wants to play elsewhere in 2025.

Footballguys view: Reports over the weekend suggested Cousins could be the Steelers' fallback option if Aaron Rodgers doesn't sign in Pittsburgh. Cousins holds a no-trade clause, but NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the veteran QB has made it clear he wants to play elsewhere in 2025. The Falcons reportedly would like a new team to assume $20 million of Cousins' remaining $37.5 million in guarantees. If the Falcons trade him after June 1, they'll get significant cap relief. We'll continue watching for more.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins Not On Hand For OTA Sessions Tuesday    Tue May 27, 12:35 PM

Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins has participated in aspects of the team's voluntary offseason program. But as the club begins its OTA practices on Tuesday, Cousins is not in the building. "I did not see him today," head coach Raheem Morris said during his Tuesday press conference. "[H]e did not show up in the meetings, so I did not see him today."

Footballguys view: Reports over the weekend suggested Cousins could be the Steelers' fallback option if Aaron Rodgers doesn't sign in Pittsburgh. As PFT notes, Cousins holds a no-trade clause, but NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the veteran QB has made it clear he wants to play elsewhere in 2025. The Falcons reportedly would like a new team to assume $20 million of Cousins' remaining $37.5 million in guarantees. If the Falcons trade him after June 1, they'll get significant cap relief.   Steelers | Report: Kirk Cousins A Possible Fallback Option In Pittsburgh    Mon May 26, 02:19 PM

As the Pittsburgh Steelers wait for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision, they are also keeping an eye on Kirk Cousins' situation with the Atlanta Falcons. Appearing on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Cousins is "at least" on Pittsburgh's "radar" at the moment even though Rodgers remains the team's preferred choice.

Footballguys view: Assuming Rodgers isn't in the mix, Pittsburgh, with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Skylar Thompson on the depth chart, would fit Cousins' criteria of allowing him to start. Fowler acknowledges the Steelers would have to offset some of Cousins' guaranteed money, but the Falcons can save $27.5 million against their 2025 cap if he's traded after June 1. The Steelers haven't indicated a hard deadline for Rodgers to show up, but having him on hand when they report to training camp makes sense.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins could consider waiving his no-trade clause as early as Friday, April 25, following the completion of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, according to Underdog's James Palmer.   Browns | Cleveland may look at two QBs    Mon Feb 10, 12:40 AM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins and Minnesota Vikings QB Daniel Jones could be options for the Cleveland Browns this offseason if they look to add a veteran quarterback, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Footballguys view: The Browns wanted to add a quarterback to compete with Deshaun Watson for the starting job in 2025. But after Waston re-tore his Achilles and underwent a second surgery, the Browns need a starter. Cousins and Jones are just two of the players likely to be available. Cousins remains under contract with the Falcons, but most observers expect them to move on from the veteran this offseason.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins' shoulder contributed to his demise    Tue Feb 4, 01:55 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins (shoulder) recently told Good Morning Football: Overtime that he 'got hit pretty good' in his right shoulder and elbow in Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints and 'never could get it really to where I wanted it.'

Footballguys view: After his late-season benching in Atlanta, Cousins' future with the Falcons is uncertain. First-round rookie Michael Penix Jr. usurped the veteran quarterback in Week 16 of the 2024 season, and the first-year man proved he is Atlanta's QB of the immediate future. Where does that leave the 36-year-old Cousins? The first order of business is getting healthy. Cousins, who believes the lingering effects from the 2023 injury and additional knocks in '24 contributed to his subpar performance, said, "If we can do that, [I] feel like I got a new life ahead of me in pro football." Does that new life include serving as Penix's backup? Or can Cousins find a starting job elsewhere in the coming weeks? Money is a factor. Cousins still has three years remaining on his massive deal with Atlanta and carries a cap number of $40 million in '25. While that complicates matters, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported in December that Cousins' release is the most likely outcome.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins to return as backup?    Fri Jan 10, 10:48 AM

Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said he would be 'very confident' in retaining QB Kirk Cousins to be the team's backup for the 2025 season. Fontenot also indicated that reports saying Cousins would be released before a $10 million roster bonus was due on March 17 were unfounded.

Footballguys view: Cousins has a $40 million cap hit in 2025. He will be the backup to Michael Penix who will be on the second year of his rookie contract (which includes a fifth-year option for the 2024 first rounder). The Falcons may be posturing here as they look for some team that would trade for the veteran quarterback (and his monster contract).

Falcons | Kirk Cousins likely to be released during offseason    Sat Dec 21, 03:15 PM

Several NFL executives believe that the Atlanta Falcons will release QB Kirk Cousins before he is due a $10 million roster bonus March 17, according to multiple sources. However, a Falcons official stated that it was too early to determine if he will be let go, given that QB Michael Penix has a relatively low salary cap number ($5.2 million) for the 2025 season, which would give the club the financial flexibility to keep Cousins.

Footballguys view: Cousins just isn't the same player he used to be, and the pick of Penix is looking smarter and smarter (after being considered controversial) by the moment. If he's on the open market, Cousins is going to get interest from teams in need of a veteran starter. However, this feels like when Matt Ryan's game fell off just a few years ago. It's happened, and there may be no getting it back for Cousins.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins Benched; Michael Penix Jr. Will Be Atlanta's Starter Moving Forward    Tue Dec 17, 09:17 PM

Michael Penix Jr. is the new starting quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, and Kirk Cousins is heading to the bench, coach Raheem Morris announced in a statement Tuesday night. "After review, we have made the decision that Michael Penix will be the Atlanta Falcons' starting quarterback moving forward," Morris said in the statement. "This was a football decision, and we are fully focused on preparing the team for Sunday's game against the New York Giants."

Footballguys view: The Falcons beat the Las Vegas Raiders 15-9 on Monday night to snap a four-game losing streak. But Cousins was just 11-of-17 passing for 112 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He has nine interceptions and just one touchdown pass in his past five games. While the financial implications of this move will be an issue in the future, the change to Penix, who led Washington to the national championship game last season before the Falcons selected him at No. 8 in April's NFL draft, is understandable. Penix completed 65.4 percent of his passes with 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his final year with the Huskies. His 4,903 passing yards were the most in the nation. We'll be digging into how this impacts the supporting cast in coming days, but considering Cousins' five-game skid, it's hard to imagine things getting worse for this offense.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins Will Remain The Starter Despite Another Poor Showing    Sun Dec 8, 08:16 PM

Kirk Cousins had a fourth straight game without a touchdown pass. The Falcons will stick with Cousins as their starter despite the struggles, according to head coach Raheem Morris. "Everything is always discussed when you go watch the tape and do all those types of things," Morris said. "But Kirk Cousins is our quarterback. We'll have the ability to go watch this tape just like we do every single week. Kurt played significantly better than he did the week before."

Footballguys view: Cousins has eight interceptions during Atlanta's current four-game losing streak, with the latest loss coming to the Minnesota Vikings 42-21 on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. Michael Penix Jr., the eighth overall pick in April's NFL draft, has been sitting behind Cousins this season. Cousins was 23-of-37 for 344 yards and two interceptions against his former team. Even with the Falcons down three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, Morris stuck with Cousins and the starters to finish out the game rather than going to Penix. Morris said that was his decision. The Falcons (6-7) have lost four straight games and are now in second place behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team Atlanta swept earlier in the season.

Falcons | Two more INTs for Kirk Cousins    Sun Dec 8, 05:16 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins went 23-for-37 for 344 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14.

Footballguys view: Cousins had a poor fantasy game despite going over 300 yards because both Falcons touchdowns came on the ground, and because of two more bad interceptions. Atlanta has fallen out of first place, but there's no sign that they are going to make the switch to Michael Penix. Perhaps if they lose at Las Vegas next week and the Bucs beat the Chargers to move two games ahead, the team could turn to the rookie with only three games left in the season.

Falcons | Four interceptions for Kirk Cousins    Sun Dec 1, 04:15 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins went 24-for-39 for 245 yards, zero touchdowns and four interceptions against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 13.

Footballguys view: Cousins had multiple terrible interceptions and basically was the reason the Falcons lost. They are still in the division lead, but it is slipping away with a tough matchup at Minnesota next week and the Bucs facing a weak schedule the rest of the way as they chase Atlanta. For the first time all season it feels like Cousins being benched is realistic, so Michael Penix should not be on the waiver wire in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins lifted early in rout    Sun Nov 17, 06:40 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins completed 18-of-27 passes for 173 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Week 11 against the Denver Broncos before being lifted in the fourth quarter of the rout. Rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. finished in mop-up duty.

Footballguys view: Cousins was under pressure all day as the Broncos defense is staking their claim as one of the best in the league. The Falcons are the division leader, but vulnerable if they start to drop winnable games with the Bucs facing a very weak schedule the rest of the way.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins completed 23 of his 29 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-26 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8.

Footballguys view: While it wasn't the 509-yard passing performance he had in the first matchup, Cousins had his way with Tampa Bay's defense and was key to Atlanta's road victory. Worth noting: Cousins completed all nine of his pass attempts in the second half and followed a 13-yard scramble with a key pickup on a quarterback sneak. Cousins' performance fueled a big day for TE Kyle Pitts, who caught four passes for a season-high 91 yards and two touchdowns, the first multi-score game of his NFL career. Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins has completed 11 of his 22 passes when under pressure this season, and his passer rating drops from 116.1 to 43.1 with three interceptions.

Footballguys view: Cousins wasn't sharp, but he didn't get any help from his offensive line against T.J. Watt and company. This isn't a disaster considering the quality of competition and layoff because of injury, but if Cousins is a dud at Philadelphia again next week, it's time to get worried.

Falcons | Kirk Cousins ready for Week 1    Sat Aug 10, 12:13 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins will be 'ready to go' for Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season, he said on Friday, Aug. 10.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Falcons and the veteran quarterback here. Cousins can still play at a high level, and the offense of new OC Zac Robinson should be quite robust for their skill position players. The Falcons have 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. as a future franchise quarterback, but he'll be the backup to Cousins for this season. Footballguys view: Cousins knows the Zac Robinson well after he played under fellow Sean McVay disciple Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota and he avoided the PUP list to open camp after an achilles tear ended his 2023. We don't need to see him in the preseason. It will be exciting to watch #8 overall Michael Penix Jr. play with the first team in his place.
