Updating an earlier report, Las Vegas Raiders QB Kirk Cousins will land a five-year, $172 million deal with the Raiders that in reality is a one-year, fully guaranteed $20 million deal that also contains a club option for two years at $80 million. The Falcons owe him $8.7 million this season and the Raiders will pay $1.3 million. Las Vegas also agreed to pay him a fully guaranteed $10 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2027 new league year.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins has a chance to remain with the Falcons next season, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Footballguys view: ESPN's Adam Schefter, however, reports that Cousins is expected to be released before the start of the new league year in March. The Falcons recently restructured Cousins' contract with the idea that it would be easier for both sides if the four-time Pro Bowler was released sooner rather than later, giving Cousins the optionality that he wanted and adding financial flexibility for Atlanta. Releasing Cousins would further open up the quarterback position in 2026 for the Falcons, whose new regime has not yet committed to Michael Penix Jr. as the starter. Stay tuned.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is expected to be released before the start of the new league year in March. That gives him a choice where or if he wants to play in the 2026 season, league sources said Saturday, Feb. 7.
Footballguys view: Minnesota should be considered a possibility with their need for a veteran quarterback to compete with (or replace?) JJ McCarthy, and the word is that Cousins is open to returning there. The Vikings may go after a big fish like Joe Burrow, but if they aren't successful, Cousins is a viable Plan B, and he would be able to restore a lot of the fantasy value Justin Jefferson lost last season.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins said he is feeling good after playing this season and is looking to play next season.
Footballguys view: Cousins didn't look terrible playing last year for an injured Michael Penix. He's not the same player he used to be, but with bad quarterback play around the league a team could do worse than Cousins. The Falcons may release Cousins after re-working his deal, but there's a chance they'd work hard to bring him back at a better price.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins agreed to a contract revision Tuesday, Jan. 6, on the final two years of his contract. As part of the restructure, there is now a guarantee in the amount of $67.9 million for the 2027 season that vests March 13. The restructure also included reducing his 2026 base salary from a non-guaranteed $35 million to just $2.1 million, a difference of $32.9 million. That amount equals the increase in his 2027 compensation that this amended deal includes, just split differently.
Footballguys view: While Cousins and the Falcons -- who are searching for a new general manager and head coach -- could agree to another amended deal to keep him with Atlanta, one logical possibility posited by salary cap experts is the team moving on from Cousins before March 13 via a post-June 1 release. He appeared in 10 games this season, starting the final seven. Cousins, who threw 10 touchdown passes and five interceptions in seven starts, said after the Week 18 win over the Saints that he would like to keep playing and kept the door open to return to Atlanta.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins went 18-for-32 for 180 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18.
Footballguys view: Cousins rattled off four straight wins to end the season to finish tied with the Panthers and the Bucs in the standings. They lost the three-team tiebreaker because they were swept by the Panthers. Michael Penix is uncertain for Week 1 next season. The Falcons have already guaranteed a $10 roster bonus for Cousins, but his $35 million salary is a lot for a player who didn't seem to be in their future plans a month ago.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins completed 21-of-33 passes for 234 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 13 against the New York Jets, and he did not have a rushing attempt.
Footballguys view: The Falcons chose to punt instead of trusting the offense on two fourth and shorts near midfield in a picture of what they think of Cousins. He's only a desperation QB2/Superflex option against the Seahawks next week while we wait for news of when he'll get Drake London back.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins completed 16-of-23 passes for 199 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints, and he ran twice for five yards.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins takes the reins of the offense, with QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee) going on the Reserve/Injured list. Cousins will face the New Orleans Saints in Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints, who have allowed teams to complete 65.9 percent of passes with a 84.6 QB rating with 99 first downs allowed, 20 pass plays of 20 or more yards and 5+ plays of 40 or more yards through the air.
Footballguys view: Falcons HC Raheem Morris said "it's fair to say [the offense will] look different" with Cousins as the starter. Cousins is terribly inaccurate this year in limited snaps (and one start) this season. It's a downgrade for the Falcons' passing game, and defenses should stack the line to stuff Bijan Robinson going forward.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins completed 6-of-14 passes for 48 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Week 11 against the Carolina Panthers, and he ran for two yards after replacing the injured QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee).

Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee) left the Week 11 game against the Carolina Panthers in the third quarter due to a knee injury. He is considered questionable to return. QB Kirk Cousins has replaced him.
Footballguys view: As we saw when Cousins started in Week 8 against Miami, the veteran quarterback is a downgrade from Penix even though the second year quarterback has been inconsistent. This could be bad for everyone in the Falcons offense if Penix is going to be out for an extended time. Cousins would face the Saints next week if he starts for an injured Penix.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins completed 21 of 31 for 173 yards with no touchdowns or no interceptions in Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins.
Footballguys view: To say that Cousins looked rusty would be an understatement. The team went three and out on four of their first five possessions and only managed a field goal on the other against a team that had allowed at least 27 points to everyone except the Jets, and they were still able to score 21. Atlanta scored 10, and the touchdown only came after the score was 34-3. Cousins is no threat to Michael Penix's job after the second year quarterback missed Week 8 due to a bone bruise on his leg. We'll monitor practice reports heading into the matchup at New England to keep you updated on who will start for Atlanta, and whether Drake London will be able to play after getting scratched at game time because of the hip injury.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is expected to start against the Miami Dolphins in Week 8.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins appears 'highly likely' to start Week 8's game versus the Miami Dolphins because QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee) is still recovering from a bone bruise in his left knee, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: Penix played through the bone bruise in Week 7, but it appears the team is going to play it safe with their second-year quarterback this week. Cousins has been practicing with the first team all week, and he gets his first start of the season against the Dolphins. He's not the same player he used to be, but with six teams on bye in Week 8, Cousins could get consideration in start-2 QB/superflex leagues.

Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. completed 18-of-36 passes for 172 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers, and he ran twice for nine yards. QB Kirk Cousins came on to finish the blowout loss.
Footballguys view: Penix was uneven in Week 3 after having no turnover-worthy plays through two weeks going in. His communication from the sideline was spotty in his helmet per the broadcast, but that can't explain everything. Washington's pass defense has been one of the easier units to solve the last two weeks and they are up next, but the Panthers pass defense wasn't highly regarded coming into this one. If Penix plays like this again next week, questions are going to be raised about whether Kirk Cousins should take over.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins could be a trade target for the Los Angeles Rams if QB Matthew Stafford (back) continues to deal with a back injury, in the opinion of Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Footballguys view: The Rams have Jimmy Garoppolo to start if Stafford can't play. This back injury is concerning and something Stafford will have to deal with all season long. Cousins isn't what he used to be, but he's well versed in the Shanahan system both the Falcons and Rams have variations of. We'll see if something develops later in the preseason.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins said he felt a little 'misled' when the Falcons took QB Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, in the first episode of Netflix's 'Quarterback.' Cousins said he was aware the Falcons might draft a quarterback, but definitely not that high. He wasn't informed about the Penix pick until a phone call by offensive coordinator Zac Robinson while Atlanta was on the clock. 'Certainly, if I had the information around free agency, it certainly would've affected my decision,' Cousins said on the first episode of the season. 'I had no reason to leave Minnesota with how much we loved it there if both teams are going to be drafting a quarterback high. But I've also learned in 12 years in this league that you're not entitled to anything. It's all about being able to earn your spot and prove yourself.'
Footballguys view: Cousins led the Falcons to a 6-3 start last season before taking a hard hit to his right arm in Week 10. The Falcons' season took a sharp downward turn beginning with that game. They eventually benched Cousins in Week 16. Penix took over and played solidly, though the team went 1-2 in those games and missed the playoffs. For now, Cousins will serve as the backup to Penix. But Atlanta would surely listen to trade offers if they're out there, with the hope that a team is willing to take on a chunk of his guaranteed $27.5Â million salary.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins reported for mandatory minicamp Tuesday, June 10, according to The Insiders. 'We're moving forward and it's about how we as a team and as a quarterback room can be the best we can be in 2025,' Cousins said.
Footballguys view: While Atlanta has turned the page to second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the club is set to keep Cousins as a backup for 2025. Cousins would like to be a starter, but absent an injury, it appears starting slots for the coming season have been filled. Cousins will make $27.5 million in base salary for the 2025 season on the four-year contract he signed as a free agent last offseason. Though he had attended some of the Falcons' voluntary workouts, it's unclear what level of participation Cousins will have with the club this week.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is expected to show up for mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, June 10. Cousins attended team workouts in April but was not present for voluntary OTAs in May.
Footballguys view: Cousins signed a four-year deal with Atlanta last March, but the Falcons later used a first-round pick on Michael Penix Jr., and Penix replaced Cousins as the team's starter during the 2024 season. Cousins is guaranteed $27.5 million in salary this season, and the Falcons have said that they are comfortable keeping him on the roster as a backup to Penix. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, Cousins has been less enthusiastic about the prospect of staying with the team, but no trade has materialized, and moving him may take an injury somewhere else at some point in the summer or fall.

Updating an earlier report, Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is expected to remain the backup for the Falcons this season, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who notes there's no financial incentive to release Cousins, whose contract contained $100 million in guarantees. Cousins, who Rapoport noted would prefer to be released, did not report for the start of Atlanta's organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, May 27.
Footballguys view: The Falcons are moving forward with Michael Penix Jr. as the starting quarterback, so having Cousins around could be awkward, but it's not the end of the world. That said, Cousins wants to move on. But at this point, he's largely out of options. Unless Aaron Rodgers doesn't sign with the Steelers, there's no current destination. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, "The best play is to wait" for a trade opportunity to emerge. If it doesn't, Rapoport's expectation would become the likely outcome.

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins was not at organized team activities Tuesday, May 27, according to head coach Raheem Morris. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Cousins has made it clear he wants to play elsewhere in 2025.
Footballguys view: Reports over the weekend suggested Cousins could be the Steelers' fallback option if Aaron Rodgers doesn't sign in Pittsburgh. Cousins holds a no-trade clause, but NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the veteran QB has made it clear he wants to play elsewhere in 2025. The Falcons reportedly would like a new team to assume $20 million of Cousins' remaining $37.5 million in guarantees. If the Falcons trade him after June 1, they'll get significant cap relief. We'll continue watching for more.

Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins has participated in aspects of the team's voluntary offseason program. But as the club begins its OTA practices on Tuesday, Cousins is not in the building. "I did not see him today," head coach Raheem Morris said during his Tuesday press conference. "[H]e did not show up in the meetings, so I did not see him today."

As the Pittsburgh Steelers wait for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision, they are also keeping an eye on Kirk Cousins' situation with the Atlanta Falcons. Appearing on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Cousins is "at least" on Pittsburgh's "radar" at the moment even though Rodgers remains the team's preferred choice.
Footballguys view: Assuming Rodgers isn't in the mix, Pittsburgh, with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Skylar Thompson on the depth chart, would fit Cousins' criteria of allowing him to start. Fowler acknowledges the Steelers would have to offset some of Cousins' guaranteed money, but the Falcons can save $27.5 million against their 2025 cap if he's traded after June 1. The Steelers haven't indicated a hard deadline for Rodgers to show up, but having him on hand when they report to training camp makes sense.
