Saints | Derek Carr placed on retired list Wed Jun 4, 04:35 PM
New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr was placed on the Reserve/Retired list Tuesday, June 3.
Footballguys view: The NFL reserve/retired list is used for players who have officially retired from the league but still have a contract with a team. When a player retires and is placed on this list, the team's contract with them is tolled, meaning the contract remains in place, and the team retains the player's rights if they choose to unretire. As of now, that isn't in the cards for Carr. We'll see if he's in that same place next year. |

Retired New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr was reportedly receiving some interest from at least two teams around the start of free agency in March, more than a month before he announced his retirement due to a shoulder issue.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Carr didn't seem to be on good terms with new Saints HC Kellen Moore, and some out there are questioning if his retirement is all health related. Could he return in 2026? Some think that's unlikely, but things change quickly in this league. If Carr wants to play in the future after taking a break in 2025, a few teams would have interest again. |

Retired QB Derek Carr (Saints) is 'extremely unlikely' to unretire in 2026, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, who cited 'sources with knowledge of the situation.' Carr is already making other professional plans, though it's entirely possible he could change his mind once fully healthy.
Footballguys view: While Carr eventually will land on the Saints' reserve/retired list, an unretirement in 2026 would likely trigger an immediate release of his rights, given that his 2025 salary of $30 million would immediately hit the cap. At most, the Saints would finagle a late-round pick from a team interested in signing him. And if he eventually has a change of heart, Given that the shelf life for quarterbacks has extended deep into the 30s and, for some, beyond their 40th birthdays, the 34-year-old Carr could still play if/when his shoulder is healed. So, even if it's unlikely for now, we may revisit this story down the road. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr officially announced his retirement from the NFL Saturday, May 10, according to a press release from the team.
Footballguys view: Carr's retirement leaves the Saints with three quarterbacks, who have a combined record of 0-7 as NFL starters, on their roster. The holdovers from last year are 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener. When Carr missed time with injuries last season, Rattler started six games, and Haener started one. The Saints went 0-7 in those games, with Rattler and Haener averaging 5.8 yards per pass. The newcomer is second-round rookie Tyler Shough, who is 25 years old after a long college career that saw him spend three years at Oregon, three years at Texas Tech, and one year at Louisville. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, the Saints knew Carr had a significant injury to his throwing shoulder when they drafted Shough with the 40th pick overall, which indicates that they see Shough as Carr's heir apparent. We see it the same. At No. 31, Shough is the top Saints QB on the Footballguys 2025 Projections. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) reportedly wants to try to play through the shoulder injury he believes he suffered in Week 14 of last season, according to NFL Network's Jane Slater. Per Slater, Carr has met with the team doctor twice in recent weeks and did not know the shoulder was hurt before because he only resumed throwing a football a few weeks ago as he began to ramp up for offseason work.
Footballguys view: There is no timeline for a decision, but Slater reported one is expected "sooner rather than later." For those just getting up to speed on this, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported last month that Carr's shoulder ailment (on his throwing arm) could put his 2025 campaign at risk. The 34-year-old is reportedly reluctant to undergo surgery after previously having a procedure on the same arm. With Carr's status for 2025 in limbo, the Saints' QB room is currently stocked with 2023 fourth-rounder Jake Haener and 2024 fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler, who each started in Carr's place last season, along with rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough. Stay tuned. We'll be watching this one closely. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) said he has undergone an MRI on his injured shoulder and has been in consistent contact with team about the situation.
Footballguys view: Carr's comments came in the context of rebuffing supposed rumors that the injury was fabricated. "I have an MRI report to prove it," Carr said. "The team knows about it. We've been in constant communication. There's nothing wrong. We're figuring it out, and we're going to go forward with that. Is that OK?" The comments are Carr's first since NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the quarterback suffered a shoulder injury that could put his 2025 season in jeopardy. General manager Mickey Loomis said last week that the club was waiting for "clarity" on Carr's shoulder. With Carr's future in question, the Saints drafted 25-year-old quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr agreed to a restructured contract that saves the team roughly $30 million in salary-cap space, according to sources Saturday, March 8.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr is expected to remain with the team under new head coach Kellen Moore, according to sources Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Footballguys view: The Saints are in salary cap hell, so getting rid of Carr (with $50 million in dead money) makes zero sense. He'll the be the starter, and then the team will look to shed cap after the 2025 season ....which will still be difficult. Moore has his work cut out for him, and the Saints are at least a few years away from being able to really compete. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr has $10 million guaranteed for 2025 with another $30 million scheduled to kick in March 15. His release would only save his cap-strapped team a couple of million dollars and the team is unlikely to be in a position to draft a blue-chip quarterback, which makes it likely that Carr will remain the starting quarterback for at least one more season.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr is likely to open the 2025 season as the starter because the team would only save a couple of million dollars if they cut him. He has $10 million guaranteed for 2025 with another $30 million scheduled to kick in March 15.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr likely will receive interest from a few teams this offseason if the Saints decide to release him, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Footballguys view: Money will be an issue here. Carr has a $10 million roster bonus and another $30 million in base salary that becomes guaranteed three days into the league year in March. That will be the deadline for New Orleans to make a decision. USA Today noted that Carr has made it known that he would refuse to accept a pay cut. While the quarterback has leverage here, his future will ultimately be in Kellen Moore's hands if the Saints officially hire him as their head coach, as expected. Carr will be back if Moore can see a path forward with him at quarterback. If the new coach wants a new QB, the Saints could make it happen. |

Saints quarterback Derek Carr said he has had "super positive" conversations with team leadership regarding his future after sitting out seven games in 2024. He has two years left on the free-agent deal he signed before the 2023 season. Carr, whose contract average of $37.5 million ranks in a tie for 15th at his position, according to Over The Cap, said he would not be open to a pay cut. "I wouldn't take a pay cut," he told ESPN.
Footballguys view: Carr is due $40 million next year and will count $51.45 million against the salary cap in 2025 if the Saints don't restructure his contract. Carr sat out the final four games of the season because of two fractures in his non-throwing hand and sat out three games earlier in the season because of a strained oblique. Carr said "it sucked" to be on the sideline as the Saints (5-11) lost the final four games of the season. He said his focus now is getting back to full health while the Saints hold a search for a head coach. Carr was 5-5 as a starter in 2024, and the Saints did not win a game with backup quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (hand) is expected to participate in a simulated game this week to see if he has a chance to play in Week 18, according to interim head coach Darren Rizzi.
Footballguys view: While it's his non-throwing hand, it would be a surprise if the Saints force Carr into the lineup, given the nature of his injury. The expectation here is Spencer Ratter will get another spot in the final against the Buccaneers, but we'll continue to watch for more. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (hand) did not take part in practice for the third straight day on Friday, Dec. 27, and was ruled out for Week 17.
Footballguys view: Head coach Darren Rizzi said Spencer Rattler will start against the Raiders with Carr out again. As SI.com suggested, with them being out of the playoffs for the fourth straight year, the final two games are an excellent opportunity to look at some of the talent in their building. That starts with Rattler. |

It seems like the rookie Rattler will be out there for the Saints as they play at home in fantasy championship week. Downgrade all your Saints assets accordingly. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (hand) underwent further examination recently, and he's unlikely to return this season. His left hand is fractured in multiple places, and he's unable to withstand contact.
Footballguys view: Interim coach Darren Rizzi said on Monday that he was waiting to announce his Week 16 starter on the chance Carr could be cleared in time after missing just one week. Now, it appears his choices are down to Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. As NFL.com's Kevin Patra suggested, based on Sunday's performances in the narrow loss to Washington, it's not much of a choice. Haener got the start and couldn't move the ball, with the offense generating 38 net yards at halftime. Rattler entered at halftime and immediately jumpstarted the offense. The Saints scored on all four second-half possessions, including a final-second touchdown. A miss on the potential game-winning two-point try was the only thing that stopped New Orleans from stealing a victory. With a 1 percent chance of making the playoffs, it makes sense to give Rattler a longer look to see if he could be an option in 2025. |

Darren Rizzi said it's too soon in the week to project whether Saints QB Derek Carr could play Monday at Green Bay. But Rizzi did say it "wouldn't be a reach" to expect Carr to be cleared to play at some point before the season ends.
Footballguys view: Rizzi added he would wait to declare which QB would take the first practice reps this week and potentially start if Carr can't play. While Jake Haener started Sunday's game against Washington, Spencer Rattler finished it. Haener finished 4-of-10 passing for 49 yards with an interception, while Rattler was 10-of-21 for 135 yards with a touchdown. Obviously, all signs point to Rattler, but Rizzi said since the Saints have a bonus day before Monday's game, he'll wait to make a decision -- or at least an announcement. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (hand) suffered a significant fracture in his non-throwing hand and is 'almost certainly' expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to sources Monday, Dec. 9.
Footballguys view: The Saints may not place Carr on injured reserve, keeping the window of opportunity open. But he'll be out the next few weeks regardless. This is almost certainly season-ending based on where we are in the season. The next question is whether Jake Haener, who has replaced Carr in the two games he left early this year, or Spencer Rattler, who started the three full games Carr missed with an oblique injury, will start going forward. |
Derek Carr player page
Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (hand) is feared to have suffered a fractured left hand, source said Sunday, Dec. 8. The hand is his non-throwing hand.
Footballguys view: In addition to the hand injury, Carr suffered a potential concussion, putting his status for next week's game against the Washington Commanders in question. Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi said after the game that Carr was going through tests to determine the severity of the hand injury. Still, multiple outlets report there's concern about a fracture. This is the second time Carr has left a game with an injury this season; he exited in the fourth quarter of a Week 5 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with an oblique injury and missed the next three games before returning in Week 9. Jake Haener replaced Carr in both the Chiefs and Giants games but did not attempt a pass in Sunday's win. The Saints went with rookie Spencer Rattler in the three games that Carr missed, going 0-3. We'll watch for the plan going forward, assuming Carr misses time. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (concussion, hand) left the Week 14 game against the New York Giants to be evaluated for concussion and a hand injury. He completed 20-of-31 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and one interception with 12 rushing yards before departing.
Footballguys view: Jake Haener replaced him. The team fears that he suffered a fracture in his non-throwing hand. The Saints are only two games out of first place and they finish the season with a matchup against the division leading Bucs, but it looks like their hopes are going to rest with Jake Haener. |
