Raiders | Two players waived    Mon May 14, 06:29 PM

The Oakland Raiders have waived QB Rhett Bomar and TE Andre Hardy.

Footballguys view: Bomar has bounced around the league during his short pro career. He may get a training camp invite to be a camp arm but is a longshot to be on any final roster.

Vikings | Want open competition for starting QB job    Fri Apr 29, 06:01 PM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team wants QBs Christian Ponder, Joe Webb and Rhett Bomar to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp. Frazier also did not rule out the possibility of signing a veteran quarterback once free agency begins.

Footballguys view: It wouldn't be a bad idea for Ponder to sit for a year or so as he adjusts to the speed of the Pro game. Though he has more experience in a pro style offense than most of the QB class, there are some concerns about his ability to read the defense and feel pressure.

Vikings | In need of quarterback depth    Fri Mar 4, 06:52 AM

The Minnesota Vikings have just Joe Webb and Rhett Bomar on roster at quarterback, reports Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins, of The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Footballguys view: We expect the team to address the QB position through the draft or free agency. There's a good chance the team could use both avenues to add more depth to the position.

Vikings | Rhett Bomar signed    Wed Dec 22, 09:42 AM

Updating previous reports, the Minnesota Vikings have signed QB Rhett Bomar off the New York Giants' practice squad, reports Judd Zulgad, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With all the injuries to the quarterback position the Vikings are looking to add depth with this move. Bomar is a gunslinger who started his college career at Oklahoma, but transferred to Sam Houston State. He is athletic, has a strong arm, and actually played quite a bit like Brett Favre when he was in college.

Vikings | Will sign Rhett Bomar    Mon Dec 20, 02:13 PM

The Minnesota Vikings will sign QB Rhett Bomar off the New York Giants' practice squad, a source told The Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo.

Footballguys view: Bomar is the gunslinger from Sam Houston State who played like Brett Favre when he was in college. He's unlikely to see the field for the Vikings, but will be another body at the quarterback position behind Joe Webb and Patrick Ramsey.

Giants | Seven players added to practice squad    Sun Sep 5, 03:42 PM

The New York Giants have announced they have re-signed QB Rhett Bomar, TE Jake Ballard, TE Bear Pascoe, OL Jim Cordle, DL Nate Collins, CB Seth Williams and SS Sha'reff Rashad to their practice squad.

Footballguys view: Bomar didn't play terribly in the preseason, but once Sage Rosenfels was acquired in a trade it pushed him to the practice squad.

Giants | Rhett Bomar, 13 others waived    Sat Sep 4, 06:23 PM

The New York Giants have waived QB Rhett Bomar, DT Jay Alford, RB Andre Brown, RB Gartrell Johnson, WR Tim X. Brown, OL Herb Taylor, OL Todd Londolt, DL Alex Hall, DL Nate Collins, DB Seth Williams, DB Courtney Brown, DB Matt O'Hanlon and DB Sha'reff Rashad, reports Michael Eisen, of Giants.com. The team terminated the contracts of OL Guy Whimper and S John Busing.

Footballguys view: With the addition of Sage Rosenfels the Giants didn't need the services of Bomar anymore. They could add him to the practice squad to continue his development. Andre Brown getting cut is a bit of a surprise to us. With so many RBs going down with injury across the league it wouldn't surprise us to see another team quickly scoop up Brown.

Giants | Rhett Bomar to be waived    Sat Sep 4, 12:59 PM

The New York Giants will waive QB Rhett Bomar, a source told The Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo.

Giants | Looking at QB options if needed    Wed Sep 1, 01:25 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin indicated that the team has been looking at available quarterbacks in case they do not comfortable with QB Rhett Bomar has their primary backup quarterback, reports Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News. 'Our guys have been working on this for a couple of weeks,' he said. 'I just think that we're investigating all our options.'

Footballguys view: Rhett Bomar hasn't looked terrible this preseason, but the Giants may want to upgrade the depth behind starter Eli Manning.

Giants | Rhett Bomar to have first shot at No. 2 QB    Wed Sep 1, 01:28 AM

New York Giants QB Rhett Bomar will have the first chance to earn the No. 2 quarterback job behind QB Eli Manning, reports Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News. QB Dominic Randolph will start out as the team's No. 3 quarterback.

Footballguys view: Adam Schefter has revealed that the Giants are one of the teams interested in Matt Leinart, so Bomar's stay as the #2 QB could be short.

Giants | Rhett Bomar getting closer to No. 2 QB job    Fri Aug 27, 01:36 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin indicated that QB Rhett Bomar has closed the gap between himself and QB Jim Sorgi for the No. 2 quarterback job, reports Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News. 'Oh, he's improved, he's done a nice job,' Coughlin said of Bomar. 'He's still got a ways to go, but he's in the driver's seat as far as the guy who is taking all the snaps.'

Footballguys view: Bomar made some mistakes as the Giants starter, but he didn't hang his head and kept trying to make plays out on the field. We like his development so far and there's a chance he could beat out Jim Sorgi for the backup job behind Eli Manning.

New York Giants QB Rhett Bomar will start in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 21, and is expected to play most of the game, reports Giants.com's Michael Eisen.

Footballguys view: With Jim Sorgi ailing and Eli Manning's head gashed open, Bomar has a golden opportunity to make a positive impression on not just the Giants brass, but the other 31 teams, too. We'll be watching.

Giants | Eli Manning could take non-contact drills    Thu Aug 19, 04:37 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning (head) can't put a helmet on over the cut on his head, but head coach Tom Coughlin might let him run a few non-contact drills wearing a baseball cap, reports the New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano. Manning is expected back next week, but with QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder) expected to miss the next two to three weeks, Coughlin might use Manning to help ease the burden on QBs Dominic Randolph and Rhett Bomar.

Footballguys view: Manning is a savvy veteran, and the Giants don't want to risk further injury to their star quarterback. He'll be shut down for this week's preseason game, but should be back for the all important third preseason game.

Giants | Rhett Bomar on roster bubble    Mon Jul 19, 05:22 PM

New York Giants QB Rhett Bomar will be on the roster bubble during training camp, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Ohm Youngmisuk.

Footballguys view: The Giants added longtime Peyton Manning backup Jim Sorgi this offseason, so Bomar may have to stick around on the practice squad and continue to develop. The former Sam Houston State (and Oklahoma transfer) has a gunslinger's mentality and the arm strength to make any throw in the NFL. He has reportedly shown flashes of brilliance this offseason, but his reps are quite limited as the third-string quarterback.

Giants | Bomar likely will be No. 3 QB    Tue Mar 9, 01:31 PM

Updating a previous report, Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants QB Rhett Bomar likely will be the No. 3 quarterback next season.

Footballguys view: Bomar will compete with the newly signed Jim Sorgi for the backup job behind Eli Manning. Bomar is a gunslinger that takes a lot of chances with the football, while Sorgi is more cautious with the ball.

Giants | Agree to deal with Sorgi    Tue Mar 9, 12:41 PM

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports via Twitter that the New York Giants have agreed to a deal with free-agent QB Jim Sorgi (Colts).

Footballguys view: Sorgi goes from being the backup to Peyton Manning to being the backup to Eli Manning. He will compete next year with Rhett Bomar to win the second-string QB spot for the Giants.

Giants | Week 17 Inactives    Sun Jan 3, 11:44 AM

The New York Giants have declared DL Chris Canty, CB Corey Webster, OT Kareem McKenzie, WR Mario Manningham, QB Rhett Bomar, OG Rich Seubert, TE Scott Chandler, SS Sha'reff Rashad inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Ahmad Bradshaw is active today, but it's difficult to trust him with the news that he has broken bones in both feet. Expect Gantrell Johnson to see more time, but none of the Giants' backs are great bets against the Minnesota front.

Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Giants have signed practice squad SS Sha'reff Rashad and QB Rhett Bomar to their active roster. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Giants | Will not add Bomar to roster    Sat Oct 10, 04:34 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants will not sign practice squad QB Rhett Bomar to their active roster. The decision seems to indicate QB Eli Manning (foot) may be able to play in Week 5.

Footballguys view: With a banged up Eli Manning, the Giants may decide to lean on their ground game more than ever. That way they can drain the clock and pound out what should be an easy win against the Raiders.

Giants | Bomar and Woodson waived    Sat Sep 5, 12:49 PM

Mike Garafolo, from the Newark Star-Ledger, notes the cuts are trickling in as the Giants must get down to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday. QBs Rhett Bomar and Andre' Woodson have been waived, a source said. The same source said the Giants are hoping Bomar will clear waivers and make it onto the practice squad.

Footballguys view: Both Woodson and Bomar struggled in the Giants preseason finale, so this isn't that much of a surprise. Woodson has been a disappointment the last two years, and may have a hard time catching on with another team. Bomar is a gunslinger with good leadership and moxie on the playing field. He is very raw as a quarteback, and must improve his decision making skills because he too often forces ill-advised passes.

Giants | Woodson, Bomar struggle Thursday    Fri Sep 4, 12:24 AM

The Associated Press reports New York Giants QB Andre Woodson and QB Rhett Bomar, both competing for the No. 3 quarterback job, each struggled during the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3. Woodson finished the game 6-for-19 for 98 yards with an interception while Bomar was 2-for-7 for 40 yards with an interception.

Giants | Bomar battles Woodson for 3rd QB    Thu Sep 3, 11:52 AM

Mike Garafolo, from the Newark Star-Ledger, reports Rhett Bomar has taken only nine snaps and thrown just two passes in two drives this preseason. That will change Thursday night. The fifth-round pick said he's gotten a lot more comfortable with the offense in practice over the past couple of weeks, but he hasn't been able to test those advancements in a live game against a pass rush. If he can show at least a little promise Thursday night, it might be enough to beat out Andre' Woodson, last year's sixth-round pick who has not taken his improved practice performance to the playing field.

Footballguys view: The team hasn't been happy with the lack of development in Andre Woodson's game, so the opportunity is there for Bomar to make the final roster. Bomar has a gun-slinger's mentality, will challenge a defense with his deep arm and quick release, and can make plays with his feet. The Giants are looking for upside here, and they may favor Bomar's potential over what they've seen from Woodson.

Giants | Bomar contract details    Wed Jun 24, 07:46 PM

Updating a previous report, Mike Garafolo, of the Newark Star-Ledger, reports the New York Giants have signed fifth-round draft choice QB Rhett Bomar to a four-year deal worth $1.935 million. The deal also includes a $185,183 signing bonus. There are also escalators in the contract that can increase the value.

Giants | Bomar signed    Wed Jun 24, 04:25 PM

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports the New York Giants have signed fifth-round draft choice QB Rhett Bomar. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Rhett Bomar is the confident, gunslinging QB that originally started his college career at Oklahoma. He was dismissed from the Sooners squad and ended up at Sam Houston State. Against lower competition he didn't put up monster numbers, but did display a quick release, decent accuracy, and the ability to throw on the run. He has a lot of moxie and swagger on the football field and knows how to lead his team during crunch time. Bomar must learn how to not force the ball into coverage and just throw it away when a play isn't there. He also needs to work on his timing and touch passes if he wants to make the most of his NFL potential. He will battle Andre Woodson for the Giants 3rd QB spot behind Eli Manning and David Carr.

Giants | Defend Bomar selection    Mon Apr 27, 09:39 AM

Mike Garafolo, of The Star-Ledger, reports New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese defended the pick of QB Rhett Bomar in the NFL Draft by saying Bomar or QB Andre' Woodson could serve as an insurance policy for a potential departure of QB David Carr down the road. 'We drafted Woodson last year. We still like Woodson,' Reese said before he could even be asked about what Bomar's arrival means for Woodson. 'I know people will start to write him off right away, but that's not true. Who knows how long David Carr will be here?' Head coach Tom Coughlin added Bomar represented good value for the team. 'The scouts had very good grades on Bomar,' Coughlin said. 'There were a lot of people in the room who, when Bomar was picked, stood up and talked about the value of that individual at that time.'

Footballguys view: Rhett Bomar is a fiery competitor with a passion for the game of football. He has a quick release, and is cool under pressure. Bomar is a gambling QB that likes to force the ball into coverage, and it's no surprise that his favorite QB growing up was Brett Favre.
