Eagles | Saquon Barkley better in second half of games Fri Jul 4, 10:08 AM
Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley rushed for 1,245 yards and eight touchdowns during the second half of games during the 2024 season. He posted 760 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in the first half of games.
Footballguys view: The Eagles will want to keep Barkley fresh after a 480+ touch season when the postseason is added to his final numbers. 2024 fourth round pick Will Shipley had a great spring and should play the Kenneth Gainwell role at a minimum after Gainwell signed with Pittsburgh in free agency. AJ Dillon is coming back from a neck injury and could be the early down backup, but Shipley is talented enough to claim that role too. When you are putting together a list of backup running backs to target late in your draft, Shipley should be on it. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley totaled 436 carries, including the playoffs, during the 2024 season, which matched the highest number of carries in a season since 2000 -- former Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray logged an identical 436 carries in 2014.
Footballguys view: Despite the massive workload, Barkley claims there are no aftereffects. "I feel really good," he said last month. "Like I'm entering my prime." But the concern is obvious. As Footballguy Gary Davenport pointed out, of the 30 running backs to surpass 370 carries in a season since 1980, only one, Eric Dickerson in 1984 (when he set the NFL all-time rushing record), gained more rushing yards the following year. Forty percent saw their production drop by over half. That said, Barkley is still this year's RB1, according to current ADP data, going with the second pick overall. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB P Saquon Barkley has been calculated when balancing training and recovery this offseason, ensuring he's as fresh as possible when players report to training camp. However, multiple players publicly expressed the need for the offense to evolve from last year's run-heavy attack, according to Andrew DiCecco of Inside The Birds.
Footballguys view: Recovery only becomes more critical as we age. And Barkley, coming off 482 touches and heading into his age-28 season, knows that. The Eagles can spend all offseason talking about their plans. But when the games kick off, they'll likely lean on their superstar running back the same way they did last year. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley rushed 25 times for 57 yards in Super Bowl LIX to set the NFL season rushing record, postseason included, surpassing the mark of 2,476 yards set by Terrell Davis.
Footballguys view: Heading into the matchup, Barkley, named the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday, needed only 30 yards to move past Davis' 1998 mark. He did so on the final play of the first half with a 2-yard run. Barkley's 2,447 yards were second all-time in a single season heading into the game, having surpassed Davis' 1997 showing of 2,331 yards in last month's NFC Championship Game win over the Washington Commanders. He became the first player in NFL history to record over 2,500 rushing yards in a season, including the playoffs. Expect Barkley to be in the 1.01 conversation as we head into the 2025 draft season. |

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts completed 17 of his 22 passes 221 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran 11 times for 72 yards and a score in a 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. RB Saquon Barkley rushed 25 times for 57 yards and caught six passes for 40 yards. WR DeVonta Smith had four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown, and WR A.J. Brown added three grabs for 43 yards and a score. CB Cooper DeJean returned an interception for a touchdown, and DE Josh Sweat had 2.5 of Phildelphia's six sacks.
Footballguys view: While Hurts, whose cell phone screen saver for the past two years has been a photo of him walking off the Super Bowl LVII field in Arizona surrounded by yellow and red confetti after losing to the Chiefs, was absolutely stellar en route to earning Super Bowl MVP honors, the defense shouldn't be overlooked. The Eagles forced three turnovers and held Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense to 275 yards. "This is the ultimate team game. You can't be great without the greatness of others. Great performance by everybody -- offense, defense, special teams," head coach Nick Sirianni said while holding up the Lombardi Trophy. "We didn't really ever care what anyone thought about how we won, or their opinions. All we want to do is win." |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley was named The Associated Press' Offensive Player of the Year Thursday, Feb. 6.
Footballguys view: Let's call this the "best offensive player that isn't a quarterback" award. Barkley's true potential was reached in a diverse running game that leveraged the best offensive line in the league into one of the best single season performances by a running back in NFL history. If the Eagles can win Super Bowl LIX, he'll surely be a big reason why. |

WR Britain Covey (neck) was limited during practice. The Eagles did not hold a practice Wednesday, so the practice report is an estimation.
Footballguys view: The Eagles have a lot of time before they have to be ready to play the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, so this bye-week injury report isn't determinative. That said, Smith's injury bears watching. As Profootballtalk.com notes, Smith was not listed on Philadelphia's report last week. He was on the field for 83 percent of the Eagles' offensive snaps in the NFC Championship Game and caught all four targets for 45 yards. Gainwell, who has to work through the concussion protocol, also bears watching. Goedert, Dickerson, and Jurgens also bear watching. Running back Saquon Barkley and receiver A.J. Brown should be non-issues, but we'll follow up as needed. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley was awarded a $250,000 bonus for the Eagles winning the NFC Championship Game, and he could receive another $250,000 if they win the Super Bowl.
Footballguys view: Barkley originally signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles last March after his six-year run with the New York Giants ended. He proceeded to post career numbers as Philadelphia's top offensive weapon, becoming just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for at least 2,000 yards. Barkley ended the 2024 regular season just 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's all-time single-season mark. Barkley was also fantasy's RB1 overall through Week 17 (Jahmyr Gibbs moved past him when Barkley sat out Week 18) and will be a prime candidate to be the No. 1 pick overall in 2025 drafts. |

The Philadelphia Eagles pounded the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 26, advancing to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. QB Jalen Hurts completed 20-of-28 passes for 246 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing for three scores. RB Saquon Barkley ran 15 times for 118 yards and three scores, as well as a 4-yard catch on two targets, while RB Will Shipley added four runs for 77 yards and a TD. WR A.J. Brown led the way with 96 receiving yards and a score on six grabs and eight targets, while TE Dallas Goedert posted seven receptions for 85 yards on eight targets with two runs for 13 yards. WR DeVonta Smith chipped in with four grabs for 45 yards. LB Zack Baun led the way on defense with game highs of 12 total stops and eight solo tackles, with a fumble recovery and a tackle for loss.
Footballguys view: The Commanders turnovers set up the Eagles with short fields all day and everything clicked for Philadelphia. The offense goes into the Super Bowl on a high note even though Jalen Hurts is nursing some sort of knee injury. Baun's performance on defense was key for a unit that lost his fellow starting linebacker Nakobe Dean to a knee injury in the wild card round. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley recorded 1,328 rushing yards before contact during the regular season, which led the NFL in that category.
Footballguys view: This isn't a huge surprise with Barkley working behind Footballguy Matt Bitonti's top-ranked run-blocking offensive line. His overall totals also bear this out. While Barkley fell short of Eric Dickerson's regular-season rushing record when he sat against the Giants, NBCSports.com notes that he now has a chance at the overall single-season rushing record, including regular-season and playoff games. With 2,005 regular-season rushing yards and now 324 in two playoff games, Barkley has 2,329 rushing yards this year. That's third-most in a season behind Denver Broncos great Terrell Davis's 2,476 in 1998 and 2,331 in 1997. So Barkley needs 148 rushing yards the rest of the way for the most ever in a season. |

The Philadelphia Eagles topped the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round playoff game, as QB Jalen Hurts completed 15-of-20 passes for 128 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Hurts ran seven times for 70 yards and a score, while RB Saquon Barkley rolled up 205 rushing yards and two scores on 26 carries. TE Dallas Goedert led the way with four receptions for a team-high 56 yards, with Barkley adding four grabs for 27 yards. WR DeVonta Smith had four catches for 21 yards, and WR A.J. Brown was limited to two receptions for 14 yards. RB Kenneth Gainwell ran once for 10 yards, and had a 10-yard catch. DL Jalen Carter had five total stops, three solo tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, a pass defensed and a game-high three quarterback hits, while PK Jake Elliott made 3-of-3 field goals with 10 points, although he missed twice on three point-after attempts.
Footballguys view: Barkley and the run blocking were the key to win, with two long touchdown runs keying the offense. Jalen Hurts also had a long touchdown to open the scoring on a day when he wasn't asked to do very much as a passer, but did absorb seven sacks, including one in the end zone. The Eagles will host Washington next week in the NFC title game. They split the season series 1-1, although Jalen Hurts was knocked out of the game they lost very early with a concussion and Kenny Pickett actually kept them in the game until the very end. |

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts completed 13-of-21 passes for 131 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the NFC wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers, while adding 36 rushing yards. RB Saquon Barkley ran 25 times for 119 yards, while RB Kenneth Gainwell chipped in with 14 yards on three attempts. WR DeVonta Smith had a game-high 55 receiving yards on four receptions, while TE Dallas Goedert had a TD grab, finishing with four catches and 47 yards on a team-best six targets. WR Jahan Dotson made his lone catch count, posting an 11-yasrd reception, and WR A.J. Brown had 10 yards on his lone catch. S Reed Blankenship posted game highs with 11 total stops and seven solo tackles, while LB Nolan Smith had eight total stops, four solo tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits.
Footballguys view: Barkley only truly got free once, but he ended the run prematurely as it was the game clincher. The offense was in manageable situations all day because of Barkley's productivity, but they couldn't finish drives with accurate downfield passing. Dallas Goedert provided the highlight of the day with a catch and run touchdown with multiple stiff arms to fend off a would-be tackler. The Eagles offense will likely have to be better to win next week, but the Packers defense deserves some credit for their performance in this game. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley has topped 100 rushing yards in 11 games this season, the most by any player in their first year with a team in NFL history.
Footballguys view: Barkley is going to rest in Week 18, but he could've set the single-season rushing record in 2024. What he's done is fantastic, and he's clearly a centerpiece for what the Eagles want to do on offense. The MVP is a quarterback award, but Barkley is clearly the MVP of the Eagles. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley won't play in Week 18, as the team intends to rest its starters, per sources on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
Footballguys view: Well, that settles that. Against the Giants (his former team), Barkley could set an NFL single-season record. Barkley is 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's NFL record of 2,105 yards rushing yards set in 1984. Instead, the Eagles are getting set for a deep postseason run. With the Vikings and the Lions competing for the no.1 seed in the NFC, the Eagles are locked into playing in the Wild Card Round. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley could play in the season finale in Week 18 as head coach Nick Sirianni said he'd talk to the front office and the players about whether Barkley will play.

The status of Saquon Barkley's pursuit of the NFL single-season rushing record remains up in the air. Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said during his weekly radio show with 94WIP on Tuesday that he will meet with players and team brass before deciding whether Barkley will play in Sunday's regular-season finale against his old team, the New York Giants, at Lincoln Financial Field.
Footballguys view: The NFC East champion Eagles (13-3) are locked into the No. 2 playoff seed in the NFC, turning the contest against the Giants (3-13) into an ideal opportunity to rest their starters for the postseason. Barkley, 27, needs 101 yards to break Eric Dickerson's hallowed mark of 2,105 yards set during a 16-game season in 1984. Barkley has rushed for at least 101 yards in 11 games this season, including Sunday's 41-7 rout of the Dallas Cowboys when his 167 yards made him the ninth player in NFL history to reach 2,000. "I'll talk to our staff, I'll talk to the players, I'll talk to (general manager) Howie (Roseman), I'll talk to (owner) Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie. I'll talk to everybody to try and make sure that I'm making the best decision for the football team," Sirianni said Tuesday. Sirianni's next media availability is Wednesday, when he is expected to announce the playing status for Barkley, quarterback Jalen Hurts (concussion protocol), and other starters. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley went over 2,000 rushing yards for the season during a 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys in in Week 17, rushing 31 times for 167 yards and adding two catches for two yards.
Footballguys view: Barkley has been nothing short of a revelation running behind a good offensive line. He will be in the running to be a top 3-5 fantasy pick next year and can break Eric Dickerson's single season rushing record with 101 yards next week. |

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley missed big chunks of Sunday's win over the Steelers, and he discussed why Kenneth Gainwell saw more playing time when he spoke to reporters after the game. Barkley said he's "dealing with a little something," but declined to expand on what was bothering him during the game. "I'm not going to go too much into that . . . Kenny was able to make some big plays for us, and I was able to tough it out," Barkley said via E.J. Smith of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Footballguys view: Barkley finished the day with 19 carries for 65 yards and now has 1,688 rushing yards for the season. That leaves him on pace to rush for more than 2,000 yards â€" about 2,050 yards â€" this season, but he is no longer on pace to surpass Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards. The Eagles play the Commanders in Week 16. We'll watch for more on Barkley in coming days. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley rushed 20 times for 124 yards in Week 14 against the Carolina Panthers, though he did not have any receptions on just one target.
Footballguys view: Barkley had a floor game because he was tackled at the one yet again, but the Eagles did give him a chance to score on the next play. It was unsuccessful. Barkley broke the Eagles single season rushing record with four games left in the season, and the NFL single season rushing record held by Eric Dickerson is still in sight, with the stout Steelers run defense up next. |

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley leads the NFL with 6.1 yards per carry, and his 32 carries of 10 or more yards also rank first in the league.
Footballguys view: Barkley has been fantastic for the Eagles, and he's fun to watch on every carry. The Eagles are making moves for a deep postseason run, and Barkley is the largest part of that. |
