Steelers | McCarthy definitely wants Aaron Rodgers to return for 2026 season Tue Jan 27, 03:17 PM
They spent more than a decade together in Green Bay. New Steelers coach Mike McCarthy wants that relationship to resume and to continue. During his introductory press conference, McCarthy was asked whether it's his "personal preference," in light of the "best-case scenario," whether he wants quarterback Aaron Rodgers to return for 2026. "I mean, definitely," McCarthy said. "But, you know, I think just like anything, knowing Aaron long enough, going through seasons . . . when guys are up at that stage of their career, they need to step away and decompress. I think that's very important."
Footballguys view: McCarthy was later asked if there was a timeline for both the team and Rodgers to make a decision. "Timelines, we haven't discussed that yet," McCarthy said. They'll need to discuss it fairly soon. Free agency starts in six weeks. If the Steelers will be looking for another veteran quarterback, they'll need to have a plan. As PFT suggests, the first question is whether Rodgers wants to return to a team that doesn't have Mike Tomlin in charge. Rodgers may choose to explore other options before making a decision, with retirement always a real possibility.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said he is 'excited' about QB Will Howard.
Footballguys view: While McCarthy was quick to acknowledge he'd like Aaron Rodgers to return for the 2026 season, free agency starts in six weeks. If Rodgers isn't returning, they'll need to have a plan. At least part of that will be Howard. "I think he's someone that I thought he really came on at Ohio State," McCarthy told reporters. "I'm anxious to work with him, so it'd be great to have Aaron back, but Will and Mason [Rudolph], I'm really excited to get started with those guys." Stay tuned.
New York Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and the team are parting ways on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com noted, reports in recent days indicated the Jets were working to hire former Colts and Panthers head coach Frank Reich to join the offensive staff, though not necessarily as offensive coordinator, as Engstrand occupied that role. The situation has now changed. Though Reich was set to join the Jets, New York will now have to be Rooney Rule-compliant if they want to hire Reich as the club's offensive coordinator. It stands to reason that will be the case, as Reich was reportedly set to call plays for New York with Engstrand's title remaining the same.
Green Bay Packers QB coach Sean Mannion will interview for the offensive coordinator vacancy of the Philadelphia Eagles this week.
Footballguys view: This will be Mannion's second interview with the club, as he previously met virtually with the Eagles. Mannion, 33, just finished his first year as Green Bay's quarterbacks coach. A Rams third-round pick in 2015, Mannion played for the Rams from 2015 to 2018. He also played for Seattle and Minnesota. In Green Bay, Mannion has worked closely with Packers quarterback Jordan Love. Mannion has also coached backup Malik Willis, who has played well when called upon. The Eagles are searching for their fifth offensive coordinator under head coach Nick Sirianni after moving on from Kevin Patullo after one season.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton says it 'seems fairly optimistic' that QB Bo Nix (ankle) will be ready for training camp. Nix suffered a broken ankle that required surgery in the AFC divisional round against the Buffalo Bills.
Footballguys view: The initial phase of recovery from last week's surgery is the most challenging part of this injury. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Nix is not supposed to put any weight on his ankle for at least four weeks, and he will miss 12 weeks altogether before he can return to activity. Nix is expected to be largely recovered in time to participate in the Broncos' offseason program. Still, doctors are trying to be very intentional with what Denver's quarterback can and can't do over the next 12 weeks. We'll be watching for more.
Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has agreed to join the Tennessee Titans as offensive coordinator if he doesn't land the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching position.
Footballguys view: Daboll had a second interview with the Raiders on Tuesday, however, and any move to join Robert Saleh's staff is contingent on Daboll failing to get the job in Vegas. Daboll interviewed with the Titans for the head coaching job before they hired Saleh, so they've already heard some of what he has in mind when it comes to developing quarterback Cam Ward in his second NFL season. The Raiders' timeline for naming a head coach is unclear, but things could move forward in Tennessee if they let Daboll know that he won't be getting the job.
New England Patriots QB Drake Maye (shoulder) is battling a shoulder ailment but should be fine to play in the Super Bowl.
Footballguys view: Asked about online speculation that Maye suffered an injury in the AFC Championship Game win over the Broncos, head coach Mike Vrabel did not answer that specifically, instead saying, "There's not a player on our team that's 100 percent healthy" at this point in the year. At a press conference later in the day, Vrabel was asked if interest in Maye's shoulder has been overblown. Vrabel said it "probably" has been. The Patriots will release an injury report on Wednesday, but next week's practice and injury updates will be of greater import when setting the stage for Super Bowl LX.
Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders for their head coaching position for the second time Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Footballguys view: Daboll has options. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Titans plan to hire Daboll to run their offense. The Raiders' timeline for naming a head coach is unclear, but things could move forward in Tennessee if they let Daboll know that he won't be getting the job.
The Buffalo Bills are promoting offensive coordinator Joe Brady to become the club's new head coach. Brady has agreed to terms on a five-year deal.
Footballguys view: Brady arrived in Buffalo as the quarterbacks coach in 2022. He became the interim offensive coordinator in 2023, after the in-season firing of Ken Dorsey. Brady previously worked as the Panthers' offensive coordinator from 2020 to 2021. Still only 36 years old, he now gets his shot, with the reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen on his side.
Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells will interview for the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator job this week. Wells worked under head coach Mike McCarthy five years in Dallas.
Footballguys view: Wells coached the tight ends for all five of McCarthy's seasons in Dallas before staying on the staff under Brian Schottenheimer. The Commanders requested an interview with Wells before promoting David Blough to offensive coordinator this month. Wells spent eight seasons on the Giants' staff before moving to Dallas in 2020. He also coached at LSU before making the move into the NFL ranks.
Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts could be a candidate for the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who quotes an AFC executive that says the projected $15.9 million tag number is 'reasonable,' and that retaining Pitts 'seems like a good move at this stage.'
Footballguys view: The 2025 campaign was set up as a make-or-break season for Pitts. Turns out, his fifth season was his best as a pro, with 88 catches for 928 yards and 5 touchdowns. His TE2 finish overall was the kind of outcome fantasy investors have been hoping for since his 1,000-yard rookie season. While the team's QB situation is still to be determined, new head coach Kevin Stefanski leaned heavily on the tight end position. We'll all be interested to see how Pitts might fit into that scheme.

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray likely will be made available in a trade this offseason, and the Cardinals are expected to look for at least a Day 2 pick in any trade, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Whether the Cardinals want to trade Murray is one of the most important offseason questions for Arizona. According to ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss, before Jonathan Gannon was fired a day after the regular season, the belief inside the Cardinals was that a decision would be reached within the first two weeks of the offseason. However, with Arizona on the hunt for a new head coach, that decision could be tabled until the new coach and his staff are in place. It's a situation that bears watching.

Dallas Cowboys WR George Pickens, who is set to become a free agent, is expected to receive the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, but the belief is that Pickens will be seeking a 'long-term deal.' If the Cowboys don't sign him to a long-term contract, some believe Pickens will stay away from the team 'for a large portion of the offseason or even training camp.' Pickens can further apply pressure by refusing to sign the franchise tag.
Footballguys view: Pickens only broke 1,000-plus receiving yards once in his three seasons in Pittsburgh, totaling just 12 touchdowns through the air, so the Cowboys have to decide if he's a one-hit wonder or if playing next to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb helped unlock Pickens' skill set. Although he did disappear at times, Sports Illustrated pointed out that in the three games Lamb missed due to injury, Pickens caught 19 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns, showing his ability to carry an undermanned wide receiver room. If tagged, both sides would have until July 15 to reach a deal.
Los Angeles Rams WR Puka Nacua averaged 107.2 yards per game during the 2025 regular season.
Footballguys view: This just in: Nacua is really good at his job. He led the league with 129 receptions, finished second in receiving yards with 1,715 passing yards and scored 11 total touchdowns. His success was all-encompassing, as he led the league in contested catches (27), according to Pro Football Focus, and finished first among receivers in yards after catch (729), according to Next Gen Stats. In addition to being a finalist for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Nacua finished 2025 as fantasy's WR1 overall. It's not a reach to believe he'll be the first player selected in many fantasy drafts this summer.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter will probably see more playing time at cornerback next season since the team has multiple cornerbacks that will become free agents this offseason, according to general manager James Gladstone. 'At this point walking into the offseason, corner is a position that we have a few guys who are on expiring contracts. By default, you can expect there to be a higher emphasis on his placement [at corner},' Gladstone said.
Footballguys view: Hunter's rookie season ended with 28 catches for 298 yards and a touchdown, 15 tackles, and three pass breakups. He played 67 percent of the team's offensive snaps and 36 percent of the defensive snaps before his season-ending knee injury Oct. 30. Hunter has been rehabbing since undergoing surgery to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee Nov. 11. We'll be watching for more, but short of roster moves to shore up the secondary, expect to see Hunter playing more defense.
Seattle Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba averaged 105.5 yards per game during the 2025 regular season.
Footballguys view: If there was a reminder needed of how valuable Smith-Njigba is to what the Seahawks want to do offensively, it came against the Rams in the Conference Championship. He had 10 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown in the victory. That kind of role doesn't happen by accident. It's also likely to persist. His monstrous workload is why Smith-Njigba finished the 2025 regular season as the WR2 overall, behind only Puka Nacua. Expect to pay a premium for JSN this summer.

Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase wrapped up his second interview with the Browns for their head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: Scheelhaase had his first interview with the team on January 16 and the second meeting had to wait until after the Rams participated in the NFC Championship Game. Sunday's 31-27 loss to the Seahawks freed Scheelhaase up for an in-person interview, which the Browns announced on Monday evening, and the Browns could also hire him now that the Rams' season is over. If that happens, Scheelhaase would be passing on the opportunity to interview for the Bills' head coaching job. Word of their request to interview Scheelhaase came while he was meeting with the Browns on Monday. The Browns have already seen several candidates pull their names from consideration for the job and they'll have to continue the search process if they don't come to an agreement with Scheelhaase.
Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Sean Duggan will be joining new Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein, who writes that Duggan could become the new defensive coordinator.

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent RB Travis Etienne is unlikely to be a candidate for the franchise tag this offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Michael DiRocco.
Footballguys view: Etienne is coming off his third 1,000-yard rushing season and posted 13 total touchdowns. He turned out to be a good fit in coach Liam Coen's offense, improved as a pass blocker, and was the team's most consistent offensive player. Still, the estimated franchise tag for a running back in 2026 (per OverTheCap.com) would be $14.153 million, which would make Etienne the fourth-highest-paid running back in terms of annual salary. The presence of 2025 draft picks Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen Jr. will be part of the equation for Jacksonville. We'll be watching for more.

Seattle Seahawks OT Charles Cross (foot) will likely have to deal with soreness in his foot but should be ready to play in Super Bowl LX, according to head coach Mike Macdonald.
Link to storySeattle Seahawks QB Sam Darnold (oblique) is dealing with soreness in his oblique, but it is not believed to be a serious issue, according to head coach Mike Macdonald.
Footballguys view: The 28-year-old Darnold earned his second straight Pro Bowl honor this campaign after recording 25 passing touchdowns and 14 interceptions in the regular season. He's gone 37-for-53 with 470 passing yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions across Seattle's two playoff games -- while playing through the oblique issue. He's all but certain to do the same against the Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8.

Denver Broncos impending free-agent RB J.K. Dobbins said he hopes to re-sign with the Broncos this offseason. He said he would have been ready to play if the Broncos advanced to Super Bowl LX.
Footballguys view: The 27-year-old is coming off a 772-yard rushing performance across 10 games, with four touchdowns. While Dobbins didn't reach 1,000 yards or finish the year, his 77.2 yards per game was the best of his career by a wide margin. As The Sporting News noted, Dobbins has dealt with injuries his entire career, but as seen this past season, when behind a great offensive line, he can be a star running back. Re-signing Dobbins won't cost much and would be a high-quality move for the Broncos and George Paton this offseason.

Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Robert Prince has been hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their wide receivers coach. The Falcons have also hired Cleveland Browns senior consultant Bob Quinn as a senior advisor to the head coach.
Footballguys view: Prince has been a WRs coach in some capacity for the Jaguars, Seahawks, Lions, Texans, Cowboys, and -- most recently -- the Dolphins. While with the Cowboys, Prince coached wideout CeeDee Lamb to three consecutive Pro Bowl selections. He also coached Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, and Kenny Golladay during his time in Detroit. Prince interviewed for the Giants' OC job last week, but Monday's news suggests he's not in the running for that position. Quinn, meanwhile, was a senior personnel and coaching executive with the Browns for the last five seasons.
Miami Dolphins special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman has been hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their new special teams coordinator.
Footballguys view: Aukerman, who served as the special teams coordinator for the Miami Dolphins last season, will take over for Marquice Williams in Atlanta. The Falcons' special teams units had their share of issues last season, but they figured things out late in the year. Nonetheless, head coach Kevin Stefanski has decided to make a move. The team has now hired all three coordinator spots.
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers Monday, Jan. 26, as offensive coordinator.
Footballguys view: This deal was reported last week, but with Daniel still pursuing head coaching jobs, it wasn't made official until today. It comes after the Chargers' offense under former coordinator Greg Roman had scored one touchdown in two combined playoff losses and finished 20th in points in 2025. L.A. was looking to freshen things up a bit. According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, head coach Jim Harbaugh wanted to marry elements of the Shanahan offense to the rugged, physical identity his teams have always had. No one better than McDaniel to help him pull that off.
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers withdrew from the Buffalo Bills' head coaching search.
Footballguys view: After five years away, Rivers made his return to the NFL this season with the Colts. He started three games down the stretch. Considering his age and long layoff, Rivers performed admirably, tossing four touchdowns and three interceptions in three games, all losses. It also put him in the head coaching discussion. Reports suggest that Rivers, 44, may have pulled out of the role for family reasons. He may consider a future in coaching in the NFL down the road, but now is not the right time, per the NFL Network.

Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson will interview with the Philadelphia Eagles for their offensive coordinator post.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com noted, Johnson also spoke to the team in 2024, but they wound up hiring Kellen Moore at that time. Moore spent a year in the job and parlayed a Super Bowl win into the Saints' head coaching job. Kevin Patullo called the offensive plays in 2025, but was relieved of those duties after the team's playoff loss to the 49ers. Johnson has been the quarterbacks coach in Houston since 2023. He has never held a coordinator position.
Jerrod Johnson player page
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle removed his name from the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator opening.
Footballguys view: Doyle returns to Chicago for his second season as the team's offensive coordinator. He was brought in upon Ben Johnson's hiring in 2025, having previously served as the tight ends coach for the Broncos. Though Johnson called the plays for the Bears, Doyle's presence helped elevate the offense and keep the players sharp on their assignments. As SBNation suggests, in his second year as offensive coordinator, Doyle will be tasked with maintaining that level of continuity on the Bears' offense, while also managing the development of such young players as Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, and Colston Loveland.
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski withdrew his name from consideration from the Cleveland Browns head coaching search.
Footballguys view: Udinski is still pursuing the Buffalo Bills' job, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday. Udinski, who interviewed with the Bills on Sunday, has also agreed to a new contract with the Jaguars that includes a raise for the 2026 season if he is not hired as the Bills' head coach. Meanwhile, the remaining Cleveland candidates are Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn, and former Ravens OC Todd Monken. We'll continue to monitor.
Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles for the same spot in their organization.
Footballguys view: The Eagles, who continue their search for Kevin Patullo's replacement, had an interest in Mike McDaniel, and with the former Dolphins coach expected to join the Chargers, they'll settle for the next best thing. Smith joined the Miami Dolphins as offensive coordinator in 2022. In 2024, Smith helped the offense drastically improve, and Miami was one of only four teams with three players with 700-plus receiving yards and the only team with three players with 75-plus receptions. Smith was voted as the NFL's top offensive coordinator in a 2023 NFLPA player survey.
Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce will be a free agent this offseason, and ESPN's Aaron Schatz believes the Denver Broncos will be the ones to sign him, citing Pierce's size, physicality, and ability to make plays down the field making him an ideal fit for QB Bo Nix and head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: Pierce, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, narrowly topped 1,000 yards for the first time as a pro with a 132-yard effort against the Texans in Week 18. He's averaged 22.3 yards per reception in 2024 and 21.3 yards per catch in 2025, leading the league both times. Pierce is a walking explosive-play threat, which makes him a very valuable player. His destination when free agency opens in March will be of great interest to fantasy managers.
Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford plans to return for his 18th NFL season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who reports that Stafford has told people close to him that he believes he has 'good football left.'
Footballguys view: Immediately after the Rams' 31-27 loss to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game, Stafford wouldn't discuss next season. "I can't generalize six months of my life 10 minutes after a loss," he said. But a return makes sense. Stafford, a finalist for this year's NFL MVP award, is coming off the best season of his career, finishing the regular season as the odds-on favorite to be named MVP after leading the league in passing yards (4,707) and passing touchdowns (46). We'll watch for more on this, but it could take some time for an official answer.

Los Angeles Rams S Kamren Curl is set to be a free agent this offseason, and the chances of the team re-signing him are 'slim,' per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who notes that the team recently signed fellow S Quentin Lake to a large extension and are unlikely to have multiple sizable contracts at that position.

Seattle Seahawks QB Sam Darnold completed 25 of his 36 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns and gained nine rushing yards on three carries in a 31-27 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game. RB Kenneth Walker III rushed 19 times for 62 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 49 yards, and RB George Holani served as the backup, rushing three times for four yards and gaining 27 yards on three receptions. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was Darnold's top target, catching 10 of his 12 targets for 153 yards and a touchdown. WR Cooper Kupp chipped in four receptions for 36 yards and a score, and WR Rashid Shaheed's lone catch went for 51 yards. TE AJ Barner finished with two catches for 13 yards, and WR Jake Bobo hauled in a 17-yard touchdown. LB Ernest Jones led the way for the defense, finishing with a team-high 8 tackles, including six solo stops. DL DeMarcus Lawrence recorded Seattle's only sack, and CB Riq Woolen broke up a pair of passes.
Footballguys view: Though the Seahawks' vaunted defense was solid, it was the play of Darnold and Smith-Njigba that carried the day. It was fitting that Darnold starred in this one after leading Seattle to a 14-3 record and the NFC's No. 1 seed during the regular season. Still, there were questions about his big-game ability. But now, Darnold has Seattle in the biggest game of all in a season that did not begin with Super Bowl expectations. The Seahawks will face the New England Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 22 of his 35 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns and gained 16 rushing yards on two carries in a 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. RB Blake Corum gained a team-high 55 rushing yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 24 yards, and RB Kyren Williams rushed 10 times for 39 yards and had two receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown. WR Puka Nacua was open early and often, catching nine passes for 165 yards and a touchdown, and WR Davante Adams hauled in four passes for 89 yards and a score. TE Colby Parkinson finished with 62 receiving yards on three receptions, and TE Tyler Higbee caught his only target for 12 yards. LB Omar Speights recorded a team-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops, and S Kamren Kinchens, DE Jared Verse and DL Braden Fiske all recorded a sack.
Footballguys view: The Rams outgained the Seahawks 479 to 396, but Seattle was 4-of-5 in the red zone and had the only takeaway. The Rams were only 1-for-8 on third down. Stafford, who is a finalist for NFL MVP, threw a 9-yard touchdown to Williams, a 2-yarder to Davante Adams, and a 34-yarder to Nacua, who was named a finalist for the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award. Beyond that, even if head coach Sean McVay loses an assistant or two in the current hiring cycle, the Rams are well-positioned for continued success in 2026.
