Bills | Sean McDermott fired after nine years as head coach Mon Jan 19, 09:44 AM
The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott following nine years helming the team. McDermott's firing comes after the Buffalo Bills fell in the Divisional Round against the Denver Broncos in overtime on Saturday.
Footballguys view: McDermott won 106 games over nine years in Buffalo, including playoffs. But another disappointing playoff exit has change coming to Buffalo. The Bills are retaining GM Brandon Beane, who will help lead the team's first coaching search since 2017. The Bills' firing of McDermott makes it 10 total head-coaching openings, with the Giants' hiring of John Harbaugh and the Falcons' hiring of Kevin Stefanski filling two so far. As NFL Network's Mike Garafolo suggested, this is as wild a firing and hiring cycle as we've seen in quite some time, if ever.
Chicago Bears TE Colston Loveland (concussion) was evaluated for a concussion during the team's Divisional Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He did not return.
Link to storyHouston Texans RB Joe Mixon (foot) might not play in the NFL again, according to ESPN's Aaron Schatz, who writes that Mixon's 'career might be over' after the veteran missed all of the 2025 season dealing with a foot injury.
Footballguys view: Assuming that's the case, fantasy investors can expect the Texans to add more firepower in the backfield this offseason. Houston wasn't anticipating that Mixon would miss the season, so it made sense not to overly invest in the position in the 2025 offseason. The Texans drafted only Woody Marks in the fourth and signed Nick Chubb. Marks was second on the team in scrimmage yards (911), but ESPN.com's DJ Bien-Aime believes adding there could elevate the offseason in 2026.

Chicago Bears S Jaquan Brisker is expected to have an 'outside market' that 'prices him out of Chicago,' in the opinion of Dan Graziano.
Link to storyChicago Bears WR DJ Moore is likely to be traded during the offseason, in the opinion of ESPN's Ben Solak, who notes that Moore has little bonus money left, allowing the team to move on from him even though he still has four years remaining on his deal. Solak adds that the team is set at the position with WRs Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, and that Moore will have a market.

Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams ranked third in the NFL with 23 receptions of 20-plus yards in 2025, and his 17.2 yards per reception ranked third among players who appeared in at least 10 games.
Link to storyLos Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford completed 20 of his 42 passes for 258 yards in a 20-17 overtime win over the Chicago Bears in the Divisional Round. RB Kyren Williams rushed for a team-high 87 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and added four grabs four 30 yards. RB Blake Corum was held in check, finishing with six carries for 19 yards. WR Puka Nacua and TE Colby Parkinson tied for the team lead with 56 receiving yards. Parkinson caught three passes, and Nacua had five receptions to go along with two carries for six yards. Davante Adams was limited to two catches for 24 yards, and TE Tyler Higbee had just one catch for 27 yards. WR Jordan Whittington finished with two receptions for 35 yards. S Kamren Curl turned in a standout performance, logging a team-high 13 tackles, including seven solo stops, and an interception. LB Nathan Landman finished with 10 tackles, including five solo stops, and CB Cobie Durant had two tackles, three passes defensed and a pair of interceptions.
Footballguys view: The Rams' offense -- a unit that led the league in offensive DVOA during the regular season -- struggled for much of their 20-17 divisional-round win against the Chicago Bears. Through three quarters, the Rams had 174 yards, their fewest of the season, according to ESPN Research. But the Rams' defense stepped up when they needed to most, with safety Kam Curl intercepting a Caleb Williams pass in overtime to give Los Angeles the ball back at their 22-yard line. While not a pretty game for the Rams, it was enough to send them to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since they won Super Bowl LVI during the 2021 season. Now get ready for Rams vs. Seahawks Part III.

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams completed 23 of his 42 passes for 257 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in a 20-17 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round. He added 40 rushing yards on five carries. RB D'Andre Swift rushed 19 times for 76 yards, and RB Kyle Monangai chipped in 36 rushing yards on 13 carries and caught four passes for 36 yards. TE Colston Loveland caught four passes for a team-high 56 yards, and WR DJ Moore had 52 receiving yards and a touchdown on a team-high five catches. WR Rome Odunze gained 44 receiving yards on two receptions, WR Luther Burden III added three catches for 24 yards, and TE Cole Kmet finished with three grabs for 31 yards and a game-tying touchdown that forced overtime. S Jaquan Brisker led the way on defense with a team-high 14 tackles, including eight solo stops, a sack and two passes defensed. CB Kyler Gordon, DE Montez Sweat and DE Dominique Robinson all recorded a sack in the loss.
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's Courtney Cronin wrote, "They were the Cardiac Bears until the very end." After facing a seven-point deficit late in the game, Williams squeezed one more drop of fourth-quarter magic when he found Kmet in the corner of the north end zone at Soldier Field for a 14-yard touchdown to force the extra period. The Bears failed to score after their sole possession of overtime ended with Williams throwing an interception, his third of the game. Nonetheless, Ben Johnson's first year with the Bears was a resounding success despite Chicago falling short of reaching the title game as the NFC's No. 2 seed. The Bears finished with 11 wins in the regular season and their first playoff win in 15 years when they beat the Packers in the wild-card round.

The Pittsburgh Steelers remain open to an Aaron Rodgers reunion in 2026, even though it's unlikely because of Mike Tomlin's resignation, sources told ESPN.
Footballguys view: Rodgers, 42, did not commit to retiring or returning to the Steelers during his conversations with the organization, and wants to take time away before deciding his future. Whoever the defending AFC North champion Steelers pick for their next head coach likely would factor into Rodgers' decision. Steelers team president Art Rooney II made it clear last week that Tomlin's resignation reduced the chances of Rodgers returning to Pittsburgh in 2026. The 10-time Pro Bowler signed with the Steelers last year in large part to play for Tomlin. We'll be watching for more.

Link to storyDenver Broncos QB Jarrett Stidham will be 'ready to go' for the AFC Championship Game, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'But one of Stiddy's strengths is his mental aptitude and his progressions and understanding plays,' Payton said. 'He's very accurate. He's a got a lot to his ball.'
Footballguys view: Stidham is a seventh-year veteran backup but made just one appearance in the 2025 season, logging four snaps in Denver's Week 8 win over Dallas. He hasn't seen extended action since 2023, when he started the final two games of the season in place of the shelved Russell Wilson. As NFL.com notes, the Broncos boast a top-tier defense, but injured starter Bo Nix is the engine that makes their offense go. Nonetheless, Payton said he knows his team will respond with a Super Bowl berth on the line next week. "Stiddy's ready, and we'll be ready for the next challenge."

New England Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez was targeted in coverage 16 times in the AFC Divisional Round game against the Houston Texans, the most targets any defender has faced in a regular or postseason game this season. He allowed seven receptions for 58 yards, an average of just 3.6 yards per target.

Houston Texans DL Will Anderson Jr. joined an elite club in the AFC Divisional Round playoff loss to the New England Patriots, becoming the fourth player in NFL history to record at least 3.0 sacks and two forced fumbles in a postseason game.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik is a target of the Philadelphia Eagles for their offensive coordinator position. The Eagles have requested an interview.
Footballguys view: Slowik, the former offensive coordinator of the Texans for two seasons, joined the Dolphins as the senior pass game coordinator in 2025. In his first year as Houston's offensive coordinator in 2023, the Texans ranked seventh in the NFL in yards per game (245.5) and second in pass plays over 25 yards (41). Slowik played a key role in C.J. Stroud's development during his rookie season and helped him have a historic one. Year 2 didn't go as well, and Slowik was fired. But a year working under Mike McDaniels in Miami has him back on the radar.

Link to storyNew England Patriots QB Drake Maye completed 16-of-27 passes for 179 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Houston Texans, advancing to face the Denver Broncos on the road in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 25. RB Rhamondre Stevenson (eye) returned to finish with 16 carries and 70 yards, while adding four receptions for 11 yards on four targets. Rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson had 12 runs for 25 yards, while adding a catch for minus-2 yards on two targets. WR Kayshon Boutte hauled in three receptions for a game-high 75 yards and a TD on five targets, with WR Stefon Diggs posted four receptions, 40 yards and a TD on a team-best six targets. WR DeMario Douglas also had two catches for 36 yards and a score, with TE Austin Hooper posting a 14-yard grab on two targets, TE Hunter Henry posting a 5-yard catch on two targets and CB Christian Gonzalez leading the team with nine total stops and six solo tackles with a pass defensed. CB Marcus Jones had two stops with two passes defensed and a 26-yard interception for touchdown.
Footballguys view: Like the other teams remaining in these playoffs, the Patriots have their own flaws but have overcome them in resounding fashion through two playoff games by turning up the intensity defensively and riding the wave of excitement at home. They're now one game from returning to the Super Bowl -- Sunday's AFC Championship Game at the Bo Nix-less Denver Broncos -- a reality that would have been inconceivable just one year ago.

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud completed 20-of-47 passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game loss to the New England Patriots. RB Woody Marks rushed 14 times for just 17 yards, while posting two receptions for 19 yards, and RB Nick Chubb ran four times for 14 yards, while going without a catch on a single target. WR Jayden Higgins led the team with six receptions, 59 yards and 10 targets, while TE Dalton Schultz (calf) had two grabs for 47 yards before leaving with a calf injury. WR Xavier Hutchinson had four catches for 44 yards on 3 targets, TE Harrison Bryant had 21 yards on three catches with six targets and TE Cade Stover (knee) had a 2-yard reception on three targets before leaving with a knee ailment. WR Christian Kirk had two catches, 20 yards and a TD on six targets.
Footballguys view: The Texans, who rolled into Foxboro on a 10-game win streak and with a defense playing as well as any defense east of Seattle, had a golden opportunity. But, as ESPN.com's Dan Graziano suggested, C.J. Stroud was catastrophically bad in the first half, throwing four interceptions and putting his team into a hole from which even its stifling defense could not extract itself. This performance came six days after Stroud fumbled five times and turned the ball over three times in a wild-card-round victory over the Steelers that was closer in the fourth quarter than it should have been. So, the Texans have work to do this offseason.
