Link to storyBengals | A Bulkier (By Design) Joe Burrow Making All The Throws Tue May 7, 04:21 PM
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been back in action the past two days following his season-ending wrist surgery six months ago, and the franchise quarterback said all has gone well so far. "I feel great," Burrow said, repeating the phrase several times Tuesday in his first media session since participating in the team's offseason workouts. "It's good to be back."
Footballguys view: Taking the field on Monday, Burrow made all the throws. The reports from Bengals receivers were good, too, indicating that the zip has returned to Burrow's passes. And, so far at least, Burrow said he hasn't had any setbacks or complications, even while experiencing some pain -- although the QB declined to expound on that. One interesting measure Burrow has taken this offseason has been adding bulk. He's suffered several injuries over the years, including a few season-ending ailments, so it can't hurt for Burrow -- who, according to NFL.com, looked bigger to the naked eye -- to add muscle mass as a form of self-preservation. "I'm really strong. Bigger than I was," Burrow confirmed. "We're going to continue to eat right, lift and go through my routine and see where I'm at . . ." The fact he's on schedule in his ability to throw the ball is a great starting point for his return. |

Colts | Josh Downs Should Make A Leap In His Second Season Tue May 7, 04:19 PM
The offseason discussions surrounding the Indianapolis Colts offense have centered around Anthony Richardson's recovery, Michael Pittman's new contract, and drafting wideout Adonai Mitchell in the second round. Josh Downs seems to have been somewhat lost in the equation. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, when discussing Downs, noted that slots tend to make a more significant leap in their second season. "Slot receiver ends up being a position where the more you understand what the other guys on offense are doing and what the guys on defense are doing, the better you can play," Cooter said last week.
Footballguys view: The second-year receiver is coming off a campaign in which he set the club's rookie record with 68 catches, generating 771 yards and two touchdowns. NFL.com noted that Downs was able to create open space on routes. His 3.3 yards of separation per target was equal to Tyreek Hill's last season, per Next Gen Stats. Downs, with a Round 11 Average Draft Position (ADP), is available two rounds after Mitchell in current best ball drafts. But we should be mindful: Mitchell supplants Alec Pierce's reps on the outside, not Downs' opportunities inside. Taking 79.1 percent of snaps from the slot in 2023, Downs' ability to get off the line of scrimmage and create immediate availability for the quarterback will pay dividends, particularly as Richardson grows in the scheme. |
Chiefs | Reid: Xavier Worthy Is A Sharp Kid Tue May 7, 04:17 PM
There's a long time before the season begins, but the Chiefs got a good first impression of first-round pick Xavier Worthy during rookie minicamp. In his Monday press conference, head coach Andy Reid called Worthy a "sharp kid."
Footballguys view: Reid continued: "I thought he did a nice job picking things up and working through -- we asked him to do a whole lot of stuff there. He was put in most of the primary spots, so it was good for him to be able to get in there and move around a little bit." The key for Worthy and the rest of the rookies, Reid said, will be to successfully retain all they learned in rookie minicamp once they're with the veteran players. Meanwhile, fantasy managers in early best ball drafts on Underdog have already pushed Worthy's average draft position (ADP) into Round 5 -- ahead of Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice. Watch for that pricing to normalize as the excitement over the draft wanes. Until it does, buying the cheaper options isn't a bad idea. |
Buccaneers | Coaches Believe Rookie RB Bucky Irving Can Contribute Tue May 7, 04:16 PM
While speaking to reporters at a press conference on Monday, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen said he thinks the way the team's offense can go from good to great in 2024 is to get better in the run game, and a newcomer looks like he'll be part of that effort. The Bucs drafted Bucky Irving out of Oregon in the fourth round earlier this month and Coen said on Monday that the rookie is "pretty dynamic where he gives us the ability in the run and pass game."
Footballguys view: Running backs coach Skip Peete said Irving has the ability to "create big plays" that could serve him well when it comes to vying with Rachaad White and others for a place in the backfield. Remember, White finished last year as RB4, a number based heavily on volume. White's 336 touches last year were second in the NFL, behind San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey's 339. Still, no team in the league ran for fewer yards than the Buccaneers in 2023, so anything Irving or anyone else can do to lift the team to a better place will be a step in the right direction in Tampa -- even if it's not ideal for White. We'll continue to monitor. |

Link to storyTexans | McNair Reiterates Tank Dell Will Make A Full Recovery Tue May 7, 04:14 PM
Texans owner Cal McNair said Monday that receiver Tank Dell will make a "full recovery" after he was wounded in a shootout at a Florida restaurant last month. McNair did not provide details on the nature of Dell's injury, but the team called it a "minor wound" the day after the April 27th shooting, which also injured nine others.
Footballguys view: Head coach DeMeco Ryans was cagey when asked about Dell, refusing to directly answer the question when asked if he expected him to be ready for Week 1. "Tank should be fine," he said. When pressed later about whether Dell would miss practice time, Ryans again deflected. "I've answered all that about Tank -- he'll be all right," Ryans said. A positive outcome seems likely, but fantasy managers should continue watching this. Dell had 709 yards receiving and set a franchise rookie record with seven touchdown receptions last season before breaking his left fibula in December. Ryans said in April that Dell had recovered from that injury and would be ready to practice when the team began workouts before he was injured in the shooting. |

Link to storyCardinals | Zay Jones meeting with Arizona Tue May 7, 03:09 PM
Free-agent WR Zay Jones (Jaguars) is visiting with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, May 7.
Footballguys view: Arizona could be a decent landing spot for a veteran reveiver with Jones abilities. The Cardinals depth chart after rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson is thin. Greg Dortch is currently penciled in as the team's WR3 with Zach Pascal and Chris Moore leading a field of lesser lights beyond that. Jones previously visited the Titans, who signed former Bengal Tyler Boyd on Tuesday. |

Titans | Tyler Boyd settles on Tennessee Tue May 7, 02:18 PM
Free-agent WR Tyler Boyd (Bengals) reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday, May 7.
Footballguys view: In Tennessee, Boyd will join a depth chart led by free-agent addition Calvin Ridley, who signed a four-year, $92 million deal in March, and five-time Pro Bowl selection DeAndre Hopkins. It also includes 2022 first-round pick Treylon Burks, whose future with the Titans has been a topic of speculation this offseason. Expect that speculation to ramp up with Boyd's arrival. Burks has yet to make a significant impact since being taken No. 18 overall two years ago, with 49 receptions for 665 yards and a touchdown in 22 games. Meanwhile, Callahan has mentioned the slot position as an area the Titans are lacking. Having previously played mainly in the slot under Callahan, Boyd should fill that need in Tennessee. Expecting QB Will Levis and the Titans' offense to fuel the fantasy fortunes of Boyd (or any options at wideout beyond Ridley and Hopkins) at a draft-worthy level is a reach. But if Levis makes a leap under Callahan, it's a situation worth watching. |

Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders was the top quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft class if he entered, according to one longtime NFL scout. 'You have to manage him a little differently, and Deion (Sanders) is going to be heavily involved... so you have to be prepared to deal with that... but I love watching that kid play. He's a born winner.'

Baltimore Ravens RB Rasheen Ali (biceps) was able to participate in some individual drills during the rookie minicamp and be able to do some things during offseason workouts.
Footballguys view: Baltimore needed to add depth after not re-signing Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins in free agency. The only healthy backup to Derrick Henry was Justice Hill. There's no timetable for the return of explosive second-year back Keaton Mitchell, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 15. Ali is an explosive runner who could factor into the mix down the road, but his fantasy value will be limited by a healthy Henry. |

Vikings | T.J. Hockenson ahead of schedule Mon May 6, 07:07 PM
Minnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to The Athletic's Alec Lewis.
Footballguys view: While he's ahead of schedule, there's no benefit to Hockenson rushing back and not being the player the team expects him to be or pays him to be. As USA Today reminded readers, the Vikings aren't in a "win now" scenario. Fantasy managers should expect a cautious approach. Instead, 2024 could have some shining moments, but 2025 will be full steam ahead. |

The Bengals shared a video on X that showed quarterback Joe Burrow wearing a jersey and shorts while carrying his cleats as he made his way onto the team's practice field. Another video showed Burrow throwing a football with the cleats on.
Footballguys view: As PFT notes, the Bengals are in the second phase of their offseason program, which allows for individual and group drills but not full team work. The return falls into line with expectations set almost two months ago and it's not far off from what an offseason has looked like for him the past couple of years. Burrow, who missed the final couple of months of the 2023 season with a right wrist injury, said in February he usually doesn't start throwing until OTAs. The time off has given him an extra 12 weeks to recover and work on any "inefficiencies and weaknesses" as the Bengals look to bounce back from missing the playoffs in 2023. Geoff Hobson of the team's official website reported after the session ened that Burrow went through every drill during a one-hour workout on Monday. That included the quarterback throwing some long passes. Even if he was limited, having Burrow on the field is a big step in the right direction for the offense in Cincinnati. |

Raiders | Jalen Guyton signing with Las Vegas Mon May 6, 12:12 PM
Free-agent WR Jalen Guyton (Chargers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team announced Monday, May 6.
Footballguys view: Guyton was undrafted in 2019 and wound up with the Chargers after spending a brief period with the Cowboys. Guyton's time in Los Angeles came with now Raiders general manager Tom Telesco in that same role for the Chargers. Guyton caught 71 passes for 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns. He was a regular contributor in 2020 and 2021 but tore his ACL early in 2022 and returned to play in eight games last season. He'll join fellow newcomer Michael Gallup to provide depth behind starters Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker, and rookie tight end Brock Bowers, who will likely line up in various spots this season. |

Panthers | Rashaad Penny heading to Carolina Mon May 6, 12:05 PM
Free-agent RB Rashaad Penny (Eagles) plans to sign with the Carolina Panthers following rookie minicamp, according to sources Monday, May 6. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018, Penny has flashed his big-play ability but has never produced consistently over time. His best season as a pro came in 2021 when he had 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns. Penny signed with the Eagles last offseason. He finished 2023 with 11 carries for 33 yards. In Carolina, Penny will reunite with Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who was on the Seahawks' offensive staff for all five of Penny's seasons in Seattle. The team selected Jonathan Brooks, widely viewed as the top back in this year's draft, in the second round. Brooks is coming off a torn ACL suffered last November. The newcomers will join a group of holdovers led by Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders. |

Footballguys view: The Jaguars released Jones after they selected Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of last month's NFL Draft, with former Buffalo wideout Gabe Davis added in free agency. Jones' former Jacksonville teammate, Calvin Ridley, signed with the Titans in March. Jones would be a depth piece at best if he landed in Tennessee. Seven years into his pro career, Jones has compiled 287 receptions for 3,028 yards and 18 touchdowns. |

Link to storyChiefs | Xavier Worthy studying DeSean Jackson Sun May 5, 09:49 PM
Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy said he has been studying retired WR DeSean Jackson to learn how to utilize his smaller frame and speed. 'Just his punt return and his ability to make a play after the catch,' Worthy said. 'How he understood the leverage for deep routes.'
Footballguys view: Worthy, who weighed in at the NFL Scouting Combine at 165 pounds and claims he came to rookie minicamp at 169, told local reporters he's unconcerned by playing with a lighter frame and has tried to take lessons from watching the similarly-sized Jackson. Jackson retired in 2023, having led the NFL on four separate occasions in yards per reception. Worthy, the combine record-holder with a 4.21 40-yard dash, will bring speed to an offense that could use it. As NFL.com notes, Patrick Mahomes' average depth of target was a career-low 7.2 in 2023. Free-agent addition Marquise Brown helps the Chiefs double down on speed in a suddenly rebuilt passing game, while reliable tight end Travis Kelce seems destined to keep dominating underneath. |
