Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was fired Tuesday, Jan. 6.
| Footballguys view: The 55-year-old Eberflus held the role for just one year. But over those 17 games, the Cowboys defense gave up 511 points, the first time in 65 years of existence that the franchise had allowed 30 points per game over the course of a season. Under Eberflus, Dallas also gave up 377 yards per contest (3rd-worst in the league), permitted opponents to convert third downs at the highest clip in the NFL, and was ranked 29th out of 32 teams in red zone defense. The Cowboys will now have their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years. |
Cardinals | Kyler Murray done in Arizona? Tue Jan 6, 01:35 AM
Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is not expected to return to the Cardinals next season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who said that he believes the team is 'planning to move on' from Murray, regardless of who is hired as the next head coach.
| Footballguys view: This comes a day after GM Monti Ossenfort told reporters that Murray remains under contract and said that all options are on the table for what the team will do at the position in the future. But Schefter's belief adds to an already large body of speculation suggesting that Murray has played his last snap in Arizona. There are a lot of moving pieces here. Moving on from Murray would require the Cardinals to have a fallback plan that works for whoever the next coach will be. While there's contractual urgency to get this done, it's unlikely to be immediate. |

Steelers | DK Metcalf reinstated Tue Jan 6, 01:08 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf was removed from the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner list on Monday, Jan. 5. Metcalf served a two-game suspension for an altercation with a fan.
| Footballguys view: Acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks last March, Metcalf had a solid debut season with Pittsburgh, catching 59 passes for 850 yards and recording seven total touchdowns in 15 games. Luckily, the Steelers were able to pull off a Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens, earning a spot in the playoffs and opening the door for Metcalf's return next Monday, as the Texans travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers. |

Jayden Daniels played all 17 games as a rookie in 2024, winning 12 regular-season games and leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game. He played only seven games in 2025, finishing only four of those, and the Commanders won only five games. He will spend the offseason working out and determining what can keep him healthy in 2026. "That's the focus for me in this offseason -- just rebuilding myself from the ground up," Daniels said Monday, via Miles Jordan of USA Today. "That's the most important thing -- to be available for my team."
| Footballguys view: Daniels had knee, hamstring, and elbow injuries this past season. Daniels said he feels like he let down the Commanders in 2025. Marcus Mariota started eight games and Josh Johnson two in subbing for Daniels this season. "I think I can always grow and mature," Daniels said. "The best ability for myself is availability. | Footballguys view: The obvious potential complication here is the torn Achilles' Jones sustained on Dec. 7, which ended his season. But Jones on Monday -- less than a month out from the injury and ensuing surgery -- expressed optimism in his recovery timeline. Jones finished his season having completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,101 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions as Jones and Steichen forged the sort of quarterback-playcaller mind-meld that teams across the NFL constantly seek but don't always find. We'll be watching this situation closely in coming weeks. |

Flacco went 1-5 for the Bengals, but he had 1,664 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. The Bengals being able to bring him back on a one-year deal to back up Joe Burrow would be the best-case scenario. Availability hasn't been Burrow's strength. Having Flacco ready to start a few weeks would be ideal for the Bengals. |

During Monday's press conference, Ossenfort noted that Murray remains under contract and said that all options are on the table for what the team will do at the position in the future.
| Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com suggested, the identity of the next head coach will obviously have a bearing on what direction the Cardinals choose to go. Murray's contract guarantees him over $39 million in 2026, and keeping him on the roster through the fifth day of the new league year will add another $19.5 million in guarantees for 2027. Moving on from Murray would also require the Cardinals to find another starter (or stick with Jacoby Brissett, who replaced Murray), so choosing the next coach is only the start of a busy offseason for Ossenfort and the Cardinals. |

| Footballguys view: Pearsall's situation has remained tenuous since he returned from a right knee injury in Week 11. He reinjured his ankle and knee in Week 15 against Tennessee, missed the following week against Indianapolis, and then returned last week against Chicago. Saturday was Pearsall's eighth missed game. For the season, he had 36 receptions for 528 yards. He had four catches for 108 yards in the Week 1 meeting with Seattle. Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson move up in the rotation behind Jauan Jennings in Pearsall's absence. That will continue as needed. |

| Footballguys view: Bethune may need surgery, but Shanahan said that no decision has been made on that front. Bethune started in eight of his 14 appearances this season. He had 94 tackles, four tackles for loss, and a sack in those contests. The 49ers have left the door open for Fred Warner to return later in the postseason, but he likely won't be ready to face the Eagles this week. Nabers has not decided where he'll rehab -- New York, in Dallas, where he underwent surgery, at home in Louisiana, or somewhere else. He said the foot injury that he dealt with last offseason has healed. Nabers has 127 catches for 1,475 yards and nine touchdowns in 19 career games. With a coaching change coming, Nabers' progress is something we'll be watching closely over the coming weeks. |

Though he played just 14 games this season, Adams still finished with a league-leading 14 touchdowns, having caught 60 passes for 789 yards. |

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa indicated that he is open to playing for a different team next season.
| Footballguys view: When Tagovailoa was benched following a Dec. 15 loss to the Steelers, it seemed likely his time in Miami was coming to an end. Asked on Monday if he was hoping for a fresh start, Tagovailoa said, "That would be dope. I would be good with it." Tagovailoa is owed $54 million guaranteed in 2026. He could be released with a post-June 1 designation at the start of the new league year to split his $99.2 million cap charge over two years. Mike McDaniels' return as HC would all but guarantee Tua's departure. We'll watch for more on all this. |

Dallas Cowboys CB DaRon Bland (foot) is scheduled to undergo foot surgery next week but should be ready for the 2026 season.
| Footballguys view: Bland does not expect the recovery to limit him in offseason workouts and OTAs. He suffered a left foot fracture during 2024's training camp, just after a breakout 2023 season that saw Bland set a new NFL record for most interceptions returned for touchdown in a single season. That sidelined him until Week 12 following surgery in 2024. The Cowboys then signed Bland to a four-year contract extension worth $92 million ($50 million guaranteed) in August, but the foot issues persisted. He missed the final three games this year and finished the season with one interception. |
Titans | Titans' list of HC Candidates includes Chief OC Nagy, multiple defensive coordinators Mon Jan 5, 01:15 PM
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Titans have started that process by requesting an interview with Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. The Titans will be able to hold an initial interview with Nagy later this week.
| Footballguys view: Nagy has been linked to the opening in Tennessee since Brian Callahan was fired early in the regular season. He has previous head coaching experience, and he worked with Titans G.M. Mike Borgonzi when Borgonzi was in the Chiefs' organization. In addition to Nagy, the Titans have requested interviews with Broncos DC Vance Joseph, Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo, and Colts DC Lou Anarumo. They are expected to add Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury to the list. We'll be watching for more. |

Ward finished the season having completed 60 percent of his passes for 3,169 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He did not throw a pick in any of his last four starts and threw only one in his previous nine starts. He threw multiple TD passes in four of his last five. The Titans have started searching for their next head coach, who will be charged with getting the most out of Ward's development. |

| Footballguys view: In addition to Williams, the first set of names includes 49ers vice president of player personnel Tariq Ahmad, Eagles assistant G.M. Alec Halaby, Rams assistant G.M. John McKay, and Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan. As Profootballtalk.com noted, Halaby, Sullivan, and Williams have made the interview rounds in recent years, and all five candidates work for teams that have been regulars in the playoffs in recent seasons. The Dolphins have missed the postseason the last two years and would like their eventual hire to have a hand in ending that drought. |
