Diving Deep With RB Valuation And Targets - Plus BBQ!

Howdy Folks,

This week is close to a wrap and I hope it's been a good one for you. I'm deep in the heart of Texas enjoying BBQ. Some of you may know, I'm as into BBQ almost as much as I am Football. But that's another story for later.

My goal here is to help you win more at Fantasy Football. We're doing that today with a killer article from Ryan Weisse as he dives deep into running back evaluation, specifically looking at targets. Read it and get an edge over the GMs in your league.

And of course, we've got some News and Notes for you too. Thanks as always to our awesome Cecil Lammey for doing the heavy lifting there. Have a great weekend and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We'll see you tomorrow with the Update.

Peace,

J

1. PIT - GM: Najee Harris a 3-down back

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Najee Harris was drafted to be a rookie year-ready three-down back, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said in an interview. 'Najee is a well-rounded running back (who) played in a pro system,' Colbert told Pro Football Talk. 'He made NFL runs routinely, and he could also play in the passing game, both as a receiver and as a blocker. He's basically a three-down back coming from an NFL-like system, plugging into a similar type system. He made NFL runs at the collegiate level. He did it at a high level. He helped them win a national championship, so hopefully he can help us win some games.'

Harris has a skill set that all teams are looking for. He doesn't need to come off the field and can work effectively as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. Harris is not a big-play threat but he can grind down a defense as the game goes on. He's consistent with his effort in pass protection and should be the no.1 back for the Steelers from day one. With QB Ben Roethlisberger in (likely) his final season, the Steelers should lean on Harris as much as possible.

2. TB - Jaelon Darden tough to tackle

Source: ProFootballFocus.com - Mike Renner

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jaelon Darden led the country with 23 broken tackles after the catch for North Texas in 2020.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Darden is a run-after-the-catch guy with speed to burn a nose for the end zone (31 touchdowns over last two seasons). The rookie from North Texas is an exciting player to watch in dynasty formats and could be a solid pro. We like his ability quickness, footwork and agility - which all make him tough to tackle.

3. CAR - WR D.J. Moore to wait for deal

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore had his fifth-year contract option picked up in April, but a long-term deal with the team isn't expected this offseason, according to Alaina Getzenberg of the Charlotte Observer.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore is scheduled to make around $11 million this year. He's gone back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and is looking to make it three in a row this season. Moore should be a favorite target of QB Sam Darnold and is a WR2 with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2021.

4. CAR - Chuba Hubbard agrees on rookie deal

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard has agreed to terms on his four-year contract with the team, the Panthers announced Thursday, May. 6. The full terms of the deal were not available.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hubbard is an exciting rookie running back who will work to earn a spot as perhaps the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey in 2021. At Oklahoma State, Hubbard showed off a hard-charging style and can stick his foot in the ground to change direction in a hurry. He's not a pile-pusher, but Hubbard is not afraid to run between the tackles. Hubbard needs to work on ball security if he wants to earn the trust of the Panthers coaching staff. Monitor his progress in dynasty formats and consider him a handcuff to McCaffrey is he wins the no.2 job.

5. DET - RB Kerryon Johnson still in Detroit

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

To update, Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson remains with the team despite a recent report that he will be released, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said Thursday, May 6. Holmes said the situation is a 'work in progress.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A "work in progress" sounds like he's about to be traded somewhere. With reports indicating he's been released, we can't imagine Johnson sticking with the team. They're moving forward with D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams as their duo on the backfield. Perhaps some team is interested in trading a late-round pick for Johnson...or perhaps he'll just get released anyway. Stay tuned.

6. BUF - Buffalo to take a look at Zach Smith

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Undrafted free-agent QB Zach Smith (Tulsa) will participate in the Buffalo Bills rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is a camp arm for the Bills. They have Josh Allen as their starter and Mitchell Trubisky as his primary backup. Behind those two, the Bills have Jake Fromm and Davis Webb on the roster. Smith didn't post great numbers in college and is a long shot to get past this tryout.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green is back with the Falcons. He originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Albany in 2020 and spent his rookie season on the team's practice squad. He'll compete for a spot on the 53-man roster this year.

8. TEN - Brady White to take part in minicamp

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Undrafted free-agent QB Brady White (Memphis) will participate in the Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White did not get an offer as an undrafted free agent, but he'll try to impress as a tryout player with the Titans. He started his college career at Arizona State and transferred to Memphis where he flourished. White filled the air with footballs in college and is not afraid to challenge a defense. We'll see if he can impress during his tryout.
