News And Notes From Around The League

Howdy Folks,

It's Super Bowl Week. And it's awesome. We've got some News and Notes so let's jump to it.

1. DET - QB Jared Goff excited about new team

Source: NFL Network - Michael Silver

Incoming Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff said he is excited to be joining the Lions and believes he can help build a winning team. The Lions have agreed to acquire Goff from the Los Angeles Rams.

Goff is happy to be with a team that wants him. Rams head coach Sean McVay and Goff had fallen out of favor, so a move was made to get rid of him. Now with the Lions, Goff will have two years to prove he can take that next step he couldn't with the Rams. After the 2022 season, Goff has zero remaining in dead money and Detroit could move on.

2. NE - New England likely to pursue QB Deshaun Watson

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson likely will be pursued by the New England Patriots if he is made available in a trade, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

John McClain, long-time NFL writer who covers the Texans, believes it will take two 1s, two 2s, and two young defensive starters -- at least -- to trade for Watson if he is on the block. He also suggests that the Texans may wait until right before the draft to trade Watson as they'll try to convince him to stay. It looks like Watson would hold out before playing for the Texans in 2021. Stay tuned.

3. LAR - QB Matthew Stafford's current deal unlikely to change

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

QB Matthew Stafford's contract is not expected to change as a result of his recent trade from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams, meaning that he will not receive an extension or a raise. He has two years left on his current deal and is slated to earn $43 million.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stafford's numbers are incredibly low (basically $21 million per year) for the current quarterback market. The Rams are in 'win now' mode with this aggressive move to get Stafford. We'll see if they can do that, and his contract is certainly not going to be an issue for bringing talent in at other positions.

4. NE - QB Matthew Stafford was not interested in move to NE

Source: NBC Sports Boston - Tom E. Curran

Incoming Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford told the Detroit Lions that he was not interested in being traded to the New England Patriots, according to a source. The Lions have agreed to trade Stafford to the Rams.

The rumblings were that Stafford wanted to play in warm weather...and that's not going to happen in New England. He also just got through the Matt Patricia era in Detroit, so going to the Patriots (where Patricia returns as an assistant) does not make a ton of sense.

5. NE - RB Rex Burkhead unlikely to return

Source: PatriotsWire - Mike Masala

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Rex Burkhead probably will not re-sign with the Patriots this offseason, in the opinion of PatriotsWire's Mike Masala.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead can make plays as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. The veteran back had found a home with the Patriots after beginning his career with the Bengals when he came out of Nebraska in 2013. A knee injury cut his 2020 season to just 10 games, and Burkhead hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2016. Some team out there would likely bring him in for veteran depth, but we can't imagine him having a fantasy relevant role.
