1. KC - QB Patrick Mahomes takes part in practice
Source: Chiefs.com
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (toe) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Jan. 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The toe injury wasn't as big of a problem as originally feared in the AFC Championship Game. Mahomes will be close to full strength by the time the Super Bowl gets here.
2. DET - Anthony Lynn officially hired
Source: DetroitLions.com
Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn was officially hired as the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions Wednesday, Jan. 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Lynn, a former Super Bowl winning running back and running backs coach in the NFL, will bring a balanced offense to the Lions. They'll feature RB D'Andre Swift as a key piece of the offense and it will be interesting to see who they add at quarterback. Matthew Stafford is expected to be traded before the start of free agency.
3. TB - Bruce Arians not looking to retire
Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said he would not consider retirement if the Bucs won the Super Bowl.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Arians has been retired before and it didn't take long for him to get back to coaching. Even if the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl, Arians should stick around as their head coach.
4. TB - WR Antonio Brown does not practice
Source: Sirius XM NFL Radio - Adam Caplan
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Jan. 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brown isn't going to do much before the Super Bowl. This week will be more rest then they'll try to get him some limited reps next week before the big game.
5. NO - New Orleans to wait for QB Drew Brees' decision
Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has not made an official announcement about his playing future, and general manager Mickey Loomis said the team will wait for Brees' decision before they decide what to do at quarterback.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It seems like Brees is leaning towards retirement. Before the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Jay Glazer reported that Brees would in fact hang up his cleats when the Saints were out of the playoffs. The team will give Brees time to make his announcement, but they should be ready to have a different starting quarterback in 2021.
6. DET - QB Matthew Stafford receiving a ton of interest
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has garnered interest from about one-third of the NFL, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, who opines the team could get a first-round pick for him.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's not a surprise given that franchise quarterbacks don't come up for trade that often. Stafford can still play at a really high level and any team who feels close to contending could add him. We should see Stafford net the Lions at least one first-round pick. The Colts and Broncos may be the front-runners for his services.
7. KC - Le'Veon Bell listed as limited
Source: Chiefs.com
Kansas City Chiefs RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bell should be limited most of the practices leading up to the Super Bowl. He should play, but he'll play a smaller role behind starter Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
8. SEA - Shane Waldron hired by Seattle
Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Shane Waldron will be hired by the Seattle Seahawks as offensive coordinator Wednesday, Jan. 27, according to sources.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's an interesting hire for Seattle as they seek to have a more balanced offense in 2021. Waldron has not called plays at any level, so that's a new responsibility he'll have to get used to. In his coaching career, he has worked under both Bill Belichick and Sean McVay.
9. IND - Owner hopes WR T.Y. Hilton returns
Source: The Indianapolis Star - Joel A. Erickson
Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent WR T.Y. Hilton is a player owner Jim Irsay would like to re-sign this offseason, but Irsay said he is not sure how free agency will play out.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Irsay can hope all he wants, he needs to pay Hilton if he wants him to stay. Injuries and inconsistencies derailed Hilton's game in 2020, so perhaps his market will be a bit cooler for the veteran. We'll see what kind of interest Hilton gets as a free agent.
10. KC - Limited practice for Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Source: Chiefs.com
Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle, hip) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The team wants to take it easy on their starter leading up to the Super Bowl. He should be limited in most practices before the big game.
11. TB - WR Antonio Brown expected to sit this week
Source: NFL.com
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Brown (knee) likely will not participate in practice this week, according to head coach Bruce Arians.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brown had to miss the NFC Championship Game with this knee injury, so an extra week of rest will help him get close for the Super Bowl. We'll know more about his availability for the big game next week.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We'll see you tomorrow with the Update.
Peace,
