News And Notes From Around The League

Howdy Folks,

We're rolling into Week 17 and we've got the News and Notes you need. Let's get to it.

J

1. KC - KC likely to sit a few players in Week 17

Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce are among the players most likely to get the day off in Week 17 after head coach Andy Reid suggested that 'certain guys will have the opportunity to rest up' in the regular-season finale versus the Los Angeles Chargers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just another example in the long line of 'don't play your fantasy championship in Week 17' stories. The Chiefs have wrapped up the lone bye in the AFC and do not need to risk anything in a meaningless game.

2. LAR - QB Jared Goff unlikely to play

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

ESPN reported, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff underwent surgery on his broken right thumb Monday in Los Angeles and is unlikely to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's not looking good for Goff. John Wolford is the backup and would likely get the start if Goff can't go.

3. CAR - RB Christian McCaffrey unlikely to suit up in finale

Source: The Athletic - Joe Person

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey (thigh) is 'probably a no' in terms of his availability in Week 17 against the New Orleans Saints, according to head coach Matt Rhule.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a sad way for McCaffrey's season to end, especially since he tried to come back and just couldn't stay healthy. McCaffrey was likely the no.1 pick in most every draft out there but he finishes 2020 having played just three games. He had 225 yards rushing and five rushing touchdowns in addition to 149 yards receiving and one touchdown.

4. WAS - QB Dwayne Haskins waived

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Washington Football Team QB Dwayne Haskins was waived Monday, Dec. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things change quickly around here. Haskins was a first-round pick for Washington in the 2019 NFL draft but rarely flashed the type of talent you'd expect from a player drafted in the opening round. He finishes his career in Washington with 12 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions and 2,804 yards passing over two seasons (16 games total).

5. TB - RB Ronald Jones on track

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones (finger) is on track to return from the Reserve/COVID-19 list before Week 17. He still has to practice with his broken finger, though.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see what Jones looks like at the end of the week. Upon his return, Leonard Fournette will likely go back to working as a backup player.

6. ARI - RB Chase Edmonds day-to-day

Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds (hip) is considered day-to-day with the hip injury that forced him to exit early in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edmonds only had a couple of catches in Week 16 before exiting the game. We'll see what he can do as the week of practice goes on.

7. NYJ - RB Frank Gore ruled out for finale

Source: The Athletic - Connor Hughes

New York Jets RB Frank Gore (lung) was diagnosed with a lung contusion Monday, Dec. 28, and will not play in Week 17 versus the New England Patriots.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore's career may not yet be over. He just became only the third member of the 16,000 yard rushing club joining Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. Gore has not rushed for over 1,000 yards in a single season since 2016, but he does have 500 yards on the ground or more in an NFL record 16 consecutive seasons. He's set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

8. WAS - WR Terry McLaurin has high-ankle sprain

Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Football Team WR Terry McLaurin (ankle) has a high-ankle sprain that kept him out for Week 16.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That type of injury doesn't heal fast and can linger if a player rushes back into action. He may not be able to play in Week 17.

9. ARI - QB Kyler Murray uncertain for Week 17

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray (leg) is dealing with a 'lower leg injury' and his status for Week 17 versus the Los Angeles Rams is uncertain, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals will take it easy on Murray during the week of practice with the hopes that he can give it a go in Week 17. Chris Streveler is the backup and would get the start if Murray can't play.

10. DEN - KJ Hamler placed in protocol

Source: The Denver Post - Kyle Newman

Denver Broncos WR KJ Hamler (concussion) was placed in the league's concussion protocol Monday, Dec. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hamler will have to get through the protocol before he's able to play in Week 17. The Broncos passing game is not what you're looking for if your fantasy championship is in Week 17.

11. LAR - RB Darrell Henderson likely out

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Rams RB Darrell Henderson (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 16 and is likely out for Week 17.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henderson was the lead back for the Rams in Week 16 but the team will now have to turn to Malcolm Brown as the starter. Rookie Cam Akers is dealing with an ankle injury all his own, so Brown could get quite the heavy workload against the Cardinals in Week 17.

12. HOU - QB Deshaun Watson says he'll play

Source: TexansWire - Mark Lane

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (hand) said he'll play in Week 17 despite a hand injury he suffered when his hand was caught underneath a facemask on the follow through of a throw.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The injury looked painful as Watson was trying to complete a pass and had his hand caught. The team will likely limit him in practice this week.

13. CIN - RB Joe Mixon ruled out for Week 17

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon (foot) will not play in Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals will turn to Gio Bernard and Samaje Perine against the Ravens in Week 17. That's a tough matchup, so Bernard is more of a RB2/flex option and Perine is more of a flex player. Mixon is set to be a free agent in 2021. He finished this season with 428 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns in six games.

14. SF - Brandon Aiyuk ruled out for Week 17

Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 16 against the Arizona Cardinals and will not play in Week 17 versus the Seattle Seahawks.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Aiyuk had a fine rookie season for the 49ers and we appreciate his upside for the future. He finishes his first pro season with 60 catches for 748 yards and five receiving touchdowns. Entering the 2021 season, Aiyuk should perform like a WR2/flex play for Fantasy GMs.

15. NYG - TE Evan Engram nursing ankle injury

Source: The Athletic - Dan Duggan

New York Giants TE Evan Engram (ankle) suffered a left ankle injury late in Week 16, but head coach Joe Judge is 'optimistic' about his availability in Week 17 versus the Dallas Cowboys.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll save the optimism for later in the week. Judge admitted he will need to see Engram in practice before making a decision on his Week 17 status and that the tight end will meet with the team's doctors for a second time.

16. TEN - PK Stephen Gostkowski on COVID list

Source: TennesseeTitans.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans PK Stephen Gostkowski was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Dec. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll hopefully have more details on this soon.

17. IND - Indy puts two in concussion protocol

Source: FOX 59 Indianapolis - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (concussion) and S Khari Willis (concussion) were placed in the league's concussion protocol Monday, Dec. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's see if Pittman can get through the protocol this week and play in Week 17. There's a chance his rookie season may be over, so we'll have to stay tuned to the practice report. Pittman has had some flashes this year but he's also been banged up and missed time. We still are excited about his prospects in dynasty formats.

18. KC - WR Sammy Watkins likely out for Week 17

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins suffered a calf injury in Week 16 versus the Atlanta Falcons.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins has another injury, something Chiefs fans and Fantasy GMs are already used to. The expectation is that Watkins will sit in Week 17 and be available for the team's first playoff game in the Divisional Round after the Chiefs wrapped up the AFC's only bye with their win over the Falcons.

19. ATL - WR Julio Jones could go in season finale?

Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Will McFadden

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (hamstring) worked out 'a little bit' on Monday, Dec. 28, according to interim head coach Raheem Morris, who added the team will wait 'until he is right' but also said 'if (Jones) is able to (play in Week 17), he will.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As per usual with Jones, wait until Friday before setting him in your lineup and sometimes that's not even enough. Jones doesn't want to be shut down for the year but that's something the Falcons may decide for him. He's signed through the 2023 season and has a cap hit of $23 million in 2021.

20. NE - WR Julian Edelman to stay on IR a bit longer

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (knee) is not expected to be activated in time to play in Week 16 against the Buffalo Bills, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, who also reports Edelman is unlikely to suit up for the regular-season finale versus the New York Jets.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It looks like Edelman's 2020 season is done with just six games played. He only caught 21 passes for 315 yards and zero touchdowns. Edelman is signed through the 2021 season and has a cap hit around $6.1 million next season. The Patriots could let Edelman go and have a dead cap charge next year of $2.6 million.

21. BUF - WR John Brown off IR but lands on COVID list

Source: Buffalo Bills PR

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR John Brown (ankle) was activated from the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 28, but placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list along with S Josh Thomas and RB Christian Wade after being identified as close contacts to RB T.J. Yeldon, who was placed on the list one day earlier.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown may be done for the regular season. He could test negative for five days and be ready to play in Week 17. However, the Bills might choose for him to shut it down until the Wild Card Round.
