1. CLE - RB Nick Chubb cleared to return

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb (concussion) on Saturday, Aug. 22, cleared concussion protocol and is expected to return to the field later in the day for practice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That was about as quick a return from a concussion as you could hope for. As long as he gets through camp without another head injury, this shouldn't affect how we view Chubb in drafts.

2. ATL - RB Todd Gurley having work managed

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons RB Todd Gurley (knee) will be limited in practice Saturday, Aug. 22, as part of workload management plan head coach Dan Quinn said. Gurley is expected to return to more work Sunday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nothing new here, but it is yet another reminder that Gurley is dealing with a degenerative knee condition and carries risk of the issue flaring up at any point in the season.

3. NE - QB Jarrett Stidham returns to practice Friday

Source: 1 No Source

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham (leg) was spotted throwing passes to WR Julian Edelman during the portion of practice which was open to the media Friday, Aug. 21. He had undergone precautionary tests at a hospital for a leg injury Thursday, Aug. 20, but all of the tests came back negative.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The reports from yesterday might have been bleaker than the reality, but we should still consider Stidham out of the competition to start Week 1 vs Miami.

4. NE - PK Nick Folk visits Saturday

Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss

Free-agent PK Nick Folk (Patriots) met with the New England Patriots Saturday, Aug. 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots spent a fifth-round pick on Justin Rohrwasser, but he has barely kicked at all in camp, with no explanation from the team. Folk made from 14 of 17 field goal attempts with New England last year and makes sense as a fall back if Rohrwasser isn't ready. The team could also bring back Stephen Gostkowski, who remains a free agent.

5. MIA - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to return Saturday

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (personal) will return to practice Saturday, Aug. 22, according to head coach Brian Flores.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tua Tagovailoa and Josh Rosen weren't impressive in his absence, so the offense will welcome back Fitzpatrick, who should start for at least the first few weeks of the season.

6. CLE - DE Myles Garrett returning to team drills

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (hamstring) told reporters Saturday, Aug. 22, he is returning to team drills after being limited to individual workouts earlier in the week while recovering from a hamstring injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign that the injury was minor and it won't affect Garrett's availability for the season opener against the Ravens.

7. NYJ - Two leave practice early

Source: ESPN.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Josh Adams (hamstring) and LB Patrick Onwuasor left practice early Saturday, Aug. 22, because of injuries.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Onwuasor is one of many bidding for snaps at inside linebacker. Adams saw his prospects for playing time dim when the Jets signed Frank Gore, but he is still a practice squad or end of the roster candidate.

8. CLE - TE David Njoku sits Saturday

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku (wrist) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Njoku has had a slow camp and fourth-round pick Harrison Bryant has outplayed him consistently. If he can't stay on the field, then Njoku could lose time to Bryant and not get it back when he's healthy.

9. NYJ - NYJ activate trio of players

Source: ESPN.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets LB Ryan Griffin (ankle) and LB Avery Williamson (knee) on Saturday, Aug. 22, were activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list while TE Daniel Brown (undisclosed) was activated off the Non-Football Injury list, and all three participated in individual drills in practice Saturday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It was a longer wait than expected for Williamson, but the team will welcome him back after C.J. Mosley opted out. Neville Hewitt, Blake Cashman and James Burgess will all be in the mix for snaps this year at inside linebacker, but Williamson should be the most valuable in IDP leagues. Griffin will be in on two tight end sets, but Chris Herndon has had a great camp and should be the clear #1 tight end, worthy of a late round pick as your #2 tight end.

10. DAL - Tyron Smith restructures deal

Source: Around The NFL

Dallas Cowboys OT Tyron Smith has restructured his contract, it was reported Saturday, Aug. 22. The restructure involved converting $8.9 million of salary to a signing bonus and added a year to the deal that automatically voids, creating about $7 million in 2020 cap room.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys probably have designs on going deep in the playoffs, and this cap room allows them to make a move if they need to fill a key weakness during the season.

11. NYJ - Denzel Mims could return soon

Source: ESPN.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims (hamstring) hopefully will be able to return to practice in the near future, according to head coach Adam Gase.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mims will compete with Chris Hogan for snaps outside opposite Breshad Perriman, who has had a good camp while establishing chemistry with Sam Darnold. The Jets second round pick is off of the redraft radar for now, but should at least be on the waiver wire watch list.

12. WAS - Two teams interested in Ziggy Ansah

Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

The Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens are reportedly monitoring free-agent DL Ziggy Ansah (Lions). He has bulked up to 280 pounds and recently sent a workout video to NFL teams to prove that his shoulder is completely healthy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ansah has had trouble staying healthy, but if he's physically sound, he can still provide edge rush contributions. The Bills and Ravens are both deficient in that area and both teams have big expectations this year, so it makes sense that they would be monitoring him.

13. SF - D.J. Jones in concussion protocol

Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

San Francisco 49ers DT D.J. Jones (concussion) has recovered from a shoulder injury but on Saturday, Aug. 22, was placed in the concussion protocol, head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is a key player in the 49ers run defense and he could become a more valuable asset if he can develop as a pass rusher. No serious issues with the shoulder is a good break for the team despite the concussion protocol designation.

14. SEA - Kyle Fuller to miss first two games

Source: Seahawks.com

Seattle Seahawks C Kyle E. Fuller has been suspended for the first two games of the 2020 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He was trying to make the team as a backup center. Fuller will likely end up back on the practice squad. Ethan Pocic and BJ Finney are competing to start at center to replace Justin Britt and Joey Hunt, who are both free agents.

15. BAL - WR Antoine Wesley to undergo surgery

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Baltimore Ravens WR Antoine Wesley (shoulder) will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery next week, a source said Saturday, Aug. 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wesley was an intriguing UDFA out of Texas Tech last year because of his length and fluid athleticism, but he'll remain a practice squad player at best going into 2021.

16. MIN - Ezra Cleveland to serve in backup role

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Dane Mizutani

Minnesota Vikings OT Ezra Cleveland will not begin the regular season as a starter on the offensive line, even though head coach Mike Zimmer has been pleased with his development. He has received reps exclusively at left guard during training camp, as a backup to OGs Dakota Dozier and Aviante Collins, after playing left tackle at Boise State.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cleveland is staying on the same side of the line at least, and it's possible the team still sees him as a left tackle long term, but he is having to learn to react faster in his new role.

17. CHI - RB David Montgomery aims to get quicker

Source: NFL Network - Stacey Dales

Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery said Saturday, Aug. 22, he's focused on his diet and losing weight this offseason after he was disappointed in his quickness and speed in 2019.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Montgomery correctly identified what was holding him back last year, along with some indecisiveness on his carries that exacerbated the effect of the speed/quickness deficiency. He is a healthy amount of work for his ADP and if he improves, he'll be a value as a discount RB2 in drafts.

18. NYJ - Several defensive players miss practice

Source: ESPN.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets CB Pierre Desir (hamstring), CB Brian Poole (dehydration), LB James Burgess (back) and DE Jabari Zuniga (quadriceps) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The practice watch for Desir continues as the Jets projected #1 corner will be needed Week 1 against the Bills duo of Stefon Diggs and John Brown.
