Lions | Dennis Northcutt out, Stefan Logan added    Sun Sep 5, 06:44 PM

The Detroit Lions have released WR Dennis Northcutt and claimed free-agent WR Stefan Logan (Steelers) off of waivers, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: Logan may not contribute much on offense, but could be valuable to the Lions in the return game.

Lions | Dennis Northcutt to compete for roster spot    Sat Jul 17, 03:52 PM

Detroit Lions WR Dennis Northcutt will have to compete with several of the team's younger receivers for a roster spot during training camp, reports MLive.com's Tom Kowalski. The Lions would like to get younger at the position but like Northcutt's consistency and production he has show during his tenure.

Footballguys view: Northcutt could stick around as a fourth receiver if second-year WR Derrick Williams doesn't start living up to his potential.

Lions | Northcutt back to work    Sun May 30, 03:39 PM

CBSSports.com reports Lions WR Dennis Northcutt returned to full practice this week. Northcutt and second-year WR Derrick Williams returned the majority of kicks during special teams drills on Thursday, a battle that should last well into training camp. Williams looked sharper, mostly because Northcutt was still recovering from injury.

Lions | WR Williams in 2 battles    Sun May 30, 03:27 PM

CBSSports.com reports Lions second-year WR Derrick Williams is involved in two battles heading into training camp: Not only is he competing with veteran Dennis Northcutt for the kick-return job, but he's also vying with WR Bryant Johnson for the No. 3 role behind Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson. Williams has shown excellent speed in drills for both positions, though he seems ahead of Northcutt and behind Johnson.

Footballguys view: Williams was the best player coming out of high school when he went to Penn State. He never lived up to his potential for the Nittany Lions, but still has high upside because of his physical ability. We'll see if he can finally play up to his potential in the pros.

Lions | Tony Scheffler, Dennis Northcutt practice Thursday    Fri May 28, 12:02 PM

Detroit Lions TE Tony Scheffler (foot) and WR Dennis Northcutt (undisclosed) participated in the team's offseason workout Thursday, May 27, reports Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free-Press.

Footballguys view: We'll be monitoring the chemistry and timing between Scheffler and Matthew Stafford. If they click and Brandon Pettigrew is slow to get back to full speed, Scheffler could be one of the best values at TE position.

Lions | D. Williams, FitzSimmons used in slot    Mon Nov 9, 02:41 PM

John Niyo, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions WR Derrick Williams and TE Casey FitzSimmons were used for slot-receiving duties in Week 9 after the team benched WR Dennis Northcutt. Williams had no catches and FitzSimmons had six for 42 yards.

Footballguys view: With Calvin Johnson blanket covered by the defense, Matthew Stafford had to look elsewhere and went to FitzSimmons and Brandon Pettigrew quite a bit on Sunday.

Lions | Receivers struggled Week 8    Sun Nov 1, 08:00 PM

Lions | Schefter doesn't think Calvin Johnson will play Sunday    Wed Oct 14, 11:41 AM

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports on his Twitter feed that "the more I hear, the more I think Lions WR Calvin Johnson will not play Sunday at Green Bay due to his sprained knee."

Footballguys view: Lions coach Jim Schwartz is very protective of information about injuries, so this could be the best indication we get all week about Johnson's status. Bryant Johnson, Dennis Northcutt, and Brandon Pettigrew all become better desperation plays this week if Calvin is out, but it would definitely hurt the value of Daunte Culpepper (or Matthew Stafford) and Kevin Smith vs. the Packers.

Lions | Northcutt limited in practice Wednesday    Wed Sep 9, 06:52 PM

Detroit Lions WR Dennis Northcutt (hand) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Lions | Northcutt in as the slot receiver    Mon Sep 7, 08:59 PM

John Niyo, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions WR Dennis Northcutt (thumb) has been pegged as the team's slot receiver. He missed all of the preseason games with a thumb injury.

Footballguys view: Northcutt is a savvy veteran, that could do some damage from the slot. He'll also give rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford a reliable target, especially when a play breaks down.

Lions | Northcutt's case unlikely to be reviewed by league    Tue Jul 14, 07:00 PM

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions WR Dennis Northcutt, who involved in a lawsuit that involves his ex-girlfriend, likely will not face any disciplinary action from the league because the league usually does not review civil cases, according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see if that principle gets tested by a particularly egregious case. Northcutt probably won't get drafted, but at least now he becomes a possible hot waiver wire pickup after week 1.

Lions | Northcutt likely to replace Curry as slot receiver, could be suspended    Tue Jul 14, 11:49 AM

Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports that new Lions acquisition WR Dennis Northcutt should replace Ronald Curry in the slot. Kowalski writes that Curry " hasn't shown much so far in the off-season workouts" and that "there are concerns that his speed has diminished." Kowalski speculates that the team would not have traded for Northcutt if they were happy with Curry. He also writes that Northcutt could be suspended for at least one game because of an incident involving his ex-girlfriend. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said "We're looking into this."

Footballguys view: We feel compelled to keep reminding you that Northcutt looked like he discovered the fountain of youth late last season. Bryant Johnson is slated to start opposite Calvin Johnson, but he had trouble staying healthy last year. Don't be surprised if Northcutt starts at some point in the season. There were 98 receptions to go around to receivers not named Calvin Johnson on the Lions last year, so there is fantasy value to be had beyond Megatron, especially in PPR leagues.

Lions | Northcutt does not have opinion on QBs    Thu Jul 2, 12:49 PM

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions WR Dennis Northcutt said he does not have an opinion on QBs Daunte Culpepper or Matthew Stafford, but wants to work with whichever will be the starter so he can build chemistry. 'I don't care who our quarterback is. I just want to be able to work with him, stay after, catch balls, get on the same page, build chemistry and go win football games.' Northcutt said.

Footballguys view: The entire Lions receiving corps had better get used to both quarterbacks. Daunte Culpepper could begin the season as the starting QB, only to give way to Matthew Stafford at some point during the year. However, the reports about Stafford have been extremely positive and the Lions could decide to start the rookie from day one.

Lions | Northcutt excited to play slot receiver    Wed Jul 1, 08:55 PM

Nicholos J. Cotsonika, from the Detroit Free Press, reports WR Dennis Northcutt is excited about the trade that sent him from Jacksonville to Detroit. "I'm excited," Northcutt said today in a telephone interview. "I feel like the Lions went out and won the Super Bowl last year, for real. I'm just excited about playing this game for a team that wants me and came out and got me."

Footballguys view: Northcutt is expected to play in the slot between Calvin Johnson and Bryant Johnson, although he believes he can line up anywhere. "I think that's one of the biggest reasons they brought me in was to get in the slot," Northcutt said. "Obviously that's my biggest strength. That's has been my biggest strength through my nine years of playing in the NFL is working the slot. That's where I've made my money basically. But I have been able to play outside."

NFL | Alexander-Northcutt deal finalized    Tue Jun 30, 07:05 PM

Adam Caplan, of Scout.com, reports that the deal sending S Gerald Alexander to the Jacksonville Jaguars and WR Dennis Northcutt to the Detroit Lions has been finalized.

Footballguys view: Alexander started as a rookie, but he became expendable after the Lions drafted Louis Delmas with the first pick of the second round. He could have IDP value if he can beat out Sean Considine to start at strong safety. Considine wasn't that good during his time with the Eagles, so it's not a stretch to see Alexander winning that job. Northcutt will likely compete with Ronald Curry to be the Lions slot receiver, but he could break into the starting lineup if Bryant Johnson's injury woes continue. Northcutt found the fountain of youth in December last year, and if he plays that way again this year, he could be marginally relevant in start 3 WR PPR leagues.

Jaguars | Traded Northcutt because of other receivers    Sat Jun 27, 04:54 PM

Michael C. Wright, of The Florida Times-Union, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to trade WR Dennis Northcutt to the Detroit Lions because the coaching staff did not believe he was a significant upgrade over the team's current rookie receivers to justify paying his $2.75 million salary this season, according to team sources.

Footballguys view: The Jags will be looking to a couple of young receivers to produce in 2009. Rookies Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard are expected to pick up the slack now that Northcutt is gone, and coaches like rookie Tiquan Underwood as well. Thomas is a smaller receiver that turns into a RB after the catch and reminds some of Carolina's Steve Smith. Dillard is super athletic, has a great vertical leap and glue for hands. Underwood is a tall and wiry receiver that has good build up speed and knows how to use his body to shield defenders away from the ball. We think Thomas makes the perfect slot receiver, but Dillard could also play a role - especially if Mike Walker continues to struggle with injuries in 2009.

Lions | Team acquires Northcutt    Fri Jun 26, 08:33 PM

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Detroit Lions have traded S Gerald Alexander to the Jacksonville Jaguars for WR Dennis Northcutt, according to multiple sources. The trade was agreed upon Friday, June 26, and is expected to be finalized next week.

Footballguys view: Northcutt will likely compete with Ronald Curry to play the slot, and he could even push Bryant Johnson to start, especially if Johnson's injury woes continue.

Jaguars | Looking to trade Northcutt    Wed Jun 24, 05:58 PM

Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to trade WR Dennis Northcutt, according to his agent Jerome Stanley.

Footballguys view: Northcutt was the Jags best receiver at the end of last season when Matt Jones was suspended. Northcutt caught five balls for 127 yards and a touchdown in a win over Green Bay on Dec. 14, and had eight catches for 101 yards and a touchdown in a Dec. 18 loss to Indianapolis. Despite his late season success we can't imagine a team giving up anything more than a late round pick for the veteran receiver. The Jags signed Torry Holt this offseason, and have rookies like Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard that could more than pick up the slack if Northcutt is traded/released.

Jaguars | Holt, Walker and Northcutt enter as top three receivers    Fri May 1, 01:37 PM

Michael C. Wright, of The Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WRs Torry Holt and Mike Walker will likely start minicamp as starters on the outside and WR Dennis Northcutt will work as the team's slot receiver in three receiver sets.

Footballguys view: Torry Holt is a lock to be a week 1 starter as long as he is healthy. After Holt the entire depth chart is up in the air. Mike Walker looked better than Brandon Marshall during their time at UCF, but he has failed to stay healthy during his entire pro career. Northcutt is a savvy veteran, but how much does he have left in the tank?
