Broncos | Drew Lock, Teddy Bridgewater still even    Mon Aug 2, 02:50 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock and QB Teddy Bridgewater are competing for the starting quarterback job, and head coach Vic Fangio said neither quarterback has taken the lead at this point. Lock and Bridgewater will continue to evenly split snaps during practice over the next few days.

Footballguys view: After five practices, with no pads on, things have been fairly close. Bridgewater had a bad day on Saturday (three interceptions) and Lock had a bad day last Thursday (no completions in team drills until final drill), but for the most part things are even. The team's preseason games will likely decide the starter as there's been little separation in practice. The offense will run the ball early and often in 2021. Who wins the QB job will determine a pecking order at wide receiver. If Lock is the starter, that's better for Courtland Sutton. If Bridgewater wins the job that's better for Jerry Jeudy. Stay tuned.

Broncos | Denver QBs to split reps evenly for now    Tue Jul 27, 01:48 PM

Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater are expected to get an equal number of reps during training camp until a decision is made on which one will be named the starter, according to comments made by head coach Vic Fangio on Tuesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: It's a 50-50 battle between Lock and Bridgewater...at least that's what the team wants to push. Bridgewater may be the preferred quarterback as the team feels they can win a lot of games with him as their starter. Lock has higher upside, but he's not as good as Bridgewater based on what he did last year compared to what Bridgewater has done during his career. We'll see if Lock, in this totally 50-50 competition (wink), can impress more than Bridgewater and finally play up to the potential he's briefly flashed (mainly in 2019) as a pro.

Broncos | Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Lock to work out    Sat Jun 26, 09:02 AM

Denver Broncos QBs Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock plan to get together for some throwing sessions in South Florida in the weeks leading up to training camp.

Footballguys view: The competition in Denver is 50-50 according to head coach Vic Fangio. During OTAs and mandatory minicamp, Bridgewater was steady while Lock's performance was up and down. We imagine that continues in training camp, and it will be the preseason games that determine who is going to start for the Broncos in 2021.

Broncos | Drew Lock bothered by blister    Mon Jun 7, 02:29 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (hand) participated in practice Monday, June 7, despite having a blister on his throwing hand. Head coach Vic Fangio said he is not sure how much if affected his throwing during practice.

Footballguys view: He's in a 50-50 battle for the starting job with Teddy Bridgewater after being handed the job last year. Lock was one of the worst starters in 2020, and Bridgewater gives him real competition for the top spot on the depth chart. Over the course of OTAs, Bridgewater has looked like the better quarterback (including 11-on-11 drills on Monday) while Lock still looks like his old self. This battle should go well into training camp, so Lock has to get healthy and get better to win the job.

Broncos | Drew Lock, Teddy Bridgewater to play lots in preseason    Tue Jun 1, 08:01 PM

Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater will get plenty of playing time in the preseason, according to head coach Vic Fangio Tuesday, June 1. 'Probably play them a little more in preseason than teams may play their No. 1 quarterback,' Fangio said. '... These guys need snaps and they need to play, especially when you have a young quarterback like we have in Drew and a new quarterback like we have in Teddy. Hopefully we'll get them a lot of snaps and the decision will be made easy.'

Footballguys view: It's a 50-50 competition between Lock and Bridgewater this offseason. We're not going to get any real separation between the two in OTAs and mandatory minicamp. However, when training camp hits around August we should see this competition get even more heated. The preseason games should be the determining factor when it comes to the Broncos starter for Week 1.

Broncos | Denver to have 50-50 QB battle    Fri May 14, 02:43 PM

Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater will split offseason repetitions '50-50,' head coach Vic Fangio said Friday, May 14.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater is going to get a shot to be the starter. Lock was the starter for most of the year in 2020, but he was performing poorly and turning the ball over in most games. We'll see if Lock's offseason work, including film study with Peyton Manning, helps him beat out Bridgewater. The early season schedule for the Broncos is great (Giants, Jaguars, Jets) so the offense could get off to a hot start.

Broncos | Drew Lock, Teddy Bridgewater to share snaps    Sun May 2, 01:38 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock and QB Teddy Bridgewater will evenly share the snaps during offseason workouts and training camp, according to head coach Vic Fangio.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are going to have a training camp competition to see who is going to be the starter. Neither Lock or Bridgewater are exciting options for the Broncos, but this team wants to win with swarming defense and a strong rushing attack. The one who turns the ball over the least likely wins the job.

Broncos | Denver QBs folded under pressure last year    Wed Apr 28, 03:36 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock led the league with eight interceptions on throws under pressure in 2020, according to Pro Football Focus. New Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater - then a member of the Carolina Panthers - was second in the league with seven.

Footballguys view: Lock and Bridgewater make up the Broncos quarterback room...for now. With the no.9 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, we'll see if the Broncos go ahead and select a quarterback to throw in the mix. If Lock and Bridgewater are it for the Broncos, then both need to be better when the heat is on.

Broncos | Drew Lock will need to compete    Thu Apr 22, 02:48 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has a fan in new general manager George Paton, but Paton quickly added that the team still plans on bringing in outside competition for the starting job this offseason. 'We do like Drew Lock,' Paton said at a news conference Thursday, April 22. 'What we don't want to do is force (competition). We still have time. There's a trade market. We still have the draft. We're going to be patient ... not force it. But we do want competition'

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Lock was one of the worst starting quarterbacks last year and the team is looking for an upgrade. That will come through a veteran via trade (like Teddy Bridgewater) or via the first round in the 2021 NFL draft (Justin Fields anyone?). Either way, Lock will not be handed the job like he was last year. Let's see if he can respond to the added pressure.

Broncos | Drew Lock reports for workouts    Mon Apr 19, 06:25 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock was one of about 20 players to report for the start of offseason workouts Monday, April 19.

Footballguys view: Lock has been working out as much as possible as he prepares for a make-it-or-break-it season with the Broncos...if he's still the starter in Week 1. The team is in the market for an upgrade at the position, which means they may use a first-round pick on a quarterback in the 2021 NFL draft. Lock knows his days are numbered with the Broncos if he doesn't start playing better.

Broncos | Drew Lock working with Peyton Manning    Mon Apr 12, 01:24 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has been working with former NFL QB Peyton Manning this offseason, according to OG Dalton Risner. Lock and Manning have been watching film during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Lock needed to get better this offseason when it comes to understanding what he's seeing on the field. He's got the physical tools, but his propensity to throw interceptions needs to be cleaned up. It might be too late for him with the Broncos if they move up in the draft for a first-round quarterback.

Broncos | Drew Lock to have competition    Fri Mar 5, 12:56 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock struggled with inconsistency in his second season as a starter and is expected to have competition in 2021, even if the Broncos are unable to land a clear upgrade such as the Houston Texans' Deshaun Watson. 'Until Drew proves to be the next great quarterback like the ones that the Denver franchise has been used to in years past, or the ones certain teams around the league have, we're going to always try and bring in competition,' Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said during a news conference Thursday, March 4. 'But I have confidence that Drew can continue to improve.'

Footballguys view: Lock was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in 2020. He threw too many interceptions, got hurt again and missed time plus generally did not look comfortable in the Pat Shurmur offense. The Broncos are going to be all in on getting Deshaun Watson from the Texans. If they don't get Watson, then expect Lock to compete with somebody like Ryan Fitzpatrick in training camp.

Broncos | Drew Lock on shaky ground?    Tue Jan 19, 02:09 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock is a player that president of football operations John Elway is 'still high on,' but Elway indicated Tuesday, Jan. 19, that new general manager George Paton 'will continue to look to fill that spot if we don't think that Drew is that guy.'

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Lock did look better as the 2020 season went on but he was only able to look good against bad defenses like the Panthers or the Raiders. He still struggles way too much under pressure and it looked like he was working with a reduced playbook later in the year. The Broncos gave Lock the 2020 season to see if he could be 'the guy' for them, and he failed to impress. They are at least going to bring in competition at the quarterback position if not out-and-out replace Lock as the starter for 2021.

Broncos | Drew Lock receives tepid endorsement    Tue Jan 5, 03:40 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock 'can be' the team's starting quarterback in 2021, according to head coach Vic Fangio, who noted Lock will 'have to improve.'

Footballguys view: Lock improved slightly as the year went on but he regularly was one of the worst quarterbacks in the league, so even average play was an upgrade. A new general manager will have to decide what caliber of competition to bring in this offseason. John Elway stepped away as the GM and he was Lock's biggest supporter. There's a reason why Fangio is rather lukewarm when talking about the young QB.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock went 20-for-32 for 132 yards and one touchdown with an interception against the Buffalo Bills in Week 15. He lost a fumble that was returned by Buffalo for a touchdown.

Footballguys view: Lock has had some big stat lines in comebacks and against the Panthers, but it's pretty clear that he's not the quarterback of the future for the Broncos, even though they could give him another shot at the job next year.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock completed 21-of-27 passes for 280 yards, a career-high four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 14 game against the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Lock's good games have come mostly in desperation comeback efforts. This week he picked on an undermanned Panthers defense with help from KJ Hamler's speed. He'll be a boom/bust QB2/Superflex against the Bills on Saturday.

Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles were activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: The Broncos should have Drew Lock on the field as their starter on Sunday night against the Chiefs. There could be some discipline for Lock from the team or the league but we doubt that includes a benching. We could see fines for the quarterback room after they failed to follow COVID protocol and all had to miss the game against the Saints in Week 12.

Broncos | DEN QBs cleared    Tue Dec 1, 11:14 AM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock, QB Brett Rypien and QB Blake Bortles tested negative Tuesday, Dec. 1, for COVID-19 and have cleared protocols.

Footballguys view: Lock should be under center for the Broncos on Sunday night against the Chiefs in Week 13. There might be some discipline from the team or the league since this quarterback room violated COVID protocols last week and were all unavailable to play in Week 12. Lock is running out of time to prove himself as a potential franchise quarterback for the Broncos. Right now, Lock is just trying to prove that he can be adequate consistently.

Updating a previous story, Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles have been ruled ineligible for the game Sunday, Nov. 29, against the New Orleans Saints due to COVID-19 contact tracing, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Absolutely huge news for the Broncos here. They are not going to forfeit this game but have to move forward with RB Royce Freeman (their emergency quarterback) as the starter. They can run Wildcat formation with RBs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay if they choose. Also, it has been suggested that practice squad WR Kendall Hinton (a three-year starting QB at Wake Forest) could step into the role. Stay tuned.

Broncos | Drew Lock gets full practice    Wed Nov 25, 06:05 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (ribs) participated in full at practice Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Footballguys view: Lock was bad in the first half against the Dolphins last week. Then, he became a game manager in the second half and the team won due to their rushing attack and defense. Lock's inability to read the full field holds back his production. The Broncos should continue to bring him along with baby steps each week as they try to determine whether or not he's a franchise-level quarterback.

Footballguys view: Ribs injuries come down to pain tolerance. Lock is tough and that is not in question. What is in question is his ability to be a quality starter in this league. Lock has looked like he's regressed from last year and may not be the long-term answer for the Broncos. He's running out of time to prove otherwise.

Footballguys view: Lock will start if he's healthy enough to play, which probably would Miami a better D/ST to start this week. Tim Patrick would be a better play with Lock, while KJ Hamler and Jerry Jeudy would be better plays with Brett Rypien.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Lock can play on Sunday against the Dolphins. He's in a lot of pain according to reports and it will come down to how much of that he can tolerate and still perform at an acceptable level. Brett Rypien could get the start for the Broncos if Lock is out.

Broncos | Drew Lock iffy for Week 11    Mon Nov 16, 02:38 PM

Fangio is holding out hope, however, and told reporters Lock has the type of injury that can improve over the course of a week.

Footballguys view: Lock is clearly not himself out there as he looks like one of the worst quarterbacks in the league. Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock went 10-for-24 for 189 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions against the New England Patriots in Week 6.

Footballguys view: Lock wasn't very nuanced in his play and forced the ball to his college teammate Albert Okwuegbunam. He also threw two picks late that gave the Patriots a chance to win. He doesn't seem like anything but a desperation play, even in 2QB/Superflex leagues. Lock faces the Chiefs next week, which won't be as tough a draw as the Patriots secondary.
