Sam Darnold Contract Terms
Sam Darnold is signing a deal with the Seattle Seahawks for three years and $100.5M with $55M guaranteed, per Adam Schefter.
Fantasy Football Impact
After tearing their offense apart over the last week, the Seahawks are betting on Sam Darnold to be the quarterback of their future. The passing nucleus in Seattle has been Geno Smith, DK Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett over the last few years. This season, Darnold will have budding superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba as his primary receiver. Outside of that, there’s still a lot to fix. Jake Bobo is next up on the depth chart. Tight end Noah Fant has a year left on his contract. But the strength of this offense lies in their backfield with the dynamic duo of Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.
Darnold had a nice bounceback in 2024, playing MVP-level football for the Vikings. He put up the best numbers of his career without a close second. But many Darnold doubters quickly point out the supporting cast and coaching staff. Kevin O’Connell has deservedly earned the "Quarterback Whisperer" label throughout his career. Throwing to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson can cover up a lot of flaws. He also benefited from an above-average offensive line and run game. He won’t be afforded those same luxuries in Seattle. Although Smith-Njigba has shown much promise, a porous and incomplete offensive line is impossible to ignore. And there’s no true secondary option behind Smith-Njigba. After losing Tyler Lockett in free agency and Metcalf via trade, expect the Seahawks to address the wide receiver position soon. They’re flush with draft picks, possessing the 18th in Round 1, two seconds, two thirds, and five Day 3 picks. There’s also no dearth of capable veterans available in free agency. It would be shocking if the Seahawks don’t make hefty draft or financial investments at wide receiver.

Fantasy Football Fallout
It’s difficult to speculate on anything right now as there’s still so much in flux. Darnold is the quarterback. Smith-Njigba is the WR1. But this team must add multiple pass catchers and offensive line members to trot out a respectable NFL team next season.
Regardless of your stance on Darnold, he was probably the best available quarterback in this offseason’s class. He also has the benefit of youth on his side, being just 27 years old. We saw the growth last year, but there’s still more room to grow. The threat of a legitimate quarterback should benefit the running back duo, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Seahawks trade one for even more picks in this year’s Draft. And considering the possibility that the Seahawks would roll out Sam Howell or a rookie quarterback, this is at least good news for the Seahawks' pass catchers.
Given the available quarterback positions around the league, this isn’t the best landing spot for Darnold. Of course, he is set to explode in value with just a bit of success in 2025. But this is a major downgrade from the environment he played in last year. Darnold has been a polarizing figure throughout his short NFL career. But he can reshape his public image now, for better or worse.

Overview
After a tumultuous start to his NFL career, Darnold was dropped into a prime position to bounce back in Minnesota. His job going forward will be a bit tougher as he leads a rebuild in Seattle, but they invested enough to see it through for at least the next two years, for better or worse.
