There may not be a more overused term in fantasy football than "sleeper".
(Says the dude who put it right in the title and everything.)
Every year, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of articles highlighting potential fantasy football "sleepers"—under-the-radar players with the potential to blast by their modest asking prices on draft day. The problem is that many of these articles highlight the same guys.
If 800 people call the same running back a sleeper, he's not asleep anymore. Ol' boy is fully awake.
However, this isn't to say that all the sleeper talk has no value. Sure, big names like Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson may drive the conversation in draft season, but it's the mid-round and late-round values that win leagues.
With the 2025 NFL Draft still to come, there's much that could change between now and the summer. And it's still too early to have much in the way of ADP information. But each player in this column slots outside the top 25 at their respective positions in Footballguys' early rankings.
And each has the potential to exceed their modest fantasy price tag in a major way.
QB Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks
Darnold was one of the biggest winners of free agency this year from a financial perspective—no offensive player who switched teams received a larger contract than the 27-year-old, who replaced Geno Smith in Seattle. While speaking to reporters, Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said that he believes Darnold's huge 2024 season was no fluke, and that the former third overall pick can get the Seahawks into the Super Bowl.
"We have to create an environment where we get the best version of Sam," he said. "It's on tape what he can do. The wins, the teammate (he is), the work ethic, but we have to create something where he's going to work every day, he's confident, we're doing the things he does really well, building the squad around him, playing complementary football on the other two phases, then let him do his thing."
Is Darnold going to once again rank fifth in the league in passing yards and touchdown passes and seventh in fantasy points among quarterbacks? But Geno Smith was 12th in fantasy points at the position a year ago and was a top-five fantasy quarterback in 2022. Even with Cooper Kupp replacing DK Metcalf at wide receiver in the Emerald City, Darnold is undervalued.
RB Javonte Williams, Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys got a 1,000-yard rushing season last year out of Rico Dowdle, but Dowdle is gone now after joining the Carolina Panthers in free agency. The Cowboys replaced Dowdle with a combination of Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. While those signings haven't inspired much enthusiasm from fantasy managers, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters he's excited about what the 24-year-old brings to his second team—and unconcerned about Williams' injury history.
"I didn't really see anything that said that, ‘Oh, the injury was an issue,'" Schottenheimer said. "Usually, it does take guys a little bit of time coming off the ACL, but I can't compare that. I just know the film that we saw that he played really good snaps, some really good suddenness in and out of holes and accelerating into open areas. So again, I think we really feel good about (him). The hunger that (Williams) has coming back off the injury. Some of the best players I've ever been around are guys that have chips on their shoulders, and Javonte's one of those guys."
Williams wasn't especially impressive last year with the Broncos—513 rushing yards and 3.7 yards per carry. But Williams eclipsed 1,200 total yards as a rookie in 2021, and the Cowboys actually gave Williams more money than Dowdle got to join the Panthers, and the latter was quietly a fantasy RB2 in Big D a year ago.
