Fantasy Football Impact for Cam Skattebo on the New York Giants
Cam Skattebo is a bruising bowling ball of a back. At 5-feet-10 and 219 pounds, Skattebo nearly led the Sun Devils to an upset of Texas in the College Football Playoff, rumbling for 143 yards on 30 carries and leading the team in receiving with 99 yards on eight receptions. He scored two touchdowns as a runner and threw a 42-yard touchdown pass. Over the season, Skattebo amassed 2,316 yards from scrimmage and scored 24 touchdowns. He gained 1,711 yards on 293 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt, and added 605 yards on 45 receptions. Skattebo was the first major college player with 1,500 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season since Christian McCaffrey's 2015 season at Stanford. Skattebo finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting and was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press.
The primary knock against Skattebo is his speed. He did not run the 40-yard dash at the Combine due to a hamstring issue, but he recorded the second-highest vertical jump among running backs at 39.5 inches. Per Dane Brugler, Skattebo's 40-yard dash time at a private workout for NFL scouts was 4.65 seconds, slower than anyone who tested at the Combine. Fortunately for Skattebo, he will not be tasked with running fast in a straight line in spandex and no pads as an NFL running back.
Instead, he will be asked to run over defenders, bounce off hits, break tackles, and snatch balls out of the air in tight windows, all of which Skattebo excels at. Skattebo was second in the draft class with 50 broken tackles and 120 missed tackles in 2024, according to PFF data, and he averaged 4.1 yards per carry after contact. He is well suited for short-yardage and goal-to-go situations. Ball security and blocking need improvement, but neither shortcoming should keep him off the field.
The New York Giants' porous offensive line, which our Matt Bitonti ranked second-to-last in the league, will test his ability to shed tacklers and make positive plays when hit in the backfield. The Giants did not use any of their first four draft picks on offensive linemen, and their offseason additions to the line have been lackluster at best.
The Fantasy Football Fallout
Cam Skattebo joins Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Eric Gray in the Giants' running back room. Singletary began last season as the lead back, but Tracy overtook him after a groin injury caused Singletary to miss Weeks 5 and 6. Over the season's final seven weeks, Tracy dominated the running back touches, handling 70 percent of rush attempts and 65 percent of the receptions. He projects to remain the team's RB1 for now, but a committee approach cannot be ruled out.
Skattebo may challenge Singletary for the RB2 role. Skattebo is slightly taller, heavier, and younger than Singletary, and they have similar playing styles. Gray is likely relegated to spot duty.

Overview
The New York Giants drafted Cam Skattebo with their fourth-round pick. A bruising back who excels at shedding tackles and gaining yards after contact, Skattebo offers three-down appeal with the potential to be proverbial thunder to Tyrone Tracy Jr.'s lightning. Skattebo will immediately compete with Devin Singletary for the team's RB2 role, and the door is open to a dreaded running-back-by-committee approach.
