Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Following a series of disappointing practices last week, Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask made significant strides in their preparations for Week 1. Mayfield had a solid week, connecting with multiple receivers. Both quarterbacks markedly improved during Wednesday’s joint practice with the Dolphins, delivering solid performances. On Friday night, Mayfield appeared in his first preseason game of the season. He and the starting offense looked sharp, quickly making their mark on the game. Mayfield efficiently led the team down the field, culminating in a touchdown on their opening drive, after which he was rested for the remainder of the game. Kyle Trask took over for the rest of the game, delivering his most impressive preseason performance. His strong showing comes at a crucial time, as John Wolford remains sidelined with a rib injury and did not participate in practice this week. With Wolford out of action, Trask has solidified his claim to the No. 2 quarterback role for the foreseeable future.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
The depth chart is now firmly established. Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker have consistently impressed throughout training camp, with Irving showcasing explosive playmaking abilities both as a ball carrier and a pass catcher. His versatility might open new tactical options for the offense. Meanwhile, Sean Tucker has also made a legitimate case for a roster spot. Rachaad White remains the primary back, but the emergence of Irving and Tucker could potentially reduce his touches compared to last year. White scored on the opening drive in the preseason finale before heading to the bench with the other starters. The rest of the night saw Irving and Tucker effectively splitting the carries. Chase Edmonds—the presumptive No. 2 entering camp—was absent from practice again this week.
Preseason Updates: Wide Receivers
Jalen McMillan continues solidifying his position as a top-4 option and is making a strong push to displace Trey Palmer as the No. 3 behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The rookie only caught one pass in the preseason finale, but it was a highlight-reel moment. Rookie Kameron Johnson made his preseason debut on Friday, with the Buccaneers' coaching staff eager to leverage his speed and athleticism through designed plays. Johnson has been outstanding in recent practices, and he used Friday's game as an opportunity to prove to the coaching staff that he deserves a spot on the 53-man roster. Meanwhile, Rakim Jarrett and Sterling Shepard remained sidelined this week due to injuries. Their absence complicates how the coaches finalize the roster.
Preseason Updates: Tight Ends
Health permitting, Cade Otton, Payne Durham, and Ko Kieft will be on the 53-man roster. Durham and Devin Culp began the week on the sidelines. As the week progressed, both were gradually reintegrated into practice and looked on track for Week 1 availability. The uncertainty around the final roster composition, specifically whether to carry three or four tight ends, leaves Devin Culp’s role somewhat ambiguous.
Preseason Updates: Defense
Defensive end Calijah Kancey made a welcome return to practice this week after recuperating from a knee injury. Tykee Smith wrapped up an impressive preseason in the defensive backfield by clinching the starting nickel role. Additionally, Smith has been taking some reps at safety. The unit delivered a commendable performance against the Dolphins. They limited the Dolphins to 14 points, resiliently thwarting multiple fourth-down conversion attempts. The highlight came in the fourth quarter when linebacker Antonio Grier Jr. made a pivotal interception, decisively ending the Dolphins' final drive of the night.
Preseason Updates: Returners
Rookie Bucky Irving will likely receive early playing time on kickoff returns. Trey Palmer might have lost the No. 3 receiver job this August, but his role in returning punts is secure.

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
This week, the Buccaneers headed to Jacksonville for joint practices with the Jaguars before their Saturday night game. During Wednesday's joint practice, Baker Mayfield initially struggled against the Jaguars' pass defense but eventually synced up with his receivers, successfully executing multiple touchdowns in red zone drills. However, Thursday's joint practice proved more challenging for Mayfield and Kyle Trask as both quarterbacks faced difficulties, including throwing interceptions and struggling to connect with their receivers. Head Coach Todd Bowles emphasized that the competition for the No. 2 quarterback spot between Trask and John Wolford remains open. Trask started Saturday’s game against the Jaguars, and although the offense took some time to find its rhythm, it eventually did, with Trask connecting with Cody Thompson for a touchdown in the second quarter. In the second half, John Wolford sustained what appeared to be a rib injury following a late hit that resulted in a roughing-the-passer penalty. Fortunately, Wolford was able to walk off the field under his own power. Trask then re-entered the game to finish the matchup.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker are steadily establishing themselves as formidable forces in the Buccaneers' running game. In their recent matchup against the Jaguars, both backs shared the workload and made significant impacts with limited opportunities. Notably, Tucker’s first carry of the game was a standout 21-yard run that initially appeared to be halted, showcasing his ability to create big plays. This dynamic in the running back room marks a significant shift from 2023, when Rachaad White predominantly carried the load for the team. While White remains the primary back, the emerging talents of Irving and Tucker could potentially influence his share of snaps if they maintain their current form. Their impressive performances suggest a more diversified and possibly more potent offensive strategy. Meanwhile, Chase Edmonds remains sidelined due to injury and did not participate in practice this week.
Preseason Updates: Wide Receivers
During this week's practices, the receivers experienced a notable case of "the drops." Both Trey Palmer and Jalen McMillan struggled to secure and complete catches. However, McMillan turned his week around, impressively recording zero drops during Thursday's practice. On the other hand, Palmer continued to face challenges throughout the week. Rookie Kameron Johnson made a positive return to practice this week and was praised by Baker Mayfield. Mayfield enthusiastically noted, "Kam Johnson is a stud. I didn’t even know where Barton College was until like a few weeks ago. Whatever they fed him, it worked." During Monday's practice, Rakim Jarrett encountered a setback with an undisclosed injury, which sidelined him for the remainder of the week. Currently positioned as the No. 5 wide receiver, Jarrett has the potential to ascend the depth chart, provided he can capitalize on future opportunities once he returns to total health. In Saturday's game, Cody Thompson emerged as a standout performer, making five receptions and scoring the only touchdown. Performances like this significantly bolster his case.
Preseason Updates: Tight Ends
Payne Durham sustained a knee injury during Wednesday's practice and is listed as day-to-day. His absence opens a competitive opportunity for Ko Kieft and Devin Culp as they vie for the roster's No. 3 tight end position. With the Buccaneers likely to carry only three tight ends and Cade Otton firmly established as the No. 1, the upcoming practices and games become critical for Kieft and Culp to demonstrate their value.
Preseason Updates: Defense
Wednesday’s joint practice with the Jaguars was challenging for the defense, which seemed sluggish. Trevor Lawrence was difficult to contain for most of the session. It was not until Antoine Winfield secured a late-practice sack that the defensive unit found some momentum, briefly energizing the team. However, the issues with the passing defense persisted into Thursday's practice. On a positive note, despite the struggles in the air, the run defense remained robust. Safety Kaevon Merriweather, entering his sophomore season, has shown significant improvement. Unfortunately, during the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason game, Merriweather sustained a knee injury and could not return to the field, casting a shadow over his promising start. Defensive back Tykee Smith is solidifying his role as the starting nickelback. However, cornerback Bryce Hall and safety Marcus Banks had a tough outing on Saturday night. Both players experienced lapsed coverage that led to scoring opportunities for the opposition. With the secondary appearing sluggish throughout the week, focusing on improvements in this area will be a critical agenda for the upcoming practices.
Preseason Updates: Offensive Lines
Left tackle Tristan Wirfs has made three consecutive Pro Bowls, and this summer, the team rewarded him with a five-year extension. The front office also invested in the draft, bringing in rookie Graham Barton (Round 1 - Duke). In limited results, the rookie's been great. Right guard Cody Mauch is being pushed by rookie Elijah Klein (Round 6 – UTEP). The free agency period was productive, where they found left guard Ben Bredeson (Giants) to start at a modest rate. The coaches have said they are trying to find a running game. This group ranks 23rd overall but is on the rise.

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
After an impressive week of practice, Baker Mayfield faced a challenging start this week, particularly during Tuesday's session, where he threw two interceptions, bringing his training camp total to six. Despite this setback, Mayfield rebounded in Wednesday’s practice, showcasing precision in the red zone with touchdown passes to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. He continued to impress by connecting with Cade Otton and Trey Palmer for additional touchdowns, demonstrating his ability to overcome earlier struggles and excel under pressure.
Kyle Trask also had a strong week, finding a new preferred target in Cody Thompson. The pair connected multiple times during Wednesday's practice, producing standout plays. With wide receiver Sterling Shepard sidelined, Thompson has emerged as Trask's go-to receiver, potentially setting the stage for more dynamic plays as the preseason progresses.
During Saturday’s game against the Bengals, Trask and John Wolford shared quarterback duties. Both struggled to gain significant yardage, though Trask made some impressive throws to Trey Palmer and Rakim Jarrett before throwing an interception. Wolford took over in the second half and led a scoring drive, providing a much-needed boost and perhaps a turning point in his preseason performance.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Chase Edmonds continued to miss practice this week, following a pattern of absences. As a result, rookie Bucky Irving is now in a position to secure the No. 2 running back spot for Week 1. Irving has consistently brought energy and dynamism to the offense, and with the new kickoff rules in place, he has also been practicing kick returns, further boosting his value.
In the preseason game against the Bengals on Saturday night, Irving made an immediate impact, scoring a 5-yard rushing touchdown early in the game before being rested after just two offensive drives. In Edmonds' absence, Sean Tucker's role has also expanded. His play stood out from his teammates in the preseason tilt, showcasing a dynamic style. If he continues to perform at this level, Tucker is likely to not only make the 53-man roster but also play a significant role in the offense.
Preseason Updates: Wide Receivers
Jalen McMillan has consistently excelled in training camp, quickly establishing himself as a favorite target and solidifying his case for the No. 3 receiver spot. Veteran Lavonte David praised McMillan's relentless energy and receptiveness to coaching, noting, "He [has] a motor, man. He goes. He understands, he takes coaching," highlighting McMillan's rapid adaptation and effort from the outset.
Trey Palmer also made headlines this week with his display of speed during Wednesday’s practice, catching a 45-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield. Palmer's combination of speed and reliable hands makes him a potent downfield threat, capable of altering the game's dynamics with his deep-field capabilities. Against the Bengals, the receivers put on a balanced performance. Ryan Miller topped the charts with three receptions for 42 yards, while Rakim Jarrett, Tanner Knue, and Ramon Jefferson each had two grabs.
Preseason Updates: Tight Ends
The tight ends have been a standout group this summer. Cade Otton remains a dependable target, particularly in red zone situations, showcasing his ability to be a key player in critical scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, a competitive battle is brewing for the No. 3 spot between Devin Kulp and Ko Kieft. Kieft, widely recognized for his blocking, sets a high standard. To surpass him, Kulp will need to excel not only in blocking but also as a receiver. This competition underscores the team’s commitment to building versatile depth at every position. Otton played an overwhelming 98% of the offensive snaps last season, a testament to his durability and importance. However, Payne Durham has expressed a strong desire to help reduce Otton's workload this season.
Preseason Updates: Defense
Tykee Smith, who sprained his ankle during last Saturday's practice, made a swift recovery and is already back at practice. The team holds Smith in high regard and has been particularly impressed with his performance. Smith was notably active, demonstrating no residual effects from his ankle injury. He started against the Bengals, where he showcased his physicality and speed.
In the same game, defensive backs Keenan Isaac and Kaevon Merriweather transformed the field into a no-fly zone. They sustained tight coverage and successfully disrupted several deep pass attempts. Isaac made a crucial interception in the first half. With edge rusher Yaya Diaby sidelined for the remainder of training camp, Chris Braswell, Markee Watts, and Jose Ramirez had an opportunity to step up but didn’t on Saturday. The Bengals' quarterbacks faced little pressure. Calijah Kancey participated in warmups on Thursday but did not participate in subsequent activities. His absence extended to Saturday's preseason game.
Preseason Updates: Returners
Rookie Bucky Irving was the best kickoff returner through training camp, and the first depth chart reflected that, listing him as the top option. Trey Palmer, at risk of losing the No. 3 receiving job to rookie Jalen McMillan, is likely to cement his role as the top punt returner.
Updates from Week 1

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
The Buccaneers committed to Baker Mayfield with a new three-year, $100 million contract. Coming off a career-high year, Mayfield is expected to maintain high performance levels with the team's support. He expressed confidence in his stability, saying, “When I settle in, good things happen. I know how I am; I know how I operate. When I can truly dig my feet in to make a difference in the culture and the people around me and make people better – that’s when I’m at my best.” Backup quarterbacks Kyle Trask and John Wolford have struggled with interceptions and sacks since training camp began. Although it's still early in camp, there's hope that both quarterbacks will find their rhythm as practices continue.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Rachaad White has had a quiet training camp but is projected to post impressive numbers, currently ranked as RB #10 in standard draft rankings. Chase Edmonds has missed every practice since sustaining an undisclosed injury on the season's first day. With a history of injuries, his prolonged absence could lead to a demotion to the practice squad or his release from the team. Rookie Bucky Irving is meeting high expectations, capitalizing on additional reps with Edmonds sidelined. Irving is committed to proving his prowess in pass protection despite concerns about his size. "I take a lot of pride in my pass protection. People say little guys can't do it, but it's about the willingness, and I am willing," Irving stated. Sean Tucker, also benefitting from extra reps, has begun to showcase his potential, notably with a 20-yard touchdown run. Tucker is actively competing with Irving for the backup role.
Preseason Updates: Wide Receivers
This week saw a reduced presence of Mike Evans on the field as the veteran receiver took some additional rest days. This opened the door for other receivers to showcase their skills. Rakim Jarrett had a standout week, demonstrating that he could be a reliable option with consistent performances. Chris Godwin, approaching a pivotal contract year, knows that delivering impressive statistics is crucial for securing his desired extension. This week, Godwin focused on enhancing his red zone effectiveness, especially after scoring only two touchdowns last season. His concentrated efforts in practice aim to boost his scoring capabilities to meet his contract goals.
Trey Palmer displayed remarkable speed by catching a significant pass from Mayfield in full stride. Palmer is anticipated to take on the No. 3 role this season, showcasing his potential as a game-changing asset in the Buccaneers' offensive strategy. However, the WR3 spot isn't a lock for Palmer. Rookie Jalen McMillan has quickly adjusted to the team and has already made some highlights. Todd Bowles praised McMillan’s performance, noting his impressive catches and consistent play. Rookie Kameron Johnson was sidelined during the week due to a minor rib injury. Despite this setback, Johnson has been a prominent figure during training camp, displaying skills that make him a player to watch as the preseason progresses. His recovery and return to full participation are eagerly anticipated, given his potential impact on the team's receiving corps.
Preseason Updates: Tight Ends
This week, the tight end group has been a standout component of the offense, showing significant promise and synergy. Cade Otton has emerged as one of Baker Mayfield's preferred options in the passing game, demonstrating a strong connection that suggests frequent targets throughout the season. Additionally, Payne Durham and Ko Kieft have made notable contributions during practice. Both tight ends, traditionally recognized for their robust blocking abilities and pass protection, have proven they can be valuable in the passing game as well. They have shown dependability, particularly in short-pass scenarios and crucial red zone situations, adding depth and versatility to the tight end position for the team. Rookie Devin Kulp had a solid week of practice, catching the attention of head coach Todd Bowles, who commented, “He’s [Kulp] got to work on his hands a little more. He can catch the basket ones in his chest. He’s got to have more natural hands. He’s been working on that. He’s been coming down with some lately.” Kulp is battling Ko Kieft for the No. 3 role.
Preseason Updates: Defense
The injury bug has hit Tampa Bay's defense during training camp. Thursday’s session ended with concern as linebacker Yaya Diaby was carted off the field due to a high ankle sprain. Diaby is expected to miss four to six weeks but remains optimistic about returning in time for Week 1. His absence opens opportunities for Markees Watts, Anthony Nelson, and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to practice with the first team. Safety Jordan Whitehead is recovering from a quad injury sustained during Tuesday night's practice and is listed as day-to-day. The Buccaneers are hopeful Whitehead will return to practice soon.
Rookie defensive back Tykee Smith suffered a minor ankle sprain during Saturday’s individual drills. Head Coach Todd Bowles described the injury as a minor tweak and expressed hope that Smith can return to practice next week. Despite these challenges, defensive back Jamel Dean has excelled, intercepting multiple passes this week. Dean attributed his success to a focus on improving his catching ability, saying, “I’ve been trying to make it a big emphasis to catch 50 balls a day. So, when the opportunity comes, it’ll come naturally for me...That’s a big emphasis. Last year, I know I dropped like five interceptions. That separates you from Pro Bowl, All-Pro.” Dean's proactive approach and determination have paid off, highlighting his potential for a significant impact on the field.
