Will Levis, Tennessee
Will Levis was a betting favorite to be the second and the fourth pick during the week before the NFL Draft, so it was a major surprise he fell out of the first round of the draft. Ultimately, the Titans traded up to select Levis with the second pick of the second round. The problem with the selection is the cost does not guarantee Levis a true opportunity to be a franchise starter. The team has signaled a period of rebuilding, including moves along their offense and defense lines while possessing one of the worst supporting casts in the league. Incumbent starter Ryan Tannehill has one year left on his contract, but the team has an over/under of 7.5 wins and is a candidate to be in the high end of the 2024 Draft, where they could again be in the quarterback market. In the event the team starts poorly, Levis should get an opportunity to start as a showcase in 2023, but his fall in the draft does not secure a starting opportunity past that showcase.
Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee
Ryan Tannehill is entering the final season of his contract, and Tennessee drafted Levis in the second round of the NFL Draft. The Titans hired new general manager Ran Carthon who has released tackle Taylor Lewan, center Ben Jones, and wide receiver Robert Woods while allowing guards Dennis Daley and Nate Davis to leave in free agency. All these moves indicate a reset of their franchise. If the team is looking to rebuild, they have stripped the talent around Tannehill and then drafted Will Levis. The team could pick very high in the 2024 draft and may want to evaluate Levis before they enter a good quarterback draft class in 2024. This all makes Tannehill a lame duck with a poor supporting cast and in a tough situation. Tannehill could possibly be in line to be a bridge starter in 2024, but he is not in a promising situation this season.
