Welcome to the dynasty trading post, where optimizing strategy, roster construction, format, and player value oscillations are examined weekly in example and completed dynasty trades.
This week, we will analyze a subset of the most traded players this week: David Montgomery and Nico Collins.
*All trades are Superflex unless stated otherwise*
RB David Montgomery, Detroit Lions
Theme of the Week: Stepping Stone
Montgomery is RB6 on the season in PPG, fueled by a monster game in Week 4 (141 total yards, three touchdowns). While Montgomery has taken over the Jamaal Williams role from 2022 for Detroit, his three targets over four games is a scary dependence on touchdowns for quality games. He has found the end zone in all three active games. The concerns include Jahmyr Gibbs sharing the backfield with his receiving-centric role, plus Round 1 pedigree, where Gibbs will eventually impinge on Montgomery's workload and ultimate RB1 status. The other is, despite being used around the goal line, Montgomery is 1.5 touchdowns over expectation in the young season and 16% over expectation for rushing overall.
Here are a few key Montgomery trades this week with him as a sell valuation and recommendation:
- Montgomery, Zack Moss, Courtland Sutton, 24 2nd for Breece Hall
- Montgomery, Nico Collins for Jonathan Taylor
- Montgomery for Christian Watson, 24 2nd
The theme is using Montgomery as a stepping stone to brighter profiles for the long term. The first trade appears like a lot to give up, but none are strong profiles and Breece Hall is strongly insulated and already taking over for the stopgap Dalvin Cook as the RB1 for the Jets.
