Washington at Chicago
After weeks of drumbeats during training camp, it appeared Brian Robinson Jr was going to be the lead running back in Washington to start the season. He then was shot twice during a carjacking and missed the first four weeks of the season. During his return in Week 5, Robinson took over the running back workload, as he had nine carries to only three for Antonio Gibson. Washington’s offensive line has been in flux and struggled, particularly on the interior, losing centers Chase Roullier and Wes Schweitzer to injured reserve. The team has stabilized the position with Nick Martin and should have the opportunity to get right against a bad Chicago defense.
The Bears plan to rebuild a defense this season after the departures of Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack has not worked according to plan so far this season, as defensive tackles Justin Jones and Armon Watts have struggled at the defensive line position. Chicago has given up the second-most rushing yards per game in the league (170.2) thia season. The Bears gave up the ninth-most rushing yards in the league in 2021 (125.1 per game) and have worsened under new Head Coach Matt Eberflus. Chicago has faced a variety of run styles and has not had success against any of them, giving up more than 50 yards to each Trey Lance and Deebo Samuel in week one, 193 yards on 33 carries to the Packers in week two, 146 yards to Saquon Barkley in Week 4 and 94 yards and two rushing touchdowns to Dalvin Cook in Week 5. Chicago has given up the fourth-most missed tackles (33) on the season. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson has been one of their best early-season run defenders but has missed the past two games, while linebacker Roquan Smith has been one of the worst run-stoppers in football.
